Product Description

The multivocalic rite known as Hosay in the Caribbean developed out of earlier practices originating in Iraq and Iran which diffused to Trinidad by way of South Asian indentured laborers brought to the Caribbean by the British from the mid-1800s to the early decades of the twentieth century. The rituals are important as a Shi'i religious observance, but they also are emblems of ethnic and national identity for Indo-Trinidadians. Frank Korom investigates the essential role of Hosay in the performance of multiple identities by historically and ethnographically situating the event in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Caribbean contexts. Hosay Trinidad: Muharram Performances in an Indo-Caribbean Diaspora is the first detailed historical and ethnographic study of Islamic muharram rituals performed on the island of Trinidad.

Korom's central argument is that the annual rite is a polyphonic discourse that is best understood by employing multiple levels of interpretation. On the symbolic level the observance provides esoteric meaning to a small community of Indo-Trinidadian Muslims. On another level, it is perceived to be representative of "transplanted" Indian culture as a whole. Finally, the rituals are becoming emblematic of Trinidad's polyethnic population. Addressing strategies used to resist integration and assimilation, Hosay Trinidad is engaged with theories concerning the notion of cultural creolization in the Caribbean as well as in the general study of global diasporas.

Product Description
In a detailed description of how people use models of time in their daily lives, Kevin Birth explores cultural ideas of time in rural Trinidad and the feelings of cooperation and conflict that result from using different models of time.

Birth’s study contributes to the understanding of ethnic, class, and gender relationships in the Caribbean, and it is notable for its emphasis on how individuals manipulate and manage social differences on a day-to-day basis. Using ideas of time as a lens through which to watch these divisions evolve, he explores the implications of the existence of multiple models of time on social organization.

While Birth’s ethnographic cases are derived from Trinidad, they shed light on the more general issue of how people employ time to construct, manage, and even manipulate social relationships. ... Read more

Product Description
Part of the "My World" series, an information book series which features colour photographs and a clear and simple text on each page, this book looks at carnival in Trinidad. The series is graded for language level and readability in line with the Red, Green and Blue levels of the "New Way" series and may be viewed as the non-fiction strand of that scheme. However, it can easily be used quite independently of "New Way". There are two books on each subject area so that concepts and vocabulary can be easily reinforced, but all the books (at any level) can be read in any order. ... Read more

Product Description
This book brings science to the heart of debates about globalization by exploring the globalization of science and its contrasting effects in Guinea (one of the world's poorest countries) and Trinidad (a more prosperous, industrialized and urbanized island). It focuses on environment, forestry and conservation, sciences that are central to these countries and involve resources that many depend upon for their livelihoods. Taking a unique ethnographic approach drawn from anthropology, development and science studies, the work will appeal to students and researchers across the social sciences, as well as policy-makers and practitioners. ...
