Excerpt: Piarco International Airport -Considered one of the most modern airports in the Caribbean, Piarco Airport opened on January 8, 1931, to serve Venezuela's Compagnie Generale Aeropostale. Prior to this, the Queen's Park Savannah, the Mucarapo Field, and the Cocorite Docks (for flying boats) were used as airstrips to serve the island. During World War II the airport was used by both the United States Army Air Force Sixth Air Force and United States Navy air squadrons. The airport was used both as a transport airfield and also for antisubmarine patrol flights over the south Caribbean. It was returned to civil control after the war. During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces Sixth Air Force stationed the following units at the airport performing antisubmarine patrols: A major expansion of the airport, which included the construction of a new terminal building, and high-speed taxiways, was completed in 2001. The old airport building is currently used for cargo handling. Piarco International Airport is also the primary hub and operating base of Caribbean Airlines and was also the primary hub and operating base of the now defunct BWIA West Indies Airways and Air Caribbean. Briko Air Services operates a flight school at the airport. An American Airlines Boeing 757 undergoing pre-flight service at Piarco International AirportAt Piarco International Airport there are two high-speed taxiways and three connector taxiways (ICAO Code F for new large aircraft). This technologically state of the art airport has 82 ticket counter positions that operate under SITAs fiber-optic C.U.T.E. system which exceeds the recommended standards of ICAO and IATA. 4-0 out of 5 stars Discover Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidad & Tobago is part of an interesting series we discovered earlier this year (2008) at our local library. We are slowly working out way thorough the Discovering the Caribbean series and are finding it most enjoyable!True to it's back cover description, the books in this series explore the islands of the Caribbean (usually one book to each island) presenting an overview that provides young readers with the geography, economy, a simple history, the cultural background as well as a glimpse of the cities and communities, even sports and recreation of the island and its people. One of the best features of this series (in my opinion) is that it includes all of this information in an easy to understand (for young readers) format along with a section at the back which lists yearly holidays & festivals of the islands, recipes, and a listing of projects (which allow individual children or groups to explore various aspects of the island in more detail) that make this series suited to both a classroom library and for home school families. This series is idea for children ages 8-12 and would provide a solid foundation for any study unit focusing on the Caribbean Islands! This is a series I recommend without hesitation, 5 stars and two thumbs up! A great start to the exploration of this fascinating corner of our little blue planet! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Trinidad and Tobago," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Trinidad and Tobago in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Trinidad and Tobago when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Trinidad and Tobago, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
