2-0 out of 5 stars good for general fitness but not so good for baseball/softball
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R28KOI259W3CVL To all softball players, coaches and parents:

In this video review, I explained that I'm very qualified to review this product and why I strongly believe that this book is not specific enough for softball players and is better suited for the general population.

Reviewer's credentials:

- Experienced Softball Coach (over 20 years of softball coaching experience including the international and college levels)

- Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (over 10 years of experience training and conditioning softball players)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This book has been absolutely wonderful for me, as well as the rest of my team.I'm hitting the ball further then I ever have before. The difference was evident in weeks.Truly the single best program out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful workout program

Coaching Youth Softball is written especially for the unprepared parent thrust into the role of coaching his or her 8- to 12-year-old child's softball team. Upbeat and inspirational, it schools new coaches in the fundamentals of controlling, motivating, and encouraging a disparate group of kids in the art and science of softball.

Parents learn the logistics of running a youth team and the specifics of coaching softball. They learn how to match drills to a player's skills and motivation level and gain a wealth of detailed instructions on such specifics as how to run a successful practice and manage during a game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
This book is very helpful to new coaches and seasoned coaches as well. I would recommend it, even if all that you need as a coach is some ideas for new drills.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better Softball books out there for the beginning coach
"The Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth Softball" is written with the coach stepping on the field for the first time in mind.It covers such topics as establishing one's identity as coach, an overview of Softball's basics, planning the season, how to teach Softball's essential skills, how to conduct a practice, and dealing with parents and gender issues. It also includes a Drill Section that offers various drills for warm-ups, defensive fundamentals, and batting stations.

As much as I like Jacquie Joseph as an author, I was disappointed in this book overall. There is little here that is not covered by other books, and in fact most of the topics discussed are covered better in various other books. For example, there are only three paragraphs dedicated to the difference between coaching boys and girls and they only include generalities. Also, the chapter on dealing with parents is only two written pages long!

The final three chapters of the book are dedicated to basic warm up, defensive, and batting drills.Though the book is written with the beginner coach teaching beginning players as its audience, there are a sprinkling of intermediate and advanced drills that seem out of place in this book. Also, there is no Drill Finder Matrix to help a coach quickly find an appropriate drill, which is surprising to me because Jacquie Joseph has written a very good drill book that includes one of the best Drill Finders I have seen. Perhaps she did not include a Drill Finder because there are only a total of 28 warm up, 12 defensive, and 10 batting drills listed.

There are some positives to draw from "The Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth Softball".The "Softball in a Nutshell" chapter is a very good primer for the coach or parent who is completely unfamiliar with the sport. Also, each chapter has a Question and Answer section that includes some good information. It has a call-out box that ranks positions in the order of the skill required to play it, something I have not seen presented elsewhere.

Unfortunately, though, the information presented here is so basic and/or general overall that any coach will quickly outgrow the guidance after a couple of practices under his belt.I therefore would not recommend this book, even for a coach completely new to the game. There are better references out there for your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for coaches
I bought this book when I agreed to coach my daughter's 10u softball team--and then panicked!I played softball for years but it is a lot different now. This book was my coaching Bible. It helped me with fundamentals and beginning to intermediate drills. I highly recommended it to any coaches or parents want to learn the basics of softball.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner...
For a beginner, this book would be fantastic. If you've Managed for a season, though, all this book will do is confirm that you're doing the right thing (or not).Well written, and easy to understand, but elementary subjects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is another great in the series of A Baffled Parent's Guide. These books are thorough and complete - a coach's bible, especially a new coach. The book covers everything from basics of the game to working with the children and dealing with the parents.I highly recommend books from this series. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first pitching book
Excellent book to gain a basic understanding of the windmill pitch.Good discussion of basic pitching drills as well however not all inclusive.Good illustrations to suppport text.My 8yr old daughter takes private lessons and this book couples very well with her lessons. We take the book to the park sometimes to use the illustrations to enforce teachings and feedback. For the money, it is invaluable. The Maven 1,2,3 Basics video is also outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
I purchased this book years ago for my daughter who is now a high school pitcher and hopes to play college and pro.We both learned alot about the athleticism and mechanics of pitching. It also includes great information about nutrition and warm-ups.Thanks Lisa for a great book chockful of valuable information!

3-0 out of 5 stars Just another softball pitching book...OK, but not great.
I've read many a book on softball pitching, and most of them tend to be promotions for the "cover girl."At least this one gave a little more.My disappointments deal with not being able to transfer much of this into mens' fastpitch. There are subtle and not so subtle differences in the games, and there are other pitches in the repertoire with men, as well as differences in the movements that this didn't capture.I expected more from a former mens' pitcher and coach, than coverage only of the womens' game.Maybe it was the promo on it that misled me.Either way, I didn't get what I was looking for.But you don't teach men the way you teach women.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best for Reference for Fastpitch Pitching
The Windmill Pitcher is a great book for any coach, player, and parent.I highly recommend this for parents of pitchers. It is well written with execptional illustrations of the correct mechanics for the windmall pitcher. I've been around the game all my life and seen many good pitchers. The great pitchers have solid mechanics. This is a must have for fastpitch softball.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fastpitch Softball: The Windmill Pitcher
Illustrations are not clear enough for a beginner to understand.I pitched fastpitch for over 35 years and I had trouble understanding what was being taught.

Overall, I was not too impressed with the book.I probably won't use it as a reference for my pitching school. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas for Practice
I looked through lots of books at the Bookstore and I was looking more for ideas for practice and helping kids learn new skills. This book provides learning through games, strategies and many more useful tools. I think that keeping the kids busy and learning in practice with little idle time is essential. It also gives you a plan for the year per age group. This book has given me lots of ideas.Thanks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Psychology of Coaching
This book is a great book to discuss the pshycological aspect of coaching. The book discussed what it means to be a coach and how to deal with parents. It did have a few drills at the end of the book that were somewhat helpful but overall this book didn't have a lot of useful informationfor myself. If you want a great book for coaching, buy"The baffled Parents Guide To Coaching Youth Softball".

Product Description

Good softball pitchers aren’t born, they are developed. A young player can become a good pitcher, and have a lot of fun along the way. Good pitchers have a couple of things in common. First, they really want to pitch. Second, they are willing to spend the considerable time and effort tocondition, train, and develop their skills.

There are several attributes that most really good pitchers possess. They can control their pitches, throw strikes, and throw them with speed. They also have good self-control. The best pitchers know how to win; they have their head in the game and use their
abilities to contribute to a successful team effort.

This book will get young pitchers started on the right track to success. With chapters on conditioning, pitching mechanics, the variety of pitches, proper practice, control, game preparation, dealing with batters, fielding, and more, A Guide For Young Softball Pitchers is a complete source for the young pitcher and for all those who coach youth softball, as well as for the parents of young pitchers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Teaching Tool For Young Players
As a volunteer softball coach, I was impressed by this book and I found it to be a helpful and concise guide to the rules of softball for young players.Unlike other such books which are written for a high school or college level, this book is written for elementary school children (e.g., Kto 2nd grade) who are beginning to learn the game. The softball rules areexplained clearly and simply. This is helpful because softball rules canseem pretty hypertechnical to young children.Topics include equipment, positions, pitching, batting and strike zone, fair/foul territory, running, umpire signals, types of outs, vocabulary, etc.The illustrations alsohelp explain proper stances and positions.Don't expect a tome, however --the book is only 32 pages long. And this book won't provide much help forthose who've played softball for more than several years.I think thatthis book is perfect for its purpose. ... This book was written expressly for you who are coaching children in softball. We stress how to teach children this fun game and to have fun doing it. The book covers all facets of the game from “how to” throw a ball to strategies and tactics. When coaching children it should be a fun experience for everyone, for you, for the parents, and for the children. As a coach, we cover the teaching attitude and methods. We always keep in mind that the game is for the children and not for the adults. Winning isn't everything, but learning to play well and wanting to win is.

We take the children from kindergarten through the eighth grades and break them into four categories. In each category we discuss the players needs and abilities, what they are capable of in both the physical and emotional sense, and their limitations. We have also defined the coach’s role, the parent’s role and the player’s role.

4-0 out of 5 stars came in handy
During a scoreless game in a Sunday-morning softball league, a rules dispute arose concerning two men occupying the same base (which had occurred recently in a Mets game). The matter was successfully concluded thanks to a handy copy of The Official Rules of Softball (once the relevant rule was located in the book and read to the unpire and opposing team).Clutch.(A better index/TOC would have been helpful, though.) ... Product Description

It happens every summer: packs of beer-bellied men with gloves and aluminum bats, putting their middle-aged bodies to the test on the softball diamond. For some, this yearly ritual is driven by a simple desire to enjoy a good ballgame; for others, it’s a way to forge friendships—and rivalries. But for one short, wild-haired, bespectacled professor, playing softball in New York’s Central Park means a whole lot more. It's one last chance to heal the nagging wounds of Little League trauma before the rust of decline and the relentless responsibilities of fatherhood set in.

Professor Baseball is the coming-of-middle-age story of New York University professor and Little League benchwarmer Edwin Amenta. As rookie manager of the Performing Arts Softball League’s doormat Sharkeys, he reverses softball’s usual brawn-over-brains formula. He coaxes his skeptical teammates to follow his sabermetric and sociological approach, based equally on Bill James and Max Weber, which in the heady days of early success he dubs “Eddy Ball.” But Amenta soon learns that his teammates’ attachments to favorite positions and time-honored (if ineffective) strategies are hard to break—especially when the team begins losing. And though he rejects the baseball-as-life metaphor, life keeps intruding on his softball season. Amenta here comes to grips with the humiliation of assisted reproduction, suffers mysterious ailments, and finds himself lingering at the sponsor’s bar, while his partner, a beautiful but baseball-challenged professor, second-guesses his book in the making. Can he turn his team—and his life—around?

Packed with colorful personalities, dramatic games, and the bustle of New York life, Professor Baseball will charm anyone who has ever root, root, rooted for the underdog.

4-0 out of 5 stars slow-pitch softball players of the world unite!
I loved reading Prof. Amenta's composite long summer of '05 of playing softball in multiple leagues in NYC.The cast of characters ("players") could have been Anywhere U.S.A., where adult slow-pitch softball is played---personality conflicts, tough decisions, other life events intruding, winning vs. popularity, sabermetrics vs. tradition, etc.
I am experiencing the same angst right now, trying to play both senior slow-pitch softball as a rookie & still keep up with the "youngsters" in the church league version.Prof. Amenta is able to keep it all straight somehow, in an obsessive-compulsive way.I mean, how did he ever have time for his "regular job" as a sociology professor while playing in 4-5 leagues per week for months on end?
In the end (finally!), it is the relationships experienced, the mano-a-mano camaraderie that linger in one's memory (which the author confirms). The game itself is simply a framework, a structure for such interaction. Ahh, but what a game!

4-0 out of 5 stars Professor Baseball:An Intriguing Prospect
I couldn't resist reading this book, captured by its wonderful title.Hats off, and three cheers, to the publisher for agreeing to issue this title.

Professor Amenta is a bi-coastal university sociologist, trained at the University of Chicago. And this book is framed -- to his great credit with some subtlety -- in the century-plus scholarship of the so-called "Chicago School."Scratch beneath the surface and you'll surely discover that many a professor -- sociologist or otherwise -- enthralled with baseball aspired to write such a book.

This is an ethnography, written in the tradition of the participant-observer (e.g., Herbert J. Gans, or more recently, Mitchell Dunier), associated with Chicago sociology).

Professor Amenta, a failed Little League player from suburban Chicago, pursued redemption by playing in organized recreational soft-ball leagues in Manhattan.I won't reveal the outcome.Read it for yourself!

We learn a great deal about the author's softball career ("Eddy ball"), academic career, and private life (the latter including a considerable amount of detail about infertility).Perhaps some will deem this overboiled, although mostly I found the whole thing tasteful, insightful, and even inspired.

I especially appreciated the author's concluding observations about the real meaning of life -- professional as well as personal -- as well as his rich experiences on the field of softball dreams.Professor Amenta provides readers with a great deal to contemplate about what happens when culture and society reach an intersection.

Professor Baseball may not be for every armchair baseball reader. But I certainly found it memorable and suspect that many others will subscribe to this sentiment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Older (12U+)Players
I was looking for a book to help me with my daughter who is playing in 8U this year. This is not the book for that. While it is an excellent reference, the book focuses on tools and drills that only the older girls can do. I would recommend it for the older girls but not for 8U or even 10U.

Well written with lots of details and good pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the first time coach.
Alot of basic information. If you've already read one or two coaching softball books this one is not much different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Coaching Resource
Kathy Veroni and Roanna Brazier have written a real winner with their excellent softball reference, "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully -- Second Edition".It is the first book to which I turn when I have a question about managing my team.As a softball board member, if there is an issue on which I feel lost, I can inevitably find good guidance from Veroni/Brazier.In the latter case, Chapter 4, Building a Softball Program, has been particularly valuable time and again.

While written for the travel, high school, or college manager, there is plenty here for lower level recreational league coaches as well. There are whole chapters that can benefit any coach, including developing a coaching philosophy, communicating, motivating, coaching plans, and evaluating the players, team, and the job one has done overall as coach for the season.Additionally, there are exceptional sections on coaching offense, defense and managing a game tactically that are unique to this book.

I love the hitting drills finder in Chapter 8.Instead of focusing on a particular skill to develop, as other drill finders do, "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully" directs its attention on batting problems or flaws to correct. What an absolutely brilliant approach...and of course, extremely valuable to a coach who wants to be more effective!Throw in the standard chapters on defensive and pitching drills and fundamentals, and "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully" becomes a complete reference guide for having a successful season and program.

I know that this book has given my teams at the recreational league level a real edge, both on the playing field and off.Whether one is a new coach at the recreational level, or a seasoned veteran at the travel or high school level, this book is a must-have on your shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
