Product Description
A fascinating historical back story and exciting soccer action combine in this second title in the new series from a popular sports author.
Tyler's hopes for an unbeatable season for the Cougars disappear when his friend Zack, the team's hot-shot midfielder, and two more of their best players accept an offer to play for the Panthers, an elite travel team.
Tyler has to admit he's pleased when Coach Murray puts him in Zack's midfielder position. But playing the middle is tough and Tyler's spirits really sink when the Cougars lose their season opener in a close game-and the next game, too.
Then an elderly English soccer fan tells Tyler about America's 1-0 surprise upset of England-the world's number one team-in the 1950 World Cup. Tyler learns that any game can be won or lost by a single play.
But will one play really be enough to beat the top-ranked Mustangs?
Fred Bowen offers an exciting story of a young athlete who must build up his confidence in order to build up his team's-even if it means losing his best friend. The exciting play-by-play game action as well as the victories and upsets-on and off the field-will keep young readers on the edge of their seats.

This book is about a boy who goes by the name of Mac who plays on the school's soccer team. This boy likes to play soccer and he plays as the goalie.Mac kept finding cartoons in the paper that were making fun of him. At the end of the season the cougars had won the championship game in soccer. The part that I liked the most in this book was when the cougars won the championship game for the school. The part that I didn't like the most was the cartoons in the papers that were making fun of Mac in the book. The effects on this book made me want to read more books on this author.I recommend this book to kids of the age of 10-13 who like sports a lot.

This book is about a boy named Mac who's the best goalie of the season and one day when he was going to school with his friend Doggie, that is his friend all of a sudden when they entered the school everybody started making fun of Mac. 4-0 out of 5 stars A young fan's guide to soccer
This mini coffee table book is a must for any world soccer fan, young or old. Filled with hundreds of photographs, profiles on the seventy-five greatest players, forty legendary teams, and key competitions around the world, including the World Cups, this is the ultimate info book on soccer. Chapters include how to play to game and what to watch in what Pele called the "beautiful game." I must have watched at least thirty games this summer, including many at San Francisco's Civic Center on a big screen with hundreds and even thousands of other fans. This book helps capture that excitement, celebration, and even despair of this great game. I could tell Gifford is a real fan, he really loves soccer, and his love of the game came out in the book.

Geared toward the American soccer fan (everywhere else the game is called "football"), this book would make an ideal holiday gift. Filled with text boxes, lots of photos, and pleasing visual look, this is the encyclopedia for all fans, even the young ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars i'm 34 and i enjoyed the book
So this book is designed to entertain the minds of young kids.I didn't know that until after i read the book. This book lacks a lot of the details about the game of soccer, but it gives a decent overview of the rules and strategies. The pictures are really great and in full color.Throughout the book, websites are mentioned which will lead you to all kinds of detailed info on soccer. The book also describes records for numerous categories, like goals in a game, most red cards in a game, most own goals in a game(139!), etc.
The second half of the book highlights individual players as well as great teams over the history of the sport.
In conclusion, this book is not designed to teach you how to play soccer, it's not going to help you improve your game, it's not going to show you how to kick a ball properly, or how to properly play defense. It's some cozy reading material to give you an overview of the history of soccer.4 stars instead of 5 because i like details!

Very pleased with how fast I recieved the book.It was in wonderful shape

5-0 out of 5 stars A great overview of soccer history.
Unlike other soccer books which can be narrow in scope and range, Murray's book attempts to take us beyond the borders of South America and Europe and examines soccer all over the world. It also examines political and social affiliations attached to the game. The appendix has major soccer disasters covered, tragedies involving players, major soccer grounds,FIFA membership,Soccer at the Olympic Games before 1930,The Growth of the World Cup,and The Growth of Various Youth Tournaments. It also has a useful Glossary which is a must for any observer, casual or hardcore fan of the game. It would be a good introductory book for someone learning about soccer history because it has plenty of useful anecdotes that illustrates the game's colorful and controversial history.

Product Description

As the adult game has increased in popularity, youth soccer has also seen significant expansion in recent years. The popularity of the youth game is set to continue. Young boy and girl players wish to emulate professional soccer stars and the professional game, often with long-term financial rewards in mind, is increasingly keen to develop young talent.

Applied sports science is now a well-established feature of the adult game but the sports science that supports modern football does not translate directly into the youth game. The coaches of young players need specific information about children. Themes explored in this text include:

  • growth of physiological systems
  • development of motor and perceptive skills
  • paediatric environmental physiology
  • prevention of injury
  • diet and nutrition
  • youth fitness and skills training
  • effective teaching and coaching of juniors
  • the role of football academies.

Youth Soccer: From Science to Performance blends current child-focused sports science theory with youth-specific coaching practice to help create soccer development strategies for children. It promotes knowledge and understanding in all these areas and will further professional expertise amongst coaches who wish to develop the all year round potential of youth soccer players and train the stars of the future.

Product Description

Ossie Ardiles is one of the most iconic footballers ever to have graced the game. After winning the World Cup with Argentina in 1978, Ossie became the first foreign player to make an impact in England, paving the way for the modern era of multinational teams. In that unforgettable 1981 FA Cup Final, the silky skills of Ossie and fellow Argentine midfielder Ricky Villa inspired Spurs to their famous victory over Man City. He also helped Spurs to retain the trophy the following year, and to win the UEFA Cup in 1984, and even found time to star in the classic football film Escape to Victory with Bobby Moore, Pelé, Michael Caine, and Sylvester Stallone. Thirty years on from those glory days, Ossie has a unique perspective on the football world, through his long career both playing and in management, with the emphasis always on style and entertainment. He also talks about growing up under a military dictatorship, how he was torn between two countries owing to the outbreak of the Falklands War, which claimed the life of one of his cousins, and how that football world has changed over the decades.

Product Description

Chelsea and England footballer Frank Lampard charts his life story from childhood to young West Ham apprentice to multi-millionaire world footballing celebrity and lynchpin of the national team, including a full account of the 2005/06 season and the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany. One of the best footballers in Britain today, and the 2005 Footballer of the Year, Lampard has been lauded by fans, managers, and fellow players alike. A vital cog in the midfield engine room for Chelsea and England, he is poised to become one of the true legends of the game. The young lad from Romford was born into a football family. His father, a former West Ham star, saw the raw talent in his boy at an early age and was unstinting in his determination for him to succeed. The hard work paid off and Frank Jr kept it in the family by signing to West Ham in 1995, then managed by his uncle Harry Redknapp. Since transferring to Chelsea in a blaze of controversy, he silenced any critics and proved himself indispensable to his club. No one his age has played more Premiership football than Lampard, and no one played more at Chelsea—in fact, he has broken the record for number of consecutive appearances for the Blues. He also holds the record for most goals scored in a season by a Premiership midfielder. Here he, opens up about his early years, how he dealt with the fame and fortune that has come his way since becoming a key member of the England side, his frank opinions on former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson and his manager at Chelsea Jose Mourinho, fascinating insights into Roman Abramovich, and revealing tales of his current teammates. He reveals both the privileges and the pressures of being one of the golden generation of England players. He gives a fascinating inside account of World Cup 2006 in Germany, and describes the disappointment of not fulfilling the dream of bringing the biggest prize in football back to England.
