4-0 out of 5 stars Pop music collection
Great songs, good arrangements ... but why can't we have spiral bindings?!?!?I'm a pianist.I need books that stay open and lie flat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
The book arrived promptly from the seller, and in the condition expected (it was new). I already knew what the contents would be because they had a preview of the book online including the TOC. THis is very important with a sheet music book. I wouldn't buy a sheet music book online if I couldn't see at least the TOC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun arrangements
First of all, I really like the way Dan Coates arranges music for easy piano. The songs are not too simplistic, yet they are still easy to play, and they sound so nice. This has become one of the books I play from most often, and my kids even like to sing along. It does reuse some of the exact same songs I have in other Dan Coates books, but that's not a big deal since you are getting so much music in this book.I do wish the second verses were printed within the staff, since having them at the end it pretty useless.I also wish it was spiral bound, since it is hard to keep open sometimes. You will notice that some of the songs use the same chord patterns, so it can be a little repetitive sometimes, but there is still enough variety to keep you interested.I like that there is such a great variety of pop music in here - newer music as well as old favorites.I would definitely recommend this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Pop Sheet Music Review
I love this book.I would definitely rated it as excellent and also say that is for advanced players. Its great if you like to play solos on the piano while having the words to sing right in front of you.I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in a variety of new and old standard pop songs.Great book!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing, but still enjoyable
In case it wasn't clear from the other reviews, the version of the book sold here is intended for EASY PIANO.It's fulfilling in that regard, but that means the arrangements struggle to create easy rhythms (which barely match the original composition), and are often transcribed for an easier key (or in order to avoid a key change). With a little effort, many of these can be adapted to provide the richer melodies & tonalities that you would expect to find in other arrangements by Dan Coates. The selections are diverse to the point where it's hard to determine what makes any of these the "best" -- it just looks like stuff was picked randomly to appeal to a wider audience. If I'd been able to flip through this in a music store, I probably wouldn't have bought it.The book's binding is decent, but from my experience with similar books I wouldn't give it daily exposure to the sun due to the weak type of glue used.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best in Movie Sheet Music
It has a nice selection of easily played music from a wide range of eras. The arrangements are nicely done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Twenty-four easy to play songs from movies
As advertised this book contains songs that have appeared in movies. Most of the arrangements are quite easy to play or sing. There are twenty-four songs in the collection and some are common standards such as SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW, STAR WARS THEME, THE PINK PANTHER THROUGH THE EYES OF LOVE from ICE CASTLES and SINGING IN THE RAIN.Disney is very well represented with COLORS OF THE WIND, GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS, SO THIS IS LOVE, A WHOLE NEW WORLD and ONCE UPON A DREAM.Broadway musicals made in to films are also part of this book with SEND IN THE CLOWNS and TOMORROW. Rather oddly an easy to playarangement of Led Zeppelin's classic STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN is chosen by virtue of that song being played in the documentary THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME.The rest of the selections are a bit more obscure (at least to me) but the table of contents does helpfully list the movie from which each song is taken.Full lyrics are included with the exception of the one instrumental selection Pachebel's CANON IN D from ORDINARY PEOPLE.There are songs from movies as recent as THE POLAR EXPRESS and THE NOTEBOOK but most pieces are older.A good collection but not a great one.

5-0 out of 5 stars great piano book
We just got a piano a month ago and although I took lessons for many years as a kid, I really had not played in 20 years. With only a little practice, I was able to play several of the songs in this book pretty quickly, and while others will take more work, they are at a good level: not too simplistic, but not hard.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book!
Wow! I play the piano and sing and I am telling you that this book is one of the best compilations - I sing and play at the same time with ease. I recommend this book to all who enjoy music. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No lyrics (why I ordered this book)!!!!
I can't believe this book doesn't include the lyrics, the main reason I ordered it.Instead, it contains easy-to-intermediate piano solos.I know the description says piano solos, but they could have at least included the lyrics as reference.Don't buy this book if you plan on playing the piano and singing along to these great songs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sound of Music Piano Duets Late Intermediate
This music is definitely not for "late intermediate" piano players---it is closer to beginner and should be listed as such.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT as advertised!
The Look Inside shows lyrics and easy piano arrangements --exactly what we wanted. What arrived has NO lyrics and more difficult piano--not what we wanted. We would not have ordered it if the Look Inside had been accurate. We will not be ordering any more sheet music from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sound of Music song and piano book

5-0 out of 5 stars A Slightly Different Version Than Shown
I recently purchased a "collector's" version of this music. The version that I purchased is very nice and was published in 2001 with the binding which allows the book to be opened fully while on the piano. The supplier did everything correctly and I am quite pleased with the product and the service. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars popular songs, florid arrangements
Mr. Coates does professional-sounding arrangements and tries to work with songs that are already popular--a big service to those of us struggling with improvisation. After a while all of these sound a bit alike, with lots of big right-hand chords and the melody in octaves up in the top register. I dropped a lot of this an octave to allow for poorly tuned pianos and older audiences, and because all those high notes tend to sound girly. Fiddle with the arrangements a bit, though, and you'll have music that even younger audiences will appreciate.

2-0 out of 5 stars Commonplace
I should have read the reviews more carefully before I bought this book.I would have been happier with the original sheet music as these arrangements were uninteresting--basically embellishments that any pianist with some experience could add on their own.At least the sheet music would have included the words. If you are looking for arrangements with pizzazz (a little "wow!" factor here and there), don't buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great songs, challenging arrangements...
This arrangement of songs by Dan Coates is definately challenging.I actually have to practice to get through these. Not for the beginning piano player. This book is for moderate to advanced talent levels. Great songs like Desperado, Angel Eyes, The Rose, Open Arms and more. My only complaint is that delivery time was VERY slow.Took nearly a month to receive. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Book For Collectors
This is an excellent reference book but the prices should be viewed with a grain of salt. It does not take into account prices on EBay where most of these pieces can be found for much less. The most I have ever paid for an E.T Paull cover for example is $20 (I have about 40 of the 240 available). Over There by George M. Cohan can actually be had (the unsigned Norman Rockwell Cover) for less than $10. There may be individual auctions where covers fetch a higher price but not very often.

This book is a must-have for collectors. When one combines it with the Smithsonian Collections of first edition covers it will help you find out which version of the sheet music you have. My area of interest in Graduate School was American Music 1864-1910. I think sheet music was the T-Shirt of the late 19th and early 20th century. The covers delivered the message, most of the music is not very good and Tin Pan Alley turned out songs like crazy. Much of the music affected the society and the cover art more than the individual songs will long survive. My generation is the last one whose teachers were actually in vaudeville. When we die there will be no more direct link so it is good people are collecting this music, it keeps it alive.

So in conclusion this reference is an excellent hand-book. Just don't take the prices too literally.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the definitive book to own
By far and away, if you need a price guide to sheet music values, this is a "must have" book.Warning, it doesn't have every single piece ever printed, but it must have 95% of them. With the changing economy over the years, you can't take the prices as realistic, but it will give you an idea of relative value. There is no current substitute for this book; it's the best reference book available -I would suggest to buy it without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I was researching almost 100 pieces of late 1800's to 1930's sheet music from my mother's house, and found almost all of them in the book.In addition to listing the titles alphabetically, with prices, there are cross references to performers, composers, cover artists and genres. An excellent resource for the collector.

3-0 out of 5 stars many music sheets listed; little editorial or hobby advice
I was disappointed, but maybe that is my fault. Many music sheets were listed, with values. But there was virtually no editorial matter about the hobby in general -- nothing on price trends, determinents of value, reproductions, collecting, storing, arranging, buying and selling, etc.Very little 19th century or high-priced stuff.Mostly a book of lists, which would be useful for many collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheet Music Reference and Price Guide
If you have some old sheet music that you wish to sell, then this is the guide for you! I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Zimmer masterpiece
Hans Zimmer really pulled off a masterpiece with this soundtrack. It has his trademark energy (think Gladiator) with "pirate" themes. The fighting scores will tempt you to grab the nearest sword and go swashbuckling. It's also addictive. The only problem I have with this album is that it's too short - only 15 tracks...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I am a great fan of Pirate's and its music.I would say this collection captures the essence of the songs from the movie quite well with a few exceptions.(For example, a few measures in the Black Pearl make you wonder what you're doing). Overall, however, it's great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music, overall
I was kind of disappointed at the simplicity of most of the pieces in this book, but otherwise, I like them. It's fun to just sit down and futz around with the pieces.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves the movie (of course) and is a beginning-intermediate student. They sound exactly as they do in the movie, too, for the difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music
This book is spectacular.Philip Glass is a very wonderful composer and this book is very accessible to play. With just a small amount of practice; mediocre pianists can sound great.Very clean and easy to read.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pieces
These are great pieces, most of them easily played by the beginning-to-intermediate student of piano. There are some tricky counterpoints in one or two spots that are troublesome, but most or these pieces are repetitive and easy to learn. The difficulty lies in a lack of fingering instructions or dynamics. One of my favorite books to play, however, that said.
As a side note -- if you happen to be a Battlestar Galactica fan and that's how you ended up here, yes, the piece played in "Valley of Darkness" is included in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to limber up the fingers
I agree with everything previous reviewers have written about these pieces. They are repetative, and ad nauseum, is a good term. They are easy to tackle in one to two sittings, but the real value is how well they limber up my fingers for some more serious playing.More fun than the usual scales and chord inversions. After a few minutes of working these pieces Mozart and Beethoven pieces run more smoothly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Minimalist style
If you already know and like the minimalist style from Philip Glass, you'll have more chances on liking the musics on this album.
It's really a mood thing. Sometimes you will play and love it, sometimes you'll just get bored over it. That's also valid for listeners.
Some people will love it, some people will get sleepy.
Still, a great aquisition for intermediate piano students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and repetitive, but somehow succeeeds with that
If you can play arpeggios worth a cent, you can play this flawlessly in one to two practice sessions per piece. The pieces consist of only a few lines of music each, which are repeated ad nauseum throughout the songs. It's an interesting style that provides good background music, but kind of grates on the ears after a while. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Some of Laura Sullivan's best pieces!

Laura Sullivan's "Piano Sheet Music Collection" is a compilation of fifteen pieces from four of her CDs, transcribed by the artist herself. Most of the pieces are intermediate to an upper intermediate level, and all are fun to play. Many have running eighth notes in the left hand, which makes the timing easier, and most are in easier key signatures. Only one of the pieces is from Laura's "Piano Solos" album, which is a little surprising, and "Hope For The Sun" also appears on "Pianoscapes" as "Hope For the Trees." Including that one, there are five pieces from "Pianoscapes For the Trails of North America," six from "Mystical America," and four from "Feast of Joy and Love." There are somenotation problems and mistakes - especially in some of the earlier pieces - but nothing that would prevent the player from being able to master them. I've been enjoying playing all fifteen of the pieces, but a couple of favorites as "Pachelbel for the Potomac" (a variation on Canon in D), "Pictograph Cave," "Sedona," and "Morning In the Meadow." This is a really nice collection, and it's available in book form or download. Recommended! ... Read more
