2-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst attempts at poetry I have ever seen
It's a novel story idea, but the rhyming is some of the worst I've ever seen. The grammer is atrocious.Judge for yourself:

They drove the picnickers away,
They chased the farmers from their hay,
They stung Lord Swell in his fat bald pate,
They dived and hummed and buzzed and ate,
And the noisy, nasty nuisance grew
Til the villagers cried, "What can we do?"

Ugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars All time favorite at our house
This book is a clear favorite of my kids (3 1/2). The pictures are engaging and funny, and the text is simple but clever rhymes. We read this book repeatedly and it never gets old. My daughter has read it so many times that she sometimes "reads" it to herself, getting most of the text correct. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic to be shared with every generation!
I, too, discovered this book as a child and fell in love with it.I first came across it at my dentist's office when I was seven years old and begged my mother to buy it for me.She did and would read it over and over again to my sister and me.The illustrations are the best. We loved poring over the pages and examining the unique expressions the illustrator drew on every one of those faces. No two were alike. My mom called them 'zany'. We each had a favorite character in the book-mine was Bap the Baker, my sister's was Farmer Seed (whose hat comes down so far on his face all you can see is his nose and his mustache~hilarious!) But the most endearing part of this book for me and my sister were the rhymes. They were incredibly well thought out and the meter is perfect! Now that I'm a parent, I especially enjoy the message the book conveys: if we work together as a team, we can solve any problem, no matter how big! I enjoy reading this book to my children and look forward to sharing this book with my grandchildren.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Toddlers
We just bought this book a week ago for my 2.5 year old son. He absolutely loves it! We have read it at least twice a day all week and I believe his love of this particular book will continue for awhile. It is very cute when he recites the lines of towns people in the book (e.g., "What do we do?" and "Use my field." etc.). He is captivated by it. I l also like the book because it is a little different from so many other kids books. It is not about naming objects, going to sleep, etc. It is just a short, imaginative story.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my and my son's all time favorites
I loved this book as a child, and now my 2 yr old son adores it too. At storytime, he chants "jam sandwich! jam sandwich!" The book is written in verse, so it's really fun to read (important for mom and dad) and the pictures are full of fantastic little details that keep my son entertained read after read. Plus it's just a great story of a town coming together, being creative and resourceful, and a happy ending. ... Read more

Product Description
Lily and Salma are best friends. They play together and stick together through thick and thin. But who would have ever thought that ordinary peanut butter or plain old hummus could come between them? Lily and Salma don’t quite understand each other’s tastes, but does that mean they can't be friends? They understand far better than a lot of gown ups that these things hardly matter and that friendship is the most important thing of all.

Her Majesty,Queen Rania’s children’s book is inspired by her own experience.  As written by Kelly Dipuchio, it is a warm-hearted and gently humorous fable about two girls who become aware of their subtle cultural differences, only to have their friendship strengthened as a result. Her Majesty travels the world promoting children’s causes as well as cross-cultural understanding and tolerance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book aboutFriendship and Universal Values
This isa wonderful book about friendship and universal values. I bought two copies: one for my grand daughters and
one as a birthday gift for a friend's daughter. It was only after I received the booksthat I discovered that the book had been translated into many languages but NOT into Hebrew. Israel is the only democratic country in the Middle East. It is unconscionable and discriminatory that a book by anAmerican publisher would do this. If the book had been published in Jordan we would not have a say, But in America where there is freedom of speech, I express my opinion. What do you think?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids
Queen Rania shared from the heart. I found the book was very large in size. Would have liked it in a smaller size to handle it easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars A funny presentation many kids will recognize in themselves
THE SANDWICH SHOP tells of two best friends who always eat together and like all the same things - except food! When a food fight breaks out over a sandwich, the friendship seems threatened. Tricia Tusa's fine drawings lend to a funny presentation many kids will recognize in themselves.

Product Description

Being a monster isn't all frightening villagers and sucking blood. Monsters have their trials, too. Poor Frankenstein's cupboard is bare, Wolfman is in need of some household help, and it's best not to get started on Dracula’s hygiene issues. What could be scarier?

Nineteen hilarious poems delve into the secret lives of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bigfoot, Godzilla, and others. In a range of styles that pay homage to everyone from Charles Schulz to John James Audubon, the monstrously talented Adam Rex uncovers horrific--and clever--truths you won't want to miss.

3-0 out of 5 stars Laugh until your face hurts
Read this with your kids, it is howlingly funny.Get in on the joke!

Adam Rex is amazingly talented. The range of illustration/typefont styles/poetry rhythms - every monster gets his own- the quality of the poetry, the sing-alongs ("all the girls in France"... "B-I-N-G-O"... "The Girl from Ipanema"... even "Pop Goes the Weasel.") and the great humor - this is a book to love.

It is for BIG KIDS.

You will want to pre-screen this book for your family. It is full of ghoulish humor and carefully rendered gross-out body parts, it features zombies and all sorts of monsters, and uses words like poop and Turdzilla (a giant poop left by Godzilla) and "naked ladies" ... and really, you have to know about monsters and how to defeat them. This is a book built for reading out loud with your kids.Enjoy it together.

We love it.Especially the Invisible Man -- he makes a snow angel and appears on a milk carton.Just really funny. So creative.
Parents note: fear of dentists, gross out, lots of different poem structures.Hilarious.Some things are very gross -- parents need to pre-read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Much too scary for children
This book is much too scary for children. Once we got it I was very surprised by the pictures that accompany the poems. Very disturbing! I think this book is great for adults and older children but not the lower end of the target age range (5 years old).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treat for Kids of All Ages!
Here are some lines to describe this book best,
Aside from its zing
And aside from its zest.

It's hard to go wrong with monsters and food,
Even after a long day or
When you're in a bad mood.

Monsters, zombies, and even a Yeti
Do everyday things
Like eating spaghetti.

They don't lurk or hide or scare.
Instead, they visit the barber
To sort out their hair.

Adam Rex wins the prize for turning spooky to fun,
And for weaving a joke through
A well-crafted pun.

I'm grown-up and I laughed `till I cried.
It just goes to prove that
I'm still a kid inside!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich" takes the cake!
"Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich" has been one of the most entertaining books I have ever bought my son.I bought it when he was about 2 and he loved it from the moment we opened it!I wish there were more books like this. This book is cool.FYI, it is not scary. The illustrations are great; there's an element of that scariness but that just makes it fun.I have given copies to other kids for their birthdays. In fact, we gave our copy to our day care.I've been meaning to buy another but haven't yet - but I still remember our favorite poems. My son knew the end of every line of the poem Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich. We LOVED the witch poem - I always read it in my witchiest voice: "Cackledy cack and jiggedy jig, sit on a monkey and snack on a pig.Hickory dickory cackledy coo - cack cack a doodle a doo!"He asked for this book over and over again until we finally got a little sick of it.You know a book is good when you've practically memorized the entire thing! It's very handy when you start getting sleepy and you can just close your eyes and keep reading:-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, A Children's Book I Don't Cringe About Reading
This is by far the funniest book for children that I've read in a while-- and as the mother of a five-year-old, I read a lot of children's books.Reading this, I was reminded of the fun that I had when I first heard Shel Silverstein's "Where The Sidewalk Ends" when I was a child.

Probably the highest endorsement it can receive, though, comes from my son, who laughed so hard that he said, "It's so funny, I feel like I'm going to vomit." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious!
Simple Italian Sandwiches is much more than a sandwich book - it's about eating simply, eating well and enjoying each and every bite.I can't say enough good things about this cookbook -- it has taught me to look at food in new ways that lead to delicious and nutritious meals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Panini's Ever
These recipes are delicious.Using the tips on breads and fillings in this book took my paninis to a whole new level.I highly recommmend this book to anyone who is imterested in making seriously good paninis.

3-0 out of 5 stars A place to start
Good ideas for sandwiches but I always tweak the recipes in some way or other.

2-0 out of 5 stars You don't need this book to make a panini
I do believe that at some point everyone will own their own restaurant, have a Food Network TV show and /or their own cookbook. This book is evidence of this.

The authors are friends and partner's of Mario Batali. They are not Italian. They have been to Italy and had a panini. They opened up a cute little panini bar in NYC and charge way too much money I am sure for a simple sandwich. I think it is sweet how they try to pretend to be regular people with their no kitchen little panini place even though they are part of the Batali business empire. Strangely - even though the recipes are so simple a monkey could crank out panini's they needed a co-author. I don't know for what since almost all the recipes read like this:

Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil Panini

Put sliced tomato on ciabbatta roll with mozzarella and a few leaves of basil. Grill in panini press. Slice in half and serve.

It is a small book with only a few photos of food but a bunch of those arty photos of a restaurant chalkboard, a few people in the sandwich shop, a drizzle of oil, a close-up of a dining check. I mean - please. How about some photos of sandwiches? Duh?

Panini's are really in right now and there are many books coming out this year on them. My recommendation is try to catch Wolfgang Puck on HSN when he is hawking his panini grill - he will show you more panini's then you will ever need to know in about fifteen minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Panini and Tramezzini
I just returned from Roma. One of the things we ate the most for lunch was Tramezzini, due to the heavy availability of them everywhere. They almost always offer to grill it for you. We also noticed that nearly every one we saw had sliced boiled eggs on it. I had one that was a simple chicken salad with green olives, sliced hard boiled eggs, slice of cheese, and rocket (arugula). The sandwich was fantastic. My girlfriend had one that was just bologna and artichokes and it was out of this world. We don't even like bologna but for some reason in Italy, it's edible. I haven't actually made a recipe from this book yet, for it is a gift for my girlfriend and she will be receiving it tonight. I did however read through it and was very happy to see the way it was written. From the basic ingredients list and the several trips I've taken to Italy in my life, I know that this is one great book. If I can remember that I wrote this, I'll update it in a month or so. ... Read more

I work in an EC center, and this book is great for our food unit. The boy hides bugs in the sandwich for his sister to find. The kids love it, and you can work on sequencing with felt pieces from the book and discuss the concepts of: on top, on the bottom, first, last, next...

This book is a must have for all parents who have an older son and a younger daughter. The book is pure joy and fun.My grandson loved having this book read to him, eyes twinkling about the thought of all the tricky things that went into making this very special sandwich for his sister.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mischievous fun!
This little book is colorful, and the pop open surprises on each page keep little ones interested to see what's next. 5-0 out of 5 stars 2 generations of love for this book
This was my number one favorite storybook as a child and now it is a favorite of my 2 daughters. The ryhming sentences are silly and the illustrations are fun, but what really makes this such a special book is the imagination behind the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars So good to my baby.

Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preschool Book on Tape
I got three books-on-tape for my grandson, who just turned four, to listen to in the car. This is the one he always asks for. Sometimes he'll follow along in the book and then will ask me to replay it so he can listen to it without the book. The reader is very dramatic yet easy to understand. The story is engaging and the pictures are attractive. I would recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood memories
Having lived in the USA as a very young child I do not remember much, this book being one of my few memories! Product Description
When Nancy Silverton began serving sandwiches one night a week at Campanile, her and husband Mark Peel’s award-winning restaurant, she envisioned a laid-back and intimate evening when she’d be able to relax, chat with customers, and have some fun devising new and creative recipes. Well, she hasn’t had much time to relax: Sandwich Night became one of Campanile’s busiest nights, a vastly popular weekly tradition in Los Angeles and the place to be on Thursdays. And since then, sandwiches have become the latest craze to hit the American food scene.

The reason for Sandwich Night’s success is easy to understand: the sandwiches are incredible. They’re gourmet meals that happen to sit on bread, the furthest thing away from the boring old sandwiches that we usually content ourselves with. Instead of PB&J or tuna salad, how about Braised Artichokes, Ricotta, and Mint Pesto with Pine-Nut Currant Relish? Or Eggplant, Seared Tuna, and Anchoïade? Or even Bacon, Avocado, and Watercress? These open-faced sandwiches are innovative dishes that taste wonderful, look beautiful, and are perfect for entertaining.

The closed-faced sandwiches are delicious new takes on well-loved standards like the Croque Monsieur, the Monte Cristo, the Reuben, and, of course, everyone’s favorite, the Classic Grilled Cheese. Also included are Nancy’s creative sort-of sandwiches—Fondue the Swiss Way, Snackbreads, and Skewered Mozzarella—and tea sandwiches, wonderful creations that will banish memories of limp watercress and insipid egg salad forever. As if this isn’t enough, there are the mouthwatering sandwich cakes and cookies, like the Open-Faced Berry Brioche Sandwich, Chocolate Cake Club Sandwich, and Almost Oreos.

There are recipes for some truly addictive bar snacks, like Cheese Fritters and Candied Spicy Walnuts, to serve before the meal. And there are also recipes for tantalizing spreads and condiments that go well beyond the ordinary. Finally, for the cook who wants to make everything from scratch, Nancy has included recipes for different breads, from Brioche to Hot Dog Buns, based on those from her world-famous La Brea Bakery.

Written in Nancy’s charming, down-to-earth style, these recipes are versatile and easy to follow. As good to look at as they are to eat, these sandwiches offer a new, creative solution to entertaining and will be a valuable addition to the home cook’s repertoire. The result: Sandwich Night is sure to be a hit in your home, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning from the Masters
As a culinary school student, we are always being encouraged to improve our palates and taste outside of our comfort zones. We also need to start planning where we want to end up cooking.A fine dining establishment, a steakhouse---choices, choices? My goal in reading this book was two-fold:improve my thoughts on the good old sandwich and keep my eye on a future career in a breakfast+lunch establishment. This book accomplished both goals. The sandwich combinations are original and everyone I tried was tasty. The sauces and desserts were also fresh and not a loser among the five I tried out.The only real issue with the book is so very few photos.I know photos add cost to books and I appreciated the lower cost of this cookbook. But, as someone working on her "presentation" skills, descriptions would have been helpful if choosing to have fewer photos. This book will stay in my GIANT cookbook collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars i guess it's OK
Gave as a gift.I guess they liked it.I'm sure there's some good sandwiches in there.Mmmmm sandwich.Go eat some Jason's Deli for a great sandwich!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.
This is a very nice book, many interesting and unusual recipes. But most recipes are neither atractive for a home cook, or for a culinary professional. This book could be so much better if many of the unatractive and complicated sandwich recipes would be switched to something more friendly like Campaniles short rib, dijon mustard, caramelized onions, gruyere cheese sandwich.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, GoodIdeas
This book is good for the person who both likes good sandwiches and sandwiches that are a little different from the usual.

It will also give you ideas of your own.

If you like to make homemade soup and sandwiches you will thoroughly enjoy your investment. This book also gives you lots of choices, its also by a great author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grill me a cheese!
The author really gets it right. The trick to a good sandwich isn't a trick at all. When you have a food that has five ingredients, every one of them needs to be very good, and very fresh. The recipes in the book are simple and delicious.I especially like the trick of making the grilled cheese sandwich, then opening it after it is finished cooking and slipping in a cool slice of tomato.Fantastic!

Trisha MacAvie Sutton is just off her shift as a Police Officer and decides to hit a convenience store before heading home. After all, there isn't much at home waiting for her since her husband died.Walking down an aisle, Trisha sees the back of someone who reminds her of her high school days, but it couldn't be one of the two men she had a major crush for - could it?

Nazz Pisani and Pasquale Deluca, Italian cousins, were the star soccer players for their high school team and after the last big game they just seemed to disappear. Everyone knows they were very sick right up until they made the game and helped win it.That fateful night they really noticed Trisha, the shy cheerleader at the after-game celebration.

Nazz and Pasquale have been waiting for Trisha for a very long time and now just might be the time to let her know. After a night of amazing sex, Trisha has even more questions about the cousins than before.Nazz and Pasquale do have a lot to tell Trisha, but one thing might blow up all the dreams they have all been having.

Sandwich Play is a fun and very sexy meeting between a shy cheerleader who grew up much stronger and two very sexy men from her past.Trisha can't believe when she comes face to face with both Nazz and Pasquale and really knows her dreams are coming true when the passion explodes between them that night. Not everything is as it appears and I was right there with Trisha when she went hunting her twosome to get some very direct answers to her questions.Sandwich Play is a smoking erotic story, with just a touch of something else, to heat up a cold winter's night.

Book Description
Slow-roasted meats, marinated vegetables, surprising flavor combinations, this is not your mother’s sandwich.

With acclaimed restaurants located across the United States, and a high-profile job as head judge of the hit show Top Chef, Tom Colicchio is one of the best-known chefs and personalities in the culinary world today. His popular chain of ’wichcraft sandwich shops is known for crafting sandwiches with high-quality fresh ingredients prepared to Colicchio’s exacting standards. And since the first ’wichcraft opened in 2003, diners can’t seem to get enough.

In ’wichcraft, Colicchio shares the shops’ secrets with step-by-step recipes for all their best-loved offerings. You’ll learn how to create new classics like Roasted Turkey with Avocado, Bacon, Onion Marmalade, and Mayonnaise, and Sicilian Tuna with Fennel, Black Olives, and Lemon; and elevate basic cold cuts through imaginative combinations like Smoked Ham with Avocado and Butter, and Salami with Marinated Cauliflower and Bitter Greens. Routine staples are refashioned into unforgettable meals, like Onion Frittata with Roasted Tomato and Cheddar, and Slow-Roasted Pork with Red Cabbage, Jalapeños, and Mustard. ’wichcraft is stuffed with sandwiches like these, and many more, that will add something special to both your lunchbox and your life.

With 100 full-color photographs, recipes for pantry items including dressings and condiments, and a host of sandwich cookies and ice cream treats to round out your meals, this is the book to get a little ’wichcraft magic going in your own kitchen.

From 'wichcraft: Roasted Turkey with Avocado, Bacon, Balsamic Onion Marmalade, and Mayonnaise

This recipe is one of our biggest sellers but, interestingly, each customer cites a different reason the sandwich is special. One says that she could eat the onion marmalade with a spoon for breakfast daily. Others can’t say enough about the bacon. Tom applauds Sisha’s decision to cut the turkey thicker, thus showcasing its moistness. This is an ensemble piece, with no clear headliner. While we use ciabatta, this sandwich would work as well on country bread, too.

Ingredients

  • 6 fresh sage leaves

  • 1 (3- to 4-pound) boneless turkey breast

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 12 slices bacon

  • 4 ciabatta rolls

  • 1/2 cup Balsamic Onion Marmalade

  • 1 ripe avocado, halved, pitted, peeled, and sliced

  • 4 tablespoons Mayonnaise

Note: Don’t cook the bacon over too high heat or the fat will burn. When you’re done, save the fat you’ve rendered and store it in the freezer. The next time you’re roasting some vegetables, toss some bacon fat in with them!(Makes 4 sandwiches)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Slide the sage leaves under the skin of the turkey breast and place the turkey on a sheet pan. Rub the skin with the butter and season generously with salt and pepper. Roast the turkey for 1 to 1½ hours, until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Baste the meat with its juices throughout. (Keep in mind that the meat will continue to cook even after it’s removed from the oven, so be careful not to cook it too long.) Allow the meat to rest before slicing, or cool completely.

In a heavy skillet over medium-high heat, cook the bacon until golden brown and crisp on both sides. Transfer to paper towels to drain.

Slice the ciabatta rolls in half. Place the turkey slices on the bottom halves and top with the marmalade. Place the bottom and top halves of the rolls in the 350°F oven and remove once the marmalade is heated through and the bread is toasted. Top the marmalade with the bacon, followed by the avocado. Evenly spread the mayonnaise on the top halves of the rolls. Close the sandwiches, cut into halves, and serve.

From 'wichcraft: Chocolate Cream’wich

Two surprises set this cookie apart: The first is that the filling is made with a chocolate ganache as opposed to just a frosting. The cream and the chocolate melt together perfectly, yielding a satisfyingly smooth texture to the filling itself. In contrast to the creaminess is the second surprise: the cocoa nibs, little pieces of roasted cacao beans. These bits add a crunchy texture that is wholly and delightfully unexpected.

Ingredients

For the cookie:

  • For the cookie

  • 1/3 cup cocoa nibs

  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 2/3 cup dark brown sugar

  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate (64% cocoa), melted in a double boiler

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

For the filling:

  • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate (64% cocoa), finely chopped

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

(Makes 1 dozen sandwich cookies)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350ºF.

To make the cookies: Grind the cocoa nibs in a coffee grinder or food processor until a fine powder. In the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, combine the butter, ground cocoa nibs, and the sugars on medium speed until well mixed. Add the melted chocolate and the vanilla. Sift together the dry ingredients and add to the bowl. Mix into a smooth dough and chill in the freezer for 5 minutes.

Transfer the dough to a large surface covered with a layer of parchment paper. Top with another layer of parchment and gently roll the dough into a ¼-inch-thick sheet. To prevent the cookies from sticking as you cut them, carefully remove the top layer of parchment and sprinkle some flour over the sheet of dough. Replace the parchment, flip the dough, and release the parchment on the other side. Cut the dough into 2½-inch round cookies and space ½ inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Gather any leftover scraps of dough and roll and cut as described above. Repeat until you have no dough left. Bake the cookies for about 15 minutes, turning the pan 90 degrees halfway through baking, until you can smell the toasted chocolate. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack. Cool completely. Once cool, the cookies should be crisp.

To make the filling: Place the chocolate, butter, and salt in a medium mixing bowl. In a small saucepan, bring the cream to a boil and pour one-third of the cream over the chopped chocolate to melt the chocolate. Add the rest of the cream and stir until smooth. Let cool to room temperature.

Place half of the cookies with the top side (the most attractive) down. Using a piping bag or a spoon, evenly distribute the filling among those cookies, and close into sandwiches with the remaining cookies. Gently press down. Serve immediately or store the cookies in a cool place.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your ordinary sandwich
This cookbook provides a lot more than variations on a ham and cheese sandwich. For example, the peanut butter and jelly provides a homemade jelly recipe.

I have made a few of the sandwiches, and they have all been good. I especially liked the meatloaf sandwich. Some of the ingredients are not things that most people would have in their pantry (i.e. truffle oil), but a lot of the recipes have pretty standard ingredients. I especially enjoyed the onion marmalade. It is as tasty as I hoped it would be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sandwich book
I first went to "Witchcraft" restaurant before I purchased the book and I was spell bound...... and Thanks to Amazon.com you make it affordable for all to enjoy this product as well as many more
Thank you Amazon and " Witchcraft" I highly recommend this book to everyone :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book of Ideas
On the front cover Tom Colicchio writes "craft a sandwich into a meal" and thats exactly what he does in his book. As a restaurant owner I appreciate sandwich ideas that don't follow the same beaten path that you find in many books. I found numerous ideas with this book! Your pairing of different meats with fruits, creative sauces and spreads was especially intriguing. I highly recomend this book for foodies that have a passion for the kitchen and appreciate creative culinary minds! Some of the sandwiches take some prep work from the pantry but great food is worth a little time investment! Keep up the good work Chef!

5-0 out of 5 stars People are missing the point
Yes, this is a book of sandwiches. No, they are not something you can just throw together on the spot, but most of these sandwiches can turn great leftover meats and ingredients into a great second night's dinner. All you need is a little pre-planning. I often have leftovers when I make short ribs, turkey, or steak and they work perfect with this book. Also, many of the condiments that are prepared for these sandwiches keep for several weeks and can be utilized in many other types of meals. I have really enjoyed this book and have not found it too daunting for a weeknight meal
and leftover lunch. If you enjoy cooking and really like sandwiches then this is a great book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Useful Information
I had never heard of Tom Colicchio until watching the Top Chef series, and was skeptical about a cookbook from him. However, since then I have purchased both this and his Think Like a Chef, and am enjoying both of them.'Wichcraft was on display at Williams-Sonoma along with bottled versions of some of his condiments, so I decided to look at it and ended up taking it home.

Tom is a good teacher and this book is not just sandwich recipes, but lots of ideas on how to create your own -- such as the order in which to put the ingredients so they blend better in texture and moisture and don't squish out when you bite, or toasting only the inside surface of the bread so you don't cut the roof of your mouth. This type of information is scattered throughout the book in pages between the recipes, and I have found it to be very helpful.Yes, it is a gourmet sandwich book and not very practical for the daily lunchbox, but with so many people making paninis and small meals and such, it is very inspiring in how to combine flavors -- and even how to select which breads you use with them. Both this and Think Like a Chef have given me new ways to look at cooking creatively and inventing my own flavor combinations based on what is fresh and available, after being grounded in the basics. ... Product Description

Now you can re-create the best and most inventive sandwiches in America right in your own kitchen. In this eating tour of the nation, those gurus of the road, Jane and Michael Stern, hunt down nearly 100 examples of supreme sandwichery. You'll enjoy mouthwatering discoveries from nearly every state, from California (grilled Gruycre with leeks on multigrain from a neighborhood bakery in Los Angeles)to Maine (an overflowing, warm lobster roll from a seaside diner) to Florida (a Cuban: ham, pork, Swiss, and garlicky salami with pickles, lettuce, and tomato). The Sterns have tracked down America's best muffuletta (cold cuts and cheese topped with a bold and briny olive salad on Italian bread) and the specialty of Louisville, Kentucky (the Hot Brown: white turkey meat under sizzling cheese with tomato and bacon), not to be confused with Hot Truck (a hot pizza sub baked open-face, a campus sensation in Ithaca, New York). Each of the legendary heroes, hoagies, wraps, grinders, blimps, gyros, and subs comes with its own quirky story, making this book as much fun to read as it is to cook from.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of variety and regional specialties
This is a good cookbook for people, like myself, who enjoy reading cookbooks. Each recipe has a back story and trivia preceeding it. I really like the variety of recipes included in this book and that there are so many regional specialties, such as hot browns and bierocks. I have only made a few of the recipes so far, but we have enjoyed the ones we've tried. My husband especially enjoyed the ham po' boys.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because several of the recipes call for ingredients that you have to order from the restaurant. Since I don't plan to order tons of ingredients from the various restaurants, I'll either have to find some sort of comparable substitute or not use those recipes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not hungry? You will be!
Wonderfully written with a full page picture and a delightfully detailed description devoted to each delicious sandwich.
Makes you want to hop in the car and visit each place!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very litte to chew on
Like other reviewers said the lack of photos made the sandwiches listed in the book a lot duller and less tasty than they should have been.

But my main complaint is with the sandwiches themselves.

Does anyone really need two bacon and egg sandwich recipes (one with cheese, the other without?)It boggles the mind that they couldn't find more interesting sandwiches to list in this book. There were very few that I hadn't actually tried myself in my years of sandwich eating and so I was left disappointed and hungry for more!

Worse than that, some of the sandwiches had ingredients that would be impossible to find, the rolled, giant bologna for example.I don't mind doing a little searching for ingredients, but I can't see how else that bologna sandwich could be made.At the least the authors should have listed substitutions that would work even if they wouldn't be as good as the real thing.

The authenticity of ingredients was suspect too; thousand island dressing on a reuben instead of Russian dressing and the salami in the cuban mix sandwich (the correct name is a medianoche, midnight snack). The salsa was missing lime juice and the roasted green chile was missing cotija, maybe a fried egg even, odd to say the least, I could go on.

I was hoping for some new ideas, some strange combos that I could add to the rotation and sadly there was only one sandwich recipe that I could see adding and that was for the muffaletto, the olive salad sounds delicious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sandwich book
It took me a while to decide to buy this book."Do you really need a cookbook to make sandwiches?" I was asked more than once.Well, just to make sandwiches, no.But this book is so much more.It really is a book about regional differences, which so many critics like to insist are all but dead.I am originally from Pennsylvania and now live in Alaska and have travelled widely all over the country for a job, and I can tell you that America's regions are alive and well, and moreover, are eating widely different things.Since I am interested in what those things might be and why they eat them, I find this sort of collection fascinating. This book did not disappoint me.Although I agree with the other reviewers that pictures would have been nice, we are talking about sandwiches here.Presumably, they will not look all that different. It would have been nice, but for me it is not a dealbreaker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read and cook from
This book, quite obviously, features sandwiches - and a wealth of them! It is a recent publication (May 2007), but the design harkens back to eateries from the `50s and `60s. It truly reads as if you are sitting with a good friend while they tell you about all the best sandwiches they've ever eaten while traveling North America. The authors paint a vivid picture that more than makes up for the missing photos.

You get the history of the diner, the sandwich, or the proprietor, plus the recipes to recreate them at home. We thoroughly loved the Ham and Pear Crisp from Hell's Kitchen in Minneapolis MN. I've earmarked the Hoosier Tenderloin, the Green Tomato BLT, and Old-Fashioned Beer Battered Brains (just kidding on that last one!). Since it is easy to search the book by location, the next time I travel, I'll use it to seek out the best food.

Product Description

Lola Gale has lost her marbles. Literally. Nick Trunk, private investigator, has been hired to find them. He’s a very good detective, but this case is a tough nut to crack. The only clues are an ostrich feather and lots of peanut butter—delicious peanut butter. Will Nick be able to solve this sticky crime? Monochromatic illustrations give this hilarious whodunit the dramatic feel of an old black-and-white movie, while endearing animals characters, plentiful P.I. and peanut puns, and a suspenseful but-not-too-hard-to-follow mystery make this a crime story that’s hard to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mytery At Club Sandwich is worth the read!
Nick Trunk, Private Detective, is a trench coat-wearing elephant who solves crimes and gets paid in peanuts. Nick's latest case involves Lola Gale, a foxy fox who sings every night at Club Sandwich. Lola has literally lost her marbles, the sparkly good luck charms that she holds before every show, and she's hoping Detective Trunk will catch the culprit. Minutes into the case, Nick comes up with two clues--a smear of gourmet La Peanut Goo and an ostrich feather. He also stumbles upon three possible suspects, but in the end, only one of these animals has a clear motive and no alibi. Author and illustrator Doug Cushman's Mystery at Club Sandwich, published in 2004 by Clarion Books, pokes fun at film noir with this clever story filled with double entendres that both children and adults will appreciate. Cushman brings the world of Club Sandwich to life with black and white illustrations that evoke the murky, shadowy world of film noir. While some readers may solve the mystery before Nick does, the story is saved when the long-nosed detective finds Lola's marbles in an unexpected place.

4-0 out of 5 stars Animated Noir? Yes, please!
Imagine a film noir with all the trappings--a gritty detective, a femme fatale, a shadowy, black-and-white atmosphere. Now imagine that the characters are cartoon animals in sophisticated clothing and the film is condensed into a hilarious and adorable picture book, and you have Doug Cushman's Mystery at the Club Sandwich (Clarion Books, 2004).Nick Trunk is an experienced detective--and an elephant--who "works for peanuts," literally. When a pretty kitty named Maggie Trouble walks into his office and requests his help finding a famous singer's lucky marbles, Nick knows he has his work cut out for him.A slew of suspects, including a pig chef whose specialty is peanut butter sauce, a mediocre magician, and an envious feline assistant further complicate matters. Will Nick succeed in cracking the case, or will the marble thief go free? The black-and-white sketch artwork portrays the lively animal cast in fancy garb and classic noir flair, and is a perfect complement to this introduction to mystery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Picture Book of Children's Mystery
Doug Cushman, a veteran creator of mysteries for children, presents another thrilling mystery tale with his expressive black-and-white illustrations. This time, the story is set in the Club Sandwich where Lola Gale, the famous singer, loses her lucky marbles. Detective Trunk, who works for peanuts, is hired to solve the case. During his investigation at the Club Sandwich, Detective Trunk finds three suspects--a magician, a singer's assistant and a chef--and a list of clues: an empty jar of peanut butter, a peanut butter smudge on the door and an ostrich feather. So does he find Lola Gale's lucky marbles? Who has stolen the lucky marbles?

The picture book is a page-turner with its arresting plot and suspense. Detective Trunk's first person voice draws readers up front in the crime scene to participate as a witness. The animal characters are properly portrayed through lively dialogue and personified monologue. The black-and-white illustrations conjure up memories of a classic detective tale. Parents and kids can curl up together to solve this sticky mystery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to own???
We checked this book out of the library at our children's librarian's recommendation, and it's been a hit. However, after a few readings, my son (almost 6) has said that he's ready to move on to "a new mystery because we already know who did it." This statement did come after about 20 readings (1 per night for almost 3 weeks, so I know it was something he enjoyed), and I enjoyed developing voices and personalities for the characters, but I'm not sure the story would hold up for much longer. And, last night, we turned pack to our continual favorites by Dan San Souci featuring the Clubhouse Kids. My recommendation: check it out, don't purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Not Consistent Enough
Very Good, But Not Consistent Enough
Boasting a title more clever than its story, "Mystery at the Club Sandwich" pays homage to the mysteries of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. The black and white illustrations (against an appealing silvery-white background) the clipped language, and the tough-guy stance all parody the "noir" films and books of the 1940's, and much of it is funny and clever. Unfortunately, Doug Cushman doesn't quite sustain the noir sensibility throughout the book, and the parody flattens somewhat after a promising beginning.

The opening scene is taken from the Bogart version of "The Maltese Falcon." Detective Nick Trunk, an elephant with a slight resemblance to Lee J. Cobb, encounters a pretty, fur-laden kitten in his office. While the private eye's digs aren't shabby enough, there's some angled reflection on the wall, and his client has some `lip' on her:

"One morning, the door to my office opened. In walked a beautiful lady. She looked like trouble.
`My name is Trouble,' she said. `Maggie Trouble. Are you Nick Trunk?"
`That's my name,' I said."

Lola explains --in direct, short sentences-- a nicely convoluted story about how her employer, singer Lola Gale, lost her marbles. Real marbles (for good luck). Trunk replies "I will take your case," but like any two-bit detective he wants his payment up front. The elephant works for peanuts. (He will settle for peanut brittle, however). Witty, clever, and smartly written satire.

The authenticity begins to evaporate when Trunk meets Gale, who looks more like Ms. Dumont in the Marx Brothers movies than a femme fatale. She's staid-looking, with real pearls, and an upscale air. Opportunities for noirish illustrations and biting dialogue give way to a more pedestrian mystery exploring clues, questioning multiple suspects--and repeating jokes and puns about peanut butter. Only the chef (a bespeckled pig) and a walrus working at a diner look like character actors from the films this book tries to emulate. A few clues and an insight later, the mystery is solved, with a final page exploding with puns.

Although Cushman's draws well, and he includes some interesting dialogue and characters, the spoof just doesn't feel authentic enough. A better satire would include and parody more noir elements in a manner that would appeal to a wider age range. Cushman does a good job with some of these ingredients: The snappy dialogue, the drawings of the pig, the walrus, and Lola, the contours of the diner, and, later, a more messy detective office. However, the lighting, the characters (especially Nick Trunk), the names, and much of the whole "look" and tone are not consistently authentic. Younger kids aren't going to get all of the film noir allusions without the help of an older reader. Therefore, the author--more so than in other books--has two audiences, kids and adults, and adults' knowledge of the genre should be satisfied. Still, the book is often snappy, and the kitchen and diner "scenes," and Trunk (when drawn looking weary)fit the style. When the elements are there, there's the possibility of discussion with your younger audience.

Generally speaking, the noir film/book parody is just too easy and overdone. It requires meticulous attention to the details, exploiting them in as many clever ways as possible. While I enjoyed the book, and kids will like the humor and the mystery, it was ultimately a bit disappointing. Note: As mentioned by others, the book is dedicated to "Sam, Phil, and Dashiell": Only the latter is a mystery writer, Sam and Phil refer, as fans know, to the fictional heroes Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars sark, i get your point: you like taking naps

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good inspiration but...
There are some meaningful messages in the book. But overall I felt the author was not bringing anything new to the table except hard-to-read doodles. She makes herself sounds like a former lazy bum who is now getting rich off doodling and painting. How nice. The doodles and handwriting really mask the message the book is supposed to convey. But hey, it's a shtick. ... Read more

The life of a thirteen-year-old Harlem youth on his way to becoming a confirmed heroin addict is seen from his viewpoint and from that of several people around him.Amazon.com Review
Dope. Smack. Junk. Heroin. No matter what you call it, youcan't change the fact that 13-year-old Benjie is on it. Oh no ... he'snot hooked, though. He could stop anytime ...really. But why is ayoung kid like Benjie using at all? Originally published in 1973,Alice Childress's novel remains one of the most profound explorationsof an addict's world ever written. What makes this novel different isthat Childress points no fingers and offers no easy answers. Hercharacters' moods and motivations are complex, fresh, unexpected, andcourageously real. Woven into Benjie's own ramblings about hissituation are the thoughts of those involved by association--hismother, stepfather, friends, the pusher, and teachers at hisschool. This narrative technique creates a rich, heroic portrait ofthe social and psychological circumstances of addiction, love, andfamily. ... Read more

THANK YOU FOR SHIPPING THIS BOOK VERY QUICKLY!
This was a reading assignment for a school project, after reading the content of the book, I decided against allowing my child to read it.
HOWEVER, the book was in good condition and was shipped the next day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holdouts in a Dying Community
"A Hero Ain't Nothin But a Sandwich" isn't really about "Benjy", the book's advertised protagonist. It's really about the different people in an inner-city neighborhood, and how they view life. The characters include his passive mother, his hardworking stepfather, his narcissistic grandmother, his caring, yet frustrated white teacher, his black teacher who's obsessed with Black Power, his best friend (with whom he's become estranged), the local pimp/pusher, etc.

Each of these characters speaks in a short monologue. Their talk revolves around 13-year-old Benjy, but they end up talking about life in general. Their neighborhood has crumbled, their municipal (and religious) leaders are mired in corruption, and business has stagnated. Life seems hopeless, but I find that the only one who tries to keep his head up is the stepfather. He's the smartest one in the book. He desperately wants to send his stepson to live on a farm, away from all the bad influences of the city.

The end of the book has a tirade from the stepfather that I think is a must-read for kids. A White social worker says that the boy needs some good heroes to look up to. The stepfather says "what about me, I'm supporting three people plus Uncle Sam on my paycheck, and I can't claim any of them as dependents, so why can't I be seen as the hero?"

5-0 out of 5 stars great story
I read this book in highschool, was a very great story. Teaches young teenagers the consequences of heavy drug use and how peer pressure could affect an adolescents mind to do things to make them look cool but due time put them in a major crisis with themselves. Also lets young readers know that there is no shame in getting help and shows families how to put more attention onto their children to prevent things such as these situations from happening in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Distracting Slang and Accent
Benjie is a thirteen-year-old living in the inner city with his mother, grandmother and his mother's boyfriend, who has been like a stepfather to Benjie for years.Benjie had smoked some marijuana with a friend and thought it was cool, but then one day he cuts class and is hanging out with a group of older boys who are using heroin. Not wanting to seem like a scared little kid, Benjie does it, too. Before long, he is a heroin addict, although he insists he can stop whenever he wants.

This story is told from many points of view--Benjie keeps insisting he's fine and complaining about everyone else around him.Benjie's family is overwhelmed by his addiction, especially when he steals from them.Benjie's friend is upset by the loss of his friendship, and one of his drug dealers feels compelled to explain why he is not at fault for Benjie's addiction. Two of Benjie's teachers, a white man and a black man, are both upset but argue over the right thing to do.In the end, the decision about whether to try to kick the drug habit is Benjie's alone. But is a thirteen-year-old kid strong enough to do what's right?

I liked being able to see the different points of view in this story, and to see how one person's drug addiction affected everyone around him.I also liked that there were no easy answers and no real good guys and bad guys.Even the two teachers who had so much conflict between them each had their reasons for what they were doing.

I found the writing itself distracting. The story was written with accents and slang that disrupted the flow. This story was very sad; I wished there was someone who could have stepped in to help Benjie more.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Hero Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich
13-year-old Benjie from Harlem has a lot of difficulties in his life. He mad many bad choices by choosing to take drugs. He got addicted to heroin and smoking after Kenny and Tiger let him try a bit. Soon his teachers and principle found out about him and had a talk. He's so stubborn that he keeps on denying that he don't get hooked on drugs. After all, he quits drugs because his stepfather saved him.If you are young and want to read this book, I warn you that at first it'll be quite difficult to understand the language in the book, after a while you'll get use to it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yum!
This is a great little cookbook.A fabulous way of adding veggies into your diet, without complicated, time consuming preparation.

I would have never thought of putting a sweet potato slice in a sandwich! The Sweet Potato/Avocado Sandwich does just that.Add to that the most awesome Honey/Lemon/Tahini/Poppy Seed Spread, and the result is a mouthwatering, colorful meal.I also love the spicy spread used in the East Indian Tea Sandwich. So far, I have tried half dozen sandwich recipes, and a few spreads, and I loved all of them.BTW, I am a vegan, and I found the recipes easy to convert from vegetarian to vegan.Sometimes, it's just a question of leaving the cheese out, sometimes the recipes are already vegan, and sometimes it's just a question of substituting vegan version of a product such as mayo.

The book is nearly all about different ways to prepare vegetarian sandwiches, wraps, pita pockets etc.It does include some salads, soups, fries, etc (accompaniaments for sandwiches), and a bunch of yummy spreads. There is also a tiny section of dessert sandwiches (two or three recipes), but I have not tried those. As I mentioned above, some recipes are vegan, or nearly vegan.I like the recipes as written, but I also like to tweak them to my taste and/or use them as a jump-off point to create my own.

The book itself is nicely illustrated with full color photographs, and easy to navigate. It is divided into a "basics" section of spreads, "apetizer" section, three main sections separately featuring each "cold" and "warm" sandwiches, and "wraps", an "accompaniament" section, and the two page "dessert" section.

The only complaint I have is that it is quite a slim volume. It is probably the length of a chapter or two from a conventional cookbook. This is understandable because it deals with a very specific type of food, but still, I would have loved to see a little bit more content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious
This is a great little book - full of commonsense ideas for vegetarian fillings and delicious different fillings as well. I really like it and am glad I bought it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
This recipe book is beautifully done, easy to read, and the pictures are great, too.I've only made one recipe - the Sweet Potato and Avacado Sandwich- easy to make and waaayyyy delicious!

4-0 out of 5 stars Yummy recipes; beautiful book; a little pedantic
This is my second Paulette Mitchell book, and if you're an unsophisticated cook I'm sure the "Tips" she puts on every page will be helpful. I often find them somewhat patronizing, however - defining roma tomatoes, or describing spinach (!), or saying freshly ground pepper is better than pre-ground (well, duh), for example - really basic things like that. She seems to assume her readers are novices, as she did in her book "The 15-Minute Vegetarian Gourmet."Her recipes are great, though, and more sophisticated than her writing and those in her previous book. This book is gorgeous, and as a vegetarian I am always on the hunt for creative lunch ideas. She also has great ideas for preparing your pantry so you always have ingredients on hand to use in these recipes. All in all, a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I had been looking for a book like this for awhile since on the weekends I like to throw together something for lunch but had been running out of ideas. This book got me going again.I love it! Everything I've tried has been great - vegetarians and non have liked everything I've made so far. There are some great spreads in here like the basil pesto, the hummus, the herb butter, the mushroom with almond spread, etc. These can be slathered on the bread and then just add veggies to that or you can do some of the full sandwiches like the Sweet Potato and Avocado sandwich, the grilled eggplant with olive/tomato spread sandwich, the dilled egg salad sandwich, veggie melts etc. Thumbs up on this one! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book.
I wish I hadn't bought this book, I was looking for some simple ideas for sandwiches and wraps. This isn't it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
This is an absolutely lovely cookbook. The bread recipes are fantastic - my focaccia and white bread recipes come from this book, and always turn out great. Because it's a sandwich book, the recipes can easily be adapted if you don't have all of the ingredients on hand, but they are certainly worth going the extra mile for. The Cubano recipe is fantastic, and I find myself making the Inside-Out French Grilled Cheese every summer. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sandwich book
It's a good book for some different sandwich /lunch ideas but it takes quite a few special ingredients to craft these meals. This is not the book to put some variety in your sack lunch that you take to work. THis is the book you need when you have you mother in law over for lunch and you want to impress her with an exotic sandwich

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
I have not personally read this series but my 9 year old has and loves it!He can read a book in a day or two and it's worth one point for his school's Accelerated Reader testing (not sure if you are familiar with it or not).He cracks up reading them and I'm all about trying to find good books that keep his interest and asking for more to read.... Another good series similar to this would probably be Captain Underpants, Wimpy kid series, and he also loved two books about Digory the dragon slayer.Cute series and I highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Superhero who isn't so super al the time.
What a cute book!

Melvin Beederman is a young superhero fresh from the superhero academy on his first assignment in L.A., who 'hasn't had a superhero since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.'

Once Melvin finds himself a place to live- a tree house somewhere- he waits for cries for help. He encounters the bank robbing McNasty brothers, just in time to lose his cape which enables him to fly- even if it takes him six times before he gets off the ground!

In comes Candace, who suddenly has x-ray vision while playing Little Red Riding Hood in her school play. And then she finds she has super strength, which gives her such confidence she catches a purse snatcher and the school's milk money thieves. All while wearing her new cape, which is way too big for her.

Soon Melvin and Candace team up and put the McNasty brothers away, making L.A. safe once again.

Melvin Beederman and the Curse of the Bologna Sandwich (A curse? You'll have to read to find out!) is funny and entertaining and I look forward to reading the series with my three boys! ... Read more
