    Extractions: History: For centuries before Sir Stamford Raffles acquired it from the Sultan of Johor in 1819, Singapore had been virtually abandoned. However, within decades of the change of ownership, in a historical echo of its role today, Singapore had become the main commercial and strategic centre for the region. In 1867, it became a British Crown Colony and housed one of the UK's most important naval bases. This remained unchanged until 1942 when the Japanese army swept down through Malaya and occupied the colony. Three and a half years later the Japanese surrendered in Singapore and the colony resumed its previous status. With the dissolution of the British Empire, Singapore was granted internal self-government in 1959. In 1963 Singapore joined the Federation of Malaysia, but in 1965 broke away from the collapsing federation to become fully independent. Two years later, Singapore was expelled when Lee Kuan Yew, first elected Prime Minister in 1959 and re-elected eight times since, refused to implement a federal edict granting Malays a privileged economic position. The initial outlook was unpromising: Singapore is tiny and has no natural resources apart from a good harbour. However, Lee managed to galvanise the population into building a strong, export-led manufacturing and service economy. Lee Kuan Yew and his political vehicle, the People's Action Party (PAP), enjoyed a virtual monopoly of political power from 1972 until Lee's announcement in 1988 that he would not complete his eighth term nor seek subsequent office.

(From Raffles : An Online Exhibition) In 1819, Raffles, an official with the British East India Company, intervened in a succession dispute and recognised Tengku Husain as Sultan of Singapore in return for allowing the British to open a factory in Singapore. It was only in 1824 that the Malay rulers ceded sovereignty of Singapore to the British. By the beginning of the 19th Century, the British had become a major world power. It was an imperialist power which had turned India into a colony - a place to extract resources by exploiting the people, a place to invest British capital in infrastructure projects, and a market for its manufactured goods. The British needed a port of call between their colony in India and China. There was also competition with the Dutch over control of trade with Southeast Asia. Under benign British rule, Singapore became a major trading port and the centre for the export of rubber. It was a time of peace and prosperity.

    Extractions: 29 January 1819 changed Singapore's fate it transformed her from a small fishing village into a prosperous, advanced country. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who was the British Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen at that time, felt that a new British trading port was needed to the south of the Malay Peninsula. Singapore was then surrounded by forest and swamp where some Malays, Chinese and Orang Laut lived. When Raffles caught sight of this tiny island, he knew he had found the very place he was looking for. It not only lay on the main trade route between China, Europe and India, it was also an excellent harbour suitable for big ships to anchor with plentiful wood and fresh water that people could use. Raffles immediately went into action. Together with his assistant, Major William Farquhar, he went to look for Temenggong Abdul Rahman (the chief of Singapore). The Temenggong was willing to give Raffles permission but he had no power, for Singapore belonged to the Sultan of Johor. Today, there are two statues of Raffles, one black and one white. One of them is located in front of Victoria Theatre and Victoria Memorial Hall where he is believed to have landed in Singapore in 1819 at this very spot. He also started a school for the people, known as Singapore Institution, and started the first Botanic Gardens at the foot of Fort Canning. Our school
