Extractions: Singapore History Written accounts of the early history of Singapore are sketchy and the names used to refer to the country are varied. In the third century, a Chinese account gave reference to Singapore as Pu-luo-chung, or "island at the end of a peninsula". In 1320, however, the Mongol court sent a mission to a place called Long Yamen (Dragon's Tooth Strait) to get elephants. This probably referred to Keppel Harbour. A visitor from China, Wang Dayuan, who came around 1330, called the main settlement Pancur (spring), and reported that there were Chinese already living here. One of the earliest references to Singapore as Temasek, or Sea Town, was found in the Javanese Nagarakretagama' of 1365. The name was also mentioned in a Vietnamese source at around the same time. By the end of the 14th century, the Sanskrit name, Singapura (Lion City), became commonly used. At that time, Singapore was caught in the struggles between Siam (now Thailand) and the Java-based Majapahit Empire for control over the Malay Peninsula. According to the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals), Singapore was defeated in one Majapahit attack, but Iskandar Shah, or Parameswara, a prince of Palembang, later killed the local chieftain and installed himself as the island's new ruler. Shortly after, he was driven out, either by the Siamese or by the Javanese forces of the Majapahit Empire. He fled north to Muar in the Malay Peninsula, where he founded the Malacca Sultanate. Singapore remained an important part of the Malacca Sultanate; it was the fief of the admirals (laksamanas), including the famous Hang Tuah.

In the 7th Century, a Malayan Buddhist Empire was established on the island of Sumatra. Temasek (Sea Town) as Singapore was then known, was a prosperous trading outpost of this empire. However, it is said that in the 13th Century, a member of the Royal family, Sang Nila Utama, was searching for a site to build a new city. Arriving at the sandy shores of the island, he mistook a tiger for a lion. Taking this as a good omen, he decided to build his new city here, naming it Singapura, the Sanskrit words for Lion City. Singapore's modern name was thus born. During World War II in 1942, the security was rudely shattered when the Japanese invaded North Malaya and advanced towards Singapore. The British administration in Singapore surrendered on February 8, 1942. Under the Japanese ruling, Singapore was renamed Syonan (light of the South), and the commerce died down.

The team discovered the brick foundations of a 19th century prison built, unexpectedly, on a swamp. Knowledge Enterprise spoke to Singapore's pioneer archaeologist, who lectures and researches on Southeast Asian studies in NUS. KE: Besides Bras Basah, where in Singapore have you dug and what are some of your interesting archaeological discoveries? JM: I've dug at Fort Canning, and continue to dig there. The hill was probably a palace in the 14th century; it contains many unusual artifacts, both local and Chinese. I dug at the site of the new Parliament House in 1994-95 and at Empress Place in 1998. All three sites yielded large quantities of artifacts dating back to the 14th century locally made pottery, Chinese porcelain and stoneware, coins, glass, etc. Colonial period sites I've dug include Duxton Hill, Istana Kampung Gelam, and now Bras Basah. There are many more potential sites, in particular in the area between the Esplanade, Stamford Road, Fort Canning, and the Singapore River.

According to the 16th-century Sejarah Melayu, or 'Malay Annals', Temasek, as it was then known, was a flourishing trading post in the 14th century. However, a contemporary Chinese account describes it as a pirate island. It was briefly ruled by the Sumatran prince Parameswara, but invasions by the Thais and Javanese in the 1390s drove him to flee north to Melaka to found the Malay Sultanate there. Singa Pura remained undeveloped until the arrival of Thomas Stamford Raffles.
