Product Description
In August 2009, a group of twenty-eight women came together to design and hook rugs under the guidance of organizer/initiator Laura Coultas and artist/rug hooking consultants Sheila Coultas, Frances Ennis and Maxine Ennis. Inspired by the strong Irish heritage on the Southern Shore, known as the Irish Loop, the women decided to create a body of work that would illustrate Newfoundland and Labrador's strong connection with Ireland.

Hooking Our Heritage uses text and pictures to trace the progress of the rugs and tell the story behind each one. Within these pages, you will find rugs displaying the words, traditions, landscapes, songs and history shared between the country of Ireland and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The finished rugs show Irish blessings, a farrier and his horse, women picking herts, fairies playing in a garden, Celtic symbols and many other examples of the links between Ireland and Newfoundland and Labrador. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Rug hooking is a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap, linen, or rug warp. The loops are pulled through the backing material by using a crochet-type hook mounted in a handle (usually wood) for leverage. In contrast latch-hooking uses a hinged hook to form a knotted pile from short, pre-cut pieces of yarn. Wool strips ranging in size from 3/32 to 10/32 of an inch (2 to 8 mm) in width are often used to create hooked rugs or wall hangings. These precision strips are usually cut using a mechanical cloth slitter; however, the strips can also be hand-cut or torn. When using the hand-torn technique the rugs are usually done in a primitive motif. Sarah Nickerson is a famous rug hooker from Maine who uses this technique. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars CaveatEmptor!
This book was a bit of a disappointment to me.I am a beginning rug-hooker and was hoping for more how-to info, as well as history of rug-hooking, e.g. how sailors used canvas to hook rugs while on long sea voyages. While I admire Ms. Fitzpatrick's work--stunning, to say the least-- I found the book too prosy, and bogged down by what inspires the artist. Yes, I can generate my own ideas from the work featured in the book, but overall the product was not what I expected. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
The only americana item in this book is the cover project. The title should have been "How I Decorated My Beach House in Blue and White".I don't want to make rugs of pails of sand or seashells or a baseball player.I wish I had been able to look inside before deciding whether or not to purchase the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Home decor and a travel journal
The book starts off with a 10-page travel journal.I enjoyed reading about Polly's travels which include book signings, meeting other rug hookers, workshops, a class reunion and a family trip.

A dozen projects are featured between the 80 pages of THE AMERICANA COLLECTION.These are done in red, white, blue and beige colors but if that doesn't fit your décor, simply create them in colors that do.Projects range from the American Flag, to fish, to baseball and one even has a beach theme.

Each project has a material list, cutting instructions and how to create and finish the rug.A color photo of the project is provided. There is also a "blurb" about each one or maybe a tip on how to solve a problem that a particular rug would create when you hook it.Sixteen pages are provided to walk you through the hooking process from hooking supplies down to signing and caring for your rugs. The last three pages are resources, acknowledgments and a bio on the author.

Gather your supplies, set aside some time and create a warm and welcoming hooked piece for your home.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Americana Collection: Hooked Rugs (That Patchwork Place)
This is an excellent book.I loved reading all the history on Polly's family because it actually sets the backdrop for all the rugs. It makes all her work become more personal.I thought it was great that all the patterns are included in the book. ... Read more

The train slackened, a brakeman thrust his head in at the door and shouted Bah,--a mysterious formality observed on American trains as they enter towns,--and an elderly lady, two drummers, and a young man with a satchel got out, followed by the languid envy of the other passengers, who had longer or shorter penances of heat and dust before them.

Product Description
"Use Leftover Fabric" This "user friendly" book was created to give the basic steps in two colonial crafts. It is designed to act alone or as a compliment to Verna's "Rug Hooking & Braiding Made Easy" DVD. This illustrated book shows how various materials are used, basic tools needed and the techniques required. Requests from craftsmen who had a quantity of unused cotton and denim fabrics prompted Verna to create this book. Having been a traditional rug braider using quality woolen fabric, it was a challenge to Verna to experiment with these new fabrics. The information in this book is a result of new ways developed to treat new fabrics.cotton and denim did not have the "bending quality" that you find with wool and fleece. Because of this situation, a new technique was needed. The book covers how each fabric needs to be treated for the best results, as well as the tools needed for that fabric. The craftsman interested in using denim and cotton will be pleased to know that the only tools needed are ayarn needle and a needle and thread. The drawn illustrations will help you to understand the steps fully and the written information will give you guidelines on how to process the different fabrics. This book was intended to teach the basic steps of both hooking and braiding. Illustrations and directions for an oval, rectangle, round hex shaped and flower rug will help you start right away on your new crafts. Another book and 5 DVDs are available form Verna when you decide you want to learn more about the crafts. The "Illustrated Braiding Instruction Manual"(an encyclopedia on braiding) was Verna's first project and is now in it's ninth reprint. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars utilizing yarn
Very inspirational as well as having good instuctions on how to do this technique too.I'm already spinning up the wool to try this on a rug.But one need not be a spinner to do this as there are lots of yarns on the market that can be used.
