Bad News:
The shipping cost was twice the cost of the book.
Otherwise, I have no complaints.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book of it's kind
This book contains a wealth of information, with each sub-section descriptively labeled according to whether it is background, maintenance, diagnosis, or repairs.I have read 16 books on car care, and "Recipes" was the easiest to read and offered the most useful information. This book is a real stand out in the car DIY category.

"Recipes" is appropriate for rank beginners, who will find summaries of car principals as well as step-by-step guides to performing simple diagnosis, service, and repairs.More advanced readers will appreciate the in-depth explanations of how to troubleshooting literally dozens of hard to diagnose problems.

My only quibble with this excellent book is the use of the kitchen metaphore to explain the workings of a car.It did not take away from the book, but in my opinion, it did not add anything either. You may find the comparison to cooking more useful than I did, but even if you don't this book is a gem for learning about cars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes!
If you know nothing about cars, this is the perfect book to start with!It doesn't teach you how to do complicated repairs; mainly it gives you a thorough explanation of how cars work, and it also shows you how to test how well certain car parts are functioning and how to do simpler procedures like replacing filters and valves.

All I knew before reading this was how to open the hood (and you don't even need to know that--it tells you how.)Now I can scan the mechanics' sights on the internet and see terms like "EGR system" and "oxygen sensor" and not even blink an eye--I know what they are and what they do and it actually makes sense!

The best feature of this book is definitely the way it's written. The author doesn't use analogies to other machines that you don't understand either. She compares different car parts to everyday things like rolling pins and tuna cans to help you understand what they look like and what they do.It makes things infinitely less intimidating and easier to understand.Everything is explained step-by-step and system-by-system, and technical terms are introduced slowly enough that you can absorb them.(You definitely need to have enough patience to start reading at the beginning and work your way through, though, because she builds on previous explanations.)

There are also diagnosing sections in the book to help you figure out what's wrong with a sick car and a maintenance chart to give you an idea when to replace things before they break anyway and cause more expensive problems.

A couple of things this book didn't have that I wished it did were price estimates for commonly replaced parts, photographs of parts (it has drawings instead), and a guide on how to negotiate a good deal when buying a car.A good book to get for those features is Auto Upkeep:Basic Car Care.Auto Upkeep is more the kind of book you can flip through. It has a lot of little tips on diagnosing problems and car maintenance separated from the main text in little boxes. It isn't nearly as thorough in its explanations as Recipes.., though, and even though it has photographs that help a lot in locating parts, I think the drawings in Recipes are a lot more helpful in figuring out the big picture of how the parts actually work.In other words, Auto Upkeep makes a good supplement, but defintely get Recipes for Car Care if you want an excellent, understandable explanation of how cars function!

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Great Introductory Car Books
Hundreds of basic car care books are out there, but two that I have are excellent: Recipes for Car Care and Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care. Recipes for Car Care lists basic auto maintenance and diagnosing procedures written in a cookbook type layout. Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care uses the text with a supporting activity CD to give you step-by-step methods for basic automotive procedures. Recipes for Car Care uses well-drawn line art to illustrate concepts. Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care uses both line art to illustrate concepts and photos to show car parts (I really like that!). Recipes for Car Care is more for one who wants to diagnosis and repair their automobile, whereas Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care is more for any car owner that wants to learn more about the automobile, its parts, and car ownership. Both books cover most systems of the automobile (such as fuel, suspension, lubrication). However, in addition to explaining automotive systems, Auto Upkeep also explains the car buying process and automobile insurance basics (such as liability, collision, and comprehensive policies - and what they mean). I recommend that you have both books in your personal library.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's an pretty good book
Overall it's an alright book. The author does her best to break down the complex subject, and it reads pretty well. However, her goal is to de-mystify car repair, and at times the writing is so technical it is difficult to follow. The discussion gets very detailed and you wind up thinking there's much more wrong with your car than you could ever have expected. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy!
I bought this book for the Margaritaville Jerk Salmon recipe.I made it today and it was so good! And 1/3 of the cost of going to restaurant!Thank you Todd Wilbur for making these excellent books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit from Wilbur

I own 3 other food books by Todd Wilbur and they are all great if you love to cook, and want to cook items that taste like the ones you go-out to get, for WAY less money. This book continues the journey of how to imitate the restaurant dishes you love, at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have a food allergy and LOVE Todd Wilbur!Great book!
Great book!I have quite a few of Todd's books and they all have items in there that I make quite frequently! As for reviewers saying that these recipes are high in fat- well then learn how to cook! Most people who are watching their weight use recipes as a guide.Opt for a lower fat cheese, or bake an item instead of frying. This isn't rocket science! Also on another note- Todd faking food allergies to get ingredients... Apparently it is true, I did Google it, and I don't think that was too smart of him to do or publicly announce on Oprah, BUT with these clones of restaurant recipes he has in his books, those of us with real food allergies (I have Celiacs) I can still enjoy these recipes but substitute ingredients I can have.Soooooooo really, however Todd does it, I am glad he does, because I rarely get to enjoy restaurant food at a restaurant because of my allergy- now I can in my own home and, most importantly, rest assure the food is prepared in a allergy safe environment and gluten (or whatever you allergy may be) free!So think about that!Thank you Todd!Keep the recipes coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Secret Recipes is spot on perfect
This book gives me the way to make some of my favorite commercial dishes and have them come out as close to the real thing as is possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book! Read the table of contents before you purchase!
I'm a big fan of Todd Wilbur and love all of his books, including this one. I have tried the BJ's restuartant white cheddar mashed potatoes, and their avocado egg rolls. Both of the recipes came out really good. I have also tried the T.G.I. Friday's tuscan spinach dip and the crispy green bean fries. Once again those recipes were just as good as the restaurants....if not better!
My only suggestion is to visit [...] and view the table of contents before you purchase this book. A lot of recipes in here maybe a repeat if you own other books. If you purchased his recent book off of QVC then you'll see that a lot of the recipes in that book are in here. His website is: [...]. Besides that the book is a gem and for only $10 it will pay for itself with in two meals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK FOR MY TWO FAVORITE HOLIDAYS
Boy, right when Halloween is over I am in full Thanksgiving mode.I've been doing Thanksgiving dinner for my family for over ten years and each ear I seek out at least one or two new recipes to try out on my guinea pigs....errr...guests.This book is culled from the most wonderful recipe site on the internet, allrecipes.com.Long has this been a favored site of mine and millions of other cooks as well. The editors have pulled together 200 of the finest holiday recipes for inclusion in the book.

Among the most valuable sections is the one on preparing for the big feast.it covers what can be done a month before such as getting the invitations out, ordering the turkey or ham, etc. Then we move to two weeks before and prepare by getting making sure you have all the necessary utensils, roasters, and pots, and figuring out where to sit people and your needed space. All this leads up to the big day as you cook the bird and prepare everything else.

From there we move to the recipes and everything from a traditional roasted turkey, to prime rib, deep fried turkey, Alaskan baked Salmon, and honey glazed turkey.I admit I stick to the traditional turkey but I love the vast amount of wonderful side dish recipes. This past Thanksgiving I gave the cheesy green beans a whirl and they were a big hit.Rolls, stuffings, veggies, appetizers..they're all here and well represented.Ahh...and don't forget the deserts!Chocolate Chip Pumpkin bread!Wow...that was some good stuff!

The index is well presented and the recipes canebe found under several listings. For example the Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread will be found under Chocolate, Pumpkin and Breads, making for easy finding. This is one I just love to pull out when November rolls around.A fantastic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the holidays
I just tried the marbled pumpkin cheesecake at a Halloween party and it was the best tasting mix between pumpkin pie and cheesecake I'd ever had! This book has it all, from simple roasted turkeys to delicious squash casseroles. I can't wait to try more this season!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for the Holidays

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes 1-2-3
Having a great time using this inspiring cookbook. It isn't easy getting wonderful food in this rural area and being able to cook uncomplicated perfectly flavored recipes without doing headstands makes Recipes 1-2-3 a terrific Christmas gift.I particularly like Gold's suggested menus they streamline my entertaining.Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always imaginative, usually simple
Mix together sauerkraut, brown sugar, and crushed tomatoes and what do you get? It sounded so unappealing to me that I skipped over this recipe many times after I bought the book. But in fact, you get quite a delicious soup from those three ingredients. This recipe epitomizes the interesting and imaginative directions Roxanne Gold goes in this book.

Some of the recipes are pretty complex, but most are simple to prepare. That sauerkraut soup couldn't be easier. But be prepared to go shopping. You're unlikely to have all 3 ingredients for these recipes sitting on the shelf.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures, But...
the ingredients used are too exotic.I consider myself to be a pretty good cook, and I like to experiment. It's just that life is too short to get caught up with these recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something New In Cooking-- Really
Gold's approach to cooking is quite unique.By using a limited number of ingredients she must make the plain flavors stand out by emphasizing their inherent qualities. This differs from many culinary styles that strive for complexity of flavors and ranges of tastes within a dish. The results are subtle and fresh tasting.Readers should be warned, however, that 1-2-3 doesn't mean simple. Many times the dishes are time consuming and have multiple steps such as roasting, sweating, blanching, baking, sauteing, and pureeing in order to showcase the flavors of the main ingredient.I have made several dinners using only her cookbook, and three dishes can use up an impressive number of pots, pans, and appliances (fortunately I am not the dishwasher in my home). At their best, the recipes using this simplicity concept are especially suited to wine pairings that enhance or complement the tastes.I have incorporated a number of these dishes into my day to day repertoire:Pasta with Broccoli-Sausage sauce (using vegetarian sausage), Pureed Potatoes, Celeriac Remoulade, Sausages (Vegetarian) with Asparagus Sauce, Pumpkin Pasta, Braised Endive, Baked Fennel, Pasta with Broccoli Sauce, Routabaga Soup, and others.Gold is clearly writing from a large metropolitan center, and those of us in rural areas will have to adapt some of the more exotic ingredients. She is, however, a cook's cook and has in this and subsequent books provided an individual epicurean style.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes created with some hard-to-find ingredients
When I purchased this book I thought, "Wow! I can cut my shopping time in half and still serve excellent gourmet meals to my friends and family!"

While the recipies were creative and pleasing to the eye as well as the palate, I had difficulty finding some of the ingredients. Ms. Gold's philosophy is, the better the ingredients the better the meal. I can't say I disagree. However, it was difficult when almost every time I wanted to make something I had to plan ahead and make either a special trip to the grocery store or ethnicgrocer.com.

What I did like is that the book encouraged me (a novice cook) to think about how different ingredients taste and function together. This is knowledge I can use with all of my other cooking.

Also, I should add that the photography and art design in this book is wonderful! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The author "fudges" a little (details)
This is a fine cooking resource for folks who are both busy and health conscious. As the title implies, there are 200 recipes in all.

If you read the recipes closely, you'll soon discover that the author fibbed just a tad on the "30 minute or less" claim. Taking the recipe on page 136 as an example we find a recipe for "Good Ol' Pork Barbeque" which the author says can be prepared in 15 minutes! I found that one to be a real head-scratcher until I realized that her main ingredient is COOKED pork tenderloin. Well, it takes me 9 hours to properly cook an 8-pound pork butt (I never use tenderloin, not enough flavor) so the fast recipe theme is thus out the window. Even a 1 1/2-pound tenderloin (recommended by the author) would take an hour or so to bake properly in the oven.

Webb's "Speedy Steak" (page 131) calls for similar pre-preparation, one ingredient being 1 1/2-pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts or lean sirloin steaks, cooked and sliced into strips. This recipe purports a 20-minute cooking time but that is clearly not the case if you start from scratch. There are not a lot of recipes like these but the inevitable need to cut up vegetables, pound out chicken filets, etc., clearly call for prep time which does not appear to be a facet of Webb's time formulas.

My other chief comment is that, because these are "healthy" recipes, the most flavorful cuts of meat and the inclusion of low-sodium ingredients tend to combine to knock down the end flavor of many of these dishes. Of course this is to be expected with such recipes but sometimes newer cooks are unaware of this actuality.

Other than those two issues, this is a useful cookbook for the folks which it targets. There are no photos of the dishes but I did not find this to be especially hurtful of the overall work since the detailed instructions are clearly written.

The text is 268 pages in length and the integral recipe chapters are:

-- Appetizers
-- Soups
-- Salads
-- Pasta
-- Rice & Grains
-- Seafood
-- Poultry
-- Lean Beef, Lamb, & Pork
-- Grilled Meats
-- Vegetables
-- Desserts

There are also useful and relevant discusssions on Menus and Food Storage. A nicely-organized index will quickly get you to the recipe which you need to find.

In summary, I would recommend this cookbook for those folks to whom I have previously alluded, as well as to persons who have family members who are afflicted with sugar diabetes.

Product Description
Cooper Gillespie, an extremely intelligent and handsome Welsh springer spaniel, is a dog of discriminating taste and strong opinions. Now Cooper, with the assistance of cookbook author Sally Sampson and the transcription services of his favorite human, Susan Orlean, has put together 50 delectable recipes for snacks, meals, and treats for your canine companion.

Maybe you're cooking everything because your collie has colitis or your Akita has a wheat allergy or your older dog just isn't thriving on commercial kibble. Maybe you're mixing up the occasional biscuit or treat to help your best fur-bearing friend over that I-just-ate-a-tennis- ball-and-don't-feel-so-good episode. Whatever the reason, the recipes in this book (which have been approved by dog trainer and nutritional consultant Stacy Alldredge) will satisfy the most discerning doggie palate. Many of them, in fact, can be shared with a favorite human (though preferably not from the same dish).

Illustrated with more than 50 endearing black-and-white photographs of Cooper and friends by Cami Johnson, and liberally seasoned with stories, quotes, and nutrition tips, Throw Me a Bone makes a dog's dinner something to look forward to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for making special treats or as a coffee table book
I picked up this book because I prefer to make homemade meals for my dog and also appreciated Sally Samson's work on The Figs Table: More Than 100 Recipes for Pizzas, Pastas, Salads, and Desserts with Todd English. When I picked up this book I was not disapointed. It is full of diverse recipes and beautiful pictures of various breeds of dogs.Making it even more endearing is the fact that the preface to each recipe is written from the dog, Cooper's, point of view.It also has very cute lists of dog related bookes and movies at the end.Because of this I think it would be a perfect gift for another who is a hardcore dog lover and has a tendency to pamper their pooch.

That said, the one major flaw in this book is that it is lacking in nutritional information and guidance on how to create a solid diet for your dog.In fairness to the author, the title doesn't necessarily imply this. However, when 'healthy' is part of the title I expect to know what makes each recipe balanced or healthy.Again in fairness to the author she does have a dog trainer and nutrition consultant weigh in on the recipes, but we don't get much detail about what she finds good about the recipes.

Because of this I will be using the cookbook's recipes more as between meal treats or occasional special meals for a special occasion or birthday. If you are looking to the book for this purpose you will be more than satisfied as the book contains everything from Bow-Wow Birthday cake to Pawcakes to Cinnamon Bites. For everyday meals though I am continuing to search for a solid book that gives me more guidance on how I should be balancing my dog's diet to ensure good health.

2-0 out of 5 stars glad I didn't buy
I borrowed this from the library before I bought.Turns out it was a good idea.I only found 3 recipes I would actually make for our dog.too bad... the pictures are super cute.

5-0 out of 5 stars simple and informative
This book is a great addition to my dog food cookbooks. It is simple and includes little info boxes that contain nutritional excerpts. I have other books that go into more detail, but sometimes I just want a quick simple recipe with quick simple nutritional notes. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff to know ..... lots of fun too!
There are lots of books out there in regards to furry-friends ..... of every breed, coloring, personality & size. Stories about/from their lives, and the hopeful forever homes that will eventually awaitfortunate sweethearts. To me, each and every pooch is a honey-pie! I wish it were possible to have a dozen! So, in the end, it's all about the love and care .... how we create great lives for our pets. This fun and funny (laughter on every page!) book, (vibe is different)...... mainly about FOOD & how to prepare it, is a winner!! Good/helpful things to learn, & EVERYTHING to enjoy. Our "wigglebutts" will be HEALTHY-HAPPY CAMPERS!!

PEOPLE EVERYWHERE ..... PLEASE-PLEASE .... ADOPT (YOUR) PETS FROM LOCAL SHELTERS!! DO NOT PURCHASE FROM BREEDERS OR PET STORES. ALSO .... think twice/three times, before letting (!any!) pets have babies. It's most often a no-win situation. People have to realize that pets will beliving their lives around us for 12+ years. Poochies & kitties need daily care .... lots of love that goes with it. THINK with your heart first and foremost. All pets deserve good healthy (cruelty-free) homes to live in. Thanks for listening. Marcia/Chicago, IL

5-0 out of 5 stars Lip Smacking and Tail Wagging!!
Of all the home made treats I have cooked up so far, the recipies from this book actually get my little doggy to do commands before being asked in the hopes of getting a tasty morsel.I packed a kong full of little bits and pieces from a couple different recipies and for the first time my little doggy made 'yummy' noises while he worked to get out the treasures. My doggy is very finicky, and has given two paws up for each batch made- I HIGHLY reccommend these recipies!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What A Book!
First off, this book is visually pleasing. The colors used in this presentation are vibrant, vivid and psychologically pleasing. They make you want to eat ice cream. The photographs here make you wish that the ice cream could magically appear, complete and in a bowl so that you can eat it already!... As I have no knowledge on the technique of ice cream making yet, I have only ever made a few, let me say that the recipes here are delicious. I recently ate ice cream from the store, I will not say which, and was horrified at the taste. It was as if they were cutting corners and to make up for it poured a ton of salt into the mixture. With these home made recipes you get to decide what flavor balance is right for you. And with 52 easy frozen treats to treat yourselves and your relative, and neighbors (yes, them too), you will never!... buy another box from the store. I also promise, as a beginner myself, you do get the hang of making ice cream at home the more you practice. Happy practicing!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Pants Wont Fit, But You Wont Care
Sally Sampson's newest cookbook, Recipe of the Week: Ice Cream, is going to get me into a lot of trouble.Specifically, trouble with buttons not closing, pants not fitting, and no-doubt many a ruined appetite for dinner.Ice cream is my Achilles heel.I walk by the neatly frozen pints in the freezer case with a hangdog expression of thinly concealed lust.I know I shouldn't have it, but everyone has to break the rules sometime and that's where SaIly comes in.

I admire the simplicity of this book on so many levels.Sampson finds no need to wax poetic on the merits of ice cream -- we, as her consumers, know that ice cream is phenomenal on an inherently addictive level so on with the show. And oh what a show it is!All of the frozen treat bases are covered from custard based ice creams to gellatos, sorbets, and granitas. If that isn't enough to peak your interest, how about the thought of one of these tempting flavors waiting for you in a big cold bowl: Graham Cracker Malted Vanilla Ice Cream, Triple Coconut, Molasses Ginger Snap Gelato - do I even need to continue?Sampson also has a number of unusual flavors to peak your curiosity.Have you ever wondered what Balsamic and Black Pepper Gelato might taste like? How about Avocado Gelato?

My first foray into ice cream making was a given. I'm a cookie dough kind of girl.I was also doubly excited to test out my new KitchenAid KICA0WH Ice Cream Maker Attachment and also to have "permission" to make an entire bowl of cookie dough just to snack on.After whipping up my favorite Thick and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie batter I followed Sally's straightforward instructions and watched with excitement as ice cream started to take shape on my counter. To make us all feel slightly better about our new dependency I should point out that the recipes in this book are lower in sugar and fat than most commercially prepared ice creams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mouth-watering color photography illustrates this treasure for ice cream lovers everywhere
Recipe of the Week: Ice Cream is a welcome addition to culinary writer Sally Sampson's "Recipe of the Week" series, featuring fifty-two tasty recipes for fans of frozen delights. From Banana Sorbet (the perfect dish for using up overripe bananas), to Fresh Fig Gelato with Orange and Cinnamon, to Sour Cream Brown Sugar Ice Cream and much more, Recipe of the Week: Ice Cream offers a broad assortment of classic flavors as well as unique original delights. Product Description
Master Recipes is an exciting new approach to the fundamentals of good cooking. Stephen Schmidt offers more than just a collection of wonderful recipes. He lays bare the secrets of how cooking really works. First, he gives you detailed instructions for making basic versions of favourite dishes. Then, in the 'variation recipes' that follow, he shows you how to create endless versions of these kitchen classics simply by making a few changes. In addition to its thousands of master and variation recipes, the book is full of shopping advice, timing instructions, scores of 'rescue' tips for common problems, menu suggestions and guidance for entertaining with ease. Includes over 100 charts, tables and illustrations.Amazon.com Review
In 1987, Stephen Schmidt wrote the first edition of MasterRecipes, a compendium of more than 1,000 recipes for favoriteAmerican dishes. It also included crème brûlée and some othertempting, less American detours. Contributing to the new Joy ofCooking has raised Schmidt's profile, and Master Recipesremains one of the best, most comprehensive teaching cookbooks everwritten. Drawing on his expertise as an instructor, in this secondedition of Master Recipes, Schmidt focuses on providingfundamental culinary knowledge. Each Master Recipe is used toteach the basics that apply to many other, similar recipes. Thus, onceyou can make Old-Fashioned Chicken Stew with Vegetables and CreamGravy, you are equipped to also toss off a curried stew, pot pie, stewwith dumplings, Chicken à la King or Tetrazzini, and New EnglandBoiled Dinner made with cooked beef.

Schmidt writes clearly, usinga very specific format. Every Master Recipe is followed byvariations that refer liberally to it. This involves some flippingback and forth while in the kitchen, but strongly makes the point ofsimilarity among families of dishes. Sketches illustrate the keytechniques and processes.

In this updated version of MasterRecipes, Schmidt lowers recommended cooking temperatures for vealand pork, accommodating current preferences while remaining withinsafety limits. The muffin recipes are lightened, crème brûlée is madericher, and gingerbread made more tender than in the original edition. He also uses a food processor for making the chocolate glaze to use oncakes and as a wickedly intense sauce. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have cookbook
Stephen Schmidt's book, Master Recipes, is just that ... a master.

His recipes are clear, readable, and most importantly, doable.I especially love the multiple variations offered along the way.

This is my second copy as I wanted my son, the chef, to have this classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great all-around cookbook with vast scope
Of the dozens of cookbooks I use, this is the one that I continually return to, after owning it for over 10 years. Its recipes extend to all aspects of the meal, from salads and soup to wonderful desserts, and cover many different techniques. Its real strength is in the approach: solid, well-tested, basic master recipes are presented, followed by a range of variations to them.We end up knowing how, for example, to prepare 32 kinds of cream soup, and a dozen kinds of quiche. The author alerts the cook to pitfalls and how to avoid them, as well as giving advise on how to rescue the situation when things go wrong. For cooks at all levels. My favorite cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book for Beginner or Advanced Cooks
Cooking has been my hobby since I was 8-years old.I own (and use) over 35 different cookbooks, all of which are specialty books by cuisine or food category.A compulsive recipe clipper, I really needed a basic cookbook for times when recipes seemed incorrect (especially those from the LosAngeles Times Food Section!).This is it.Clear, concise and wellorganized.A beginner could teach herself how to cook using just thisbook, yet an advanced chef would find it helpful when brushing up on"rusty" techniques or trying something new to him/her.

It'sup-to-date but not one of those horrid "take one box of cake mix"type of books.Loads of practical info -- I especially like the weight& measurement conversion charts inside the front and back covers, whichcome in handy when you're doubling or splitting a recipe or translatingforeign measurements.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Longtime Kitchen Companion
As a long time cook, I discovered this book about five years ago.Now I use the master recipes for almost everything I make. The recipes are well explained, the procedures tried and true and they all work wonderfully.Having experimented with many souffle recipes over the years, I tried themaster recipe contained here.It produces a consistently perfect souffle -the only one I use.

I have learned many techniques from this book andwith a bookshelf full of recipe books - this is the first one I reach forreference.

5-0 out of 5 stars a well-kept secret in the world of cooking
I have not found this book's contemporary equal in clarity, authenticity, practicality and simplicity. The author's research and testing of hisrecipes is meticulous, and the master recipe format (which has been widelycopied since the first publication of this book) is an excellent teachingtool -- one can acquire delicious skills just cooking one's way throughMaster Recipes. Here is the best angel food cake recipe I've found outsideof my grandmother's kitchen. Mr. Schmidt taught me how to make cremecaramel, and if I need to review how to make a perfectly hard-boiled egg, Ican find that here, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better star chef/restaurant cookbooks
A lot of these star chef with brilliant restaurant cookbooks fall flat when you actually try to cook, at home, from them. This one is a success though. Clear recipes with good cooking instructions and ideas dominate the book. The organization is clear. The photography is both helpful and enticing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic meals
This is one of the best cookbooks I own.I have often dined at Le Bec Fin and there is simply no comparison in Philadelphia. As far as the cookbook, I routinely prepare the Poached Turkey recipe (always to raving reviews), the Scalloped Potato recipe and the Lobster Bisque recipe for holiday dinners. The Lobster bisque is absolutely fantastic and the best I have ever tasted and it came from my very own kitchen.Tres bien!!

Over the years, I have made many of the recipes and, even though they can be somewhat complicated sometimes, the results are just superior. This is truly a special cookbook.I own at least 75 other cookbooks and this is one of my favorites that I go back to year-after-year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated French Cooking
This is food for classy entertaining. If you can be bothered, which you should, the recipes are quite complex and time-consuming, but well within the scope of the keen home cook. And will they ever impress your guests!

5-0 out of 5 stars My wifes favorite cookbook
We bought this cook book as one of 4 cookbooks recommended, a couple of years ago, by the Montreal Gazette,a newspaper, here in Quebec, Canada. So I bought all four cook books for my wife.Of the four cookbooks listed in the newspaper, the 400 Best Comfort Food is by far the preferred one. My wife likes the cookbook because it has simple, easily made dishes that are delicious and healthy. We both work, so the recipies have to be practical. We have bought this cookbook as a gift for family and friends. This latest purchase was also for a gift. My wife has many cookbooks; this one is used quite often. We shy away from rich foods and/or recipies that will make you sick and/or bring heart & stroke issues. So this book, along with recipes from Cooking Light, wins the day for us!!

Fresh ingredients in easy to follow recipes wrapped within a cool selection of occasions and recipe titles make for fun preparation and entertaining.

I am so impressed with this cookbook! I have Marguerite's other two books (which I love), but this one tops them all. I simply follow Marguerite's recipes and present the food as I've learned from her. She also writes recipes that are practical for anyone to do. This is a beautiful book written from the heart and her love of food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and Simple Recipes
This is a great collection of favorite receipes. The best thing about this book is you have the ingredients on hand. I hate it when I have to buy something exotic that I won't use in another 10 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker's Best loved Receipes
The book arrived on time and was in excellent condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basic content enhanced by personal stories
I received this book as a gift this past Christmas. It is a collection of classic Betty Crocker recipes and some original creations. It is a compilation of mostly 'ole stand-by recipes that you would want to prepare for your family. Great for cupboard cooking...most of what you need to prepare the dishes you can find in your cupboard on any given night of the week.

This cookbook is NOT a "how-to" guide to cooking, nor was it intended to be.It is a sentimental look at how women's lives have evolved around and in their kitchens. What makes this book so invitng is that each recipe features a different "Betty Crocker" woman behind the cooking of each dish. There are also some interesting facts about Betty Crocker included throughout the text.

I would recommend this book as a gift to a seasoned cook who would appreciate the glimpses into some other women's lives. However, I definitely think that there are other titles that would offer more diverse recipes and new culinary ideas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy!
The stories which accompany the recipes are a nice touch and interesting to read. However, I have yet to try a recipe in this book that actually tasted decent. This book is for someone who wants to cook quick and easy meals not someone who is interested in quality and taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Delicious
Published in 1998, this book features >200 classic Betty Crocker recipes accompanied by full color photos. The book features the winning recipes of 75 Betty Crocker contestants and their stories.

I found a lot of the recipes easy to make and with ingredients that were readily available.Featured Chapters include:
1. Breakfast
2. Lunch- soup, salads and sandwiches
3. Dinner- beef, chicken, fish and vegetarian meals
4. Sides/Breads
5. Desserts

The book also featured an introduction on the development of food icon Betty Crocker- from 1921 to present day.The real purpose of the book was to highlight the 75 women across America who developed their own recipes. My favorite recipes incude:
1. Strawberry muffins- delicious with a great strussel topping and suprisingly easy to make
2. Orange Currant Scones- i made this with dried cranberries instead of the harder to find currants
3. Popovers- rich and buttery ... Read more
