5-0 out of 5 stars reading comprehension success in 20 minutes a day
This book is really great because i have been out of school for a while and this book helps me brush up on my reading comprehension.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compact and to the point!
I am an education college major, and a literacy tutor for school age children for 2 years now. I borrowed this text from my local library because I am tutoring my first high schooler this school year--no time to "re-invent the wheel" and Dr. Suess is NOT an option! (lol) It comes with a pre & post test section, and additional online resouces/assistance--for a fee! The wookbook style is concise and effective and compact! My tutee is progressing quite nicely through the exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT IS REALLY A GREAT BOOK
If you read and can't understand what you just read, but you have to read several times, this is the book for you. This book will help you to break down the paragraphs in a way to understand so you read with a purpose. It also helps you to focus better on what you are doing since you have work to do, to obtain the jewel of understanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars High school level
Not expert level.
May be high school level. I am not about sure about American schooling but I think my guess is right about the level of the students who should be using this book.
I was looking for GMAT or MCAT entrance level reading comprehension and I found one by ARCO to be very good. Product link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0028632494

5-0 out of 5 stars clear, concise, effective lessons

4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed reading these passages with my son.
An interesting reading passages , made it fun for my son to read. The activities that followed these passages has efficiently helped me evaluate my son's reading and comprehension skills. The book would've helped my son more if the passages were more challenging in both vocabulary and structure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spec Needs book
This was very informative for my Spec Needs classroom. Thank you. It came quickly and in excellent shape!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad. But not great either.
The author said that this book wass designed for 4th graders with reading problems. My kid had no reading problem and was about to enter 3 grade. I thought this book might be of the right level. But I was wrong. This book may be good for 2nd graders.
But if the level is good for your kid, the book itself is not bad. The articles are interesting. But still, I think "wordly wise 3000" is a better choice. The "wordly wise 3000 book A" is about the same level.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource with some disappointing elements
I am surprised other reviewers have not mentioned inaccuracies and errors in this book. For example, in the first story Mary Rose refers to the Arawak Indians as both the Arawak and the Arawaks.I consider this a big error considering the passage is only a few paragraphs long. The second story on the Pilgrims contains inaccuracies and many of the points she chooses do not support her thesis that parents are strict.Requiring children to stand at the dinner table is an example of parental strictness.Other examples were not at all related to strictness but instead to conditions of poverty.

The text is also fraught with typographical errors, some of which could be very confusing to a beginning reader.E.g. :"Then he returned home and happily at his dinner" (p. 32).Obviously this should read "ate" his dinner.

Additionally, many stories are overpunctuated. Some stories even have a double exclamation point in the title (e.g. Bananas!!).

Slang (improperly used at that) is another troubling element... a story on astronauts' water sources warns "Don't gross out!"

There are some inaccurate explanations.Rose's explanation of the use of italics is misleading. She italicizes words of foreign origin the first story. This use is correct, but her explanation of the use of italics does not correspond to the way she uses it.

There are positive aspects to this book, however. It clearly states the objectives for each section and has good questions to go with the passages.I also appreciated how the author related the content of the book to standardized assessments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Resource for Teaching Reading I've Found...
I absolutely love this book for both teachers or parents looking to improve reading skills. My daughter first came home with these stories from her 4th grade teacher and I loved them so much I bought a copy to use with the students I tutor. Now I'm teaching basic skills to fifth graders and do these stories one-on-one.Each story is intelligently written with a touch of humor and jam-packed with interesting facts.Topics include American History ("Thomas Jefferson and the Big Cheese"), fiction, biography, poetry, science (Star Trek!"), and popular culture. There is one reading skill to work on per story such as using context clues, italics, or main idea/supporting details.I've just ordered Mary Rose's other similar books for math and other reading levels. One word of caution:the vocabulary may be too advanced for a struggling third grader--best for grades 4-6 unless the child is already a fluent reader. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best available
It's not perfect, but it's the best available book to help with Reading Comprehension for prospective LSAT takers.

Much of this material is the same as you will get in the $1,000+ face to face course. As long as you have the self motivation to study hard, this book will pay for itself in a few weeks.

Still, this is the weakest of the three bibles - after all, it's not going to teach you how to read and comprehend 220 words of really dense text in under four minutes. Instead it will teach you how to focus your reading so you get the most useful information as quickly as possible.

Before buying this book, you'll probably also want the Logical Reasoning and Logic Games bibles and a good selection of past tests to complete your study materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerscore Reading Comprehension Bible
This product is amazing! It was shipped extremely rapidly in mint condition. A really great resource for those who want to master the LSAT. Reading Comprehension is my most difficult subject and this books helps you from A-Z with understanding the concepts. I would really recommend using Powerscore for this section of the LSAT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from the GMAT perspecitve
There is actually quite a bit of overlap between LSAT and GMAT Verbal section. LSAT of course is harder and more hardcore, which makes it a great source of extra hard (sometimes way too hard) questions. In additionm, GMAC, unlike LSAC does not post/license official questions, and thus LSAT materials become very attractive for GMAT test takers who have exhausted traditional books or are looking for an extra challenge. I appologize to the LSAT takers for tainting this review but I think it will be helpful to many GMAT test takers who are looking to get a higher verbal score.

Pros:
1. Difficulty - Passages are longer and more complex than their GMAT counterparts. At times, questions can be quite difficult and convoluted.
2. Practice - There are about 100 real LSAT RC questions. There are also some exercises developed by Powerscore in the beginning of the book.
3. Discussion - The book does an excellent job at explaining RC and discussing strategies and technique.
4. Product Quality - Although a minor issue, the pages and book cover are of good quality.

Cons:
1. *** WARNING: Intended Use - This book is an LSAT guide. Obviously, there will be some irrelevant topics covered. Reading some sections might actually do harm.
2. Price - At 38 dollars, not cheap cheap.
3. Size - The book is 360 pages long. Granted, a considerable portion of the book should be skipped, but this is a serious investment in time for most people.
4. Style - The book's content is extremely dense! Some days, ten pages felt like an eternity. I swear, sometimes this book emits sleeping gas. I literally fell asleep once or twice while reading. And this is coming from a person who thinks Powerscore CR is a smooth and enjoyable read!

Overall Assessment:
After reading this book, you could expect to be a much more active and aggressive reader. The book will help anticipate shifts in a passage, as well as identify a potential question source. But a 360-page book is asking an awful lot from people who need to invest their limited time and money in other GMAT areas. But if you are particularly weak in RC, and MGMAT RC or Veritas RC books don't cut it for you (and you have extra time), then this is a very powerful guide.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this book - I reply to comments.
Best Regards,
BB, GMAT 750.

3-0 out of 5 stars Got extra cash..need help with RC? this is for you
I am a BIG fan of power score products. I utilized this series for GMAT and now for LSAT and each time I saw results. I am fortunate to have a small budget to purchase these basic prep books and followed a stringent 3 month self study plan (I didn't have 1500 to spend on a professional prep program) and I did well on the test. It takes focus , discipline and great prep books, such as POWER SCORE!

Ok I love Power score can you tell?! BUT this is my least fav in the LSAT series but it is still a great book. I just believe that RC is well the easier of the sections to study for that is why I am "iffy" about the need for this book. I worked my way through the entire book and I did walk away with some decent knowledge but honestly I only applied about 1/3 of it on the test simply because of time. I just found their approach to be really time consuming however I also tend to be a fast reader so the thought of doing the breakdown they suggest was just overwhelming for me. I will say this, if this is a section you are struggling with buy the book but if you are a-ok put your pennies toward more lsac preptest's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unnecessary
I am a huge fan of his other two LSAT prep books, but I found the reading comprehension book to be slightly unnecessary. It was basic, intuitive information. I did find the "common errors" section helpful, seeing as I am now more aware of traps. I basically found out from this book that completing each prompt in 8 minutes and 45 seconds (their recommendation) to be extremely doable, without using any of their tips. A good book to skim, but not worth spending precious study time over. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When you need a little extra help
I got this book to help my son with reading comprehension over the summer. He finished it in a few weeks and it was relatively pain free. He's not interested in reading comprehension, but it wasn't so difficult that he was turned off, but it was challenging enough that he wasn't bored.

What was helpful was the way they broke it down and asked questions that he had to think about. It also helped to make him feel successful in reading. The answers are in the back, so make sure you remove and put in a special place only you know about. We corrected his together and that was pretty fun to go over the answers and ask why he chose the ones he did.

I'll use this series again next summer to keep his brain stimulated and active.

4-0 out of 5 stars standard reading practice book
I was looking for a reading comprehension workbook to prepare my third grader for Beestar online reading assessment. This book provides fairly short paragraphs composed at grade 2-3 level. The topics are very kids friendly. It is perfect for your child to practice and get ready forstate standard tests. We don't see any challenging words in the text, so your third grader should proceed lesson by lesson without difficulty. The book contains colorful pictures that attract children's attention. My child's Beestar assessment test was slightly harder than this book. But the concepts and skills are the same. Overall it's a fair book serving the purpose.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's just what we wanted!
We were looking for a book that would provide practice specifically in reading comprehension skills, for a child in second grade who is reading above grade level in most other respects (vocabulary, etc.). This book suits that need very well.

We wanted our young student to have some short reading assignments, and to develop the discipline of answering questions *only using information from the text* -- as opposed to answering from personal experience, or guessing, etc. It's not really the same thing as being "smart" and it's not the same thing as understanding the vocabulary. I was glad to see that this book does indeed offer plenty of practice in that skill area, as well as various other activities, as described in the product listing.

Another reviewer here has observed that the book does not appear to be truly geared for third grade, despite its title. My guess is that it probably is indeed geared for *some* third graders, considering that kids in this age range have widely-varying skill levels.

Still, I'd tend to agree with that reviewer, because our second-grader's teacher had used a few of the pages from this book (or one like it) for homework assignments! I mean, word-for-word, they were the same pages, and these are just regular kids in second grade. Presumably most of them were able to do the homework, but I can't vouch for it.

I also haven't had a chance to find out if the teacher was using this same book, or another one from the same publisher, or what. It would not surprise me if an educational publisher reprints the same thing in different products, geared toward supposedly different markets.

The contents are not great literature, and I have small quibbles with the quality and precision of a few things here and there. But overall I'm happy with the purchase. I wouldn't want to rely on it for a child's entire education, but I don't think that's its purpose. It is a useful tool for extra enrichment for kids somewhere in this general age range (6 at the very lowest to 9 at the highest, I'd guess).

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
I was looking for a good reader's comprehension book to use on my third grader. This book is very short (4 to 5 sentences) paragraphs followed by 3 questions.I was looking for something a little longer. The topics in the book are fairly kid friendly and if you are just looking for something for you child to practice on for test taking purposes, I guess it's okay. The vocabulary is very simple (more like 1st or maybe 2nd grade) so there is nothing that your 3rd grader won't understand.Graphics are good and colorful, although they are mostly just covering blank parts of the page and not adding to the stories they illistrate. Just didn't seem like a 3rd grade leve.I'm going to use it for my 2nd grader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful workbook
Another great Scholastic reading comprehension book.My son completed this one first this summer before moving on to the third grade reading comprehansion book.Since this is something that is difficult for him, these workbooks really help him break it down. This workbook was the extra help he needed to really get the material.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much reading comprehension
My child is a fluent reader, but has problem processing what he reads. I thought this book would help him. The book has many very easy tasks that have little to do with actual reading comprehension: sequence a set of 4 pictures, general question not about the story. Some exercises a good, but mostly this book is not for fluent readers who need help with comprehension.

5-0 out of 5 stars great workbook
This is a wonderful workbook. The stories are cute and often funny, and the questions are often in the form of a game, riddle or joke. My son HATES to do work but actually enjoys these workbooks. The work is challenging enough to be interesting (which many of these type of workbooks are not)and also smart and varied,it's not the same type of question rephrased for the next exercise. When my twin girls are old enough I hope to buy it for them too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for
This workbook was exactly what I was looking for. My son was having problems with Reading Comprehension and this workbook was perfect. We've seen results already.

Product Description

Inferring, questioning, determining importance. It's not easy to explain these abstract reading strategies to elementary readers, yet knowing how they work and how to use them is an important first step to connecting with texts. Fortunately Tanny McGregor has developed visual, tangible, everyday lessons that make abstract thinking concrete and that can help every child in your classroom make more effective use of reading comprehension strategies.

Comprehension Connections is a guide to developing children's ability to fully understand texts by making the comprehension process achievable, accessible, and incremental. McGregor's approach sequences stages of learning for each strategy that take students from a fun object lesson to a nuanced and lasting understanding. Her lessons build bridges between the concrete and the abstract by incorporating writing, discussion, song, art, and movement into a web of creative connections that reinforce each strategy on a variety of levels. All the while Comprehension Connections offers an inside look at the dynamic of McGregor's teaching, showing you how her ideas look in action, and including the language she uses and that she encourages her students to use as they build their facility with:
  • schema
  • inferring
  • questioning
  • determining importance
  • visualizing
  • synthesizing.
Many students struggle to understand what it is they are supposed to do as they learn to read strategically. Help them make connections to the ideas behind reading and watch as your readers go deeper into texts than ever before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, wish there was more.
This book is great.I just wish there was more examples.I feel like I needed a few more pages in each chapter so I could figure it out a little better.I do own "Strategies that Work" by Harvey which she refers to often in this book, and once I get through reading that, I'm sure I'll know. This book has wonderful examples of each strategy for reading comprehension. You can use these methods for pretty much any subject where comprehension is involved.McGregor uses lots of visuals in her classroom and since I homeschool, I'm not sure if I could hang as many posters as she does, but she gave some great examples. I also like that she has books listed at the end of each chapter for further reading.

I have recommended this book to most of my homeschool friends. It's wonderful and helped me view comprehension and how kids can learn it in a very different light.Buy this book and also be sure to get Strategies that Work as well! The two go great together.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!!
This book was recommended to me at a recent TEPSA conference in Austin, TX, by a school district that has seen great results with it.If you are looking for a fool-proof way to build the comprehension skills of your students, then this book is for you.It will ultimately revolutionize your approach in teaching reading comprehension. It is a quick-read that provides you with guaranteed strategies to implement in your classroom instantly. This book is worth every penny!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!!!
This is an awesome book for concrete examples of abtract thinking. My students were having a difficult time when I decided to purchase this book. I have used a few of the lessons from the book and it has made a huge improment in my student's understanding of comprehension strategies. GET THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource, every teacher would benefit
This book is a wonderful resource for teaching comprehension strategies.I love how the author gives you concrete examples of thereading strategies so that you can model with your students and "anchor" their learning.I think this book is a must have for all teacherswho do "think alouds" to model reading strategies. It is well worth the money.I refer to it again and again!!

5-0 out of 5 stars All I can say is....wow!
This book is just...... wow.I feel like it should be way more known in the teacher crowd than it is. Every elementary teacher should have this book.I kept reading chapter after chapter getting more and more excited, thinking-- this is what I've been looking for all along!Tanny takes each "big idea" comprehension strategy-- matacognition, schema, etc.and gives you a handful of perfect lessons to teach it.When I say perfect, I mean PERFECT. They are so engaging and cute, yet drive the idea home so no student will ever forget it.The lessons all start with something concrete, like paint color samples, salad bowls, a lint roller. These props are the things that make the lessons stick in kids' minds, yet they are the things that I am never creative enough to come up with on my own. After the idea is introduced with this concrete object, students explore it with wordless picture books and then move on to texts.I can't remember the last time I've been so excited about a teachingbook. It definitely goes in my top 3 teaching books ever. I used these stories once-a-week for read-alouds.The students listened intently to these interesting stories for details as they looked forward to writing their own ending. Whether they worked in small group, pairs, or individually, they enjoyed sharing their predictions and eagerly anticipated the "true" ending from the story. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
I have been able to use the beginning stories for my struggling first graders, and the stories towards the end of the book are great for my struggling second graders. Being able to incorporate comprehension is an added bonus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Level appropriate
Looking over the comprehension books, I felt the reading passages were grade level appropriate. Sometimes it will be listed as 2nd or 1st and be too difficult or easy. These would have pleased Goldilocks.

5-0 out of 5 stars great idea to involve parents and improve reading skills
This has been a great resource to me as a First Grade Teacher. The book is mostly ready to copy printables. Each week, you make photocopies for the students of the two pages of homework. One page is a short story with illustrations, and the other page has questions or a quick activity, along with a note to parents.I have found these to be very helpful in building comprehension and fluency skills.I also think that it has been good for the parents of my students because they have more direction, as far as what they can do to help their child read. Each assignment focuses on a different skill (cause and effect, punctuation, sequence of events, etc.), and the parent note really helps to inform and guide parents through the homework as they help their child.I also like that the homework is due at the end of the week, so parents can pick which night is more convenient to help their child with the homework.
Overall I am very pleased with this resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
This book is a great resource for scientifically sound strategies for teaching reading. It is chock full of good chapters and an excellent resource for graphic organizers. The strategies and organizers have been ramped up to be relevant for teenage learners and teachers who expect students to arrive in their high school classrooms already knowing how to read, but who still need some direct instruction and specific strategies for being successful in school. THis resource would be helpful for typical, special ed, esl, all learners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for upper grades
This is a great book for teachers instructing the lower grade levels or ELL classes.Very easy assignments that are great for practicing foundation skills; by grade 11 & 12 the foundation should be solidly in place, making this paper too low of an expectation for students from teachers at this grade level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips on teaching
Mr. Zwiers has come up with some great reading activities for the classroom. They are easy to understand and modify. It is a great resource for teachers looking for ways to reach their students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Comp Made Easy

My daughter worked on this book over this summer. She states she feels very confident in her reading comprehension skills as she enters 8th grade.
Thank you for supplying parents with these books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read a 8th grade book instead!
This is a small workbook and it has short reading passages.Your average 8th grader should be reading longer passages and studying more complex literature. However, I do see how this workbook as a supplemental activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good skill builder for the SOLs
We homeschool, so good workbooks are a major part of our curricula.I definitely have seen my share of workbooks written well and those that I find confusing and contradictory of the way we teach. This workbook is easy to understand and in an easy format that keeps my child's interest. We will be getting others from the same publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great accompaniment to recent tests for Reading Comprehension practice.
While this book is not sufficient to ensure success on the reading comprehension section, I use it regularly as an LSAT tutor with my students. Many students particularly dislike the passages about art or literature, and this book's categorization of passages by subject matter helps students to get over the psychological barrier associated with a given type of passage. It is true that the more recent tests have comparative reading passages that were not present in tests 1-20, but students would be wise to use the more recent tests for full-length test practice. This book is ideal for supplementary practice, or for practice on improving speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grouped by Passage Type is Better Than Kaplan LSAT Mastery Practice
In a few days, I will post a more detailed review of this book on my LSAT blog. However, I just wanted to briefly note that this book is much better than the previous alternative, Kaplan LSAT Mastery Practice.

Grouped by Passage Type contains every LSAT Reading Comprehension passage from PrepTests 1-20, so it includes some Reading Comp passages that are otherwise out-of-print and difficult to find in book form. It organizes Reading Comp passages according to various categories, but it also goes beyond the traditional Natural Science, Social Science Humanities, and Law categories.

For example, it divides Humanities passages into the categories of Art, Literature, and Music & Poetry.

The Kaplan Mastery book just sticks with the 4 basic categories and doesn't do a more detailed breakdown, which would allow you to focus on specific areas. (The Mastery Practice book also just includes a random assortment of passages.)

This book is definitely worth getting if you plan to go through Reading Comp passages in PrepTests 1-20.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste
Let me preface this by saying that I have not, and will not be purchasing this book, because it is a waste of money. This book will sell you the RC from tests 1-20. The Lsat is currently around test 60, and the Reading Comprehension has dramatically changed since around test 40. They now how comparative reading sections and the sections are generally much harder than they were before. If you buy this book you will fool yourself into thinking that you're prepared for the reading comprehension section when you will not be. Do yourself a favor and go out and buy the actual recent tests here on Amazon. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but not the most interesting read
I appreciate all the information provided are research based, and for the most part are practical. The book nevertheless reads like a manual, and doesn't seem to offer much suggestions on how to make the teaching more fun and palatable for students with learning difficulties. More real-life examples would be good, as they will illustrate clearer how the tools can be applied. Definitely worth reading, but on the whole quite dull text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maestra
Excellent resource tool for special education professionals and reading specialists.Provides strategies to use with learning disabled students that are easy to implement in the classroom. These strategies also work well with general education students who are below grade level in reading skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teachers
"Teaching Reading Comprehension" may be a rather stale title for a book on one of the most important (and, arguably, well-studied) components of education, but the content is highly enlightening and refreshing for those concerned with improving instructional practices with students with learning disabilities, as well as all other students.

Many highly effective, practical, and research-based ideas for teaching reading are provided in this well-organized book. A considerable amount of useful information will provide all teachers with many fresh ideas for enhancing their literacy program. My one criticism is that there are several (rather small, almost silly) errors that were missed by the publishers that appear to be the result of poor editing. Just the same, those errors do not subtract from the content and should (hopefully) be corrected in future editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Resource Teachers!
I'm usually pretty skeptical about new books for teaching. This book contains practical lessons that are easy to use in the classroom. I've already recommended it to several of the Language Arts teachers that I work with. These strategies are good for students with LD as well as all students in the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Needed
There are many books, but few are geared to the practical, everyday processes of reacing out to a child with a disability. This book does that.Everything is step by step, and easy to carry out. I have been a SPED teacher for over 33 years. You can never, ever learn enough.
