3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of rivers but only general info
Don't buy this book thinking you won't need another resource to run a particular river. It offers only a taste into each of these rivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspired Book
This is a surprizingly good book.It not only renders a service to river runners but more im portantly it is an inspired attempt to be of service to the rivers themselves. Besides the useful technical imformation on the howand where of kayaking and boating it is full of interesting and poeticdetails about the character of the regions through which the rivers flow. I have used it in teaching geography to children and adults. As an activeConservationist and teacher I believe this book deserves a spot on many areference shelf in many a library and bookcase. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource .... fun read also !
This book is an excellent resource, whether you are an experienced or first time trip leader of a multi-day river trip.

I've been an active trip leader since 1997 .... from weekend trips within a few hours drive from home .... to month long trips deep into wilderness. I purchased this book in 2004 and have found it an indispensible reference. This book provides a very methodical way to plan, organize, and pack for a trip (includes check lists etc) .... I find that using this book means I use my pre-trip time more efficiently and I worry less about whether or not I've fogotten or overlooked something !!So it is worth every cent:-)

Maria Eschen presents what sounds like a dry subject in a very amusing way. The approach she documents for planning a trip is also applicable to many types of group multi-day wilderness trips (e.g. climbing, mountaineering, ski touring) though obviously the river and equipment specific info is not applicable! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Humerous Stories About BIG Rivers
If anyone can make a white-knuckled ride through a Class V rapid sound like a humerous adventure, it is Jeff Bennett.Drawing from trips down the classic hairball runs in North America, Bennett uses his great storytelling skill to get the reader laughing and enjoying these extreme adventures.Anyone who has guided, kayaked, or simply clung on for dear life on these rivers can relive the experience from a more "lighthearted" frame of reference.Part two of the book gives the reader more logistical information on flow levels, put ins, and take outs.Highly recommended for those interested in exploring the outer limits of navigable rivers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Classic Guide to BC Paddling
While this book is now somewhat dated (published in 1986) and out of print, it still remains the classic guide to whitewater paddling opportunities in Southwestern British Columbia. This book does not describe the dozens of "new-school" runs that have been discovered over the last decade and some of the drops mentioned as unrunnable are now routinely paddled. For that reason, this book is no longer considered comprehensive and you won't find any mention of well-known runs such as the Stein, Ashlu Creek, Homathko, or the dozens of other world-class creek runs in the Whistler area and Fraser Valley. This book is however a comprehensive guide to the classic runs that were originally pioneered in long fiberglass boats. It's long past time for a new guidebook to take this one's place but for nearly two decades this has been the best available. The rivers described are all great runs that are still enjoyed today.

Consider this book a starting place to explore the wonderful rivers of BC. For intermediate paddlers or anyone looking for fun play runs this book likely covers most of the rivers you'll be interested in. If you are a creek boater on a road trip to experience the best BC has to offer you won't find much in this guide. The guide covers 38 different runs along with the world-famous tidal rapid at Skookumchuck. These include runs on the following rivers: Capilano, Seymour, Coquitlam, Kanaka, Elaho-Squamish, Cheakamus, Birkenhead, Lillooet, Chilliwack, Chehalis, Cogburn, Big Creek, Silver Creek, Coquihalla, Similkameen, Tulameen, Mission Creek, Shuswap, Seymour, Adams, Clearwater, North Barriere, Bridge, Cayoosh Creek, Nicola, Thompson, Nahatlatch. While the book is old, the river maps are excellent and as long as you can calibrate your frame of reference appropriately the guide will give you a good idea of what each river is like. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I colllect thse books while searching out good quiet water paddle experiences...this one is worktht he purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oddly Organized by Location
I found that this book lacked organization by geographical region of Oregon. It has a good sized map of Oregon in the front with the various trips represented as a dot with a number in it. There are no city or county indications on the map. If you wanted to look for trips in Bend, you'd be guessing what trips are there. There are regional maps in the back, but I don't think there is an index into them. You just have to hunt around. I was thinking of kayaking in Bend on the stretch of the Deschutes from Wiki Up reservoir to Bend, the first easy section, which stops at the falls about 8 miles downstream. It shows the stretch on one map as easy but no mention is made of how to get there or what to expect.

It has a rather large index to its credit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Oregon Boating Reference Book
Paddling Oregon -along with Soggy Sneakers- are the two definative guide books about Oregon boating.

Paddling Oregon has a well-organized desciption of multiple runs of 92 different rivers. Included in eachoverview is information about the character, location, gradient, class andskill level and a list of appropriate craft for the run. Information aboutpotential shuttle sources is also included.

Paddling Oregon is acomfortable format and easy-to-read narrative which provides great detailsand provides a good feel for the river.

The one criticism I have is thebook fails to provide useful maps for use on the river. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book At A Super Price
Fast read, chock full of good information about river features, navigation, hazards, and safety based on actual accident reports.I am taking the author's advice though and signed up for a river navigation and safety course from a local certified whitewater instructor/guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains the most common hazards confronting canoeists
River Safety: A Floater's Guide examines actual floating accidents, then moves on to identify and explain the most common hazards confronting canoeists. Author Stan Bradshaw draws upon more than twenty-five years of experience and eleven years of teaching canoeing safety to show how the vast majority of fatal river accidents are easily avoidable if canoeists follow a few basic, simple rules. From "reading the water" and identifying river hazards, to basic principals and techniques of river navigation, to fundamentals of river rescue and a thorough discussion of clothing and equipment, River Safety is highly recommended reading. Enhanced with equipment and first aid kit check lists, a section on important knots for river runners, and an extensive directory of river running courses offered throughout North American, River Safety is a "must" for the novice canoeist and has much of significant value for even the seasoned river floater.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small investment for a lifetime of reward
I'm an open ocean paddler and thought I could handle an upcoming rivertrip without any fuss; but this book brings to light in an easy to readformat the great need that even the most experienced of paddler has toproperly prepare for the calmest of water journeys on the best of days. I'mvery greatful for the river reading techniqes Bradshaw discribes and forthe true stories of people who lost their lives because they weren'tprepared. With so many people getting out on the water these days, bookslike this are essential and will save many lives. ... Read more
