Say you're curious about the Bible's stance on alcohol. Allyou need to do open to page 41 of Stephen J. Lang's BiblicalQuotations for All Occasions, where you'll find Proverbs 23:20-21,which says, "Be not among wine guzzlers, nor among gluttonous eatersof food. For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, andlaziness shall clothe a man with rags." Or Proverbs 31:6-7: "Givestrong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine to those thatare of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, andremember his misery no more," arming you with the appropriate Gospelfor whichever side of the argument you wish to espouse.

The book includes quotations for various occasions--"Anniversaries" to"Weddings"--and quotations by subject, organized alphabetically from"Abuse" and "Adultery" to "Work," "Worldly Pleasures," and "Worry." Each category mentions others that are related, so "Conflict" refersyou to "Fellowship with Other Believers," "Hate," and "Peace." I Peter5:8 advises: "Be self-controlled, be vigilant; because your adversarythe devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he maydevour," but self-control isn't so easy with Lang's BiblicalQuotations nearby. --Stephanie Gold ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Darn Good Reference Book for Writers and Speakers
This book is arranged by topic, which makes it great for quick reference. If you want a quote on "marriage" or "children" or "success" or just about anything, it is easy to find. One thing I didn't like about it (at first) is that it appeared to be "sort of" like the King James Version, but not quite. In fact, it appears the editor has used the KJV but modernized it slightly--that is, he left the quotes as close as possible to the KJV, but changed a word here and there to make the meaning clear.I think that was a wise choice, as sometimes the KJV is just not clear enough.Anyway, I do use this book often and I have a feeling I may eventually wear the cover out from frequent use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just about every Bible quote you could hope to use!
This book is packed with quotes! The only downside is the author re-wrote them to modernize them, so they are in neither King James version nor New International version nor any other text. I look up a lot of them to see their original wording, which is a good way to learn the quotes anyway. Great way to learn the Bible and use it in everyday life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top of the Line for Usefulness
I got this book for Christmas and have enjoyed just browsing through it, though I expect it to be useful as a reference book as well.I think the author (or maybe the publisher) did a neat job of updating the King James Version so that the quotes sound poetic but are still easy to understand.(They did away with all the words like 'thee' and 'thou' and so on.)I have recommended this to people in my church because I think its topical arrangement makes it easy to find what you're looking for in practically any subject area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something New for My Reference Library
I found this to be a very useful desk reference book, also interesting just for leafing through when I have some down time at my job.I had not realized before that so many familiar quotes and phrases come from the Bible. The book is organized by topics in alphabetical order, making it easy to look things up.There is also a very handy index. It is not in hardback but has that kind of 'sturdy paperback' binding, so should hold up well after a lot of use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book!
This has been useful to me for magazine writing. I also do some speaking at my women's group, and this is a great source of quotes. It is organized by topics, so it makes it easy to locate just the right quote for what you need. One interesting difference between this and other quotation books is that the author has used the King James Version of the Bible but has carefully modernized some of the difficult "antique" words from the old version.I think that helps a lot, because in places the King James could be hard to understand. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Scholarly Collection of Religious Quotations
This is one of three books of religious quotations I keep handy for preparing my sermons and other religious writings. The other two are The Quotable Spirit (Lorie & Mascetti) and Treasury of Religious Quotations (Tomlinson).

Parrinder is Emeritus Professor of the Comparative Study of Religions at the University of London. His book is the most scholarly and philosophical of the three. Many of the quotations seem to be chosen to illustrate theological positions rather than for any power to inspire. The book also has a greater emphasis on British sources than the other two.

The 3000 quotes are grouped under 177 topics.Unlike other sources which order topics alphabetically, Parrinder divides the 177 topics into 18 thematic chapters.A subject index is included for the more alphabetically inclined. However, variants of the same term (e.g. agnostic, agnosticism, and agnostics) are indexed separately. An author index is also included.

Parrinder's Christian orientation shows both in the selection of topics and in the selection of quotations.Nearly every topic starts with a quote from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and a quote from the New Testament (usually using the King James translation for both). Some of these selections seem forced, as if Parrinder feels he must include two Bible quotes for each topic. All other quotations are placed after the Bible quotes.

The sources most frequently cited (other than scriptures or founders of world religions) are: Aristotle, Augustine of Hippo, Francis Bacon, William Blake, Book of Common Prayer, Albert Camus, John Donne, Meister Eckhart, Mircea Eliade, R. W. Emerson, E. E. Evans-Pritchard, Samuel Johnson, C. G. Jung, John Milton, Blaise Pascal, Plato, John Ruskin, William Shakespeare, Alfred Tennyson, Charlotte Vaudeville (on Kabir), and William Wordsworth.

An earlier edition of the book was published as A Dictionary of Religious & Spiritual Quotations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
I'm not very keen on The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Quotations anymore. I've been using it for quite a while, but was never very thrilled with it. Now that Oxford Dictionary of Quotations by Subject (Oxford Paperback Reference) has come out, I think I am ready to retire this book.

At the time of its publication nearly two decades ago, Merriam-Webster's book wasn't so bad. It was a compact and affordable way to gain access to a general collection of quotations. I would have given it four or five stars back then. Not anymore, though.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT?
------------------------------
It fails to contextualize quotes. It often gives only the author's name and the source of the quotation. Usually no dates. And, no explanation about who the author is.

The quotations are outdated. As far as I can tell, nothing much past the 1950s. Of course, the old stuff is good, but there have been a lot of great quotations in the postwar period as well!

The quotations are almost entirely from dead white guys. Women and people from outside of the US and UK are hard to find.

SUMMARY
------------------------------
It won't hurt to pick up a cheap used copy if you come across one, but I would recommend looking elsewhere if you want something more up-to-date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value!
This is probably one of the best values in the quote book market!Very cheap book with thousands of quotes at an affordable price. It is a great reference book to keep on your desk if you use quotes regularly in your writing or speeches.I highly recommend this book.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable insights.
Like another reviewer, I've used the quotes from this "Handbook" in countless emails, postings on message boards and so forth.
The remarks are culled from the works of well-known figures like Oscar Wilde, and lesser-known thinkers like Errico Malatesta.
This book illustrates, among other things, why the establishment has made such an effort to mis-define "anarchism," which isn't about chaos and violence, but is actually a sophisticated ideology of human freedom and cooperation.
I'll simply share this quotation from Rudolf Rocker, from his book, "Anarchism and Anarcho-Syndicalism":
Power operates only destructively, bent always on forcing every manifestation of social life into the straitjacket of its rules. Its intellectual expression is dead dogma, its physical form brute force. And this unintelligence of its objectives sets its stamp on its representatives also, and renders them often stupid and brutal, even when they were originally endowed with the best talents. One who is constantly striving to force everything into a mechanical order at last becomes a machine himself and loses all human feelings.
It was from this understanding that modern anarchism was born and draws its moral force.Only freedom can inspire men to great things and bring about intellectual and social transformations. The art of ruling men has never been the art of educating and inspiring them to a new shaping of their lives.Dreary compulsion has at its command only lifeless drill, which smothers any vital initiative at its birth and brings forth only subjects, not free men.Freedom is the very essence of life, the impelling force in all intellectual and social development, the creator of every new outlook for the future of mankind. The liberation of man from economic exploitation and from intellectual, social, and political oppression, which finds its highest expression in the philosophy of anarchism, is the prerequisite of the evolution of a higher social culture and a new humanity."

For more on Rocker, I'd recommend this book that Noam Chomsky does the preface for. Anarcho-Syndicalism: Theory and Practice (Working Classics)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
I found this was a fantastic reference book for finding quotations to use in college papers. There are lots and lots of great quotes that will back up your point or exemplify someone else's.A lot of them are by very famous people too.

After I used this book a couple times for papers I found it too alluring to put it down, and I read the whole thing. This is a very well compiled collection of quotations that are organized by ideas to make quotes easy to find for papers.

If you're a fan of critical thinking you should check this book out at your library, and then you'll probably want to buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars absolutely indispensable--and addictive as heck
I purchased Bufe's eclectic collection of banter and agitprop some three(+) years ago, and haven't tired of it one bit. Initially, I thought it might be a good resource for writing, which it is, but was surprised to find myself constantly picking it up between projects, thumbing through it while on the phone, etc.

My only misgivings, as mild as they are, concern Bufe's, at times, transparent partisanship. Favoring Anarchism, he seems to present its patron saints (Bakunin, Goldman, et al.) in a more generous light than Marxists and other Socialists--and his representative sample of Christians and Christian thought flirts (tirelessly) with the straw-person fallacy. (Don't believe the hype--Jesus was a Socialist)

All in all, 'The Handbook' is a progressive's gold mine; I highly recommend it to any thoughtful person.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring, boring, boring
i bought this book because a)i colelct quotes and b)it sounded controversial. Boy was i ever disappointed

Do you know what an anarchist is? There are punks who sing down with the government. There are workers who hate government rules and taxes. There are business men who want an end to regulations. And then there are "intellectuals" who use big words to fill hundreds of pages on steady state economies and the like. Remember Karl Marx, the long winded Marxist who droned on about the proletariat, the bourgeious (sp?) and the formation of capital? This book reads just like that

While i suppose these are, technically, quotes, most are several paragraphs long. Is it really a book of quotes when each quote is half a page long? You certainly aren't going to be memorizing any of these - they are way too long

These quotes aren't controversial, unless of course your audience loves to use the word proletariat. Most of these quotes are just plain confusing. And they're all boring. Boring, boring, boring

The book is horribly one sided. It's not biased towards liberals, it's biased towards long winded "intellectuals" who like big words and vague concepts

Bottom line, you won't be quoting these in conversation, using them in term papers or discussing them at group functions. i'm hard pressed to say when you would ever use these quotes - they're just so long and elitistly boring. i really wanted to like a book with a name like "the heretics book of quotations", but i just couldn't

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!
I love this book. I originaly bought it just for shits and giggles- but I've ended up using it for spicing up many articles and countless e-mails. An essential piece of reference material for the anarchist, atheist, dissident and all around provocateur. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives Up to Its Title
Two things I really like about this neat book.First, it is divided into alphabetical topics (like friendship, money, success, worry, etc) and also a section about special occasions (like weddings, birthdays, anniversaries).Second, it uses the wonderful old King James Version but updates it just enough to make it user-friendly.No more "thou" and "thee" and "goeth" and all that, but definitely retains that kind of poetic flavor that the King James has (and most modern versions definitely DON'T have that flavor).I got this as a gift for a friend who does a lot of writing and speaking, and he liked it so much I ended up borrowing it a lot, so he finally dropped me the hint that I could buy my own...Again, it really does live up to its title, since you can find lots of great quotations here for practically any time in life, good or bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Organized, Very Useful
I got this very nifty reference book for Father's Day so I've taken my sweet time getting around to reviewing it.As someone who does a fair amount of public speaking I can say this is very user-friendly, because it organizes all the great quotations of the Bible according to topic, from 'Abuse' to 'Worry.'There is also a very helpful index, so basically it is very easy to browse for topics in this book.Besides just organizing the various quotations, each topical chapter contains a brief introduction that helps the reader understand the basic message of what the Bible says about that particular topics. The book is set in very readable type with adequate spacing between the quotations, so it is a very usable gift for anyone, including seniors.I think it is neat just to browse through this, but I also think it would be helpful to preachers, public speakers, writers, etc.Incidentally, it uses the old King James Version but (pleasant surprise) modernizes some of the more difficult words of that old version, so it manages to be both readable and traditional. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I've been reading and collecting books of quotations since I was about 13, and this is one of the best I've found. The quotes aren't arranged by category, so every one comes as a pleasant surprise. And although the book title would make you think this is merely another collection of "positive" quotations, that isn't true. There's something for whatever mood you're in.I can't say enough good things about this book.

Product Description
The last words of the dying often provide insight into their feelings about life. Some are peaceful ("It is very beautiful over there"—Thomas Alva Edison); many are spiritual ("Don’t ask the Lord to keep me here. Ask him to have mercy"—Walker Percy); others are angry ("God-damn the whole frigging world and everybody in it—except you Carlotta"—W.C. Fields); still others reflect the weary fight against death ("I’m bored of it all"—Sir Winston Churchill).

Nearly 2,000 deathbed quotations from saints, popes, statesmen, scientists, soldiers, musicians, athletes, artists, entertainers, writers, criminals and others are included in this reference work. Each entry includes a brief biographical sketch of the person and sets the quotation in context. The sources for the quotes include biographies, newspaper and magazine accounts, and, in a few instances, firsthand accounts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ruffin is an expert on this topic!
I have not read the book, but I am taking a European history course from C. Bernard Ruffin. He is able to give the last words of a great number of the people we study from the 1300's to present. And if he doesn't knowtheir last words, he probably has them in a book.I am very sure that ifanyone should write a book about death bed quotations, this man is the oneto do it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for All Business People
I am a management consultant who writes business books and articles.I like to spice up my presentations for clients and writings by including profound, humorous quotes.I recently used all of the standard quotationbooks (I have them all) to work on a book project, and found myself 7quotes short.I did not know what to do. I ordered a copy of this book onAmazon.com, and was delighted with the results. This book had more quotesof the sort that I like than all of the other sources I had used.I endedup changing many of the quotes I had already included because THE ULTIMATEBOOK OF BUSINESS QUOTATIONS had better quotes in it.I also liked that thebook was laid out in subject order, so it is easier to find a quote than bylooking up subjects in an index (the way most quote books are arranged). You will find your career and your popularity soaring if you use thisresource.Get it today! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book for quotes!
This book contains tons of quotations, and makes for a great reference book for those of us who use quotes regularly in our day-to-day life.I am not a huge fan of anonymous quotes, so those were annoying, but there were so many great quotes in this book that I still rated it five stars. This collector has done a fabulous job putting together a very good collection.

Enjoy!
