4-0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to polymeric materials
This book indicates the principal chemical routes to polymeric materials and the analytical methods to characterize them (with particular reference to molar mass determination). It clearly states the theory of end-to-end distances, the theory of chains in solution, the theory of rubber elasticity and the theory of bond conformation population. This book could be very useful to chemists requiring a quick prediction of the properties of their materials or a brief, easy-to-read, introduction to the most important and simple mathematical models in macromolecular science. ... Product Description
A renewed interest in aliphatic polyesters has resulted in developing materials important in the biomedical and ecological fields. Mainly materials such as PLA and PCL homopolymers have so far been used in most applications. There are many other monomers which can be used. Different molecular structures give a wider range of physical properties as well as the possibility of regulating the degradation rate. By using different types of initiators and catalysts, ring-opening polymerization of lactones and lactides provides macromolecules with advanced molecular architectures. In the future, new degradable polymers should be able to participate in the metabolism of nature. Some examples of novel polymers with inherent environmentally favorable properties such as renewability and degradability and a series of interesting monomers found in the metabolisms and cycles of nature are given. ... Product Description

Polymer latex particles continue to become increasingly important in numerous commercial applications. Advanced synthesis techniques are the key to developing new functionality for nanoparticles. These methods make it possible to tailor the size, chemical composition, or properties of these particles, as well as the molecular weight of the polymer chain as a whole, based on given requirements.

Advanced Polymer Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Surface Modifications summarizes important developments in the advanced synthesis and surface modification techniques used to generate and mold polymer particles. This book explores the evolution and enhancement of processes such as emulsion, mini-emulsion, micro-emulsion, dispersion, suspension, inverse emulsion (in organic phase), and polymerization. Understanding these developments will enable the reader to optimize particle system design, giving rise to a greater application spectrum.

This book:

  • Focuses on synthesis and characterization of particles with core-shell morphologies
  • Details generation of nonspherical polymer particles using different synthetic routes
  • Explores generation of specific architectures, such as block, star, graft, and gradient copolymer particles

The authors describe pH-responsive nanoparticles and smart, thermally responsive particles. They also cover surface tailoring of various organic and inorganic nanoparticles by polymers, as well as theoretical studies on the kinetics of controlled radical polymerization techniques. Condensing and evaluating current knowledge of the development of polymer nanoparticles, this reference will prove a valuable addition to the area of polymer latex technology.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book's presentation is terrible.
I cannot speak for other prints of this book, but the copy that I got is just terrible. The characters were all mangled and the type was completely unreadable.
Unfortunately, I cannot say anything about the content because reading such a horribly formatted book was just too painful.

Product Description

Crystalline organic materials and polymers exhibit a range of degrees of organisation which dictates their physical properties. This organisation morphology is a consequence of a complex interplay of a number of competing factors. This book attempts to bring together and simply present in a logical fashion the way in which molecular interactions lead to the observed morphologies. The book is aimed at undergraduates/postgraduates who are interested in materials issues. The book is arranged into self-contained chapters on various aspects of materials science and as such are self-contained discussions of topics such as: organic crystal, liquid crystals, plastic crystals, polymer morphology, polymer crystallization, amorphous glassy materials, polymer surfaces, polymer phase separation and structure and organisation in materials. A good knowledge of physical chemistry or chemical physics would be appropriate, however, many of the topics are discussed in such a manner that a detailed knowledge or mathematics or chemistry is not essential for an appreciation of the material presented. The book should provide complementary material for a range of courses in materials science, molecular chemistry and chemical physics.

Product Description
Written by a chemical physicist specializing in macromolecular physics, this book brings to life the definitive work of celebrated scientists who combined multidisciplinary perspectives to pioneer the field of polymer science. The author relates firsthand the unique environment that fostered the experimental breakthroughs underlying some of today’s most widely accepted theories, mathematical principles, and models for characterizing macromolecules.

Physical Chemistry of Macromolecules employs the unifying principles of physical chemistry to define the behavior, structure, and intermolecular properties of macromolecules in both solution and bulk states. The text explains the experimental techniques, such as light scattering, and results used to support current theories. Examining both equilibrium and transport properties, the book describes the properties of dilute, semi-dilute, and concentrated polymer solutions, including compressible fluids. It then covers amorphous liquids and glasses, and polymer networks. The final chapters discuss the properties of solutions containing stiff-chain molecules and polyelectrolytes. Topics also include the macromolecular nature of rubber elasticity, viscoelasticity, and the distribution of relaxation times associated with the glass transition.

By explaining the experimental and mathematical basis for the theories and models used to define macromolecular behavior, Physical Chemistry of Macromolecules demonstrates how these techniques and models can be applied to analyze and predict the properties of new polymeric materials. ...
