5-0 out of 5 stars Great AP prep book!
I wasn't sure about this because on places like [...] most kids were only talking about Barrons and Kaplan and other well known test prep books... but I found this one to be extremely helpful. It's meant not just as last-minute prep but to help you throughout the year, although I used it for last-minute. It's a really huge, thick book with lots of content. The practice tests were great, and there's a lot of solid advice that you can just sit down and read when you're in freak-out mode the week before the exam. I recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Will make you wanna jump on the bed!
The official book for all those toddlers that love this song.(btw, the best version I have heard of the song is on Putomayo's Animal Playground.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Little Monkeys
The pictures, layout, and the large print is very good.
Most of all I like the fact it has a CD to help young
ones who are not at reading level. It is also good
to play while in the car while going on long or short trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars First book my daughter "reads" by heart
My 2.5-year-old daughter loves this book--both for me to read to her and for her to "read" to me. The pictures are clear and the additional text simple enough that she can read the pictures and get all the text right from memory.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unusable Product
This book was a Christmas present for my son.It looked okay on the outside, but the board pages were detached from the binding and the middle pages were upside down! I was very disappointed. It was worse than buying it used.I ended up going to WalMart to purchase a similar one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Funny Rhyming Board Book for Rambunctious Readers
Most Americans are familiar with the popular nursery rhyme "Five Little Monkeys."Christelow takes this rhyme and illustrates it with cheery, lively colored-pencil illustrations, with a monkey mama and her five children. She opens the rhyme with a little bit of prose setup, as the monkeys prepare for bed -- then ends with a humorous illustration of mama jumping on her own bed, after the little monkeys finally fall asleep.

This story is about silliness, not moral instruction, but some parents may be concerned about the children's disobedience in persisting in their jumping. This is exacerbated by the fact that Mama later jumps on herown bed (although you might explain to bright children that adults are capable of safely engaging in activities that would be dangerous to children). In this sense the book can be taken as a cautionary tale against bed-jumping.But for most children it should be sufficient to explain that this story is intended to be silly, not serious.

The book is well illustrated, cheery, and lively, and toddlers will love the rhythmic repetition. One could wish that the opening and closing of the book rhymed as well, but it's still a fun read. ... Read more

Product Description
"In this book sparkling with atmosphere, a small boy experiences the joys of a snowy day. The brief, vividly expressed text points out his new awareness."--The Horn Book. A Caldecott Honor Book. Full color.Amazon.com Review

The Snowy Day, a 1963 Caldecott Medal winner, is the simple tale of a boy waking up to discover that snow has fallen during the night. Keats's illustrations, using cut-outs, watercolors, and collage, are strikingly beautiful in their understated color and composition. The tranquil story mirrors the calm presence of the paintings, and both exude the silence of a freshly snow-covered landscape. The little boy celebrates the snow-draped city with a day of humble adventures--experimenting with footprints, knocking snow from a tree, creating snow angels, and trying to save a snowball for the next day. Awakening to a winter wonderland is an ageless, ever-magical experience, and one made nearly visceral by Keats's gentle tribute.

The book is notable not only for its lovely artwork and tone, but also for its importance as a trailblazer. According to Horn Book magazine, The Snowy Day was "the very first full-color picture book to feature a small black hero"--yet another reason to add this classic to your shelves. It's as unique and special as a snowflake. ... Read more

In all there are 245 lyrics, arranged thematically.

To make these delightful poems accessible to the modern reader, theeditors have removed many of the orthographic impediments inherent inMiddle English verse and have modernized punctuation, capitalization, and obsolete letters while scrupulously seeking to retain thesubstantive integrity of the poems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worldes blisse, have good day!
I first picked up this book nearly twenty years ago, and it has remained a favourite of mine.Middle English poetry is relatively hard to come by, particularly in the 'original' version.Of course, this is a slightly modified original (modern typeface, a few spelling conventions that warrant attention), but for the most part, this is the lyric poetry as it was originally written. There are a few photographs of original manuscripts, some with musical notation added to the words, for comparison.

This collection includes all of the poetry from the Harley manuscript (a piece from the Middle Ages which is the sole surviving copy of a good number of Middle English poems), all the verses from the Brown XIV manuscript by Friar Herebert, and most of the poems in 'Secular Lyrics' the Oxford edition by R.H. Robbins. There are nearly 250 poems in all.

These poems are arranged thematically, and show the diversity of interests in the Middle English culture. This was a culture that was very much in transition, shifting from its historic Anglo-Saxon roots to one that was more in touch in a peaceable way with the continent, become more urban in many respects, and becoming a blended culture in many ways. There are influences of court and church, French, Germanic tongues, Celtic influences, rural pastoral settings and new town experiences.'In their copiousness and variety, too, these poems - songs of love and death, God and nature, the pleasures of the table and the fears of damnation, the ebullience of youth and the melancholy of old age - form one of the great bodies of lyric verse in world literature.'

Middle English encompasses a long time period and a variety of dialects; from the immediate post-Norman Conquest times when the language of Anglo-Saxons jostled with the language of the Normans, up to the generations succeeding Chaucer, when the Germanic and Latinate influences had blended together in a wonderful way.

The editors of this text, Maxwell Luria and Richard Hoffman, have departed from certain conventions, such as declining to contrive titles for lyrics; they also freely confess their difficulties with some of the poetry, like the Harley manuscript (they are far from the only ones to have this difficulty), and, because this text is intended primarily for students, have not spent a great deal of time trying to sort out all of these issues in this text.

This Norton edition also includes essays, divided into two sorts. There are four essays dealing with Critical and Historical Background (essays on style, content, performance, and cross-cultural connections), and several essays that focus upon six specific poems, including the very famous 'Sumer is icumen in'.Although these six poems are highlighted, many others are referenced and discusses within the broader framework of the essays.

This is a glorious collection of verse, lesser known but that which should be known. The essays are interesting and useful for helping understanding. There are bibliographies and an index of first lines useful for students doing research.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Myriad of Medieval Poetry
I am not a scholar, but here's my 2¢: It's difficult to find collections of Medieval English poetry; the most one can usually hope to find is a bit of Chaucer mixed with Renaissancepoetry. This collection provides awelcome relief with 245 poems separated into several categories: Religious, worldly, love, Christmas, bawdy, and more. My personal favorite is a 15thpoem which deals with racism. There are several essays, and all poems aredated and sourced. Why only 4 stars? The poems have been slightlymodernized, with regards to capitalization, punctuation, thorns and otherarchaic letters. ... Read more

Harold Bloom suggests Chaucer is one of those great writers who defeat almost all criticism. This volume takes an extensive look at The Canterbury Tales, along with an examination of the ending of Troilus.

This title, Geoffrey Chaucer, part of Chelsea House Publishers’ Modern Critical Views series, examines the major works of Geoffrey Chaucer through full-length critical essays by expert literary critics. In addition, this title features a short biography on Geoffrey Chaucer, a chronology of the author’s life, and an introductory essay written by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University. ...
