These camps are a wonderful experience for many children. They encourage physical fitness; improve skills; enhance coordination and self-esteem; and give children valuable lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline and hard work. And, for a child in love with a particular sport, it gives him a chance to play to his heart's content. For some kids heaven is a week of nonstop tennis. But sports camps are not right for every child. Sports camps focus on a single activity and can be quite intense. Children frequently train seven to eight hours a day at the overnight camps, and when they're not on the field, they watch sports videos or train "psychologically." Last years directive to provide preschool to all 4-year-olds is to begin being phased in this fall. The program will not be canceled. Its "too important" to do that, says House Education Chairman Jerry Mezzatesta, D-Hampshire.
