A Struggle to be Separate
This booklet was mentioned in a book entitled "Just Plain Amish" by E. R. Beachy, so I thought I'd get a copy.It briefly discusses various legal issues that the Amish in Ohio have had concerning education.The Amish believe that a child can become too wordly through knowledge and so prefer their children to end their formal schooling at grade 8.This brought them into conflict with local school boards, etc. beginning back in the 1920s.This booklet shows how these problems were peacably challenged and resolved.

Overall, an interesting book.Chapters are somewhat short, and there are a number of photos, sketches, and maps.The last dozen or so pages consist of a facsimile of a court document relating to a case from Hardin County, Ohio.

This book is quite scarce.The only source that I could find with a reasonably priced copy is Roger Haycock Antiques and Collectables in Holmesville, Ohio.He sells through abebooks.com, and provides fast & friendly service. ... Read more
