The Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia and Hong Kong were the first members of the Eastern Olympic Games. It was renamed as the Far East Championship from the 2nd event until the 10th event in 1934 and was held every 2 years. The 11th event was supposed to be held in Tokyo with the new name of Eastern Championship, however, the game was cancelled because of the threat of World War II. When World War II was over, the common idea of establishing a comprehensive sports festival for the Asian people sprang up among the leaders of the Asian countries. Sondi from India in 1947 emphasized the need to establish a sports event where young Asians can gather together to display their sports skills thus elevating the level of Asian athletes to that of Europe and the U.S. A suggestion to have a preliminary meeting for a certain kind of sports event in Asia was made to the heads of players from 13 Asian countries who were attending the 14th London Olympic Games in the U.K. The conference was attended by heads from Korea, Taiwan, India, Philippines, Myanmar and Ceylon (present Sri Lanka). An agreement to hold the 1st Asian Athletics Championship in New Delhi, India in February, 1949 and the establishment of the Asia Athletics Federation were made at the conference.

On the overall, however, Europe is the most powerful continent in competitions of both genders.
