5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, entertaining, and educational!
I use this book as a supplement to my Foundations of Education Class to show how basic issues in education[even in ND] have been around since statehood. In evaluation after evaluation, students say I need to keep this book as required reading. Many not only keep their own copy, but also buy an additional one for parents or grandparents who attended one-room schools. This book is rich with teacher narratives, copies of primary documents [ledgers, teacher's school day, exams], and words that still ring true today.I highly recommend this book ESPECIALLY for Midwest education teachers!

Excerpt: Shanley High School -The athletic teams at Shanley are called "The Deacons". Shanley had one of the most prominent football teams in the state through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, led by legendary coach Sid Cichy. The Deacons had the longest consecutive unbeaten streak in the country at one time: 59 games in a row. Their last Class "A" state championship was in 1983 when the undefeated Deacons defeated Bismarck St. Mary's in the snow in Bismarck under head coach Bruce Larson. Coincidentally, that same day the girls basketball team won the state championship in Williston. In 2009, Shanley was reclassed to "AA", the second level of North Dakota's four-class football system. It was the first year Shanley had not competed at the level of the largest schools in the state, with some over 1800 students larger by enrollment. On November 16 of that year, Shanley won the "AA" state football championship, defeating Devils Lake 31-30 in overtime, the first overtime finish of a state championship game in "Dakota Bowl" history, which is the event that decides all four of the state's football champions. Shanley High boasted a nationally renowned forensics program under Dr. Robert Littlefield (Professor of Communication at North Dakota State University) in the early 2000s. 4-0 out of 5 stars An exciting read but could use some editing
I picked up this children's book thinking that it might be appropriate for my church's library (a Native American Episcopal Mission). After reading it, I'm not really sure if it is appropriate. The story is exciting. The character of Jumping Badger (later to be Sitting Bull) is strong and develops well. The illustrations, while not marvelous, are fine.Values and morals are taught fairly well in this novel.

One of a few things that worried me (as a Santee Sioux person) was the use of the denigrating and dehumanizing word "squaw" throughout the book.Among my people, it would be a great, great insult to call a woman such a terrible thing.I think if the story were to be re-edited, the wonderful word "woman" could be placed in those instances.Another instance that worried me was the calling one woman a "witch".While there have always been "medicine women" throughout many ages, the use of the word takes the reader to another place that is not consistent with Dakota/Lakota/Nakota history and culture. An afterword by the editors on the use of the name "Sioux" and the words mentioned above may be of good use.

These two instances do not deter me from recommending this book.If anything, they may lead to conversation and a better understanding of Sioux cultures (note that there are more than one) and the use of language around concepts not indigenous to our own culture, i.e., "witch" vs. "medicine woman".

This is a great book for kids, but they may need a little guidance with it.I still haven't decided if it would be appropriate for my church's library and will first talk about this book with other elders.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about Sitting bull and the Sioux nation
I love this book. It is exciting and interesting. It involves war, bravery, and honor to be a sioux! ... Read more

Product Description
Tracing the difficulties and joys of carving out a life from the Dakota sod in the second half of the 1800s, Tender Mercies continues Snelling's RED RIVER saga and will pull your heartstrings and make you feel the joys and frustrations of life on the open lands of the 19th century midwest. The rich farmlands of the Dakota Territory in 1887 are finally beginning to yield the abundant harvest the pioneers had dreamed about so long. The establishment of the railroad has brought significant changes to the small town of Blessing as well as prosperity to the Bjorklund family and their neighbors. Among the townsfolk, Reverend John Solberg--despite being wary of matchmaking efforts in the past--is developing a friendship with a delightful young woman through their common love of books. Mary Martha has a gentle southern charm that wins everyone in her circle but too soon she is called on to return home to care for her mother. She leaves behind many heavy hearts and countless questions of whether it will be the last time to see her. Red River of the North, Book 5 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars book five of a great series
If you read book 1 of this series, you will definitely stick with it and read through all six total books in the series.Good clean historical fiction novel for those of use who don't want to have to skip page after page of bodice-ripping, muscle-gleaming sex scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars True To Life As It Was from 1887 - 1888 In The Dakota Territory
Tender Mercies (Red River of the North #5)

Book #5 in the "Red River Of The North" series is totally honest and lets you live through Snelling's character's eyes and hearts.I did not find it depressing in the least. After having studied genealogy and history, and loving the Christian influence in this whole series, I found it very good.As I never like to give away exactly what happens in a book, I will not do so here either.I'm reading the whole series (I mean ALL of them) again.Blessing, in the Dakota Territory has families whose lives change, as do all families. In this book you'll find a new teacher at the school, 2 marriages, the town of Blessing grows, loss of life (2 will really surprise you), a new machine for the ladies this time, and many other happenings. It is another great read by Lauraine Snelling.Another book that you won't be able to put down until you finish it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in this series
This was my favorite book in the Red River of the North Series. This book was very true to life in the early days of the Dakota territory. The blooming love between two relatively new characters was touching.I had a really hard time putting this one down.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
This is one of the best series that I have ever read. It is a must see but beware, once you pick it up you will not want to put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new character - Mary Martha
This is a very sad book at times with many deaths, but I love the new characters that were added. I think it was high time that the Pastor got a wife. Although many people complained they wanted more happiness, that wasn't the truth of homesteading or actually any lives in the 19th century. ... Read more

A Land to Call Home (Red River of the North #3)

The third book in the "Red River Of The North Series."I've read this series twice now, and still couldn't put the book down!Lauraine Snelling keeps her readers wanting more and more of the Bjorklunds's lives. I don't like to give out too many details on a book, because I would rather read the book and be surprised myself when I read them. You will find love and loss of love on the Dakota Territory prairie. There are again joyous triumphs and total sadness. Be prepared to have some time to read, because you will not want to put this book down. Lauraine Snelling has a way of padding each sentence with not your ordinary words. She paints pictures with her words, that you can see.An excellent book!

I have the whole set of Red River Of the North series I would recomend any one to read these great books

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This entire series has been excellent. It really puts a prospective on what life was like for immigrants and early farmers in the northern plains area. No frills, no fancy story lines, just good reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Settling In
I enjoyed this third book about the Bjorklunds.Although not quite as much of a page turner as some of the earlier books in the series, this one was still a wonderful "slice of life" read.

Blessing in Disguise (Red River of the North #6)

Lauraine Snelling has given us another great book to end her, "Red River Of The North" series.ALTHOUGH, there are more books! The next book, "A Dream To Follow" in the "Return To Red River" series finds the Bjorklunds and families that you have missed hearing about. Going back to this particular book,"Blessing In Disguise," has no deaths.I've read all of this series (plus the next ones) twice now, and find this book a good one; very true to life from an immigrant's perspective. It is a great book, intertwined with a surprising love story. You'll also find a new building in town, another family member arrives from the old country, more new faces, a lost immigrant, an addition to Kaaren's life, 2 marriages, and a great ending for all involved in the mystery of this story.North Dakota has become a state, with a family member involved in this historical journey.Snelling has brought us through a family's journey from Norway all the way through the state of North Dakota being founded. As a genealogist and history buff, I've loved the series and am VERY happy to keep reading.I'd call the next book, "A Dream To Follow" (in the new Return To Red River series), book #7 in Lauraine Snelling's ORIGINAL series! You must read this book, and the next book, and you'll find just what you're looking for! The beginning families that you knew and loved, and the next generation growing a few years older and finding new lives. This book, "Blessing In Disguise" brings in the characters to move us along to the next series. You won't want to move from your chair as you read this.A MUST read (as is the next one!).

5-0 out of 5 stars On the edge of my chair
I found the progression of the story and the twist and turns very interesting.I could not put this book down.I felt it represented truly what it must be like coming to a new country not knowing the language and find yourself in an unexpected situation. This is a must read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Blessing in Disguise
As with all books by Lauraine Snelling have enjoyed this one as well - nice to read them in sequence.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!!
I absolutely loved this 6th book in the series. Yes, the author did jump back and forth from the ranch to Blessing etc but it did not make the story disjointed. In fact, it made the story more interesting by keeping up with what was going on in both places and making us look forward to what we knew was going to happen in the end. When you start this series, it's hard to put down.I can't wait to start the Return to Red River series.

I found this to be a very sweet story and a great addition to the "Red River of the North" series.I would recommend this book to be read alone or as a part of the series without hesitation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great historical fiction
I enjoy a good historical fiction book that doesn't have extraneous sex scenes in it.Yes, they do mention God and pray to Him, but they don't go overboard with that.I have now read all six books of this series and it was an enjoyable read from book one to book six.

4-0 out of 5 stars Continuing the Red River Series
I really enjoy the Red River series and was glad to finally read #4.It is interesting to read about the specifics of pioneer life and farming. This book was a little slower in parts than the first three books in the series but continues with developing characters and a few new storylines.I like the faith based application of dealing with events in our lives that we don't understand why God allowed. Also, touched on addiction with one of the characters.Good book with life lessons woven into the storylines.

The Reapers' Song (Red River of the North #4)

As I read this series of books through the 2nd time in 2 years; I am still enthralled with the writing of Lauraine Snelling. These books are SO true to life, as to how the immigrants came from the old country, and settled a town. As someone who has studied genealogy and history, you are taken back to life as it truly was. As the families of Blessing, in Dakota Territory settle into their land and lives, good things come upon them as well as the bad things.Lauraine Snelling gives us a hint with her title, and people do pass on into the next life. The saddest part of the book is what happens to Ingeborg.I will not spell it out, because I like to be surprised myself when I am reading a book.I don't feel like reading through a book review that tells you everything BEFORE you've even read the book. Why read it then, if you know what's going to happen before you read it?Anyway, this book tells of sickness, a couple of new main characters, a serious accident, domestic abuse, family arriving from Norway, a marriage, a new vital building added to the town of Blessing, and an adoption. This is another one of Snelling's books that adds to the life of the town of blessing, and the life of the Bjorklunds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Story
Book 4 was still a great story, besides the at times slow movement of the story forward.I appreciated the introduction of some new characters in this book.
