1-0 out of 5 stars NOT recommended
I purchased this for my kindle to make it easy to carry around for my massage training & found I was not able to do a search to get to specific words. The only way I was able to navigate was to page through.Very disappointing & time consuming.I also found words missing that I felt should have been included in a medical dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Dandy!!!
I love this Medical Dictionary, exactly what I needed for my classes, and I am sure it will be just as useful in my career.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very thorough.
I got this as a quick reference at the start of my health care related program.I've had to use the internet or other books several times to supplement this book.
I'd research some other desk top/pocket dictionary before getting this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Dictionary
This is my second copy of this excellent book, the first got worn out and all the pages fell out. This is a very useful book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical dictionary & Health Manual by Bob Rothenberg MD
This manual contains thousands of simple and complex medical
terms written for the sophistication of the layperson. Here is
a sample definition:
ankylosis- inability of a joint to function , because of stiffness or fusion of the joint surfaces

There is an extensive section on anatomy tables which contains
definitions of key bones, blood vessels and joints. There is a
comprehensive chart of the adult teeth depicting the positioning
and individual names of the numbered teeth. There is a separate
section on what to include in a medicine chest. Another section
defines blood and urine analytic tests. For instance, 1200+cc
of urine is considered the norm for a 24 hour period of
measurement. The names and addresses of National Health related
institutes are set forth for ease of reference. This would be a very valuable guide for the layperson. The purchase is well worth
the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pocket-size addition to your white coat repertoire!!!
I'm currently a medical student and a large portion of our patient population is Spanish speaking only.Nice size, lightweight, this book has assisted me on numerous occasions in effectively communicating with my patients. It's a great resource for anyone -medical professional, traveler, etc.- who needs to know how to translate medical English into understandable Spanish.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book really bad
This is a very bad medical dictionary. It has a huge lack of medical terminology, everytime I need to traslate something I never find it in this "medical" dictionary ... so I go to a normal non-medical dictionary and often I find it ... hilarious.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
This book is exactly what I needed. When I am interpreting I bring this with me as a resource. It is small enough to carry. My large dictionary I keep at home.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good basic medical dictionary
If you require a more indepth medical dictionary consider "Diccionario Medico- Mosby"

4-0 out of 5 stars A very handy bilingual resource
This bilingual medical dictionary is a perfect pocket size reference for daily terminology for those working in the medical profession, students or simply for those who want to be able use medical terminology in both English and Spanish. The dictionary does not provide definitions of the medical terms or words so if your looking for a bilingual reference with definitions you should consult another source. The terms are arranged alphabetically and the equivalent word or phrase is provided from English to Spanish or from Spanish to English. For example: health food = comida saludable, to gain weight = aumentar de peso, vaccine= vacuna. The terminology is not at all complicated and is quite accurate. There are some practice dialogues patient- doctor questions and typical scenarios. The resource is perfect if you use it in the correct capacity, which is to quickly look up medical terminology and the equivalent meaning in English or Spanish. This dictionary is not an exhaustive resource; it would have been better if it were a little bigger. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars medical terminology for dummies
great as a reference book to keep with you at all times when you forget meaning of a word.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Terminology
This helped me in so many ways. The Doctor's writing was not readable but I found the terminology easy with this product. Thanks for making a book just for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars They've done it again
I don't own one single Dummies book that I have not been impressed with. You will love the author, although this is a somewhat serious subject, she makes it fun to learn and I have giggled out loud in areas reading it. I bought this to help with teaching my students. I teach Herbalism and it's important to understand Medical Terminology to safe guard the patient and yourself when practicing. Medications and herbs can cause adverse reactions or kill the effects of medicines and that would be a bad thing. So, to be good at what you are doing, know all that you can and what you can't remember, Have a good book on hand. Knowledge is power, and with great power is great responsibility so respect it and know where to find the knowledge. You will enjoy learning from this book and it takes a serious subject and puts it into prospective for you in an easy unconfusing way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Terminology for Dummies
Try learning this outside of a classroom I do feel like a Dum Dum. In the fall I will be in a classroom. I was told this book would be helpful. So far so good.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Good. Typical 'Dummies' book. Kindle ed. has advantages -- and disadvantages.
What I mean by 'typical 'Dummies' book', is that there's quite a lot of fluff -- of this type: "[new term introduced] ... I know, it sounds a lot like [pick one: a new dance step. the name of a band. a delicious dessert.] But it's really not!" Cute, but pretty extraneous. As always, though, I adore Rich Tenant's cartoons. I don't know how he can pull off so many truly funny single-panel cartoons on *so many* different topics. (He does the cartoons for every 'Dummies' book I've read. Which has apparently been way too many.)

This book on medical terminology specifically also has *far* more repetition than is really helpful. Repetition is a good thing pedagogically; but what the author has chosen to repeat is to a great extent the terms one has already learned from watching endless re-runs of 'Scrubs'. I'd have preferred that the repetition be saved for the more obscure and/or conceptually difficult terms.

The Kindle format is brilliant for books like this, on account of the integrated dictionary. Not only does the New Oxford American Dictionary include quite a lot of medical terms (far more than expected; it's pretty cool); if there's an unfamiliar term *within* the dictionary definition, one can place the cursor next to *it* for a definition -- and still return to the main text by clicking the 'back' button. Sweet. I have loved not having to pop up to grab the giant American Heritage off the shelf for the purpose of double-checking those word histories that I'm curious about -- or for double-checking medical terms I 'make up' to test my comprehensionas I read.

My one serious criticism of the Kindle version of the text regards table formatting -- which is extremely important in this book. The book includes many tables listing, for example, 'root of medical term with connecting vowel', 'definition', and 'medical term built with that root'. For example: 'crani/o', 'means: cranium or skull', and 'craniotomy'. In most cases, the root with connecting vowel -- *the thing we're trying to learn* -- cuts off on the right, so we lose the connecting vowel, and sometimes the end of the root itself. I'm nearly halfway through the book -- am reading it from the beginning -- and have come upon only a single instance where switching to 'landscape' view fixed the problem and made the cut-off words completely visible. In all cases, there is *plenty* of room to simply make the 'root' column wider without cutting off words in the remaining columns.

A minor criticism, is that the one image I've seen so far is, like so very many Kindle images, extremely faint -- fainter than the text. This is problematic, because the labels of the parts of the skeleton are extremely tiny, and are very difficult to read. It would help both legibility, and the impact of illustrations on the overall book design, if images and their associated labels could be darker.

The book itself is quite good, and covers a lot of ground for the price. I'd like to see the formatting fixed, but it's still useful. It's just making me work harder than I should have to to puzzle out the missing bits, given that I paid about USD 13 for my copy. Even given my complaints, I'm considering the A & P book in addition. Will make my final decision about that after I've finished reading this one, and the A & P sample. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stedman's Electronic Medical Dictionary
I was a bit disappointed in some of the limitations of this version of Stedman's.I'm a medical transcriptionist, and I often find that all of the items I'm looking up in Stedman's aren't there...and I have to resort to a simple "look up" through Word, and then a "Bing" search. It is invaluable, however, for the video capability it has if one needs that, and will give a professional and extended explanation of difficult terms most of the time.

This is great any definition you need is here.My son is a doctor and when he was in Med School he told me about this book and cd so I ordered it.I have used it many times through these few years.I have a large family and we had had a lot of serious health issues.Cancer- 5 different kinds Brain Tumors Heart Problems, Genetic Problems and other more comon things and it is nice to have this to refer to after having problems diagnosed and trying to understand things like hyper vs hypo things like that.Highly recommend.I would recommend the cd for your computer as many this are spelled a lot alike and that really makes it easy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stedman's Concise Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions: Illustrated (Book with CD-ROM
I bought this when I couldn't find my Mosby's Medical Dictionary. When I did find it, I decided to sell this book through Amazon. It isn't quite as extensive as the Mosby's, but it is a smaller book and not so bulky to take up space on the shelf or in a backpack. If you don't need a really extensive reference, this book is a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful reference book.
This reference book came highly recommended by a professor teaching an Online Medical Terminology class. It is just as the title states - Concise. You don't need to be a doctor to understand the descriptions of the medical terms. This was my first health care oriented class and I found it an extremely helpful tool that I will keep forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential and Useful Reference
I have had this book for the past few years. This is an essential and highly convenient medical dictionary. As a compact reference, I have been able to find the definitions to at least 90% of the words I have been looking for.The accompanying dictionary is an amazing and useful program to have installed on the computer.

The pictures/images in the printed dictionary are great to help illustrate various definitions. There are even several pages of photo-quality images in the middle of the book. The CD-ROM includes all of the information in the book in a very easy-to-use format. There are images, diagrams, and 3-D illustrations.

Recommendation: You won't go wrong with this dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb work of reference
This concise medical dictionary is not concise at all: it gives all the information one needs, accompanied by very clear and informative drawings and pictures and it even gives the reader the correct pronunciation of the word. The alphabet tags on the side of the book (they give the first two letters of the words on that page rather than only the first letter) are a major help for a quick reference.

I am "only" a biomedical scientist and not an M.D., but this book is very important in my daily work to understand all those sometimes hopelessly complicated medical terms that I encounter in articles and correspondence. I can imagine that this book can also be very useful for M.D.s en medical students to look up the terms they do not encounter every day. ... Read more

I've worked in health care for over 20 years at several facilities. This book was recommended at a conference over 10 years ago.I still have that copy and use it nearly everyday. It is much better than the online Dorlands and even Taber's.The Merck Manual has more information but this is precise with exceptional pictures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars medical dictionary in creole
I loved the illustrations. They would be useful in an ESL lesson.I even learned some new terms even though i grew up speaking creole.
It is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars great lesson
I found reasources for learning HaitianCreole are hard to find or very limited. This is really a great source for a working level of the language. Very natural way to learn by listening and speaking! This is consistant with other Pimsleur courses!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR MEDICAL MISSIONARIES
I lived and worked in Haiti for several years, so I already speak and read Creole. We didn't have a book like this to study from, but now that I am back in the States, I decided to get it to "bone up" because I am working with Haitians here.
The book is fantastic and will be helpful to health professionals.
The only beef I have with it is that there should be a pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book. Such as, "a" is pronounced as "ah" and "e" is pronounced as "a", "i" is "ee", etc. I can just hear the Americans pronouncing some of these words incorrectly and the people will not know what the Americans are talking about. Slight mispronunciations do make a difference in meaning in many words.
BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Medical Dictionary
I would highly recommend this English/Haitian Creole Dictionary. It has many illustrations and is divided into body systems. In addition, it has an alaphabetical word listing. There are also plenty of complete sentences translated to help with patient questioning and examination.A Haitian friend of mine said the dictionary was written the way Creole is spoken in rural areas, where I often work.I am not going to Haiti again without it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not for Spelling Only
I am a medical transcriptionist and not only need to be able to spell medical terms but also need to know how medical terms relate contextually to what I am typing. What I liked about Stedman's is the in-depthillustrations...for instance, nerves, skeleton, muscular structure. If Iknow the word is a kind of nerve but cannot quite understand the doctor, Ican look at these illustrations, read over the names and then listen againwith a better knowledge of what I am listening for. Also, Stedman's has aunique feature which I use all the time.Under "disease", thereare listed many types of diseases.Under "test", there arelisted the names of many standard medical tests that are given. This bookis invaluable to my work!

5-0 out of 5 stars American sign language medical dictionary
It is an awsome book.Really good for interpreters going into medical situations. I really enjoy the break down of each sign that defines the word in english.sometimes an English word will take three signs and the book goes through each one.

5-0 out of 5 stars important tool
This book is invaluable for anyone in the medical field who wants to communicate in sign. The medical term is defined and then how to sign the word is described in words as well as illustrated in diagrams. The diagrams are fairly easy to follow even if you aren't very good at translating things into three dimensions from 2 dimensions.I am very glad I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Random House Webster's American Sign Language Medical Dictionary
It came as promised and in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terminology you need to know!
I have been impressed with Elaine Costello's previous dictionary, so when I heard this book was out I was ready for something great! She did not disappoint. This book uses medical terminology to provide signed translations. I have found these to be very helpful. (In fact it helped me to understand the medical terminology better through the use of signs!) I think this is a must have for any interpreter, and beneficial for many deaf people. ... Read more
