Product Description
The great physicist’s elegant, concise survey of Newtonian dynamics, considered by many educators to be one of the finest elementary scientific treatises ever written. Its generalizations proceed gradually from simple particles of matter to physical systems beyond complete analysis. The book includes the chapter "On the Equation of Motion of a Connected System," from Volume II of Electricity and Magnetism. Two appendices deal with relativity motion and principles of least action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
This is a glorious book, I highly recommend it. Of course, you really shouldn't need me to recommend Maxwell to you. I can assuage any doubts you might have about the presentation being too antiquated to be useful to actual students, however. This isn't just for the historically interested expert, the insights are there for first time learners too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A A GEM IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE
It's striking that previous reviewers belong to two distinct camps. To some, this little book appears to be an elementary introduction to familiar physics -- even, to "Newtonian physics".Others recognize it for what I believe it is: a beautiful and elegant introduction to a new view of the physical world very different from Newton's.To express his theory of electromagnetic field and the holistic view of nature it demanded, he had found his way to the Lagrangianformulation, based not on the individual forces of Newton, but on the energy of whole systems.Individual elements are derived, if at all, only abstractly by way of generalized coordinates. This little volume restates the elements of this new view elegantly without its analytic mathematics. For more about this turning point in Maxwell's work see my study of its role in the Treatise. Figures of Thought.I spell out this view of Matter and Motion in an article reprintedon my website thomasksimpson.com-- look under the heading "articles".

For a beautiful exposition of the Lagrangian view and its foundation in the Principle of Least Action, see Cornelius Lanczos The Variational Principles of Mechanics (Dover Books on Physics and Chemistry).

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Reverence Required
Just as some assembly is required as with a good chair for the study, some reverence is required to understand this book.

Mordern physics is founded less on math (as some institutional slimeballs would have us believe) and more on the accurate revelations and precision wording--plus just a dash of intellectual wiggle-room--of our most distinguished and revered. Careful thought about just what is being said here by Maxwell along with a thoughtful historical perspective provides an analysis of science that is on par with any analysis of calculus (e.g., as found in Walter Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis).

To give this book less than 5 stars is a sign of reprehensible bad taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the fountainhead of modern physics
I suggest that the other reviewers completely missed the significance of Maxwell's book "Matter and Motion" as it is the fountainhead of modern physics. First, it introduces and outlines "Dimensional Analysis" which ALL physics theories MUST conform to. Dimensional Analysis is physics: Equations are maths: Units are politics. Secondly, Maxwell set the stage for Quantum Mechanics by introducing the concept that it is necessary to use statistics to model reality.

4-0 out of 5 stars From the horses mouth
This is how founding fathers thought and wrote about the Matter and Motion. It is a nostalgic reading. Maxwell himself wrote about Matter and Motion of course based on Newtonian Physics. You do not learn any new Physics unless you are doing study in the History of Science. Maxwell basically starts with definition of concepts in Newtonian Mechanics and explains Newton's laws of Motion. Force, Energy, Momentum all the good staff. Short book and interesting piece of history. Definitely worth reading of it for leisure or for study. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is the outcome of the research works the author has published during the past 30 years. It investigates the phenomenon of change in its most general aspects and the motion of a system of interacting particles as a concrete example of this phenomenon. The philosophical and historical background of the concept of change is reviewed. The dynamics of a system of interacting particles has a wide range of applications extending from the motion of few quantum systems to the expansion of the universe as a whole. The new dynamics introduced in this book is based on the notion of quantum memory, which means that in every process of change there is a changeless element in the form of the persistence of past states of a quantum system. In this book the author proposes solutions to some of the lingering problems in modern physics such as: the non-equilibrium distribution function of a system of interacting particles, the interpretation of quantum mechanics and the measurement problem, the unification of the special theory of relativity and quantum mechanics and the precise calculation of the age of the universe. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exploratorium books rock!
I would recommend any of the Exploratorium books. They have very "do-able" activities that can be dramatic and make their point clearly. This one has some repeats of other Exploratorium books, as well as new ideas.I work with elementary science students (from pre-K to 5th grade) and these books are jewels in my planning, especially for my middle elementary kids. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps what it promises
A previous reviewer gave this book a bad rating because she/he was not pleased with the preview pages offered at Amazon. Actually the preview pages are ok - it just happens that the author is dedicating the first chapter to brush up the students math. The book holds what the author promises in the preface: "The book is specifically designed to allow students with relatively weak mathematics and science problem solving to quickly gain the needed quantitative reasoning skills as well as confidence in addressing the subjects in physics"
The book is designed to accompany first year college students. Price/Value ratio seems ok - and it blends in with the second part "Beginning Physics II" (which has received good ratings as well).

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't really tell about this book
Amazon's preview of the book itself would be more useful if it complemented customer reviews.Yable of Contents always shows only one page when it may consist of two or several pages. The author's Preface and Introduction would tell what the scope and intent of the book would be.One random page, obtained by Surprise Me, shows a delta y over delta x.But is it a calculus-based book?I can't assume it is. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Broad Cross-Section of Engineering Mechanics
This work presents a wide sampling of solved problems and problems to solve. These include problems related to vectors, beams, trusses, friction (including that on inclined surfaces), virtual work, dynamics of a particle, moments of inertia, mechanical vibrations, and much more.

I only wish that there was an accompanying manual of solved problems for the problems which are not solved in this book. If such a solutions manual exists, please write a comment about it under this review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Might be better with separate outlines on each topic
I used this outline for review and with some problems I was having in a course on computational robotics I was taking a couple of years ago and I found this book to be an excellent review that answered all of my questions. However, my stepson used it in his statics and dynamics classes to help with the material when it was being presented to him for the first time, and he said he felt it brushed over some of the material in both classes. Even though this is a hefty outline, perhaps it would be better if they dedicated separate Schaum's outlines to each subject - statics and dynamics - and covered more ground in each subject rather than putting both subjects in the same book. This outline even has one chapter on mechanical vibrations, but it is just barely an overview and hardly gets into the subject at all. It might be best if that chapter were deleted entirely and more space spent on the subjects at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Mechanics
This book was helpful in putting together arguments for problems I was working on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplementary text
I have always liked the Schaum's series of books. They are straightforward and to the point. This text was no exception.

The most important aspect of this book is that it can be used as a supplement to most of the popular texts. I used it along with Beer & Johnston and Shames.

Quite a useful book on a difficult, hands-on subject.

Product Description

This book describes several tractable theories for fluid flow in porous media. The important mathematical quations about structural stability and spatial decay are address. Thermal convection and stability of other flows in porous media are covered. A chapter is devoted to the problem of stability of flow in a fluid overlying a porous layer.

Nonlinear wave motion in porous media is analysed. In particular, waves in an elastic body with voids are investigated while acoustic waves in porous media are also analysed in some detail.

A chapter is enclosed on efficient numerical methods for solving eigenvalue problems which occur in stability problems for flows in porous media.

Brian Straughan is a professor at the Department of Mathemactical Sciences at Durham University, United Kingdom.

Product Description

Elementary vortices – those tubular swirling vortical structures with concentrated vorticity commonly observed in various kinds of turbulent flows – play key roles in turbulence dynamics (e.g. enhancement of mixing, diffusion and resistance) and characterize turbulence statistics (e.g. intermittency). Because of their dynamical importance, manipulation of elementary vortices is expected to be effective and useful in turbulence control as well as in construction of turbulence modeling. The most advanced research works on elementary vortices and related problems were presented and discussed at the IUTAM Symposium in Kyoto, Japan, 26-28 October 2004. This book contains 40 contributions presented there, the subjects of which cover vortex dynamics, coherent structures, chaotic advection and mixing, statistical properties of turbulence, rotating and stratified turbulence, instability and transition, dynamics of thin vortices, finite-time singularity, and superfluid turbulence. The book should be useful for readers of graduate and advanced levels in the field of fluid turbulence.
