Product Description
The history of the Pine Tree State would be bare but for the contributions of hardy and impassioned individuals generals, governors, settlers and activists whose lives of leadership make up the story of Maine's "hidden history." Author Harry Gratwick creates intimate and detailed portraits of these Mainers, from the controversial missionary Sebastien Râle to Woolwich native William Phips, whose seafaring attacks against French Canada earned him the first governorship of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Gratwick also profiles inventors who "challenged the assumptions of [their] time and place," such as Robert Benjamin Lewis, an African American from Gardiner who patented a hair growth product in the 1830s, and Margaret Knight, a York native who defied nineteenth-century sexism to earn the nickname "the female Edison." Discover four hundred years of Maine's history through the tales of its unique residents, from soprano Lillian Nordica, who left Farmington to become the most glamorous American opera singer of her day, to slugger George "Piano Legs" Gore, the only Mainer to have ever won a Major League batting championship. ... Product Description

When twelve-year-old Donn Fendler gets tired of waiting for his father and brothers to join him on the summit of Maine's highest peak, he decides to find his own way back to camp. But Donn doesn't count on a fast-moving fog that obscures the path. He doesn't count on falling down an embankment that hides him from sight. And he doesn't count on taking a turn that leaves him alone to wander aimlessly for nearly two weeks in the empty mountain wilderness.

Hello:I am from Maine, but left in 1959, but still go home from time to time and really enjoyed reading this book. You can see Mt. Katahdin from my old homestead kitchen window.I had seen a write up on this book in a clipping a relative sent to me from Maine and that's why I decided to order it.Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars We liked the book.
It was interesting and appropriate for the children. We are religious, and enjoyed how the boy turned to Heavenly Father to help him out of his troubles.

5-0 out of 5 stars On a mile-high mountain in the wilderness

Mt. Katahdin, at 5268 feet, is the northern terminus of the Appalachian trail and the tallest mountain in Maine. Though it's a much-climbed mountain at the center of the popular Baxter State Park, its wildness and danger should never be underestimated.

In 1939, twelve-year-old Donn Fendler was climbing Katahdin with a party including his father and brother. Reaching the summit with a friend ahead of the main party, he was cold and bored and decided to go back to meet his father. He lost the trail in fog, and spent a grueling nine days in rugged terrain on the north side of Katahdin before finding his way out to a hunting and fishing camp. The press was full of the search for young Donn and his rescue was celebrated with headlines, a parade, and a chance to meet the President of the United States.

Donn credited his Boy Scout training and his faith in God with bringing him through the ordeal. His shoes and then his feet were cut to shreds on the rough stone outcroppings; he was tormented by insects, frightened by a bear, tumbled in an icy river. His "dungarees" were impossible to walk in, once wet, and he lost them. He suffered from cold, hunger, loneliness and hallucinations. Toward the end of his ordeal Donn followed telephone wires and a stream, knowing that both would eventually lead him to what civilization there was in the great woods of Maine. Though he lost 16 pounds and was severely cut and bitten, he made a full recovery.

The boy's story, as told to James Egan, was published later in 1939 and has been a beloved family and school classic in Maine since that time. Fendler himself still visits schools and libraries to tell his story. Generations of Maine children have learned a lesson of courage, faith and will from Lost! on a Mountain in Maine. This audio presentation is engagingly read by another twelve-year-old, Amon Purinton. I recommend this story for family listening or reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars L is for Lobster is awsome!
I have 2 grandchildren that don't live in the state of Maine. This book talks all about our state with great illustrations.I want my grandchildren to know about where there parents came from as they will have many visits to our great state.

5-0 out of 5 stars L is for Lobster
Everyone loved this book, it was just perfect for someone learning the alphabet and loves lobsters and all that Maine had to offer

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading on our Roadtrip
We bought this book for our trip to MaineThe whole family found interesting facts and wonderful pictures. There is text geared to mature people - like even some adults - and, of course, the simple alphabet for the tots.We learned things about Maine we never knew and we've been going there for more than decade.Heck - our relatives who LIVE there grabbed the book. After all - Maine is WAY more than just lobsters.

I'd recommend this children's book to any family interested in learning more about the great State of Maine. We plan on buying others in this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another alphabet book
This delightful book will definitely appeal to young children learning their letters, but perhaps even moreso to people of all ages.

Lobster, of course, indicates Maine and so the author takes us through the entire alphabet with animals, places, or ideas associated with that state. On each page is a simple rhyme concerning the word starts with that letter. On the side of the page is more information, perhaps scientific or historical. I learned several things I did not know. The illustrations are not only beautiful, but technically accurate as well. One must really see this book to appreciate it.

Interestingly, at no time does it seem that the author had to reach to come up with a word for any given letter.Quick:what would you think of for the Letter U?Why the University of Maine, naturally -

The University of Maine starts with UHere, students called "Black Bears" dress in blue.A University is a place where big kids goto learn about everything they should know.

This concept could easily be used as a family game while vacationing. It almost makes me wish my children were younger and still traveled with us.

I heartily recommend this book and as a teacher I would like to see something just like it for each state in the Union. ... Read more

Excerpt: The 24 Hours of Le Mans (24 Heures du Mans) is the world's oldest sports car race in endurance racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, Sarthe, France. Commonly known as the Grand Prix of Endurance, it is organised by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and runs on a circuit containing closed public roads that are meant not only to test a car and driver's ability to be quick, but also to last over a 24 hour period. At a time when Grand Prix racing was occurring throughout Europe, Le Mans was envisioned as a different test from motorsports. Instead of focusing on the ability of a car company to build the fastest machines of the time, the 24 Hours Le Mans would instead concentrate on the ability of manufacturers to build sporty yet reliable cars.
