Excerpt: Aurelia Frick (born September 19, 1975) is a Liechtenstein government minister with responsibility for justice, foreign affairs, and cultural affairs. Frick studied law at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, graduating in 1999. She received a doctorate from the University of Basel, with a thesis on "The Termination of the Mandate", and passed the bar examination in the Canton of Zurich. Frick, a member of the Progressive Citizens' Party in Liechtenstein (Fortschrittliche Bürgerpartei in Liechtenstein, or FPB) was at age 34 appointed to the ministerial justice, foreign affairs, and cultural affairs portfolios following the March 2009 parliamentary election in Liechtenstein. Frick became one of Liechtenstein's five ministers, and one of two women in the cabinet (the other being Renate Müssner). She was expected, on appointment, to pursue reforms of Liechtenstein's civil and criminal law. After graduation Frick worked at a Zurich law firm, and then as legal director for a London-based human resources company. Excerpt: Vaduz Castle -The earliest mention of the castle can be found in the deed of the Count Rudolf von Werdenberg-Sargans for a sale to Ulrich von Matsch. The then owners - presumably also the builders - were the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans. The Bergfried (12th century) and parts of the east-side are the oldest. The tower stands upon a piece of ground of about 12 x 13 m and has a wall density on the ground floor of up to 4 metres. The original entrance lay at the Hofzijde at an 11 metre height. The chapel St. Anna was presumably built in the Middle Ages as well. The main altar is late-gothic. In the Schwaben War of 1499, the castle was burned by the honorbound of Switzerland. The west-side was expanded on by Count Kaspar van Hohenems (1613-1640). The Liechtenstein family acquired Vaduz Castle in 1712 when it purchased the countship of Vaduz. At this time, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, combined the countship with the Lordship of Schellenberg, purchased by the Liechtensteins in 1699, to form the Principality of Liechtenstein. The castle underwent a major restoration between 1905 and 1920 during the reign of Prince Johann II, and was expanded during the early 1930's by Prince Franz Joseph II. The Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Diet. The party system is dominated by the conservative Progressive Citizens' Party and the conservative Fatherland Union. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. On 15 August 2002, in his National Day Address, Prince Hans-Adam II announced that after months of intensive negotiations, a compromise in the debate on constitutional reform had been reached. On 13 September, Prime Minister Otmar Hasler confirmed to Parliament that his government was drafting a bill for Parliament based on the compromise reached between the Prince and the Citizens' Forum. The draft bill, which would increase the executive powers of the monarch, went before Parliament for a first reading in November. Once approved by Parliament, the bill was then presented to voters in a referendum, and approved by 64% of those voting in 16 March 2003. The monarch is hereditary. Following legislative elections, the head of government is appointed by the prince and proposed and voted on by the parliament.
