The activities offer a positive and exciting learning experience for eager-to-learn kindergartners, introducing them to basic math and reading skills.

Designed for children ages 4 and older, the Kindergarten Reading and Math Activities pad features 200 activities. Each focuses on a different math or reading skill and provides plenty of opportunities to practice that skill. The activities are arranged in order of difficulty, beginning with the most basic skills, to build a child's confidence. Kids will enjoy activities such as matching objects, solving puzzles, and identifying missing letters. Children will have fun as they reinforce these reading and math skills:

  • Sight words
  • Letter formation
  • Phonics
  • Word families
  • Adding and subtracting
  • Rote counting to 100
  • Counting money

Every activity explains the kindergarten math or reading skill being taught and is labeled with a skills key to help parents identify skills that children may need to practice. Answer pages are included at the back of the book. Many pages suggest additional hands-on activities to help reinforce skills. Featuring colorful, 11x16-inch worksheets and a sturdy cardboard backing, the Kindergarten Reading and Math Activities book can help kindergartners get a head start in school.

The book is part of a learning series that also includes the Preschool Reading and Math Activities pad and the First Grade Reading and Math Activities pad.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 4 Year Old is Happily Learning
My 4 year old loves the "challenges" of this workbook. It presents a systematic approach to learning sounds of consonants and vowels which my little one finds fun and absorbing. However, some of the pictures are not clear. For example, the mouse and the rat were very similar. A mop puzzled him: "What's this? Spaghetti at the bottom of a stick?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading, Writing Activities
This book is a pre-k teacher and pre-k mom must have.It is packed with truely great ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to teach reading -- while having fun!
When I picked up this book, I did not expect it to be so comprehensive in teaching reading and writing. This a small, but powerful book. I expected a few activities as a supplement to other methods. The activities use all five senses and are fun. They incorporate dancing, singing, and sometimes eating. As another reviewer wrote, this may be the only book you may ever need to teach reading!

I have a Masters Degree in Education, with focus on literacy and learning disabilities. I have read many books on whole language vs. phonics instruction, but none that incorporated both as well as this one does.

The book is divided into 7 sections, each one building on the other as they master it. Within each section, is a list of supplies needed for the activities. This is the only book that I have read that I really have all the supplies necessary to start right away. Then, the actual activities. At the edge of each activity page, there is a box that the author has given some more wonderful information. She has a Reading Zone with books to read to the child to expand on the activities. There is Teaching Time that explains the concept development that the activities focus on. The last, but very important item the author included, is State Standards Say which tells what most states expect of children to know when they are tested in reading at school.

Here are the 7 sections (just a small sample of activities included):

Let's Talk About It (prereading skills)
make a collage, make a sequence crown
teaches to identify and sort words, extend vocabulary, following directions, connect to real life experiences

Start with Sounds
rhyme time, treasure hunt, monster munch
recite and produce rhyming words, listen for phonemes in words

Print Power!
rainbow writing, autograph book, word necklace
distinguish letters from words, learn that print provide information in everyday setting

Now I Know My ABC's
eating the alphabet, milk-cap mania, alpha-pet
learning upper and lower case alphabet, sequencing letters

Phonics Fun
alphabet crowns, word puzzlers, phonics gizmos
learning consonant and vowel sounds, as words change so do sounds

Write On!
office signs, business cards, stationery, it's in the mail, spell-a-phone
identify types of everyday printed materials

Beyond the Tale
dazzling diagrams, wonder webs, teeny-tiny theater
learn to use fiction and non-fiction material, retell stories

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book Full of Great Activities!
This book is so cute is it filled with really fun learning activites. We use it for Kindergarten homeschool.Very fun and educational!

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect Early Literacy resource
As a librarian working with parents to help their preschoolers develop pre-reading skills, I have recommended this book hundreds of times. The activities in this book are fun, easy, inexpensive ways to develop all the essential skills children need to master before they can learn to read.Activities include letter knowledge, rhyming, word families, recognizing environmental print, and other important pre-reading skills. Most can be done with no special materials, or with paper plates, magazine pictures, and other materials you probably have lying around the house.Hauser is tuned in to how children learn and how they play; activities are age-appropriate and avoid the "drill & kill" approach by keeping activities fun and filled with child appeal. The first (and possibly only) resource you need to raise a child who's ready to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for an Early Childhood Curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars More information
I'm cheating a bit because this is my own book and I'm proud of it. (You may disregard my rating--winks). Not only does "ABC, Follow Me!" help children with the sounds of letters (phonemic awareness), but it also helps them recognize and differentiate letter symbols. The crafts are included not just for their fun value, but also because they help children get a kinetic feel for letter shapes--something that can be very useful for dyslexic learners. For example, one craft suggests that children cut out large letters and then place a sheet of paper over the cut-out and make a rubbing. Also included are playground activities using letter chants, dramatic play suggestions, ideas for related creative art projects, and bibliographies of additional useful resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all K & Grade 1 Teachers
Every kindergarten and first grade teacher needs this book! Fun rhymes teach and reinforce phonemic awareness. Crafts are age-appropriate and inexpensive, created with materials most teachers have on hand. Craft patterns are included, as well as photos of the finished product. The lessons offered are great ways to engage children in learning. ... Read more
