Best Children's book On the Iroquois
I was referred to this book by the contributing editor, Barbara Gray-Kanatiyosh.She is a Mohawk lady who has an Iroquois Homework Help team (***) where she answers questions about her people's culture.

I was very impressed by Kanatiyosh's web site and the help she gave me and was thrilled when I bought this book.Now I can teach my nieces and nephews about the Iroquois and know the information given is culturally sensitive and accurate.

The artwork and photos of the Iroquois people are wonderful and new.Not the same old pictures and information you see in every Iroquois book. My favorite sections are the ones explaining Iroquois society and how longhouses are built. This book is wonderful.I am surprised it hasn't won an award yet! ... Read more

Welcome to Dreamtime
This is one of the greatest books I have ever read.I felt like I could truly connect to my dreams after finishing this book.Told from an interesting first hand impression, it is honest and refreshing giving a glimpse into Native beliefs.

This is a great author and great book.I experienced many personal connections regarding my Native American ancestors and healing practices within the pages of this book.Very easy read.This book lead me to many other books written by the same author.

Dreams
A great book that explains the doorway to our dreams and how our dreams may help us face up to lifes challanges. A wonderful read and the author has clearly spent time in other realitys that are just as real as our own.There are many guides and messengers that can help us through our dreams if we are open to them and can remember how to communicate in this fascinating world.

Before the revolution
Our standard secondary school history jumps abruptly from Jamestown and Plymouth Rock to Lexington & Concord.The intervening 150 years are barely mentioned.The Jennings trilogy examines this period.In the instant volume we see the native Americans neither as passive victims nor noble savages but as politicians, diplomats, merchants and power players.Though probably doomed from the start due to the absence of immunity to European diseases, for a period of several decades they interacted with the early colonists on a basis of near parity. The Iroquois actually attempted with some skill the become the central player that would resolve the French-English rivalry and leave them at the center and in command. Jennings shows us that though this didn't happen and though the odds may have been against it such goals were far from fantasy.It's enough to cause one to imagine that "chutzpah" is a Mohawk term. One can only wonder, if the Indians had not been devastated by disease what the political map of North America would look like today.

Jennings slays a bunch of comfortable historical assumptions
Francis Jennings, long associated with the Newbury Library American Indian collections has brought his vast knowledge to bear on the subject of the Iriquois as the fearsome 5 or 6 nations who independently cowed both theirfellow tribes and the English and French colonists. He proves it wasn't sowith so many documents of which we have never heard in our schoolbookhistory texts that I wonder how such material escaped notice previously. Inthe process he slays some American Sacred Cows such as Francis Parkman. Onelearns that the Indian frontier was no such thing and didn't exist but wasa commonly inhabited piece of terrain, peopled by various tribes and theEuropean invaders who traded with them. Relations were, for the most part,reasonably amicable, which accounts for the fact that during later wars theEastern Indians frequently exhibited what we call civilized treatment ofenemies and prisoners. (Of course there were the exceptions, usually welljustified.) But in the beginning, the Dutch, Swedes, English and French,all found it necessary to deal with the various tribes quite diplomaticallyin order to survive, and use them in their wars of empire with one another.Furs in return for trade goods were king.The undoubted reality is such avast contrast with the accepted picture of our frontier that this book, aswell as Jennings others in this series, should be required reading torepair the damage done in our schools by claptrap such as Parkman and otherrevered historians who followed his lead, writing off the Indians asbarabarians and the frontier as a clearly delineated line across whichwhites stepped only if they were willing to take their lives into theirhands. Instead we find two cultures living amicably in common communitiesup until the first half of the 1700's when the balance was upset by drivingout the Indians such as the Delewares and Shawnees so that they located inthe Ohio country and became relatively independent. The Iriquois had alarge hand in this and it was their undoing. Read the book. It is acomplicated subject but well worth digesting. I recommend reading it insmall doses and having an atlas nearby. ... An Iroquois legend to explain the sweet song of the Hermit Thrush
A long, long time ago the birds and animals made an agreement to live peacefully together by dividing the forest.The birds would live in the trees and the rest of the creatures would live on the ground.This worked well until the morning came, an which point all of the animals that were grateful for the sunrise and wanted to praise the day started screeching, squawking, growling, and bellowing.At the next meeting it was decided that while a song to give thanks for the day was a good idea the sound of their collective voices was not.So they decided to have a contest to see which animal had the song best suited for this great honor.

The title of this Iroquois legend, retold by Gloria Dominic with illustrations by Charles Reasoner, gives away to young readers which animal is going to come up with the sweetest sounding song.But how the Hermit Thrush comes up with the song and when he sings it will come as a surprise.One of the interesting things about ancient myths and legends is how they explain aspects of nature, such as the sweet song of the Hermit Thrush.As the quotation at the beginning of the book points out: "It may be thought that the memory of things may be lost with us.We nevertheless have methods of transmitting from father to son an account of all these things."Young students have a tendency to ask "why" a lot and this book will answer that question, even though they have never asked this specific variation on that constant theme.

As is the case with all of the books in this series the back of the volume looks at the history of the Iroquois.A map lays out the Iroquois homeland across what is now New York State as this section describes the culture and daily life of these Native Americans.There are photographs and drawings that show the food and clothing of the Iroquois, as well as a look at where the Iroquois live today.This is followed by a Glossary of terms from "buckskin" to "wampum," and a list of Important Dates from Columbus landing in the Americans in 1492 up to 1988-89 when the sacred wampum belts of the Six Nations were returned to them from a couple of museums.There is also a photography of a Hermit Thrush in the back so that you can judge how well of a job Reasoner did.One of his fortes as an artist is the authentic detail he provides for the people in these stories, but except for the grandmother who tells this story to her grandchildren as the framing device for "Song of the Hermit Thrush."But in this one the best watercolor paintings are ones where does the elk or any animal with lots of brown, because the variant shadings are quite compelling.

New York Indians
Edmund Wilson wrote this book after he realized he had given out misinformation to a British journalist regarding the Mohawk Indians of New York, who were once part of the Iroquois confederacy. (Wilson owned a home in Talcottville, NY, north of Utica, in the heart of the old Iroquois confederacy territory.) He researched and studied as much as he could about the Mohawks (and the Senecas, the Tuscaroras, and the Iroquois). He began writing about what he learned, particularly about the land squabbles these tribes had with the government mainly over treaty lands and the building of huge dams that threatened them. Wilson combined the Indians's modern-day struggles with their ancient rites. A well-known chapter concerns the Mohawk "Skywalkers" who helped construct the highest reaches of the Empire State Building. As with everything Wilson wrote, the book is highly informative, even authoritative, and extremely well written. ... Read more

Nickel Eclipse is a merging of personal and cultural history. Structured in part like the alternating colored beads on a wampum belt, patterns emerge from this exploration of contemporary life on an eastern Indian reservation and the sometimes tenuous persistence of a culture after centuries of survival within another, more dominant, culture. The poems, while highly personalized, reflect the tension of speakers surviving within-though never fully of-that larger culture, where lives are formed and meaning defined by their inherent separateness. Gansworth's paintings complement the poems, using the metaphor of the cycle of moons identified in the traditional Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) culture's calendar.

These paintings of the different lunar phases serve to organize the poems around a common image, breaking them into sections through the use of an eclipse. Additionally, the relationships indigenous communities have had with the United States-from thriving to near extinction to eventual re-emergence-are symbolized in the progression of that eclipse across the moon.

Symbols common to the culture appear throughout the cycles: the Three Sisters (Corn, Beans, and Squash), Strawberries, and Green Corn, from the ceremonies named for them, and more consistently, wampum beads-within which Haudenosaunee culture is iconographically documented-appear in various incarnations, from the earliest shell groupings, through isolated shaped beads, small strings, and full-belt formations. ...
