5-0 out of 5 stars Great story communicates the message
My kids read this book at school and loved it.It's a fun story about a cat who goes online and gets into trouble when he agrees to meet in person with another online kitty, "Happy Fluffy Kittyface."Kittyface turns out to be a big bulldog.

Fun story deals with a dark topic in a sensitive way with the traditional cat vs. dogs rivalry (Tom & Jerry, Sylvester & Tweetie Bird).

Recommend it highly.

Essential strategies to keep children and teens safe online

As our children and teens race down the onramp to the Information Superhighway, many parents feel left behind in the dust. News stories about online sexual predators, child pornography, cyberbullies, hate groups, gaming addiction, and other dangers that lurk in the online world make us feel increasingly concerned about what our children are doing (and with whom) in cyberspace. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Internet safety expert Nancy Willard provides you with need-to-know information about those online dangers, and she gives you the practical parenting strategies necessary to help children and teens learn to use the Internet safely and responsibly.

Parents protect younger children by keeping them in safe places, teaching them simple safety rules, and paying close attention. As children grow, we help them gain the knowledge, skills, and values to make good choices--choices that will keep them safe and show respect for the rights of others. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Willard shows you how those same strategies can be translated from the real world to the cyberworld, and that you don't have to learn advanced computer skills to put them into effect. As you work on these strategies with your child, you will also discover that remaining engaged with what your children are doing online is much more valuable than any blocking software you could buy.

"Willard blends the perspectives of a wise parent and a serious scholar about issues related to Internet behavior and safety. . . . Pick up the book, open it to any random page, and you will find on that page or nearby a wealth of helpful advice and useful commentary on the cyberreality facing our children and on how to deal with any of the issues she's identified."
--Dick Thornburgh, J.D., former U.S. Attorney General; chair, National Academy of Sciences Committee on Youth Pornography and the Internet

"Simply put, this book is a must-read for anyone--parents, educators, law enforcement, and policymakers alike--concerned with the critical issue of children's internet safety and what to do about it."
--Douglas Levin, senior director of education policy, Cable in the Classroom ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Read
Nancy Willard is the pioneer of cyberbullying awareness and cyberbulling legal issues. This book absolutely must be in the library of any person concerned about cyberbullying and cyberthreats.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource to help adults connect with young people in their cyber world
Willard, one of the leading experts in the field of cyberbullying, provides very useful Internet parenting strategies and age-appropriate guidelines in an easy-to-read, inviting format. She looks at issues such as the wide appeal of social networking sites, privacy, and commercial aspects of the Internet, and also provides insight into brain development, how technology can interfere with responsible decision making, and suggests strategies that parents can use to help young people make wise choices in the cyber world.Parents will appreciate the section on "Specific Risks and Concerns," which includes online pornography, cyberbullying, violent gaming, computer security concerns, and more.Willard also provides ways for parents to encourage their children to engage in enriching online activities.A "Parent-Teen Internet Use Agreement" is included in the Appendices. While clearly addressing the risks, Willard never loses sight of the many positive aspects of the Internet, and provides practical ways for parents to connect collaboratively with their children in the cyber world. As a professional in the field of cyberbullying,I appreciate the useful contribution this book represents.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Nancy Williard is active in Cyber Bullying prevention and has a variety of books and articles on the topic. This book was used for reference in my masters thesis on cyber bullying prevention. It will also be an excellent source for parenting children in the cyber age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for parents/teachers
This book is a great guide for parents moving kids through the "web" of the internet. She gives specific suggestions for young kids (e.g., Have all of their kid-safe sites bookmarked. They can only go to bookmarked pages w/o mom or dad.) through late teens (Let them make mistakes on the 'net while still at home w/our support!).Perfect resource for me.Quick read.Reminds me not to blow up when a kid comes to me with some issue- or they won't come to me again!Nice parenting advice and cyber-guide.Recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Voice of Reason
I read Nancy's latest book, Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, on a flight this past week, partly because it's been sitting on my shelf for way too long, and partly because I knew I would be speaking a few days later to youth at a regional church meeting about technology in their lives. It is a great book on the Internet for parents, and don't miss the good material that she provides at her related website, www.cskcst.com, that you can download and distribute for teaching.

2-0 out of 5 stars using internet for dummies
Have not had time to look through the whole book. But so far it looks like there is little in it of use to me.I feel I wasted my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Internet for Seniors/Dummies
This is a goot tool/book for seniors who need to read in big print. Bought for my Dad and he loves the big print and the ease within the pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it at your computer for best results
Move over seniors! This book is useful for any age. It offers specific helps and walks the internet user through the process so that you feel comfortable with each new topic. I find it works best to sit in front of my computer and practice what I read to solidify each suggestion. My only complaint is that the writing in the examples is too small and grayed. Working at the computer solves this problem, since I can now see it full screen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Are older women afraid of computers?
The woman on the cover of this book looks like a character out of a pharmaceutical ad for an anti-anxiety drug. The idea behind this series is good, but the image of a sad, gray-haired woman in conjunction with the word "Dummies," seems demeaning. It's no wonder that, in the reader reviews, most of the purchasers of this book are adult children of seniors and not the seniors themselves. A humorous cover would have been more effective and not as insulting.

5-0 out of 5 stars I sent this to my Mom and Dad.
I consult to businesses about online safety and one of the biggest customer communication challenges has always been how to educate people about being safe online without scaring or boring them. This book does a great job of achieving that balance.Statistically, senior internet users are more likely to be targeted by online fraudsters/scammers for a variety of reasons. What the authors do is describe the many situations that can lead to trouble and the relatively simple (and intuitive) ways to avoid it.The book covers online dating, online gaming, social networking, sharing pictures, sharing personal information, using email, using financial sites, talking to the grandkids about staying safe online, etc. What it drove home to me is that there are more minefields out there than we care to imagine and that when mistakes happen, they can be very serious. As such, I ended up buying a copy of the book for my parents because they are frequent online users, they are only aware of potential online pitfalls at a cursory level, and like many other seniors, if something were to go wrong, I would not be first on their list to call. ... Product Description
How to Protect Your Children on the Internet is a one of kind book that breaks down complex computer technology terms and software into an easy to use set of recommendations that average parents can use to protect their children as they navigate the Internet. Written by an IT expert and educator, Gregory Smith puts his finger on the pulse with regards to how to monitor teen Internet use and how to manage and restrict Internet technologies to mitigate the risks of going online.

How to Protect Your Children on the Internet brings to light some chilling examples of how minors and adults conduct themselves online and follows up with recommendations to mitigate the risks by a variety of online tools and countermeasures. Part One provides an introduction to the Internet with a highlight of the benefits and risks of going online. The bulk of this part of the book explains some key technologies and why they're important for parents and educators to understand, along with the risks associated with going online and what parents are doing to protect their children. Part Two is designed to give parents and educators a map and clear set of recommendations on how to protect children if they use a variety of the Internet-enabled tools and technologies that introduce risk in the first place. These include email, IM, Internet browsing, blogs, cell phones with text messaging, PDAs, online chat, social networking sites, and even Internet-connected video cameras. The final chapter concludes with some helpful hints for parents to talk to their children about the risks associated with using the Internet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Comprehensive and Comprehensible resource
Greg Smith has done a very good job of providing a comprehensive and comprehensible resource. While Greg's approach to parenting might sound autocratic to some parents, but the fact is that it is ultimately a parent'sresponsibility to protect his kid (not that school and society at large arenot responsible to protect our kids). While it educates technically non-savvy parents with the innards of the technology, it also provides a clear strategy to adopt the technical tools, corresponding to each age group. It is not a high level book, rather a hands-on approach book. He mentions many tools for monitoring, filtering and blocking purposes and one such tool is familyarmor.com.

Excellent Job!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of practical information
The Internet and Web have so much to offer for both adults and children.I use it everyday and my children are also online daily.I check the news, email, and do research.I even met my spouse online. Also, my kids play games, chat with friends and explore. It's a great learning tool and allows them some freedoms to explore their interests. However, as the Web and Internet continue to impact our lives, there are very real dangers that I want to know about so that I can be sure my kids are safe when they are online.

What Greg Smith has been able to provide in his book are the specifics of how you can take the necessary steps to make sure that the Internet and Web is a safe place for your kids. Many books and guides speak in terms of general rules and ideas, but what Mr. Smith provides is real details and tools that you can put into action. He identifies the risks and issues being exploited and provides the leading tools, his experiences, and recommendations to protect you and your children.Even experienced technology professionals will find the comprehensive list of tools and technologies in his book a huge help.I have been using the Internet and Web for a long time and there are several things in his book that I did not know about, and that I want to keep my kids from knowing about.

Excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Protect your children
Greg Smith has written an important book for parents. Using his experience as a senior IT leader and a parent, he lets parents know the risks of children being connected and how to protect them.

The author makes the reader aware of the many dangers of connected electronic devices, not only computers but also cell phones. At a very young age, children are using computers and the age when children have their own cell phones seems to creep down every year. Many parents are not as technically sophisticated as their children, especially parents of teenagers. He urges parents to take control by learning about technology, using the tools available to safeguard and monitor children's activities on-line, and talking with your kids. His easy to understand recommendations let parents know what they need to do, going as far as recommending specific products and providing "How-to" instructions, customized for the age of your child.

As Mr. Smith states in his book, "You're just two clicks away from just about anything."Make sure your children are safe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent road map for parents!
This book provides useful and easily understandable information for parents regarding protecting their children on the Internet. Even if you think your kids aren't using the Internet, they are. Statistics show that 96% of 13 yr olds use the Internet on a regular basis. So as parents, and as a teacher, it's important to know and understand how to keep your child safe.

I highly recommend this book for all parents. Even if you think your child is safe or that you know all there is to know, you can never be to safe when it comes to your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book goes into great detail of what you, as a parent, need to do to keep your kids safe on the Internet.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that has children on the Internet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taught me to collaborate with my kids on online safety
This book helped me form a blueprint for how I could monitor my 2 kids' computer use which I then presented to them. They participated on the plan by agreeing and disagreeing on it. So we have a collaboration that they both cooperate with. For me, just that they know they are being monitored keeps them safe, they watch out what they're into `coz mommy can see.

5-0 out of 5 stars specific guide on internet safety
The book is very detailed, providing a specific guide on forming an internet safety plan. I like it because it pointed me out to an important thing: that it's not doing the checking up behind his back but keeping upfront with him about why you need to do it and how you're going to go about it. It's about respecting his rights as a person---but a minor person who needs to be monitored just quite a bit yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Something you have to do for welfare's sake

Product Description
Many youth in the United States have fully integrated the Internet into their daily lives. For them, the Internet is a positive and powerful space for socializing, learning, and engaging in public life. Along with the positive aspects of Internet use come risks to safety, including the dangers of sexual solicitation, online harassment, and bullying, and exposure to problematic and illegal content. The Attorneys General Multi-State Working Group on Social Networking asked this Task Force to determine the extent to which today s technologies could help to address these online safety risks, with a primary focus on social network sites in the United States. To answer this question, the Task Force brought together leaders from Internet service providers, social network sites, academia, education, child safety and public policy advocacy organizations, and technology development. The Task Force consulted extensively with leading researchers in the field of youth online safety and with technology experts, and sought input from the public. The Task Force has produced three primary documents: (1) a Literature Review of relevant research in the field of youth online safety in the United States, which documents what is known and what remains to be studied about the issue; (2) a report from its Technology Advisory Board, reviewing the 40 technologies submitted to the Task Force; and (3) this Final Report, which summarizes the Task Force s work together, analyzes the previous documents as well as submissions by eight leading social network sites regarding their efforts to enhance safety for minors, and provides a series of recommendations for how to approach this issue going forward. Enhancing Child Safety and Online Technologies contains the Task Force s Final Report and appendices of the Literature Review and the Technology Advisory Board report. ... Read more

Antivirus, antispyware and firewall programs won't do you any good if you don't know how to protect your personal information and avoid exploitation; you can damage yourself more than any virus can. Criddle organizes her advice into 13 steps, and she provides helpful "think about it" and "find out more" boxes as well as real-life examples, images of Web pages, diagrams and sample forms. getAbstract recommends Criddle's advice if you blog, browse, send e-mail or instant messages, or play Internet games, either at home or at work - in other words, to just about anyone who'd rather be safe than sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A vital safety check-up for the whole family
Linda Criddle has written the definitive parents' guide to Internet safety. As the executive at Microsoft who is responsible for idenitfying emerging online risks to children, she looks at the situation through the eyes of an expert and a parent--and then re-examines the landscape from the perspective of a potential predator, exposing hidden vulnerabilities that put us at risk for exploitation.

Criddle's book is comprehensive and specific. She alerts us to the ways that we are exposing our personal information to the general public, including instances in which parents inadvertently give away identifying information about their children. She is knowledgeable about the way predators use the Internet to identify potential victims and groom them, keeping in mind that online as in "real life" a predator is most likely to be someone known to a child.

"Look Both Ways" is almost overwhelming in its comprehensive scope. The book covers the latest developments in blogging, instant messaging, and online dating safety, as well as fraud scenarios including financial scams and phishing.Linda Criddle has written an essential guide that will help families develop skills and sensible limits that will ensure that parents and kids have positive Internet experiences. This book is an eye-opener and a vital addition to every parent's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars many guidelines
Of the several books Roddel has written about the Internet, this appears to be the most extensive and advanced. Much of what is written is for the parents of children who might be at risk through various activities on the Internet. To a large extent, the contents include the material in her other books.

Some of the advice in this book might be problematic. For example, on page 33, it recommends that for children visiting chatrooms and using instant messaging, that they or you hide your IP address. This can depend on the chatroom or IM software. Fundamentally, you cannot hide the address, because this is needed for any two way interactions. (Unless you use an anonymiser, but that is another story.) Perhaps the chatroom software has an option so that your interlocutor cannot get the address. Which really only works when the software is running on some server computer, that both you and the other person are accessing. It is not guaranteed that the software will let you do this.

Elsewhere, she points out that usernames are descriptions. So that "they should not indicate your race, age or gender". [...].

The chapter on online fraud is best suited for an adult reader, who is more likely to have money to lose in such frauds. Most of the advice is valid. But occasionally a little too sweeping, as in "Legitimate charities do not solicit or advertise for donations through email". Not quite. A charity affiliated or run by a religious organisation might have a mailing list of co-religionists, and it could send out appeals for donations for various worthy and real causes. I think what the text is trying to say (or should say), is that real charities are unlikely to ask for donations via unsolicited email. In other words, there are two qualifications to the book's statement - "unlikely" and "unsolicited".

The book is lengthy enough to warrant an index. Unfortunately, that is lacking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Online Children Require Adequate Online Guidance!
One of the major strengths of the book is the author's discussion of how some of the more popular software programs available today are designed to block problem Websites and their indecent material. Although these programs do not assure 100% successful filtering, the author does rate them and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each one. The author correctly states that human oversight is always superior to filtering software. Therefore, parents, teachers, and others should always exercise adequate control over the child use of the Internet and the online services.

Another strength I found fascinating was the description of clever programming and marketing ploys used to gain the attention of those online. As the author points out, some people will use extremely clever means to ensnare children and adults alike. To his credit the author cites examples of other threats apart from sexually explicit material. He writes of twelve children who followed easy-to-follow instructions found on the Internet on how to build homemade grenades.A number of these children were badly hurt when their grenades exploded.Other children online have formed close intimate ties with others and have actually left home to meet their newly found "friends".

The author rounds out the book by offering an adequate glossary of terms, a list of safe Websites for kids, instructions for surfing the Internet, setting up and operating parental control software, and a very helpful guide to detect the presence of suggestive material. The book is footnoted to provide readers with documented sources.Readers should visit the Kidshield Website for updated and additional information.

The incidents cited in the book are reason enough to be on guard for the welfare of children today.Sadly, at present we cannot rely upon local, state, and federal governments to protect children from the exposure of negative influences that exist on the Internet, whatever they may be.We should take immediate a! ction to make such threats much less of a problem and burden. This book offers a thoughtful response to a problem every parent, teacher, and other concerned persons in this technological era should become familiar with.Get a firm grip on this problem before this problem gets a firm grip on your kids! ... 20. Understanding Aviation Safety Data: Using the Internet and Other Sources to Analyze Air Travel Risk

Isbn: 0768006023

Editorial Review

Product Description
Aviation safety is a subject of intense interest to the flying public and to those whose livelihoods depend on the air transportation industry. Round the clock television news channels and the rise of the World Wide Web as a communications medium has also led to unprecedented levels of media coverage of aviation safety issues, especially in the wake of a major airline accident. Partly in response this public interest, a number of government agencies and private organizations have used the World Wide Web to provide easy public access to vast amounts of aviation related information. However, much of it is unprocessed data concerning accidents and incidents, or background information about the air transportation system. While public access to this kind of data has never been greater, there has been little effort by the government or industry to provide the public with advice or guidance on how to comprehend or analyze this kind of data.

This book will fill part of that gap by providing the aviation professional and others interested in the analysis of aviation safety data with specific insights into how to systematically find, classify, and evaluate aviation data in order to answer specific questions about airline safety and operations. Using a combination of case studies and explicit step by step instructions, the reader will be provided with the following:

- An overview of fundamental concepts of risk and safety,
- An overview of how aviation safety data are collected and used for safety analysis,
- An overview of the role of the World Wide Web in providing access to aviation safety data,
- An overview of traditional sources of publicly accessible aviation safety data,
- A systematic processes for planning and executing aviation related data analyses,
- Examples of how that systematic process can be used to analyze aviation safety data from libraries, the World Wide Web, and other publicly accessible sources of data,
- Descriptions of sources of aviation safety data resources, and
- A glossary of aviation safety and Internet terms that are related to the analysis of aviation safety data.
This is a how-to book that will provide the reader with the basic tools necessary to ask specific aviation related questions and to find the relevant information needed to answer the question using the Internet, libraries, and other sources. The book will also provide an overview of some of the issues involved in analyzing aviation safety and operational data as well as a practical guide for using that information to answer specific questions about airline safety and airline operations. The advice, checklists, and analysis procedures described in the book rely on the use of reliable and authoritative aviation data commonly available through public libraries and some Web sites. Although the procedures and techniques described in the book are demonstrated using publicly available aviation data, they can also be applied to proprietary or other non-public aviation data.

The unique contribution of this book is that it provides insights and guidance that will allow an aviation professional or an interested lay person to combine information available through the World Wide Web with information from traditional sources of aviation data in order to address specific aviation safety questions. The book also provides the reader with detailed instructions on how to apply a systematic method for the entire process of planning and executing an analysis related to an aviation safety question. ...
