Product Description
Trade and the environment issues have engaged powerful non-governmental organizations in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. Environmentalists and labor union leaders have been concerned that falling international trade barriers, along with international trade organizations associated with free trade, are undermining environmental protection. In contrast, business leaders and developing-country governments have been concerned that purported environmental regulations may be used as disguised barriers to trade. Those with competing perspectives on these issues have clashed in scholarly journals, the editorial pages of leading newspapers, the halls of government-and in the streets. This is the first book that systematically compares how each of the world's major international trade organizations has been addressing environmental issues. It provides background, up-to-date information, and analysis on the development of trade-environment rules in the World Trade Organization, the European Union, the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Free Trade Area of the Americas, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, the International Organization for Standardization, and other key organizations. All of the essays are both policy-oriented and conscious of their theoretical underpinnings. Together they offer a range of realist, liberal, and institutionalist perspectives. The book concludes by suggesting that the treatment of environmental issues in international trade organizations is best explained by understanding the trade and environment interests of the world's most powerful countries. ... Product Description
The WTO is one of the most important intergovernmental organizations in the world, yet the way in which it functions as an organization and the scope of its authority and power are still poorly understood. This comprehensively updated new edition of the acclaimed book by an outstanding team of WTO law specialists, provides a complete overview of the law and practice of the WTO. The authors explain the origins and development, via the GATT, of all of the substantive legal areas covered by the WTO, as well as the sources of law and remedies of the Dispute Settlement system. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good International Trade Textbook
This book is a useful text for those who are interested in learning about the law of the World Trade Organisation. I would have given it a 3.5 rating rather than 3 if that were possible. This edition also reflects the more recent developments in WTO case law etc and is therefore useful as a textbook for those teaching international trade law. However, I found the policy analysis a little lacking or at least that it did not accurately reflect the diversity of views on some of the critical issue/challenges facing the WTO and its agenda. ... Product Description
Debate about trade and culture has a long history, but the application of WTO rules to cultural products such as films, radio, and books remains one of the most divisive issues in the organization. After assessing the economic and social arguments for treating cultural products differently from things like steel or wheat, this 2007 book explains how the vastly different views of WTO members in earlier negotiations led to an outcome that is disappointing for all. It goes on to provide a comprehensive evaluation of possible solutions, including evolution of the law through WTO dispute settlement, an agreement outside the WTO, and reforms to improve the balance between trade liberalization and cultural policy objectives. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "World Trade Organization," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have World Trade Organization in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with World Trade Organization when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name World Trade Organization, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
As the leading student text in the field, this title provides both a detailed examination of the law of the World Trade Organization and a clear introduction to the basic principles and underlying logic of the world trading system. It explores the institutional aspects of the WTO together with the substantive law. New to this edition are examinations of the WTO rules on the protection of intellectual property and the rules on technical barriers to trade and sanitary and phytosanitary measures. Assignments are integrated throughout to allow students to assess their understanding, while chapter summaries reinforce learning. In addition further-reading sections have been added to each chapter and exercises have been included to draw on primary sources and real-life trade scenarios, enabling students to hone their practical and analytical skills. The title is an essential tool for any student of the WTO, either at undergraduate or postgraduate level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for students of WTO Law.
Van den Bosschle's textbook "Law and Policty of the WTO" is a wonderful textbook on WTO Law and Policy. He writes on all aspects of WTO Law and Practice. As a textbook, it is obviously basic and assumes a relatively elementary level of prior knowledge. The book is already quite large, but at times I have felt like it's coverage lacks certain information that I think that students could use.For example, I was unable to find any defintion or comment on the meaning of the term "general infrastructure" as used in the SCM agreement. But of course, this is relatively trivial. As as a book published in 2008, it is relatively up to date.Even if you are taking a course on International Trade that uses another textbook, I highly recommend that you purchase or use this book as a supplement. In my view, it's the best out there. ... Product Description

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is one of the most important international organizations in existence today. It contains a set of disciplines that affect the ability of governments to impose trade restrictions, and has helped to support the steady expansion of international trade since the 1950s. It is a unique organization in providing a framework for member states to make binding policy commitments that are enforced through a unique dispute settlement system and a variety of transparency mechanisms.

Despite – or because of – its success, the WTO has recently become the focus of vociferous protests by anti-globalization activists. This book separates the facts from the propaganda and provides an accessible overview of the WTO's history, structure and policies as well as a discussion of the future of the organization. It also confronts the criticisms of the WTO and assesses their validity.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book addresses how international organizations with a global reach, such as the UN and the WTO, have changed the mechanisms and reasoning behind the making, implementation, and enforcement of international law. Alvarez argues that existing descriptions of international law and international organizations do not do justice to the complex changes resulting from the increased importance of these institutions after World War II, and especially from changes after the end of the Cold War. In particular, this book examines the impact of the institutions on international law through the day to day application and interpretation of institutional law, the making of multilateral treaties, and the decisions of a proliferating number of institutionalized dispute settlers.

Product Description
As far back as Ricardo's principle of comparative advantage-- from which all trade liberalisation theory ultimately derives-- it has been customary to treat agriculture as the generalexception to trade rules. To this day, nations protect theiragricultural trade in a variety of ways: through the limitedquantitative restrictions and export quotas permitted under prevailingtrade rules, through country-specific derogation in the form ofwaivers, or even through blatant violations of the General Agreementon Tariffs and Trade (GATT). In fact, despite the general dramaticdecline in tariffs in recent decades, the level of effectiveprotection against the flow of agricultural trade has been steadilyrising, almost entirely at the behest of developed countries and tothe detriment of developing countries. This new book analyses the current realities and future prospects forglobal trade in agricultural products. It seeks to explain the real orapparent rationale behind the virtual exemption of agricultural tradefrom the operation of the law governing international trade ingeneral, focusing on the GATT/WTO system but examining a variety ofnation-source policy reasons that generate this crucialcounter-current to the general sweep of trade liberalisation. Theissues and topics that arise in the course of the discussion includethe following:+the "tariffication" ofnon-tariff barriers under the Agriculture Agreement;+exportsubsidies under the Agreement on Subsidies and CountervailingMeasures;+remedies available against prohibited subsidies; +relevant WTO cases, especially FSC and Canada Dairy, as well asearlier GATT jurisprudence;+"downstream flexibility"exceptions;+the concept of "domestic support";+methodsused to reduce Aggregate Measurement of Support (AMS); and,+ relevant non-trade concerns, e.g., environment, poverty alleviation, food safety, and animal welfare. All professionals interested in the effective and equitabledevelopment of international trade, as well as officials involved intrade or agricultural regulation at any administrative level, willfind both informed insight into present and future concerns andrealistic assessment of a critical area of global policy in thisremarkable book. ... Product Description
This volume discusses the institutions of the WTO, the global forum for trade liberalization. Beyond multilateral liberalization, the WTO disciplines regional trade integration (such as EU, and NAFTA). The WTO now covers not only trade in goods and services, but also provides disciplines regarding protection of intellectual property rights that 153 states must observe. It further includes a unique dispute settlement system, the only forum for compulsory third party adjudication across states. Besides discussing the legal regime, the book discusses the economic rationale for the various WTO institutions, as well as the manner in which WTO law is received in key jurisdictions. ...
