They are here given as they have been arranged by Walter K. Siders for use in the Pocatello Schools).F1KST GRAUK.For the first school year, successful language work depends upon a skillful, inventive, sympathetic teacher, rather than on text books. The tools for the first year are the blackboard, the slate, the chart, and the first reader.From the very first, induce the children to talk, using full statements. Frame the questions so that the pupil must use sentences in answering. Talk about things that interest them, such as animals, trees, plants, games, etc. Correct errors of speech, use positive and not negative correction. Never place incorrect forms before the pupils. Tell short, easy stories and have them reproduce them orally. As soon as the pupils begin to read from the book, have them tell what they read. Do not put language into their mouths, but lead them to use their own words.First Month.Lead the pupils to talk freely and at ease. Have pictures and objects of interest for conversational lessons.
