Product Description
This book is the product of a multi-year dialogue between leading human rightstheorists and high-level representatives of international human rights NGOs(INGOs). It is divided into three parts that reflect the major ethicalchallenges discussed at the workshops: the ethical challenges associated withinteraction between relatively rich and powerful northern-based human rightsINGOs and recipients of their aid in the South; whether and how to collaboratewith governments that place severe restrictions on the activities of humanrights INGOs; and the tension between expanding the organization's mandate toaddress more fundamental social and economic problems and restricting it for thesake of focusing on more immediate and clearly identifiable violations of civiland political rights. Each section contains contributions by both theorists andpractitioners of human rights. ... Read more

43. Non-State Actor Dynamics in International Law

Product Description
Non-state actors have always been treated with ambivalence in the works of international law. While their empirical existence is widely acknowledged and their impact and influence uncontested, non-state actors are still not in the centre of international legal research. The idea that non-state actors are not law-makers, however, stands in sharp contrast with the growing notion of non-state actors as law-takers. This book examines the position of non-state actors in international law as law-makers and law-takers and questions whether these different positions can or should be separated from each other. Each contribution reveals both the political and normative aspects of the question as well as the positivistic possibilities and constraints to accommodate non-state actors as law-takers and law-makers in the contemporary international legal system. Altogether, each expert reveals that the position of non-state actors in international law is not a fixed one but changes with the functional and theoretical perspectives of the observer. "Non-State Actor Dynamics in International Law" is a welcomed addition to an under researched field of legal study. An indispensable read to scholars and policy makers wishing to gain new insights into general discourse on non-state actors in international law and the process of norm formation in the international realm. ... Product Description

Collective action through organized social movements has long expanded American citizens’ rights and liberties. Recently, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) has helped win living wage initiatives in more than 130 cities across the country. Likewise, congregation-based groups have established countless health, education, and other social programs at city and state levels. Despite modest budgets, these organizations—different in their approach, but at the same time working for social change—have won billions of dollars in redistributive programs.

Looking closely at this phenomenon, Heidi J. Swarts explores activist groups’ cultural, organizational, and political strategies. Focusing on ACORN chapters and church federations in St. Louis, Missouri, and San Jose, California, Swarts demonstrates that congregation-based organizing has developed an innovative cultural strategy, combining democratic deliberation and leadership development to produce a “culture of commitment” among its cross-class, multiracial membership.  By contrast, ACORN’s more homogeneous low-income class base has a national structure that allows it to coordinate campaigns quickly, and its seasoned staff excels in tactical innovations. By making these often-invisible grassroots organizers evident, Swarts sheds light on factors that constrain or enable other social movements in the United States.

Heidi J. Swarts is assistant professor of political science at Rutgers University.

Product Description

As the preeminent international development agency for the past sixty years, the World Bank has attracted equal amounts of criticism and praise. Critics are especially quick to decry the World Bank's hypocrisy--the pervasive gaps between the organization's talk, decisions, and actions. In the wake of the Paul Wolfowitz leadership scandal in May 2006, perceptions of hypocrisy have exacted a heavy toll on the Bank's authority and fueled strong demands for wide-scale reform. Yet what exactly does the hypocrisy of the World Bank look like, and what or who causes it? In Hypocrisy Trap, Catherine Weaver explores how the characteristics of change in a complex international organization make hypocrisy difficult to resolve, especially after its exposure becomes a critical threat to the organization's legitimacy and survival.

Using a rich sociological model and several years of field research, Weaver delves into the political and cultural worlds within and outside of the Bank to uncover the tensions that incite and perpetuate organized hypocrisy. She examines the sources and dynamics of hypocrisy in the critical cases of the Bank's governance and anticorruption agenda, and its recent Strategic Compact reorganization. The first book to unravel the puzzle of organized hypocrisy in relation to reform at the World Bank, Hypocrisy Trap ultimately enriches our understanding of culture, behavior, and change in international organizations.

Product Description

Since they were pioneered in the 1970s by Robert Keohane and others, the broad range of neoliberal institutionalist theories of international relations have grown in importance. In an increasingly globalized world, the realist and neorealist focus on states, military power, conflict, and anarchy has more and more given way to a recognition of the importance of nonstate actors, nonmilitary forms of power, interdependence, international institutions, and cooperation. Drawing together a group of leading international relations theorists, this book explores the frontiers of new research on the role of such forces in world politics.

The topics explored in these chapters include the uneven role of peacekeepers in civil wars, the success of human rights treaties in promoting women's rights, the disproportionate power of developing countries in international environmental policy negotiations, and the prospects for Asian regional cooperation. While all of the chapters demonstrate the empirical and theoretical vitality of liberal and institutionalist theories, they also highlight weaknesses that should drive future research and influence the reform of foreign policy and international organizations.

In addition to the editors, the contributors are Vinod Aggarawal, Jonathan Aronson, Elizabeth DeSombre, Page Fortna, Michael Gilligan, Lisa Martin, Timothy McKeown, Ronald Mitchell, Layna Mosley, Beth Simmons, Randall Stone, and Ann Tickner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great historical must have
I found the NAACP Celebrating a Century precious to me, because to our family's surprise we saw our great-grand mother in one of the photos from the early 1900's.I was also reminded of important events in the struggle for equality for the African-American that the years had diminished.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars inspirational
The photographs in this book enables the reader to become acquainted with and mindful of the historical journey of race relations and efforts for equality in this country. The pictures were gripping and painful to view yet inspirational for they also showed how far we have come as a society. Not only is this book good for the coffee table but for the classroom, libraries and any other arena where history lessons can be learned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good history lesson

Product Description
Accountability is seen as an essential feature of governments, businesses and NGOs. This volume treats it as a socially constructed means of control that can be used by the weak as well as the powerful. It contributes analytical depth to the diverse debates on accountability in modern organizations by exploring its nature, forms and impacts in civil society organizations, public and inter-governmental agencies and private corporations. The contributors draw from a range of disciplines to demonstrate the inadequacy of modern rationalist prescriptions for establishing and monitoring accountability standards, arguing that accountability frameworks attached to principal-agent logics and applied universally across cultures typically fail to achieve their objectives. By examining a diverse range of empirical examples and case studies, this book underscores the importance of grounding accountability procedures and standards in the divergent cultural, social and political settings in which they operate. ... How do a few Third World political movements become global causes celebres, while most remain isolated? This book rejects dominant views that needy groups readily gain help from selfless nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Instead, they face a Darwinian struggle for scarce resources where support goes to the savviest, not the neediest. Examining Mexico's Zapatista rebels and Nigeria's Ogoni ethnic group, the book draws critical conclusions about social movements, NGOs, and "global civil society". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book
Clifford Bob's The Marketing Rebellion is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the NGO sector operates. The literature on NGOs is not a particularly sophisticated one, heavily populated with self-serving and unenlightening tomes.

Bob examines the nexus between third world insurgencies and international NGOs and comes to some interesting findings.

5-0 out of 5 stars United Nation's Basic Facts
I received the book in good condition and far ahead of delivery schedule. I was really impressed on how soon the book was delivered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful overview of the UN
This is a fairly quick read that covers the major details of the UN. It talks about hot it was founded, the departments, major policy changes and decisions, and the role it took in world affairs before the new millennium. It does feel a bit dated at this point, as it was written pre 9-11 and has not been updated. Still, it is a useful introduction to the UN and worth a read if that topic interests you and you have little to no other exposure. Not recommended for anyone already a student of International Relations. The key word in the title is "Basic."

2-0 out of 5 stars Just the basics, nothing more
The title of this book is very accurate. If you buy it you will learn just a few basic things about the UN, and its various departments and that's pretty much it...

3-0 out of 5 stars A Major Undertaking by Mrs. Roosevelt.
The UN founded after the end of WWII is the most important global organization, with fifty-one members in 1945, formed to protect and promote national interests. It had grown to 185 members in 1999.Others like OPEC, NAFTA, NATO, UNESCO, sprang from the original United Nations.

UN's purpose was to promote international peach, security and cooperation among states (as the colonies in Africa, South Africa, other small countried reached state status) and to protect human rights.

Cordell Hull from Tennessee was the pivotal person in charge, wtih Alger Hill close behind.First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt played a major role representing her husband; Gladys Irwin also was a delegate while her husband was a federal judge.I knew there was a Cordell Hull Dam near Nashville, but she showed her pride in working with "your" Cordell Hull.At CWU meetings, she told all newcomers how much it meant to her.

Based in New York City, the headquarters are something to see.It is taller than the World Trade Center was.Except for Switzerland, all states on Earth are members of the UN Interpol, the Inernational Criminal Police Organization. It is truly a globel membership, thanks to the iniative and hard work of Mrs. Roosevelt.Stephen Schlesinger worked at the U. N. in the mid-1990s and relates in his book, "Act of Creation," that Franklin D. Roosevelt had the desire to become the Secretary-General of the UN and would have resigned his presidency to do so at the San Francisco Conference. On April 12, just 13 days before the Conference, FDR died.It fell to Harry Truman to address the UN Conference on opening day.

Alger Hiss was the acting SG and shared the platform with Earl Warren, then Governor of California. The four freedoms espoused were from want and fear, of speech and worship.Archibald MacLeish served as advisor to the U.S. delegation. He and his aide, Adlai Stevenson, dispensed information about UN in radio broadcasts, speeches, forums and meetings (also lectures for NBC radio).Stevenson, from Chicago, was the grandson of Grover Cleveland's Vice President and worked in the State Department.Later, he would run for the President of the United States.

The UN replaced the League of Nations.Roosevelt convinced Winston Churchill the name should be "United Nations."The UN Declaration was signed by representatives from twenty-six nations. The SG had more power than the League whcih was mostly clerical and administrative.Hehad to be a linguist to speak the language of the various nations.

One of the best known Secretary Generals was the legenday Dag Hammamskjold from Sweden who served from 1953-1961.In Linda Fasulo's "An Insider's Guide to the UN" is a photo of Eleanor Roosevelt holding the Universal Declaration of Rights poster in November, 1949, which was replaced later by the Universal Declaration's International Bill of Rights.Dag Hammarskjold died in a plane crash and a beautiful stained glass window by Marc Chagall is at the UN in his memory. At the headquarters in Manhattan, flags of all the members fly from 48th Street to 42nd (191 arranged alphabetically like a grand boulevard).

For twenty years, the unwritten agreement had been tha tthe SG should rotate among regions of the world.Seven have served: Norway, Sweden, Burma, Austria, Peru, Egypt, and Ghana.Fasulo was UN corrospondent and had a weekly NPR report. She explores the founding of UNESCO (UN Educational, Scienfitic, and Cultural Organization) a failure because of favoritism, nepotism, corruption and poor management, like Knox County government's appointing twelve commissioners instead of a special election. On the other side, UNICEF (UN Children's Fund) has lasted and served its purpose successfully.Bureaucracy abounds as in any organization, but the peacekeeping operations supersede all criticism.Different cultures, different opinions. What is good for some is bad for others. You can't please all the people all the time. It's good to remember that manners reflect one's self.

Product Description
When we think of women's activism in America, figures such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan invariably come to mind--those liberal doyennes who have fought for years to chip away at patriarchy and achieve gender equality. But women's interests are not synonymous with organizations like NOW anymore. As Ronnee Schreiber shows, the conservative ascendancy that began in the Reagan era has been accompanied by the emergence of a broad-based conservative women's movement. And while firebrands like Ann Coulter and Phyllis Schlafly may be the public face of rightwing women's activism, a handful of large and established women's organizations have proven to be the most effective promoters of the conservative agenda.

Righting Feminism shows that one of the key--albeit overlooked--developments in political activism since the 1980s has been the emergence of conservative women's organizations. It focuses on the most prominent of these groups, Concerned Women for America and the Independent Women's Forum, to reveal how they are using feminist rhetoric for conservative ends: outlawing abortion, restricting pornography, and bolstering the traditional family. But ironically, these organizations face a paradox: to combat the legacy of feminism--particularly its appeal to the majority of American women--they must use the rhetoric of women's empowerment. Indeed, Schreiber amply illustrates how conservative activists are often the beneficiaries of the very feminist politics they oppose. Yet just as importantly, she demolishes two widely believed truisms: that conservatism holds no appeal to women and that modern conservatism is hostile to the very notion of women's activism.

Based on numerous interviews with colorful conservative activists and extensive analyses of organizational documents, Righting Feminism offers a new way of understanding the unlikely intersection of women's activism and conservative politics in America today. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Food for Thought
Following Sarah Palin's campaign, the right began talking publically about 'sexism' and 'gender bias', leading the media to wonder if they had discovered the gender gap years after their colleagues on the left.

But this book makes it clear that two organizations remain relevant in the 21st century.

This is ironically possible because as opposed to attacking 'the feminists' outright, they shrewdly adapted and repacked selected feminist movement victories and/or goals in camouflage. The repackaging of feminist goals IS acceptable to their audiences and/or the communities which they live in.

So the women (and men) endorsing these organizations can be 'liberated' all without conveniently breaking the social and/or biblical confines of their communities. Through their proactively upping the ante with such debate terms, they then come back at us 'proving' that women do have it all. Therefore if other women are protesting outside of those boundaries, there must be something wrong with 'them' verus the society.

This book would be good for a political science and/or a women's studies class. I am concerned that only two organizations were profiled though. I think that there are additional like-minded organizations which would have provided sufficient information to further support the book thesis.

It's also a good read for grass roots activists, and anybody wanting to know the 'inside' scoop' on the success of the reccent anti-feminist organizations. Scheiber does not glorify the organizatons profiled, instead applying a welcomed critical eye. ... Read more
