Product Description
This is a comprehensive historical record of all free-ranging bird species known to be breeding in Georgia around the beginning of the new millennium. The atlas profiles 182 species, from the sociable House Wren to the secretive Black Rail; from the thriving Red-shouldered Hawk to the threatened Wilson's Plover. The atlas is the result of a systematic survey conducted from 1994 to 2001, the massive collaborative effort of several private organizations, public agencies, and many individuals. It offers a wealth of information critical to bird-conservation efforts and provides a baseline so that changes to species ranges, numbers, and other significant aspects of each species' status can be better understood.

Each species account includes a color photograph of the bird; information on the bird's habitat and life history, distribution, population trends, and conservation status (details discussed include diet, nesting habits, life cycle of the young, predators, and interactions with humans); color distribution map showing the state's six ecoregions and indicating possible, probable, and confirmed breeding; and graphs showing population trends.

Also included are chapters on the survey methodology, results of the surveys, influence of the physical environments of the state on bird distribution, changes in the avifauna since European settlement, and bird conservation. ... Read more

Product Description
Georgia Harkness (1891-1974) was a Methodist theologian and the first American woman to teach theology at the seminary level. A leader in the ecumenical movement, Harkness strove to make theology accessible to the laity.

This book is a compilation of writing from early in her career that appeared in publications such as The Christian Century, Religion in Life, and Christendom. Although her theology shifted somewhat during these years, Harkness held fast to her belief that liberal theology would remain "the basic American theology," a prediction that was out of step in the 1930s but is growing more credible today. ... Product Description
Here is a fascinating first-hand perspective of the dramatic changes that have occurred in academic library administration over the past five decades. In Leadership in Academic Libraries, distinguished directors of academic and research libraries pay tribute to W. Porter Kellam, Director Emeritus of the University of Georgia, by presenting an overview of the course of academic and research libraries over the span of his 50 year career. Administrative leaders in academic librarianship including Stuart Forth, Richard Chapin, Frank Grisham, and Ken Toombs offer a frank, perceptive, and witty account of the state of library leadership based upon many decades of accumulated experience and hard-earned knowledge.

Leadership in Academic Libraries provides valuable insights on library administration, and in particular, on the job of the library director. Readers interested in the history of academic libraries and library administration will gain new insight on the environment in which these leaders worked and how they dealt with university administration and changes in collection development. Chapters also provide advice on how library directors can keep their jobs, and the value of forming professional friendships. Other topics addressed include developments in academic and research libraries over the past five decades in library administration, library services, library architecture, and interlibrary cooperation. An enjoyable autobiographical essay by Mr. Kellam that recounts his long and distinguished career concludes this remarkable volume.

Library science students and professionals who wish to become more knowledgeable about the history of academic libraries will cherish the first-hand experiences of library leaders during the richest and most invigorating time in the history of American libraries. Academic librarians and library students researching the job of library director or the recent history of academic libraries will benefit from the experience and wisdom of these leaders in the areas of administration, library architecture, automation, and library cooperation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pieces of Georgia great book review!
The realistic-fiction book, Pieces of Georgia by Jen Bryant, follows the life of a 13 year old girl named Georgia whose artistic mother passed away 6 years ago. From this passing Georgia's father rarely talks to her because everything about Georgia reminds him of his wife, and he doesn't like remembering her because he loved her so much that the thought of her makes him upset. Georgia just started the 7th grade but is so shy and quiet that her teachers begin to worry about her and place her on an "At Risk List." This means that she has to go a counselor everyday to talk about the difficulty and hardships of her mother passing. The counselor, Mrs. Yocum, a caring young woman who tries to search deep in the child she is helping, gives Georgia a notebook. By giving Georgia this notebook, Georgia can say anything and everything to her mother as if her mother was still alive. One day Georgia joined the art class at her school, but she didn't tell her father because she knew it would distant their relationship even more. Miss B, Georgia's art teacher, decided to enroll her in an advanced art school. The only problem is Georgia doesn't know how to tell her dad because she knows he will get very angry, and she's trying to work on her relationship. Will Georgia ever fix her relationship? Will she get to go to the advanced art classes? These questions will be answered in this fascinating book.

In this story the three main characters are Georgia, Miss B, and Georgia's father. Georgia is a shy, timid girl that didn't like to express her feelings to anybody, so she turned to art. I thought of Georgia as a smart young girl who wasn't very social after her mother passed. Miss B on the other hand is a very bright outgoing art teacher. Miss B sees a lot of potential in Georgia but only wishes she would express it more. I thought of Miss. B as, a lad back teacher that wanted the best for her students but tried to help them students figure out their own mistakes. Finally there's Georgia's father a miserable man who is lost in this world without his wife. I thought of Georgia's father as a loving man but didn't want to show his love because he was to hurt on the inside. These characters are just one of the many reasons why you won't want to put this book down.

My opinion of this book was very intriguing. It kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting more. I thought the plot of the story was very exciting but sad at the same time. I would recommend this book to those who find realistic-fiction books interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I literally read this book in one day. Written in a free-style poem form, I found it was extremely easy to zip through the storyline and characters of this book. Although "Pieces of Georgia" wasn't the kind of story that gnaws at your mind like a good one does (even after you are finished with it), it was still a novel that made you think about your life and how it related to Georgia's. I would recommend anyone to buy this book, and I truly believe the moral is even greater than the price! :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice story...
I'm a teacher and I read this book for possible classroom use. It's a nice story - kind of sad and kind of sweet.I nice tie-in to any of the Wyeth artists and over-scheduled kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stanzalicious
I saw this book in my library's new release section and was attracted to it because of the form of writing-- it's in stanzas.

Because of how it's written, it's a pretty quick read, but it's most def. worth it. It's a really cute story with elements not atypical to a preteen/teenage novel, but (refreshingly) not filled with too many cliches or drama.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Quick Read
I bought this book for my 11-year-old daughter whose friend's mother died unexpectedly recently.(It covers this topic). It is a great book and very touching. She is a high achieving reading, however, and she finished the book in under an hour.So its not a week long read for a child of this age by any means.I loved the book itself though.I had gone to a large chain bookstore to purchase the book and it was listed at $16 or $17, and I could see that it would be a quick read for her, so I was really happy to find it on Amazon at the low price. It was totally worth the purchase at that price. ...
