4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Secondary Source for White Churches
J. C. Flanigan did an excellent job when he compiled this book on the churches of Gwinnett County in 1911.He included every church that was in the county at the time. However, the county has changed much since thetime this book was written and the number of churches in the county areinumerable. This book needs to be majorly updated in a second edition by another author.I have also, however, caught a few mistakes concerningdates on certain churches that and pastors. This book is still very goodand contains some very interesting sketches on the churches. It evenincludes some pictures of churches and ministers and prominent laymen.Itis intersting to see how the First Baptist Church of Lawrenceville or Snellville looked a hundred years ago and see how they have changedSO much today.
One major complaint I do have about this book is that it claims to be a history of every church in Gwinnett County as well as biographies of several ministers. This book does not contain histories of any of the African-American churches of the county or any of the black ministers. This may lead some to believe that there there were no black churches in Gwinnett County prior to 1911, which of course is not the case. This aspect of the book makes it a product of its time and sheds some light on the attitude prevalent in the early twentieth century.

5-0 out of 5 stars History/members of Gwinnett Co GA Churches in 1911.
This book is no longer on the list of scarce books on the history of Gwinnett Co GA.Now, reprinted, all the information on the founding of Gwinnett Co GAs early churches, is available once again. And, if you arelucky to have had an ancestor who was a minister, you may find a biography, with information previously unknown to you.One hundred copies sold infirst 45 days. ... Excerpt: The Tabernacle -The building is nearly a century old and has a varied history. Dr. Len G. Broughton was recruited from Virginia to become pastor of Third Baptist Church in Atlanta in March of 1898. Within a year he had founded a new Baptist Tabernacle church on the southwest corner of Luckie and Harris streets (now the middle of Centennial Olympic Park). Rev. Broughton was closely associated with the church in its early years, leading the local press to refer to it as "Broughton's Tabernacle," though this was never the official name of the church or any of its buildings. The new church was quite successful and had to be expanded several times to accommodate growth. The cornerstone of the building, placed March 1910.Seeing need for further growth, Broughton sought another location closer to the center of town, which led to the current property on Luckie St. However his Board of Deacons found the price too high and declined to buy it. As a result Broughton himself and a few of his deacons bought the property on July 7, 1906 and gave it to the church. The Atlanta Constitution reported the $52,000 transaction on ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=622195 ... Read more

Product Description

Attempting to restore subtlety and nuance to the study of southern religion, The Sacred Flame of Love ranges across the entire nineteenth century to chronicle the evolution of the institutions, theology, and social attitudes of Georgia Methodists in light of such phenomena, trends, and events as slavery, class prejudice, republicanism, population growth, economic development, sectional politics, war, emancipation, and urban growth.

In connecting Methodist history with the larger social transformation of nineteenth-century Georgia, Christopher H. Owen uncovers a story of considerable complexity and variety. Because Georgia Methodists included people from every social class, few generalizations apply properly to all of them. For many years they were loosely united by common adherence to the ideals of Wesleyan evangelicalism, but economic and political developments would gradually accentuate Methodist social divisions and weaken even this bond. Indeed, deviating far from the conception of unchanging and asocial southern religion often held by scholars, Owen sees both church and society undergoing enormous change in the nineteenth century.
