PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION THE researches in physical chemistry which have been prosecuted with great eagerness during the last two decades have led to results whereby many of the problems of exact science which had remained unsolved have been answered. For instance, a deeper insight has been obtained into the nature of solutions, by the work of vant Hoff, who has shown that the law of Avogadro, which had been applied only to gases, holds good also for substances in solution. This result has been of especial importance to electro-chemistry, although at first sight it appears to have no connection with that subject. It may be affirmed to-day that the conduction of the galvanic current in electrolytes, as well as the origin of the current in galvanic cells, matters which had been discussed for a century, have been explained. The science of electro-chemistry is set forth in detail in researches published in various journals,and in the text-booksof physical chemistry of Ostwald and Nernst. Nevertheless I have undertaken to write this short book, because I thought the time to be opportune for bringing together the new results in a condensed form, and for giving a short survey to those who are not in a position to make an exhaustive study of the voluminous literature of the subject for them- selves. In order to make the theories, which are difficult in themselves, more easily intelligible to the reader, who is assumed not to have more than a knowledge of the funda- mental conceptions of physics and chemistry, the various laws have been deduced directly from the experimental results. Mathematical discussions have been introduced for the purpose of more complete confirmation only in a very few cases. The experiments which form an essential part of this book are carried out with the simplest possible apparatus. They are arranged to make the process that is under consideration clearly intelligible, and also to ensure the attainment of the final result in as short a time as possible. For this reason they may be made especially useful for teaching, and also for becoming practically acquainted with the physical and chemical properties of various substances. It is true that very accurate results are not to be ex- pected in the experiments wherein measurements are made for more delicate instruments, such as are to be found only in scientific laboratories, are required in order to obtain accurate numerical results but, at the same time, Much of the apparatus may be prepared by the student himself. The rest can be obtained from Glass-blower Max Stuhl Berlin, N., Philipp- strassesuch instruments are not generally suitable for the pur- poses of demonstration. Although the main purpose of the book is to set forth the purely scientific aspects of electro-chemistry, the practical sides of the subject have not been left altogether unnoticed. The book presents the related theory and experiment. It proceeds to give for the first time the experimental methods to observe directly these inhomogeneities within the semiconductor. It analyses in detail the different ranges in which such inhomogeneities occur, when they are stationary and when not and what technical and device application result.

The accompanying film on the website demonstrates all related kinetic effects. Information on these effects was previously mostly available indirectly by interpretation of current-voltage characteristics, or by point contact probing along the surface, or by changes in the luminescence spectrum. The material is based on the original papers of the research team of the author, starting in the late 50’s and updated to incl. 2008.
