Product Description
Always harmful and potentially deadly, eating disorders can wreak havoc on families. Unfortunately, the same can often be said of their treatment: blaming parents for the illness, many eating disorder programs exclude parents and widen the rift in an already shattered family. This powerful and controversial book by top researchers James Lock and Daniel le Grange argues that parents are not the culprits but the key to their teen's recovery. Based on new research, Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder shows how parents can break the disorder's control over their child's mind and re-establish normal eating and family relations. The odds for full recovery drop precipitously if treatment is delayed. A radically important wake up call, this book urges parents to act now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must to go forwards to recovery
A must to get a better understanding of eating disorders, different possible treatments, and making them work for you. Please read the Maudlsey approach. This book should be complemented with "Eating with your anorexic" and "The parent's guide to eating disorders". Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential toolkit
This book is the authority and the toolkit for any family facing an eating disorder in a loved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great manual for use and resuse!!
Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder
My husband and I are faced with helping our child beat an eating disorder. This book describing family-based therapy has helped us help our daughter put on weight. The method described in the book is difficult to do and requires steadfast determination by the parents. It describes the symptoms and the treatments in current use in dealing with the problem. Our daughter was almost 19 when we started the process, and we feel her age makes it more difficult in light of the privacy laws and the determination by the medical community that 18 is the age of an adult. Even with that difficulty, I believe the outcome for her would be terribly difficult if not for the help we received from thisbook and from our therapist who used the metods described. I strongly recommend the book to those parents who are dealing with younger teenagers, although it is helpful to all parents. This book used in conjunction with a therapist who understands the method is the best approach to dealing with an eating disorder.

3-0 out of 5 stars From a parent of a child with an eating disorder
This is a good book if you want to educate yourself on Anorexia Nervosa and the various types of treatments. The authors fail to go into enough detail about the in hospitalization programs or the residential programs. It would have been helpful to include a list of important questions to ask when touring these facilities. Also, the family based method needed to be much more in depth. What to do when...., where should the family members sit in order to be the most effective, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Read
Anorexia is a life-threatening disease. It can also cause many long-term health problems. If your child has an eating disorder, it is very important to get professional help, quickly. This book stresses that fact.It is not a self-help book, but it does help one to understand the disease and the long road to recovery. It also includes a list of clinics that specialize in teenage eating disorders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect first step
Surviving an Eating Disorder, Strategies for Family and Friends is a poignant, insightful and sympathetic look into helping a loved one who is currently suffering or who has suffered from an eating disorder. Although the book focuses on the firsthand victims of the disorder it also offers advice to the "silent sufferers", the family and friends, in order to cope with the feelings of guilt and responsibility that inevitably occur. Opening the book with personal details from their lives give the authors more of an empathic feel rather than a medical one. You feel as though this is a close friend speaking to you, giving you knowledgeable insight into helping someone you care about regain control of their life, all the while aiding you in the understanding of what is truly going on and how you can be proactive in the journey to recovery. The many individual stories of patients brought a deep emotional connection to the book - it makes it much more real and much less lecture-based. It is impossible not to be emotionally touched by the subject matter, especially when it will hit so close to home for so many. Surviving an Eating Disorder, Strategies for Family and Friends is an amazing starting point to begin to help a loved one recover and to understand what we can control and accept what we cannot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for anyone who is an a relationship with someone who struggles with disordered eating
I am a psychotherapist who has been working for 30 years with families where disordered eating is an issue.I recommend "Surviving an Eating Disorder" to practically every family I see in order to help them develop strategies for addressing specific situations. This book is easy to understand, informative, and offers a tremendous amount of practical advice. It can serve as a guide to families who are attempting to negotiate their tricky realtional waters when someone they love is dealing with an eating disorder. Dewie Weiner, LICSW, ACSW

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and realistic
What I found refreshing about Surviving an Eating Disorder was the practical and realistic approach it took to treating an eating disorder. As an eating disorder specialist I found it to be extremely helpful. It is one of the few books on this topic that I am comfortable passing along to the families of my clients. There are not many eating disorder books that address the family's role in creating and battling an eating disorder like this one.Not only do I strongly recommend this informative book to clinicians, but to patients and families as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I got this book hoping that it would help us deal with our adult daughter's anorexia but it offered little in the way of advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Therapist's Response
Having received numerous calls from family members and friends of others struggling with eating disorders, I understand just how helpless people can feel when they want to begin to talk to and find help for those they care about. This book addresses these concerns in a thorough and straightforward way. Its authors, all skilled clinicians, bring both their expertise and compassion to an area in which meaningful dialogue is often difficult. They understand the importance of being able to recognize the early signs of an eating disorder and provide concrete guidance toward that end. Their sensitivity to both caregivers and prospective patients makes this book highly accessible and eminently useful to those on both sides of the problem. I have and will continue to recommend it with great confidence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book provides an excellent overview of many aspects of eating disorders and their treatment. Carolyn Costin is extremely insightful and knowledgable about the subject and she writes in a clear, accessible way.

The book also is full of case examples that demonstrate the theories/treatment interventions she talks about. These are usually brief and easy to understand. Both her understanding of eating disorders and the treatment interventions she uses are translateable and quite useful in the treatment of eating disordered patients. ... Read more

Acclaim for Peggy Claude-Pierre's
The Secret Language of Eating Disorders

"Peggy Claude-Pierre has gone beyond the surface of eating disorders to discover their true causes and then present a valid and healing path. In this extremely constructive book, she offers incredible insights into the mind of the sufferer and the myths of eating disorders."--Keith J. Karren, Ph.D.,
Department Chair, Health Sciences,
Brigham Young University

"Peggy Claude-Pierre is a warrior--ferocious and relentless--whose work has rescued a decade of sufferers."--Edward Feller, M.D., F.A.C.P.,
Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine,
Brown University School of Medicine

"Peggy Claude-Pierre has created a paradigm shift in the way we view and treat anorexia. Peggy has shifted the focus of care from that of controlling the symptoms of disordered eating to healing the negativity that would otherwise plague the individual for the rest of his or her life. I have developed the utmost respect for her, for I realize that she has translated the secret language of anorexia. Now it is up to us to use the knowledge she has revealed."
--Daniel J. Smith, M.D.

"Peggy Claude-Pierre's work begins where attachment to the limiting obstacles of theory end. She has brought back from the dead many young lives the world deemed hopeless. . . . There are many who possess the title of 'doctor' who have never come close to her incredible example of the selfless healer."

Chief, Division of Addiction Medicine,
Grant-Riverside Methodist HospitalAmazon.com Review
What makes Claude-Pierre's treatment of anorexia and bulimiarevolutionary? Perhaps it's that the astonishingly high success rateof even the most chronic cases at Claude-Pierre's Montreux Clinic(only sufferers near death who have not been helped by doctors andhospitals are admitted) defies the common misconception that eatingdisorders are incurable. Claude-Pierre has made a personal commitmentto dispel this damaging myth. Having cured her own two daughters ofanorexia, you might say hers was a vested interest. The SecretLanguage of Eating Disorders reveals the details ofClaude-Pierre's unique program.

Myths and misconceptions haveshaped conventional treatment of anorexia and bulimia, leading to acycle of hopelessness for those who suffer. Claude-Pierre's workreveals that victims share a common feeling of self-contempt. Further, she asserts that these overwhelming feelings of worthlessness areestablished at birth and slowly erode the healthy self. Therevolutionary aspect of Claude-Pierre's program stems from herconviction that this negative mindset can be completely reversed.

The book describes the five stages of recovery, discusses thechallenges peculiar to working with them at home, and presents a planfor working with health professionals. Also offered are stories offormer Montreux patients, adding insight and depth to understandingthese disorders. The book and the program have already saved manylives and will continue to do so. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some important info is missing, and she takes credit for discovering a classic concept
I found this book to be quite helpful in explaining the Negative and Actual minds of the ED sufferer. However, I also feel that Peggy takes credit for her dazzling discovery of what is actually a classic concept in psychology: cognitive self-talk. Her tendency to anthropomorphize this self-talk (complete with its own name, gender, personality, tactics, and rituals) doesn't make it any more innovative than what CBT therapists have always known: that sufferers of ED tend to negatively filter incoming stimuli and engage in exaggerated attacks against themselves using aggressive and cruel self-talk. Okay, so she's validated decades of research; where does that leave the reader?

Well, once Peggy has finished complimenting herself for this rediscovery, she makes an important contribution in her ability to EXPLAIN this conventional (and old chestnut) concept very, very clearly. For a lay-person looking to understand the role of self-talk and how to thwart it, Peggy's book may be the ticket: she didn't pioneer the concept, perhaps, but she illustrates it well. And she also does a remarkable job empowering families not to passively accept doom-and-gloom prognoses from jaded or unskilled doctors.

Having said that, here are some problems I see in her book:
1) She never even uses the word "Serotonin" in the entire book, despite mountains of emerging evidence that Anorectic sufferes have a very specific flaw in their serotonin system that causes a paradoxic "anxiety effect" with serotonin increases, causing the sufferer to starve down these levels.

2) The discussion of treatment is centered around children. She uses the noun "child" to describe her patients in treatment, which may alienate the reader who is concerned with an adult sufferer.

3) The discussion of treatment tends to be an infomercial for her center, which isn't very helpful to the reader because it costs $1000/day and has a fifteen-year waiting list, according to information online as of today (July 17, 2008).

4) She is experienced working with ED, but other than an early reference in the book to her intention of getting her Doctorate, she never returns to the topic of clinical qualifications--hers or her staff's--except to assure the reader that they are trained and competent.

5) Unless the family of an ED sufferer is prepared (and wealthy enough) to admit the victim to inpatient treatment for up to two years, there is little-to-no information about options for the rest of us. You know, the ones who make "regular" incomes. The ones who need to make efforts in outpatient settings. There is no advice, for example, to therapists (such as myself, an LCSW) who read the book about steps WE can take to implement strategies that work. The gist of her writing seems to be: Here are mistakes therapists and doctors tend to make, and this, therefore, is why my inpatient approach is pretty much your best hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You're Struggling and Need Help...
Are you seeking an answer?

Though this Book isn't a "cure all", it does answer some questions you may have. Questions such as:

"Why do I/my daughter/my son/my wife hate herself?"
"What can I do to help myself (or him/her)?"
"What have others done that may apply to me (or him/her)?"
"What methods/actions should I take to help my/their future?"
etc etc...

This book is pretty big (not huge) but it's pact full of useful information. Peggy even shares information of the many rehabilitation center's she has set up in and around the country and shares success stories of her own patients (without disclosing their names).

Having gone through this struggle myself in High School (when I bought the book), and even re-reading this book to date - it still sits on my shelf where it will remain because it IS useful. It does give life-changing information that WILL help you.

If you have a question about eating disorders, it has the answer. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Insightful
Working on recovery of my own, I found this book wonderfully validating and insightful.I never knew that others had the same thoughts that consumed my mind and not only did this book show me that others were out there, it showed me there were people in this world who not only understood those girls but who even loved those girls unconditionally.

Although unable to finish the book since I am unable to deem myself somehow worthy of ridding myself of this ED, I have shared it with those closest with me to try to help them understand where I am coming from and what I am struggling with.

I know others bash this author for not having formal training - but no matter what I say she has absolutly amazing insight into the Eating Didsordered mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars A friend to the isolated
I found this book a light in the dark.Claude-Pierre writes with extreme sensitivity and empathy on a killer disease which in fact kills because its victims are so sensitive. She manages to articulate on what others seem to miss i.e. that anorexia is not merely about feeling fat, or having a distorted body image but correctly identifies the 'other voice' as being the real poison within the sufferer. This book gave me the strength to get well and I know that other sufferers will find in it a source of real help and comfort.Words alone cannot praise this book enough.Suffers and non-sufferers alike must read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secrets Exposed
Author Claude-Pierre explains in layman's terms the mechanics of eating disorders. This greatly helped me to understand the mindset of the sufferer and seriousness of these types of disorders. The book offers a through explanation of symptoms, who is at risk, treatment, advice and support to family and friends of sufferers. In addition, there are some excellent references for reading materials and websites for help and support. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A straight-shooter!
I have struggled with a binge-eating disorder ever since my late teens. I wanted a book that was straight forward without candy-coated jargon, and this book is definitely the former!I was also looking for a book that might help support me in my recovery, and in finding a different approach(es) to my recovery. This book's got it! Also, I wanted more information that perhaps I didn't already know about this/my disorder, I wanted to be enlightened and inspired.Again, this book did not/does not disappoint!I highly recommend this book.If you are an anorexic, bulemic, havebinge-eating disorder (BED) or if you even think you might have 'disordered eating' (chances are, if you are an American female, you've got the latter!) be brave and read it. It WILL inform and inspire you!

5-0 out of 5 stars For Anyone with Weight Issues
I generally do not admit that I am obese and have been for most of my life nor do I write reviews.I do not think of myself as having an eating disorder as I am definitely not anorexic nor am I bulimic. However, I noticed that binge eating was included so I purchased this book.

Having read it from cover to cover, I would recommend it to anyone with weight issues. At a time when the news reinforces guilt in regards to obesity, this book does just the opposite. The author is compassionate and obviously knowledgeable. She examines the issues behind the eating (or non-eating) without blame and many of her points resonated for me.I was left feeling I could find an easier way to deal with life. That it would take work and committment but not dieting or will power.

It's been nearly two months since my first reading and I have found myself continuing to think about why I am eating and what I might do about why I am eating or, at least, instead of eating.I'd like to thank Susan Schulherr and let her know I'll be looking forward to another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
What a superb and greatly needed book this is !!Ms Schulherr has written a complete, comprehensive, thoughtful and incredibly well organized explanation and exploration of eating disorders. Her book is easy to read and anticipates every possible question one might have about all aspects of eating disorders.Although she is direct and does not soft pedal the facts, she also presents her information in a form that is digestable (no pun intended) and useable. The serious scholarship employed in writing this book is evident. Clearly, an enormous amount of research and experience went in to writing it.Yet, it is human and reassuring; you feel Ms Schulherr is holding your hand and walking you through your reading. This book is a must for anyone with concerns about eating disorders or who is concerned about someone who might be struggling with one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down-to-earth Wisdom on Eating Disorders
This book is not only filled with practical down-to-earth wisdom on steps to take if youor a loved one suffers from an eating disorder, but the author makes us smile and laugh in the process. For example, she compares the person with an eating disorder to a magician--"who gets us to look over here" (at the food behaviors and fixations) "when the real action is over there"(with the difficult emotions or life problems the ED person vainly attempts to soothe or solve with food). Or,"it takes a village to create and eating disorder"--the author's way of introducing us to the cultural forces encouraging women and more and more men to become thinner and thinner contributing to the rising toll of eating disorders. Or, "what happened to make us think being thin is naturally superior?"Great question!

The author helps us visualize recovery as a process of integratingbalanced eating without 'forbidden foods' or food restriction diets, attention to enjoyable exercise and your body's own set-point,and avoiding the mental minefield of thoughts like "everything will be better when I'm thin".She's not afraid to tell us thatwillpower "never works with eating disorder symptoms".

As a pychotherapist who often encounters eating issues in my practice,I wholeheartedly recommend Ms. Schulherr's book to anyone who wants to find hope for recovery from an eating disorder, and also to professionals in the field who would like a comprehensive guide to eating disorder symptoms, and treatment options.

Gail Woods LCSW, LMFT

This book provides the first comprehensive guide to the practice of "enhanced" cognitive behavior therapy (CBT-E), the latest version of the leading empirically supported treatment for eating disorders. Written with the practitioner in mind, the book demonstrates how this transdiagnostic approach can be used with the full range of eating disorders seen in clinical practice. Christopher Fairburn and colleagues describe in detail how to tailor CBT-E to the needs of individual patients, and how to adapt it for adolescents and patients who require hospitalization. Also addressed are frequently encountered co-occurring disorders and how to manage them. Reproducible appendices feature the Eating Disorder Examination interview and questionnaire.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting
I did enjoy this treatment manuals theory and practice. It should be noted that this book, in practice, is not for a diagnosis anorexia nervosa. It does have a plan for that diagnosis, but does not seem to have the evidence to back it up from the trials that have been conducted.I think in the future as evidence grows this could be a promising treatment for all eating disorders. It does have a very intrigueing way of conceptualizing eating disorders in general. It will be exciting to see how this model actually plays out in practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for EVERY woman!
Johanna writes about her struggles and how she taught herself to think differently. Every woman could learn from her experiences and the wisdom she shares for dealing with self image. Truly a life changing book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and inspirational
Reading this book felt very much like sitting down with a cup of tea and having a heart to heart with a close friend. A very caring and gentle one who understands thoughts and feelings you may have never felt brave enough to speak out loud and of which you may have even been ashamed at some point. Johanna's words had me smiling, laughing, and even crying at different points throughout the book. Her naturally warm tone and easy to understand language make it impossible not to relate to her experiences.

Johanna shares her personal story of living with and recovering from an eating disorder and offers thoughful and useful "tools" that she has developed throughout her journey as well as learned from others along the way. More than anything, I think this book is filled with invaluable insight pertaining to an experience we all share in which I plainly and simply call "life". Anyone who has struggled with issues relating to self-esteem, belonging, wanting to please others, never feeling good enough, all or nothing thinking, and many other characteristically human experiences will surely relate to Johanna's account.

Moreover, this book helps to remind you that you are not alone, no matter how lonely it might feel, and that there is hope! Hope that it is possible to let go of the need to control and to be perfect and that you will still be okay. Hope that you can genuinely learn and be comfortable with loving and taking care of yourself and live a life that is truly full and satisfying (though by no means perfect).
I believe listening to Johanna's story of recovery will be helpful to anyone, whether or not you have lived or are living with an eating disorder. I am happy that she has chosen to write this book and hope that many will benefit from her heartfelt words and wisdom. ... Read more

Product Description

The Parent's Guide to Eating Disorders shows that effective solutions begin at home and cost little more than a healthy investment of time, effort, and love. Based on exciting new research, it differs from similar books in several key ways. Instead of concentrating on the grim, expensive hospital stays of patients with severe disorders, the authors focus on the family, teaching parents how to examine and understand their family’s approach to food and body-image issues and its effect their child’s behavior. Parents learn to identify an eating disorder early, to establish healthy attitudes toward food at a young age, and to intervene in a nonthreatening, nonjudgmental way. The authors concentrate on teens, the age group most often affected by eating disorders, as well as younger children. Individual chapters cover boys at risk, relapse training, dealing with friends, school, and summer camp, and much more. The book includes an appendix and sections on further reading, organizations and websites, residential and hospital programs, and references.

This book is definitely a must, and compliments "Help your teenager beat an eating disorder", and "Eating with your anorexic".
The Maudsley approach is great.
This book reminds us not only of the Maudsley approach, but as well guides us in understanding it and including the whole family.
It helps us understand as well what has happened to the body of the anorexic child, and helps us learn about all the important aspects of nutrition, nutrients, and the body.

I found this book very helpful for both practitioners that work with patients struggling with an eating disorder and for parents of children with eating disorders. My previous exposure of Maudsley was a very hands on approach that parents may need to wear a "dictatorship" hat in the feeding. This book was nothing of the sort. The "New" Maudsley Method creatively weaved motivational interviewing and stage of readiness for change that results in an empowering role for the parent or other care giver. Thank you Jane Treasure et al for this book!

The book was very well written with good insights and practical suggestions on how best to support and interact with a loved one suffering from an eating disorder. Product Description
Living in a culture obsessed with body size and shape, it can be hard to feel good about the way you look. But eating disorders caused by unrealistic body image ideals create much larger problems--diminished self-confidence, unhealthy eating and exercising habits, and an inability to see yourself as a person rather than a number on the scale.

What's Eating You? takes aim at the motivations behind your relationship with food and helps you to better understand how your need to control what you eat can end up controlling you. As you complete the worksheets in What's Eating You, you'll learn more about the beliefs and experiences that contribute to your disorder. Each worksheet includes questions and exercises targeting the cultural myths, perfectionism, stress, and lack of self-confidence that are often at the heart of a dysfunctional relationship with food. Once these issues are addressed, you'll be able to gather the strength you need to make peace with your body, exude confidence, and live a healthy life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great "support system" book
I have found this book to be fairly helpful. Their are many different kinds of exercises and the book is easy to figure out so it's simple to flip through and pick and choose rather than having to read the whole book cover to cover. The only thing that is a little unfortunate is that their are activities for those who suffer from overeating as well as anorexia and/or bulimia. While I understand why they're all put together in one book, I personally can not relate to the activities which do not apply to my disorder and I just wish that it had been separated into two different books.
While I purchased this book because I have been diagnosed with an eating disorder, I can also see how it would almost be even more helpful for someone who hasn't been diagnosed because it helps to advise teens as to what kind of behavior is normal and can make someone aware of behavior which may be leading them towards a more serious problem.
Overall,I would say this is a worthwhile purchase.

Product Description

The true story of the 1986 U.S. National Gymnastics champion whose lifelong dream was to compete in the Olympics, until anorexia, injuries, and coaching abuses nearly destroyed her

Fanciful dreams of gold medals and Nadia Comaneci led Jennifer Sey to become a gymnast at the age of six. She was a natural at the sport, and her early success propelled her family to sacrifice everything to help her become, by age eleven, one of America’s elite, competing at prestigious events worldwide alongside such future gymnastics’ luminaries as Mary Lou Retton.

But as she set her sights higher and higher—the senior national team, the World Championships, the 1988 Olympics—Sey began to change, putting her needs, her health, and her well-being aside in the name of winning. And the adults in her life refused to notice her downward spiral.

In Chalked Up Sey reveals the tarnish behind her gold medals. A powerful portrait of intensity and drive, eating disorders and stage parents, abusive coaches and manipulative businessmen, denial and the seduction of success, it is the story of a young girl whose dreams would become eclipsed by the adults around her. As she recounts her experiences, Sey sheds light on the destructiveness of our winning-is-everything culture where underage and underweight girls are celebrated and on the need for balance in children’s lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste a penny on this drivel
This is a story of a spoiled brat who got everything she wanted, yet she wanted to blame everyone around her for her problems. This may be her story, but it is laced with perceptions and feelings that did not necessarily happen. She was obsessed with her weight when she was around 7 years old.Everything that she blames those around her in her life for doing, she did to herself.

She was never a very good gymnast and was lucky that the Nationals in 1986 was underattended. Also, she was lucky that many of the 1988 Olympians were juniors at the time she won this Nationals.

If you want to read about her taking laxatives and her messing her pants, this book is for you.But she should not be rewarded by someone paying for this ridiculous diatribe.

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm still reading... Two years later, lol!
I don't think this is the worst book ever, but the fact that I've not finished it in almost TWO years says a lot about the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passion, Skill, Brains and Balls
Thank you Jennifer Sey for finally saying what all of us knew but wouldn't say. The book doesn't lie. I was an Elite gymnast in the 80's and I know this book is true. I lived with my coach away from home and trained with some of the top Elites and Olympians in the country. I experienced the abuse (the word I would use for it) depicted in the book on a regular basis and witnessed many other girls experiencing the same. I did know that coaches threw things - mine did. I did know that coaches were verbally and physically abusive - mine was. I did know that some men who had never participated in the sport took up coaching to prey on young girls, trying to gain a sense of purpose and power - mine did. I did know that girls were told to lose weight by any means possible - and did. I also knew that nobody in my circle was aware enough, brave enough or cared enough to say it needed to stop. If the system was questioned, it was done in whispers, so as not to upset any possibility of reaching the ultimate goal...winning.

When I read the book description, I thought it might be an interesting read. What it ended up being was a no-holds-barred, cathartic journey, providing me with insight that no therapist could ever match. Sey's unabashedly raw and honest writing ripped open old wounds and gave a picture of what it looks like to heal. It takes truth to heal. Because she allows herself to be vulnerable yet still maintain the strength to write the actuality of what happened, we get a complete picture of her journey. I started crying in empathy when I read about the pain and anguish, and I ended weeping with the beauty of it all: the beauty of her life, her husband, her two boys, her career, her mended relationship with her parents. Those things only came about through the process of truth.

I was ready for this book. I am forty-four years old. While reading Chalked Up, I reached back into the depths of what drove me as a child and compared that to what drives me now as a woman, thirty years later. I am glad Jennifer Sey was that great a gymnast and did work that insanely hard because it gives her the extra clout needed to tell this story. Clearly, it takes the kind of passion, skill, brains and balls that got her ahead in gymnastics to write books like this one. Please keep them coming. I will be looking for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
This was a fantastic book, very well written and very honest. Loved every bit of it, could not put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad, but true.
Loved it. Sadly, it speaks true of the sport even today...not all coaches treat their gymnasts this way, of course. Coaches want it even more than the girls do sometimes...the better their gymnasts are=more $$$$$$ for them and their programs. It was very sad to read about all of Jennifers injuries, most of which could have been prevented if given proper time to heal from her previous ones...being forced into competition while severely injured ruined her Olympic dream. ... Product Description

This book is the first to address what really happens behind closed doors during eating disorders treatment, as most writing has only addressed theoretical approaches and behavioral strategies. The field has long needed a book that describes the heart of the matter: the therapeutic interventions and interactions that comprise life-changing treatment for this life-threatening disorder. In response to this need, the authors have created a book that reflects the individual therapeutic skills and the collective wisdom of senior clinicians, all of whom have years of experience treating anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Intended to be a deeply thoughtful and instructive volume, Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders: The Heart of the Matter demonstrates the depth, complexity, and impact of the therapeutic process. In particular, the book articulates and explores essential points of information, issues, insights and unresolved questions about eating disorders treatment. Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders describes and explicates important treatment issues and themes in a nuanced, highly contextualized and qualitative manner. The book offers a significant reference for both novice and seasoned therapists, and it includes specific information that will serve to inform and mentor future generations of eating disorders clinicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars great help!
When you are facing a difficult situation, it is good to have a friend. That was my feeling as I read this book -dealing with a serious health threat to my child left me feeling very alone and scared. This book was informative and gave me hope, helping me realize that eating disorders are treatable.I strongly recommend this book -while the entire book is quite eduational, you can skip around to find what you need. Well written in a "user friendly" tone, it has become a real "go to" reference book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should be titled "Does your child have an eating disorder"
I purchased this book hoping to get some information about how I can help my daughter with her eating disorder.About a third of the book is exercises to determine IF your child might have an eating disorder (and much of this is listing myths). Then it skips right into comparing different types of treatment.I found nothing in this book about how I could help my daughter after her diagnosis and between doctor/psychologist visits.I felt like I was reading a college textbook on Eating Disorders 101.As a parent of a child afflicted with anorexia, I did not find this book helpful.Perhaps it would be useful for someone who suspects his or her child has an eating disorder and wants more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and understandable
I am a MSW candidate at Simmons College with an extra interest in Eating Disorders.I have done a lot of research on the subject and have found this book to be the best I have seen recently. When Your Child has an Eating Disorder is comprehensive and concise. It is the most understandable book, laying out everything in a clear way.I find a lot of books written by therapists convoluted and over intellectualized to the point were one cannot tell what the topic is.

Both layman and professionals will be able to master more knowledge by reading this book than reading a dozen others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book for significant others and all loved ones
I'm a recovering individual. I'm sure this book is great for all loved ones, but I specifically tried to use it with my boyfriend. When there is a question in the book, such as "Should I confront my loved one when she/he is using symptoms?" the book offers a few suggestions, because no two individuals are alike. I highlighted the information that I wanted my boyfriend to take and turned over the corners on pages that were particularly important, to say, "You are not doing this and it's super important that you do!". Some of the great advice that I can remember is that you can confront someone about using symptoms but do not confront them WHILE they are using symptoms. For example, if your loved one is binging and purging, do not talk to them about it until later, in a safe and comfortable environment. It also said that some individuals want to be stopped from purging, while others do not, and that is a conversation one should have with their loved one. It gave tips for how to deflect questions such as, "Do I look fat?" It teaches skills where most loved ones are, unfortunately, sorely lacking.

If your loved one is trying to recover, I might give them this book and have them highlight some things, to see if there are any areas where they really want you to change some unhelpful behaviors. Keep in mind that some of the highlighting might be performed by the individual's eating disorder, but it IS her/his recovery. If you think some of what is highlighted is ridiculous and it's just to protect the eating disorder, then that may be a great thing to bring up in family/couples therapy. If your loved one is still in the midst of an eating disorder, not yet ready to work on recovery, then I would read this book without asking her/him to highlight anything. She/he might just use it to manipulate you, and they might not be ready to talk about their eating disorder at all.

I highly recommend this book to significant others, parents, siblings, and friends. It is a super quick and easy read. I recommend it to all my recovering friends when they ask me, "How can I help my family understand my eating disorder?"

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but very basic
Heaton and Strauss have written a book on a very complex topic - eating disorders - and have done a good job in breaking things down so that a caregiver or anyone who is concerened can help through practical means - in conversation, actions, etc... I felt that they provided some very good suggestions as to specific words that are helpful, and words that don't encourage.

I bought this book, as my mid-twenty year old girlfriend has anorexia. Unfortunately, I found that while good information was presented, it was very basic. For example, the first chapter talks about blame and how blaming others can complicate a situation. While this is true, I didn't need to be reminded of this simple fact.

There is no fluff in this book what-so-ever. It is simply filled with tons of suggestions of things to say or not to say, along with a description for each comment. I found it frustratingly simple, with, as I've said before, many topics that felt like common sense. I feel that this book, however, would be a fantastic resource for younger friends of a person with an ED, maybe for the middle school and early highschool years.

On average, I read about half the book within about a 3-day time period, and skimmed the rest.

Chapters include topics on:
Blame, understanding change, being in control of what you can and should be in control of, conversation basics, talking about body image, talking about messages from the media, talking about touch (for romantic relationships), talking about diet, talking about exercise, talking about professional help, talking to young people, managing emergencies, handling relapses, and a "dos and don'ts" chapter.

Each chapter is short, and, as I said before, have many of the "comments" in bold, with an explaination.

For me, this wasn't helpful, although it did affirm a lot that I already knew or felt. I will be searching for a more exhaustive resource, probably this time, one specifically on anorexia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really focuses on what the title suggests!
I found this book as a second try and I'm glad I did! When I had the need for a book on this subject I checked one out of the public library in my hometown. It was so bad I returned it after reading about half. I found this one on Amazon and ordered it without reviews but I'm happy I took a chance.

The focus of the book is on talking, communication and understanding. How to be the best support for a person you love. It empathetically explains what you can expect to help out with and kindly lets you know when to hold back or have patience and realize that you cannot control what someone else eats.

That said there is a lot that you can do to be supportive and encouraging. I have read each section and found myself better understanding what the person suffering from the eating disorder is actually thinking. How they are processing what we are saying, for good or bad.I realized that this is one disorder where it is so easy to try your best to be supportive but fail because your words are inadvertently hurtful or misunderstood.

What I also loved about this book was the lack of filler. It does not spend pages quoting side effects, endless paragraphs of examples that take up space or chapters dedicated to rehash. They wrote a book that filled a need and not to make money on a "hot" topic. It also lets you in on the fact that with an eating disorders there is no easy cure. Many of the books I looked at seemed to hint that if you followed this or that program you'd have this problem crossed off your list, and fast.

The author explains the long term situation, the 3 steps forward 2 steps back path that this disorder usually takes.I appreciated knowing that it might be a long road and not to expect miracles. I learned how to listen, so I'd know when to bring up certain subjects to get the ball rolling again or for the fist time.

Very insightful and informative.
Thank you Ms. Heaton and Ms. Strauss

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST READ for anyone who thinks their kid's got an ED
this book is so so so helpful-- we thought an eating disorder could only happen in someone who looks emaciated and sick, and never eats anything, but when we were confronted with something more than 'picky eating' but less than what we imagined actual eds to be, we checked this book out and it helped immensely.eds happen in the best kids and even in kids who still look pretty healthy--especially when they're growing, according to this book, it can be hard to tell just by looking at someone if they have a problem.also if someone just eats less, but still eats, they can still have anorexia.i highly recommend this book for clearing up what eds actually are, and who can help you-- they talk about what you can do but the bottom line is you have to seek help outside of the family sometimes, as much as you want to be able to "fix it" parents just can't do everything and sometimes someone else knows better than you how to help your kids.nutritionists, therapists, doctors-- they can all be a really good help getting your kids back on track.but this book is such a blessing for parents who don't know whether they've got a problem on their hands or not, and if they do, what to do.thank you to the authors for your wonderful advice!

5-0 out of 5 stars An important read for any parent worried about their child's eating
This book is full of extremely useful advice for any parent, but particularly for parents of adolescents and pre-adolescents with any kind of eating disturbance. If you've noticed your daughter or son eating less, noticed any unusual habits around eating, this book can help you figure out if there's something wrong and what you should do. These authors obviously know what they're talking about and know how to speak to parents on their level, not above or below. They use lots of examples of kids in all sorts of situations, which made their descriptions really easy to follow. This is an easy read, sometimes entertaining but always really informative, and really, really helpful for a worried parent who's at a loss for what to do with their child.

5-0 out of 5 stars impressed by this book
By writing about situtations parents and kids working through issues around reading disorders experience, and then explaining ways the family could problem-solve, this book gently informs about the hard to define struggle of eating disorders. It's well written, with an easy-to-read flow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating Disorders-Time for Change, Plans, Strategies and Work
As a therapist in the field of eating disorders for the past 19 years, I was excited to read a book that got to the heart of the concerns that therapists bring to the table when working with people experiencing eating disorders. The book helped me to think about the multitude of issues that permeate our work in the eating disorders field. I appreciated all the practical issues raised in the book, such as the therapist's use of food and drink, the therapist's attire and the many seemingly simplistic but truly complicated concerns that arise in the treatment relationship. This book is a wonderful teaching tool for all therapists in the field of eating disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive look at eating disorder treatment
Treatment of eating disorders is often an arduous journey for both client and therapist.Dr. Zerbe demonstrates exemplary understanding of the complexities of eating disorders and effective ways of working through underlying psychological issues in "Beyond the Body Betrayed".Clients are categorized by age, with a chapter devoted to each subset, and described in greater detail.Case studies are embedded within the chapters, effectively furthering understanding of key concepts.Dr. Zerbe's solid grasp of eating disorders is evident, and central aspects of the professional therapist-client relationship such as termination, transference, and counter-transference are discussed.I consider their inclusion particularly significant, as I have not found them included in such detail in other eating disorder treatment resources.I was truly impressed by the genuinely caring nature Dr. Zerbe showed through her writing (in my opinion, a pre-requisite for working in any health profession!).I am certain that Dr. Zerbe has touched many lives with her expertise in the field and keen understanding of the human spirit.I highly recommend "Beyond the Body Betrayed" as an excellent resource for treatment of eating disorders!

4-0 out of 5 stars Integrated Treatment of Eating disorders; Beyond the Body Betrayed
I have another book by this author, so I knew this one would be equally informative and well written. It arrived within the said time frame and is in terrific condition. I am very satisfied with the book and the process of ordering and receiving it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great and thoroughly useful book!,
As every parent who has tried to help a child with an eating disorder knows, if we are to be helpful, we need the best source of understandable, practical advice we can get. Dr. Kathryn Zerbe's new book provides the most up-to-date resource available today.

The patient's intention, Dr. Zerbe states, is to become a better person, but he or she creates instead a dangerous routine of purging, exercising far beyond what is physically healthy, binging, dieting, and the like.

Dr. Zerbe explains that because patients with eating disorders believe that they understand both the problem and the solution (to alter their body appearance or size), they do not see the danger in their belief about how to create this "better person." As a result of their circular thinking, patients may put their lives at risk in pursuit of a delusional goal.

The complexity and medical implications associated with eating disorders are enormous and, at times, frightening. Dr. Zerbe makes it clear that there is no single answer, no simple cure. What is required is a plan that integrates the best treatments offered by medicine, various forms of psychotherapy, nutrition, and the like.

Dr. Zerbe's book, while written with mental health professionals in mind, is user-friendly, jargon-free, and will enable parents to better understand and evaluate treatment options offered by their team of practitioners.

This welcomed book is a Godsend to anyone who wants to be helpful to someone suffering from an eating disorder. It will help both parents and therapists think about the disorder and its solution in new, holistic, and practical ways, as well as create new strategies to deal with the many issues involved.

I recommend Dr. Zerbe's book without reservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book
I recently finished reading Dr. Kathryn Zerbe's latest book,The Integrated Treatment of Eating Disorders: Beyond The Body Betrayed. This exceptional work details her vast clinical experiences as a psychiatrist treating these complex disorders and provides both lay and professional readers with the full spectrum of current information- practical and theoretical- to address these challenging problems. This is not simply good reading but essential reading, elegantly written and deftly organized.
