Your library needs to own this...and so do you.
If you're a scifi fan and you're very, very lucky, you get to know Bud Webster.You get to listen and laugh with him as he holds forth about authors and editors, their strengths, their quirks, and the _really_ strange things they do.You get to learn more than you ever knew existed about anthologies and the role they had in shaping the genre as you know it today.(Yeah, anthologies.Remember those?Those things that kept you up all night reading by flashlight under the covers when you were a kid?The things you probably got, as I did, from the _library_?)You get to be fascinated by every minute of his stories, and you catch yourself looking forward to the next chance you get to spend time with him.

Well, if you're not lucky enough to know Bud, this book is the next best thing.It's scholarly enough to quote for your master's thesis on science fiction literature, it's funny enough to keep you wanting to read it, and it's weird enough to list his cats in the index.Just like all the best scifi...

A comprehensive collection... on collections (and anthologies)
There are probably few people out there as well qualified to write on the topic of collections and anthologies than Bud. He makes a great case in his essays for their often-overlooked place and significance in the history of science fiction. For many years collections of short stories were *the* way to get your sci-fi "fix" and Bud is terrific at placing them in their historical context. After reading these lively essays you'll have a new appreciation for anthologies and will likely want to seek more than a few of them out. If such is the case, you could do worse than contacting Bud himself, as he tends to keep many of them in stock in his role of used book dealer.

I have been reading Bud Webster's Anthopology columns in the SFWA Bulletin for years, (Anthopology 101: Reflections, Inspections and Dissections of SF Anthologies)and I'm so glad to see them collected now in one volume. Bud is an extremely knowledgeable historian of SF and Fantasy, and owns all the anthologies he has reviewed. His writing is personal, idiosyncratic, enjoyable, and makes you want to go right out and buy the books. Which you probably should, if you don't own them already. He knows not only the stories and authors, but the sometimes surprising background of some of these anthologies, and has consulted with many of the editors in person or by mail or phone. This book was exactly how it was described. It was delivered on time and is in great condition.

An Excellent General Reference
This was not exactly what I expected, but I was not disappointed in the material.The title says "Dissection" so I expected a descriptive anatomical analysis side-by-side a how-to-dissect manual.Although there is a page describing [roughly] how you should go about dissections, I believe the term dissection used in the title was more of a descriptive term for analysis.Overall, this was a good general reference to the inner strucrures of the anatomy of rats, but if you are looking for a how-to-dissect guide I suggest purchasing something different.However, this would make an excellent companion (for reference purposes) to the how-to guide you decide to go with. ... Comparative anatomy: Manual of vertebrate dissection
Its used for vertebrate anatomy lab. Loose leaf. Very detailed pictures. Good for studying for practicals.

Couldn't get through Comparative Anatomy Without it!
Excellent supplement to Anatomy textbook - full color pictures are perfect for helping the dissection. Excellent book, highly recommended.

A useful College lab text
This lab manual was a supplement text that I was not required to buy however we ended up relying on it heavily in the laboratory so much that I found I needed my own copy, rather than the limited few available.It is fully color and all the structures of Necturus, Squalus and the cat are shown in high detail photographs that are extremely useful when you are looking at your own sample. They also provide more explanation about the function and location ofeach structure.
The one disadvantage that this manual has though is that it does not provide instruction in dissection to see these samples (one reason why my college does not rely on it as a main laboratory manual) and only covers three vertebrate systems and none of the hemichordates.
I believe that it is a worthwhile investment though if you are taking a comparative anatomy course (Such as the one at Florida Tech....) to have this text as reference. ... Read more

Totally diggable
This is a wonderful book: smart, packed with astonishing information, beautifully written and--although it's about "the Body"--100% free of po-mo blather. They don't write 'em like this anymore, which is a damned pity.

A must buy
This has been one of the best books I have read in grad school.Basically, it deals with the creation of the British Anatomy Act and with the criminalization of poverty.However, it's also got great info about grave robbing, murder for body-procurement, burial practices, and corpse decomposition - and it's extremely readable.Richardson explains that she began this book while reading Shelley's Frankenstein and with questions she had about the meanings of dissection and the body.This book is not about Frankenstein, but it's a must-read if you are to truly understand the society that Frankenstein was created for.It's also a must-read if you are at all interested in anatomy, poverty, or social policy dealing with anatomy and poverty.

Wonderful
Even though I took a chance and purchased this book with out being able to see it, and also knowing that it is a couple years older than what my instructor. When the seller said it is in very good condition, it was beyond that. I paid very little for this book, and it is the exact book inside chapter for chapter.So I just wanted to say also that I have never purchased anything from Amazon and it was'nt exactly as the seller said it would be.

Book was in terrible condition
It was stated online that the condition of the book was 'good' but when i got the book i was shocked.The person had written on almost all of the pages and the book looked like it was ready to fall apart!I cant believe i paid that much for a book in this condition.I would have rather spent the full amount and gotten a brand new one.The only good thing was that I received the book within 2 days.

Okay for the price
Initially when i read the product description it said it was in good condition with some highlight markings however, when i received it the pages were loose and there was a pen marking or highlight on every page. Overall, i dont think it was worth the money i paid. The description was false and really it was false advertising. for a few more $ i could have bought a better manual.

It'll work
I actually needed a newer edition, but hoped that this one would work for a cat dissection. The pictures are b&w in this edition but otherwise it's the same, only much cheaper. We only use this manual for a few weeks at the college I attend, then throw them out since they get covered in cat juice, so this book served it's purpose well. Much easier to give away/toss than the $125 one that the school sells. ... Read more

Great reference!
I used this book a tremendous amount in Anatomy 1. It was not a required book for the course but I would use it often when I needed clarification on certain muscles or ligaments etc. The sketches are great!

This is an okay book for dissection of large animals. I wish it had more pictures, but the ones that are there are helpful.

Vert Dissection
This book is very helpful in the lab and it is easy to read.I just thought the book was going to be a little less "used" than it was when I got it.There is so much highlighting and underlining in this book.Other than that the book is in good condition.

Good but some of pictures are tough to discern
Having taught Comparative Anatomy Lab with this book I would not recommend it to someone who is going through dissection for the first time and alone.A good sense of terms (ie. medial, caudal etc)and such is a must. Even having gone through dissections of hundreds of cats some things are still difficult to find.However I like how it ties things together and shows step wise evolution of vertebrates from lampreys to cats. ... Easy to read but...
This is a very solid book if one needs to cover C++ programming essentials but as a beginning programmer, I needed a lot of supplementary information in order to fully understand the material.

I really appreciated the illustrations and "easy to read" font.

Its now available with a CD
This book subsumes my earlier books C++ for C programmers
and Object-Oriented Programming Using C++. It distinctly improves on both. It utilizes dissections more fully, so if you like this method of explanation- it is used throughout.
It is very up-to-date with all code tested on both g++ and Borland.

A large number of cartoons and figures hopefully make it more lively.

It is currently just out October 15th and comes with a very useful supplementary CD.

good quality book
This is a good deal. I do satisfy at the quality of the book. The book is old but still good enough. I am happy with it

Falls short of excellence
I have found that there are a large number of errors in this text,particularly concerning the bowfin skull.The drawings are often sub-parand difficult to follow (particularly muscles, brains).The muscledrawings are particularly poor and it is virtually impossible to determineexactly what the lines are pointing to.Considering that the accompanyingtext book has some of the best drawings I have seen in a comparativeanatomy text, I find the poor quality drawings particularly onerous.Mystudents also do not like the excessive price of the book.It seems as ifthere is too much information for a laboratory manual with many unnecessaryduplications of figures in the text book.Also, there are too many figureswith added color where color in not necessary.The excessive figures andadded color increase the price of this book and should be changed in futureeditions.This text has great potential because it is very well written,but I hope a second edition will include better, more accurate drawings andexclude unnecessary figures and information.I will probably be switchingto Saul Wichnitzer's "Atlas and Dissection Guide for ComparativeAnatomy" in the future because it has far better figures, and incomparative anatomy lab, the figures are by far the most important thing.

I wanted to comment on my experience with the book and some of the other customer reviews.

You do not need to be a market maker or veteran options trader to read and get value from this book. I am a retail options trader, with a very serious full time job, and have virtually no mathematical aptitude, and I have already started benefiting greatly from the book.

In my opinion you should make sure you have basic familiarity with how options work, and some of the basic outright positions and spread techniques and what market view they support, and you will be ready to start learning what options are really about from there. You cannot go wrong by using this book and Mr. Cottle's other materials as the very next step.

Be under no delusion---after the basics---options can get very complicated very quickly--if you let them. I have discovered, contrary to my initial impression, that Mr. Cottle in fact through the use of detail is really attempting to simplify option strategy decisions and trading itself. Through the use of what seems to be complicated examples---CC cuts through the fog and gets to the meat of options strategies and how and why one might choose one over the other--and invariably the best choice is something straightforward.

Based on what I know about him and my experience with his materials, he is committed to teaching. If you expect to read this book without pen and paper in hand, with little or no effort on your part, and have him simply say "do x and you will get rich" this book and his approach is definitely not for you. He is like any good teacher. He will make you work for the answer, but not leave you hanging when you struggle. In working for the answer---and having his approach, experience and techniques available--you will most assuredly gain a grasp of options and how to make money trading them that you never had before.

Don't be intimidated when you first view the book. The presentation looks strange, the tools he uses will be different from those you have seen or used before, and the terminology will be strange to some. There is a reason he takes the approach he does and it will, with a modicum of effort, become clearer every time you are exposed to it and use it.

Here is what it has done for me.

It has forced me to actually think about what may be happening underneath the option quote and the day to day change in a position.

It has convinced me that trading outright positions whether short naked or long does not necessarily produce the best results. Yes longs are problematic due to all the standard theta reasons, and yes naked shorts are risky---we all know that---the trick is to figure out how to take the inherent advantages of either of these approaches, and make them work for your view of the market without getting killed in the process.

What he has made me a believer in is that risk can be reasonably controlled, while still making very attractive rates of return, and if you are looking for a method to make reasonable returns in the market, the raw tools are there for the taking.

He has convinced me that uncomplicated but well constructed spreads, for debit or credit, can actually allow me to participate in the market with a reasonable expectation of success, and allow me to sleep at night in the process without position adjusting every 10 minutes. He has also made me a true believer that options, by their very nature, provide huge flexibilities that outright underlying positions cannot, and allow much wider margins for error if I prove to be wrong in my view in any given position if they are structured correctly in the first place.

You do not have to be a rocket scientist to make money in options. In fact if you arbitrarily go out and sell an option this afternoon at random, odds are it will expire worthless and you will make money. The problem lies in the odds piece that is not in your favor. You also do not have to be a rocket scientist to get killed by these odds. Although small in most cases, when it goes against you---you will be dead unless you are very savvy and well prepared to deal with such an eventuality. This is the piece that CC is so good at getting at--managing the underlying risks in any given option situation, structuring the position correctly and buying or selling it right to hold as much risk as possible in check--while still giving you the opportunity to make some money.

The thing that finally made me a believer was the time he took to talk to me. He is not a prima donna. When I had concerns about spending even one more nickel on books, learning materials, educational seminars, etc. because so much of what I spent has been a waste of money and merely kept the educator in new Mercedes for so long---CC came through with flying colors. He took almost a half hour and spoke with me on the phone, and since then has never failed to answer a polite note or inquiry in his forum on his website Riskdoctor.com. He certainly is not getting rich from my buying the book or a seminar tape as his prices are very fair and honest. All these factors have convinced me that he must have the true teaching bug and his desire is to teach and help me improve.

He is not an easy taskmaster--and he is not going to tell you what to trade. He is a good teacher and like any good teacher he always tries to stay out in front of you a bit with his teaching and materials. This is a good thing for those willing to stretch just a little because the nuances start to emerge very quickly. The best part is he is there to get you untangled when you do get stuck in the weeds.

One more thing, after you read through the book once---go on his website and spend a little money and get one of his taped training sessions that he has actually done with live students [I started with Straddles and Strangles]. It will DEFINITELY help you clear some of the confusion that the book will inevitably create.

If you want to know more about options than any of these get rich books can ever tell you--buy the book---it will pay for itself many times over in your first couple trades, and the bonus is you will understand why it paid for itself, rather than your just having made a lucky guess or two.

Although this original text was written for professional market makers, it proved to be a valuable resource for sophisticated retail investors and hedgers.I therefore created a new book, "Coulda Woulda Shoulda" (available for free download at www.riskdoctor.com) which borrowed about 80% of the original text and added more tools for non-professionals including an email dialogue with a relative novice, spanning 2 months.Most of the strict market making tools have been removed but will be resurrected in book 3; "Taming Your Portfolio" due out later this year.

Best book for options traders.
There are basically two types of options books: mathematical
books on valuation that tend to be filled with solutions
for ever more exotic contracts, and books for traders that
go over the practical workings of positions in various
concrete scenarios. Cottle is definitely of the second type.
There's not really much math in it, unless you're intimidated
by three-dimensional graphs. What it does have is an incredible
wealth of insight, from experience, into the tricks and the

exceptions--the rent-a-call, the dividend plays, contract
risk and post-expo deltas, complicated synthetics, the
interrelations between greeks.

That said, what moved me to write a review was to take
exception with a previous reviewer's comment: "No lazy
editing or prose here". The prose is okay, but the editing
is worse than lazy--it's horrendous. Flipping my copy open
at random I come to p.151-152 on Break-Even analysis. Try
finding column 7 in exhibit 4-23, or the supposed arrow in
column 4. It's all a mess. That's an extreme case, but
throughout the text, it's hard enough trying to pick up
the bond options lingo (futures in 32nds but futures-options
in 64ths--all "ticks"; and the different multipliers for
indexes and futures), without having to deal with missing
words, inaccurate references, etc, etc. But ultimately, working
to figure it all out gets you to understand it all the better.

With five years of floor trading as an equity options market
maker, and having read and reread and rereread... Natenberg,
Baird, Hull, Connolly, Cox Ross Rubinstein, Chriss, Taleb--and
others--I'd say Cottle is clearly the best book. That said,
however, I don't know how much use a non-professional--someone
who doesn't manage a large, actively traded book of options--
will get out of it. It should be intellectually rewarding if you
can figure it out. Maybe inspire you to go look for a minimum
wage clerking job in Chicago, NY, Philly, or SF to get abused
for a year or so and then maybe get a badge.

Options Innovator
I read Options: Perception and Deception at least 3-4 times before many of the advanced concepts began to sink in.This is not a book for an options novice; in fact, I would suggest that most people read Natenberg's book on options prior to engaging in this incredible text.While many of the advanced 3-D graphs were beyond my grasp, I particularly liked Cottle's description of "real world" options positions, how he executed them and how he managed them throughout their duration.Of particular interest to many readers should be the concept of "gamma scalping", and the section on wingspreads and adjusting positions.This text is so far beyond "mainstream" options books, that words do not describe how important this book will become. ... No math?Are you JOKING?
The reviewer who said this book has zero mathematical content must have a different definition of mathematics than I do.True, the book has no formulas, no algebra, no arithmetic, and very few numbers, but it's FULL of combinatorics and geometry, especially symmetry, dissections, and polyhedra.In a sense, this book is nothing BUT math!

If you're at all interested in mathematical puzzles, or symmetry, or geometry, or woodworking, you MUST buy this beautiful book!But if you're looking for a book of numbers and formulas, buy something else.

Good enough book, I suppose, but horrible misadvertised
This is a good book iff you're interested in puzzles as toys, or puzzles as art, or puzzles as anything other than a playground for mathematics.Even the recreational mathematician will be disappointed if he or she ishoping for much math content, because there's none whatsoever. And don'tinterpret "none" as "low level" or"elementary"; we're talking about the empty set here.The onlyreason I give 2 or 3 stars is that I'm sure the book would be useful tothose wanting to see the designs of a number of different puzzles.It doesthat.It's more of a history and showcase.The author seems to make nopretense about the mathematical content, expect, perhaps, through thetitle, but the reviews I had read here at Amazon and elsewhere sure didlead me to expect good stuff.T'was a real disappointment.

Has all the math you may need without getting bogged down in formulas.This CD is perfect for both a beginner or a seasoned pro of puzzle theory.This the best resource I have found to date for those interested in eitherpuzzles or geometric studies for fun.
