Sugar is among the most traded commodities with exports accounting for over one quarter of global production. In this book, the authors discuss the global sugar market; the application of nano - and ultrafiltration in the sugar industry, and sugar utilisation by fungi providing leads for fungal metabolic engineering in crude plant substrates in industrial applications. Additionally, this book discusses cotton crops, the most popularly used textile fibre in the world. The average production of cotton fibre in the world is around 25 million metric tons per year. Additionally, the authors examine cotton fibre grading and classification methods which play pivotal roles in the pricing and marketing of cotton fibres; a look at how the cotton plant responds to different stresses in the breeding of more tolerant crops; and the planting status of cotton world-wide, among others. ... Product Description

A few members of the Gossypium (cotton) genus are cultivated for the production of elongated single-celled fibers valued worldwide at about $20 billion annually at the farm gate, and which sustain one of the world’s largest industries (textiles) with an annual worldwide economic impact of about $500 billion. In a number of ways, cotton production and the textile industry are closely tied to petrochemical usage. At a practical level, cotton genomics offers both bio-based carbon sequestration alternatives to petrochemical use, and improved sustainability of crop production.

The Gossypium (cotton) also genus presents novel opportunities to advance our understanding of the natural world and its organic evolution. In particular, the evolution of cultivated cottons from their wild ancestors has involved a fascinating series of events that offer scientists the opportunity to dissect the evolution of a novel organ, the ‘lint fiber’, and also to unravel the consequences of polyploidy, both for the generation of biodiversity and for crop productivity.

In this book, advances of the past decade will be summarized and synthesized to elucidate the current state of knowledge of the structure, function, and evolution of the Gossypium genome, and progress in the application of this knowledge to cotton improvement. This book will address five broad topics. First, as a backdrop for all studies of the genus, it is important to understand the naturally-occurring diversity in the genus, its organization and distribution, and its evolutionary history. Of special importance is the formation of a single polyploid from two (among 8) diploid genome types, the radiation of this polyploid, and the domestication and improvement of two (among 5 extant) polyploid species.

Product Description
This book is a synthesis and a celebration of a large body of agro-ecological research carried out on the management of the pests of cotton, one of the worlds major crops and one which has historically been a very heavy consumer of inputs of pesticides. It demonstrates how agro-ecological approaches to pest management are at last approaching the mainstream, with an increasing recognition that farmland delivers a wide range of ecosystem services (natures goods and services), including but certainly not solely comprising the production of food. ... Cotton has been a central focus in the development of integrated pest management (IPM), a scientific approach which systematically examines and uses all available production technologies to minimize pest damage. This book is the most complete and authoritative work on this subject, drawing together information on all the key IPM strategies that are applicable to cotton. Other topics include the development and use of pest models, quantitative sampling principles in cotton IPM, economic injury levels and thresholds for cotton pests and biological control of pest populations. The scope of the material and the eminence of the contributing authors in this field make it an important contribution to the literature on cotton IPM. The text will be of interest to plant pathologists, entomologists, agronomists, plant geneticists, and soil scientists. ... Read more

Product Description
Designed as a concise introduction to a complex subject matter, The History of Cotton surveys centuries of heritage linked to one of the American South's most storied and important agricultural products and one of humankind's oldest crops. Beginning in ancient Asia and Africa, the story of cotton spans continents and cultures to arrive in the New World.

Accessible to students and general readers alike, this study quickly narrows its focus to the important role of cotton in the South, looking specifically at the cotton industry; methods for growing, harvesting, and ginning cotton; cotton classification; uses of cottonseed; and the dreaded infestation of the boll weevil. The concluding chapter chronicles the development of the South Carolina Cotton Museum, the sponsoring agency of this volume.

The History of Cotton includes sixty-one black-and-white and ten color photographs, many from the Cliff Smith Postcard Collection, to provide a visual record of cotton's role across America--particularly in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, California, and Massachusetts. ...
