Product Description

Shepherd's Notes- Christian Classics Series is designed to give readers a quick, step by step overview of some of the enduring treasures of the Christian faith. They are designed to be used along side the classic itself- either in individual study or in a study group. The faithful of all generations have found spiritual nourishment in the Scriptures and in the works of Christians of earlier generations. Martin Luther and John Calvin would not have become who they were apart from their reading Augustine. God used the writings of Martin Luther to move John Wesley from a religion of dead works to an experience at Aldersgate in which his ""heart was strangely warmed."" Shepherd's Notes will give pastors, laypersons, and students access to some of the treasures of Christian faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Research
The translations are a little difficult to read, but the notes completed my understanding.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
This was a dissappointment. The name of the book is The Writings of Justin Martyr. It needs to be titled Writings on the Writings of Justin Martyr. Its a commentary on his writings, not the writings of Justin.

4-0 out of 5 stars A satisfying teaser
Justin Martyr's Apologies are phenomenal. This book is just a quick glimpse at his works, but gives a real flavor of his passion and thinking.Profoundly relevant--especially for the church in America. He touches on issues such as engagement with cultural themes in explaining Christianity to unbelievers as well as persecution, imprisonment, torture and death for confessing faith in Christ. It's very convicting when considering how poorly and impatiently we "suffer" through our modern-day indignities.Very convicting.

2-0 out of 5 stars About Justin Martyr, Not By Him
I ordered this and was disappointed to find that it was like Cliff's Notes. It's virtually useless unless you already have a copy of Justin's writings (and who does?). I suppose for six bucks I shouldn't complain.

Would it really have killed them to provide some extra pages of his writings, in keeping with the ambiguous title? Say, twenty or thirty pages. It's not like they're copyrighted by the author's estate. Heck, I can probably grab an English translation of Justin off the web for free. Hey wait a minute, why didn't I think of that before buying this thing?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Companion for the Patristic Theology Novice
Shepherd's Notes accommodate readers with the basic teachings and ideas of some of Christianity's greatest thinkers. This particular volume contains sound, general overviews of all of St Justin Martyr's writings and is, overall, a good primer for his theological and polemical works. It must be noted that Shepherd's Notes is evangelical in orientation but it is pretty fair to Catholic tradition.Excellent for intro-theology students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Growth Through Meditation and Journal Writing
From book's back cover:

"Growth Through Meditation and Journal Writing: A Jungian Perspective of Christian Spirituality shows how Jung's concept of the feminine aspect of human personality, or the receptive mode, is essential in the development of a mature adult spirituality. The author observes that many psychological problems of adulthood are symptomatic of a deeper spiritual concern, i.e., a search for life meaning and purpose and, ultimately, a search for God.

The psychology of C.G. Jung provides a unique perspective to deal with this problem, because it offers a bridge between the scientific and religious aspects of human experience. This work presents seven dimensions of mature Christian spirituality, providing scriptural references, theological and psychological foundations, exercises in guided meditation and journal writing, as well as a brief bibliography for each dimension." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reference of women in the church
This slim volume has several things to recommend it:(1) it includes the whole church - Eastern and Western as well as "heretical" branches such as the Gnostics and Montanists. (2) it includes items forwhich scholarly arguments have been made for a female author even if thosearguments are speculative e.g. the author of the Letter to the Hebrews. This includes canonical and apocryphal works. (3) it includes a widevariety of languages e.g. the entries for Anna Comnena include English,French, Greek, Polish and Russian.

Its most annoying feature?Enticingme with wonderful headings such as Armenian hymnographers ... and showingno English entries.I hope that the book quickly requires updating asscholars uncover additional texts and make available more of the materialsin English. ... Read more

Product Description
The three general editors of the Cambridge Bible Commentary series have all, in their teaching, experienced a lack of readily usable texts of the literature which is often called psuedepigrapha but which is more accurately defined as extra-biblical or parabiblical literature. The aim of this series is to help fill this gap. The welcome accorded to the Cambridge Bible Commentary has encouraged the editors to follow the same pattern here, except that carefully chosen extracts from the texts, rather than complete books, have normally been provided for comment. The introductory material leads naturally into the text which itself leads into alternating sections of commentary. Within the severe limits imposed by the size and scope of the series each contributor will attempt to provide for the student and general reader the results of modern scholarship, but has been asked to assume no specialized theological or linguistic knowledge. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Out of date
I ordered this book because a writers group I am in is reading it together. I was disappointed to find, when I got it, that it was published in 2001. The writing advice is good - that's not something that changes much with time. But the information on submitting articles to magazines and working toward getting a book published is horribly out of date. I would recommend skipping the book and doing publishing research online. You can easily find some very good blogs written by agents and publishers that will tell you much of what you need to know about the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for every author and speaker!
Most aspiring authors are looking for how-to books. The choices are diverse. What sets this book apart is the writers' willingness to openly share what hey have learned in their area of expertise. As a visual learner, I loved the examples that serve as a model to develop excellent projects. Thanks for pulling this all together. ... Read more

Product Description
Modern Christianity has been subjected to many re-interpretations which seek to remove elements of mythology and to 'de-mystify' its traditions. But there is also a parallel development in which a strong current of renewal finds inspiration from the spirit and essential character of the early Churches. The texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Nag Hammadi, and more recent research on ancient documents, have thrown an unexpected light on the roots and emerging faith of the first Christians. Fresh insights into these texts reveal that the early Christians drew inspiration from a number of sources, such as the Judaic mystery tradition, the Essenes and other gnostic sects. Andrew Welburn presents a selection of the most important early texts, together with an authoritative and fascinating commentary. He shows how the new insights gained into the writings of the early Christian reaffirm the fundamental mysteries at the heart of Christianity. ... Read more

Welburn offers an important anthology of writings that takes us inside the sources of ancient Gnosticism and the Mysteries which stand enigmatically as handmaidens to the birth of the Christian religion, and still point out to us hidden depths of its spiritual significance otherwise largely lost.

Product Description
The aim of this book is to give access to sources which illustrate Graeco-Roman views on Jews and Christians from 200 BC to AD 200. Passages range from longer extracts written by historians to short incidental references by disparate authors which throw light on attitudes towards beliefs and social customs. The pagan religious background, especially the Mystery religions, is also described and illustrated by selected passages, so that the reader may have some idea of the general religious climate during this period. Every quotation is prefixed by a brief biography of the author and all passages have been translated into English, with explanatory comment when necessary. Connecting essays act as summaries and focus the attention on essential issues. These, together with a chronological chart and maps should enable a student coming fresh to the subject, without previous specialised knowledge, to see the period in historical perspective. ...
