This book offers a new approach to the vexing question of how to write the early history of Islam. The first part discusses the nature of the Muslim and non-Muslim source material for the seventh- and eighth-century Middle East and argues that by lessening the divide between these two traditions, which has largely been erected by modern scholarship, we can come to a better appreciation of this crucial period. The second part gives a detailed survey of sources and an analysis of some 120 non-Muslim texts, all of which provide information about the first century and a half of Islam (roughly A.D. 620-780). They don't not seem to have it on Amazon nor on the other sites that I looked at...

Remarkable Must-have history book of early Islam
I started reading this book in hopes I can get better understanding of 7th-8th century AD from sources other than Muslim sources. Prof. Hoyland did not disappoint with this treasure book.

His unbiased analytics of the scriptures, cross referencing every material with numerous other sources as to establish the validity of the source is a great task that he had undertaken eagerly. I can't imagine the amount of research that went into this book, quite astonushing.

The book is close to 800 pages, but only 600 pages deal discuss the work and 200 pages of references. It is clear the author took keen care of examining all materials available including architectural designs relating to that period.

The book in my opinion explains why you simply shouldn't take scriptures of Muslim/non-Muslim sources alike for being true. Many of the old scriptures include apologetic works, polemical stories and sometimes right out exaggerations.

This book serves to correct what Crone and others assumed by taking scriptures of non-Muslim and claiming it to be the only explanation for how was Islam in 7th century. The book is packed with scripture quotations from the Greeks to the Chinese on issues related to the rise of Islam.

The book showed that Muslim sources of 9th/10th AD describe closely in the same way the events that non-Muslims had written in 7th/8th AD.

I'll be keeping this book in my library and pass it on to my children. It is a treasure of historical magnificance. The sad part though, the same issues arose during that period between Christians, Jews and Muslims still exist until today. It is clear no siding is winning, and no Messaiah is coming.

Kudos to the author, he and all those took part in producing this work deserve our gratitute.

An invaluable sourcebook
While there might be a little analysis, the most valuable task the author has engaged in is collecting a number of non-Arab and non-Muslim sources regarding Islam. This is one of very few books that endeavors to do so and is a massive tool for any scholar seeking to explore Islam via non-Islamic sources.

The sources range from a plethora of Greek sources to a few from the Syriac and even a few Persian ones. This is clearly no easy task and the reader profusely thanks the author for his dedication to the subject. This analysis is easily skipped over in the rush to get to the actual sources. As one such person, the commentary and analysis is not a subject I can comment on but the sources themselves are a pleasure to have.

Reading those sources (the footnotes can also be very revealing) whets the appetite for more and there are certainly more documents out there (many a Syriac Christian library still exists in Turkey and Syria) to be translated and put to use by scholars.

The sole reason why the book has not received a full five stars is that several sources that do discuss Islam

Read the book, please!
Two of the reviews posted here suggest that the we might title them "Seeing 'Seeing Islam. . .' as Others Saw it." The New York reader's propoganda for Hagarism and other far-fetched perspectives is explicitly taken on and refuted in Hoyland's Chapter 13.Chapter 14 begins, saying "... it is a strong argument in favor of [Muslim witnesses] that they do frequently coincide with what is said by [non-Muslim witnesses]."
This book is mostly a sober, almost 19th-century style translated collection of all the sources refering to Muslims and Islam in the first (roughly) two centuries of Islam. These sources are organized (a bit frustratingly for this reader) by the language of their origin (rather than chronologically). Execurses collect early Muslim sources, and various chapters meticulously discuss the sources, how they can be used, and other methodological issues. The author then carefully, soberly, and very persuasively draws conclusions about the original Muslim self-identity, the cultus, the nature of the early community's religiosity (or religiosities) etc. It is a tour de force work, invaluable for those interested in Early Islam and it puts paid to speculative, thinly evidenced, and frankly hostile works like that of Nevo and Koren. It's a pity that it is so difficultto find, however.

Truth is the first Victim
The book is quick on conclusions. It avoids any analysis of archeological finds that do not accord with such conclusions. The fact of the matter is that much evidence support the 'traditional' story of Islam, in particular in the Fertile Crescent where archeological finds have not contradicted the 'traditional' story.

The fact that no such digs where ever conducted in the birthplace of the entire movement is regrettable. Incidently, Mecca should prove a veritabley exciting site, given the fact that it had been on a trade route for probably hundred of years before Mohammed's time.

The search for answers to these questions, without theological or (much worse) political motives seems hard to expect in the present time. As usual, "Truth is the first victim" of the current tragic events. ... Read more

The Early Church Fathers--Sorted by Doctrine
This book presents a wealth of information on the early Church. One distinguishing feature of it is that each Church father's writings are sorted according to doctrine. For instance, the writings of Clement include his statements on salvation as a free gift of God, independent of works (p. 30). This, of course, is said to have anticipated the sola fideo position of the Reformation.

Interestingly, Clement states that Christians should accept military service (p. 31). So does Tertullian (p. 156). This contradicts those who suggest that the early Christians were pacifists.

There is much discussion of the Sacraments. It appears that all of the Church fathers believed that the Holy Communion elements become the actual Body and Blood of Christ after consecration. Tertullian is no exception: His statement about the Eucharist being a "symbol" uses the latter term in a different sense than the way it is used today (p. 149). Moreover, allegorical approaches to the Eucharist do not ipso facto undermine the reality of the Real Presence.

The Fathers also believed that baptism washes away sins. However, Tertullian rejected infant baptism (p. 145).

Some of the Church fathers had rather unorthodox views. For instance, Origen believed in a form of universalism (p. 256). But universal salvation was not to be bestowed by God automatically: It followed long periods of punishment for its belated recipients.

If I had to suggest one book that would give the best summary of major Christian thought development from the start until 350 AD, I would suggest this book. Very unsatisfactory translation
The work of the desert fathers is seminal to understanding the Christian faith generally, and the monastic tradition in particular--I expect, in fact, that most readers of the desert fathers would have some interest in monasticism. This translation, however, was "mildly modernized" by someone who hasn't the first clue about the monastic tradition. I'll take one particularly grating example: the replacement of the term "cell" with "prayer chamber". Apparently Mr Carrigan believes these two terms are equivalent. They are not. "Cell" is ubiquitous in all monastic literature, ancient and modern. A monk's cell is not where he goes to pray and then leaves. A cell is not a prayer chamber. It is not (as the author claims in the introduction) "simply a monk's dwelling place". It's where he prays, eats, sleeps, does lectio, and fights all his spiritual warfare against the demons which he, as a monk, considers very real and very personal entities.

A young monk asked Abba Moses to give him a piece of useful advice.
"Stay in your cell and your cell will teach you," the wise elder answered.

"Stay in your prayer chamber" just doesn't cut it.

Read the desert fathers. But move on from this translation.

A Ready Reference for Beginners
Henry Bettenson, a teacher in Patristics and Classics has made an important contribution to the students who wish to delve into the Fathers of the Church. The present book provides an introduction. The book deals with the Church Fathers from the council of Nicea to Pope Leo the Great. This period from 325 to 461 is called the golden age of patristic literature. The Fathers represented here are Cyril of Jerusalem, Hilary of Poitiers, Basil of Caesaria, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Theodore of Mopsuestia, John Chrysostom, Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine of Hippo, Cyril of Alexandria, Theodoret of Cyrus, and Leo the Great. It contains short biographic sketches of the Fathers represented here and citations from their writings carefully categorized under different headings.

Perhaps better material than analysis.
This is a very valuable book for those, like myself, in the position of having a lively interest in the historical Middle East while knowing neither Arabic nor Turkish (nor German, where I would expect some very good scholarship, between the Hapsburgs and the Hohenzollerns). The meat of the book is the translation of letters of travel by four Ottoman subjects (two Moroccan officials, one Morisco who slipped out of Spain, and an Iraqi Christian cleric) in Europe -- especially Spain and France -- and the New World, and this is certainly interesting reading. The relations of East and West are more equal here than in _Al-Jabarti's Chronicle of Napoleon in Egypt_; this is how Islam (or rather, two Muslims, one New Christian who wasn't, and one Eastern Christian who was) saw the West, when Islam and the West were equals.

As such, this is valuable data for anyone who is looking to improve his understanding of Early Modern culture, European or Near Eastern; one of the most interesting points is how much cultural context the two sides share. Both the Near Eastern writers and their European interlocutors know and focus on classical literature -- and on Arabic literature, as well; Galen rings a bell for both parties, but so does Avicenna. Note that the cultural crossover was even more pronounced than this scholarly commonality -- Ottoman popular culture even included St. George and Roland as spahis, as mentioned in _Popular Culture in Early Modern Europe_. Personally, I would have expected more Persian influence in the Ottoman world; apparently, just as the Pyrenees are the highest mountains in Europe, the Zagros are the highest in western Asia.

Sadly, the author's commentary is not the equal of his selections. He puts up the increasingly frayed smoke-screen of the modern Muslim writer, of which the exemplar is _Orientalism_ and the explanation is in _Culture and Conflict in the Middle East_. Briefly, Muslims (especially Arab Muslims, including Maghrebis) are triumphalist; they convince themselves that every major religious figure from Adam to Moses to Jesus was actually a Muslim, and that the world was theirs before everyone else took it away; and as such, they are unwilling to admit any fault in their home society (cf. the gulf between the Ottoman millet system and its modern apologists' claims of religious tolerance), and are especially unwilling to admit that the Muslim world was a very bad neighbor from the beginning of its history down to its forcible subdual in the 19th and 20th centuries, and again after the "withdrawal from empire" of the French and especially the English. (After all, all Muslim conquests are by definition reconquests, and when was a reconquest ever anything to complain about?)

In this book, this takes the form of carefully glossing over the Barbary corsairs while emphasizing the presence of Christian ones (which is surprising and informative -- although there's a reason the Tunisian, Algerian, and Moroccan Corsairs are better known than the Knights of Malta or the corsairs of Venice), and generally depicting Christians as the aggressors against innocent and peaceful Muslims. Not every book about Islam has to point out that the Muslims conquered Spain rather than having been born there, nor does it have to mention the two sieges of Vienna, the conquest of Byzantium, and so on, any more than every book about Russia has to talk about Lenin and Stalin; but an author writing about Russian travelogues in the 1930s really ought to point out the Stalinist purges, and likewise, an author writing about Muslim -- predominantly Moroccan -- travelogues in the 1500s should own up to the scale of Muslim privateering and slave-trading. If Muslim travelers were met with massive suspicion in the West, it wasn't purely because the Christians of this era were unreasonable bigots; it was also somewhat related to Moroccan corsairs raiding Ireland, or the depopulation of whole regions of Georgia (beautiful women, land borders with both Persia and the Ottomans, and limited military capacity are a disastrous combination), or the perfidy so common in the Ottoman elite (Selim II at Cyprus, for example) -- which lost nothing in the telling in a distinctly paranoid age.

But, I gave this book four stars, and I'd stand by it. The author's commentary would probably produce seriously mistaken beliefs in a generalist audience, but this is not written for a generalist audience. I hope. On the other hand, the author does seem to have written this as a refutation to Bernard Lewis; I don't think it's as successful as he intended it to be, but that's a subject for another time. ... This book aims to introduce the work of Hellenistic Jewish writers of the period 200 BC to AD 200. Four in particular are studied.
