5-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
I'm only about 1/2 way through, but so far, this book has been a valuable resource for me in learning how to deal with my daughter who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. The book is easy to read and I would recommend it for any parent who is struggling with raising a child with ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST EFFECTIVE ADHD TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY TO DATE!!!
There is a reason that the A.P.A. sought the publication of this book.It is cutting-edge, thought-provoking, and at times, counter-intuitive, but will deliver unprecedented results for any open-minded reader. It is a very different but highly proven model for ADHD which, unfortunately, is still new to many professionals. The plain truth is that this book represents the most effective ADHD treatment philosophy to date, just as the A.P.A.'s response, and the author's national and international awards suggest.

A MUST-READ for any parent or teacher of an ADHD child. The text book by the same author is a MUST-READ for any mental-health professional.

This book will change the way your home sounds every night. You will wear out every page, as many grateful parents have before you.It is the parent's "play book" that will bring the grades up and restore the peace!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent information for parents and school professionals
This book is easy to read and provides excellent up to date information for parents and/or school professionals who work with students who are diagnosed with ADHD. This book is a great reference for development of behavior programs both at home and at school to use as part of a treatment plan. The book addresses the importance of diet.It can be especially helpful to parents in understanding medication options and getting the help that their child is eligible for and needs in school. As a practicing school psychologist, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a relief!
I have two sons with add/ADHD and was frustrated that the doctors didn't seem to answer all my concerns. This book has helped me understand more and feel more comfortable in the treatment course we have taken. We have changed our kids diet and are implementing some stratagies already. This book is a must have!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
There were many things I didn't know that I thought I did.Especially, how to go about the process of helping your child, in school, when you can't be there.Super informative book. This was recommended by my son's counselor.I read it in a day! ... Read more

Product Description
Children who have autism require comprehensive educational and treatment services. There are a myriad of approaches currently recommended to practitioners and parents, but little is known about their efficacy. Which are the most effective in teaching skills, overcoming behavior challenges, and improving quality of life? Methods must be based in research settings, but be easily extended to real world settings where children with autism live, go to school, socialize, and recreate. Identifying and validating effective practices is a complex and multi-faceted process, but an essential one for responsible research and practice. This book brings together multiple and contemporary perspectives on intervention effectiveness for autism education and behavior support. With contributors from a variety of disciplines and orientations, Effective Practices for Children with Autism presents a critical appraisal of current practice standards, emphasizing empirically supported procedures and research-to-practice applications. By bringing together a diverse group of authors, the editors have ensured that the vast field of information on interventions for children with autism is thoroughly examined, and that no topic has gone untouched. Written for practitioners, research scientists, and clinicians, the book is an essential framework for evaluating educational and treatment procedures, selecting those that are most effective, and evaluating outcomes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great content but loses a star for Kindle formatting
This is a great book and much of the time it felt like the author was talking directly to me. I believe it will work but I'm waiting for my wife to get a chance to read it so we can work together on the plan with our children. I recognize a lot of bad habits in both of us that can be fixed.

I'm taking away one star because of the Kindle formatting. There is the "Ask Dr. Leman" section with an index of topics, however, the page numbers are for the printed book, not the Kindle edition. That makes that section very difficult to use without reading straight through. It is meant to be used as a reference and not necessarily read straight through. I have already left feedback with Amazon requesting that it be changed. If that is fixed, it will make the Kindle edition a lot more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applied Behavior Analysis Curriculum
This book outlines the curriculum that special education teachers use in the treatment of young children with the diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder. It is a very practical and useful book, a must-have for parents, therapists, and educators alike.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite What I Expected
I was pleased overall with the book, but I expected it to have more intervention strategies and suggestions for behavioral modification.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST ABA BOOKS OUT THERE.
I HAVE MANY BOOKS ON AUTISM. SINCE I AM RUNNING AN IN HOME ABA PROGRAM.I HAVE FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE EXTREMELY HELPFUL.I WILL RECOMMENDED THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WANTED TO RUN AN ABA PROGRAM.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great manual for parents and professionals
Just beginning in this field, I did not know what to expect concerning the reading material I would have to read and study.Like many naïve people, I assumed most ABA material would be too scientific or difficult to understand.Although I use ABA at work daily, thinking of it as a scientific treatment made me wary that it would be too hard to explain to others or even too difficult to truly understand myself. However, that all changed after I was assigned to read the second chapter in this book. The second chapter of this book is evaluating claims about treatments for autism. The chapter begins by describing the difference between science, pseudoscience, and antiscience. While describing each of these terms, she provides examples, easy to understand definitions, and describes how each can be seen in current treatments in autism.I believe that many parents who have children with autism are not fully educated on the types of treatments being offered to them for their children.Instead in their need to find a "cure," they are choosing treatment plans that may do more harm than good. However by reading this chapter, parents can begin to learn how to evaluate treatments and separate the ridiculous from the scientific. In this chapter, she describes in detail the factors professionals and parents should use for evaluating treatments, such as is there any evidence, are their replications of the studies with positive findings, is there too much subjective evidence, did they perform controlled experiments, etc.As a result, parents are able to find a treatment plan that will benefit their child and not harm them in the long run.The parents are able to become more involved and have a clearer understanding of the type of treatment their child is receiving. Also, it will allow them to become more involved with the treatment because they will have the research and information in front of them of what they should expect from the intervention chosen.
Another positive aspect of the book is that the authors may prefer ABA treatment for children with autism but they do not discourage other treatments or tell a parent what to do.Instead, they describe other intervention programs, their history, purpose, and any research regarding treatment. They show parents how treatments that look appealing may show no scientific backings for treating children with autism.Unlike many other interventions, it provides parents with the research and information to evaluate the treatments they may have tried besides ABA.The research presented is a starting point for parents to go out and find more research about different interventions plans, but it also provides an example about what parents should look for and disregard when evaluating treatments.I believe this book provides a good guide to use for parents and professionals on how to effectively evaluate treatment programs for children with autism. In this day where many pseudoscientific treatments are becoming available making promises of "curing" children with autism, parents and professionals need a manual that will help them learn how to scientifically choose the right program for their child without relying on other people's subjective reasons.

5-0 out of 5 stars After the diagnosis....
Catherine Maurice points out the strategy of this manual very succinctly by stating "We are putting ourselves in the shoes of parents."Definitive ways to begin a home based program dealt with issues such as the hiring of an A.B.A. therapist and obtaining volunteers from local colleges.Examples of the efficacy of parent groups such as F.E.A.T. allow us to see the possibilities of cost effective home programs.Starting up an early intervention program was compared to beginning a small business. It requires parents motivated to work closely with professionals in both home and community settings. Interventions were clearly described, and systems of recording data to track individual student progress were labeled and detailed.Passages explaining how to determine the effectiveness of programs based on scientifically proven facts are specific and simple enough for a layperson to understand.
Dr. Ivar Lovass` chapter states "Behavioraltreatment is based on stepwise and cumulative knowledge from scientific research."(Page 242).
Speech Language Pathologists and A.B.A. therapists working in tandem enhance similar goals. The importance of tracking progress in these areas by parents and professionals in contact with the child were clearly highlighted.
Broad explanations of legal rights were provided by a special education lawyer.Specific concerns of what to address in an I.E.P and determination of where a child will have optimum progress, not just the "least restrictive environment," were outlined by professionals and effectively following A.B.A. programs conclude the manual. Many experts and parents collaborated on this manual, and I believe the purpose was to provide parents and educators with a comprehensive overview and summation of exactly what a good A.B.A. program is and does for children.
Parents of young children newly diagnosed with autism will greatly benefit from the scientific and personal support that is found in this manual. My local state run special education resource library has this manual in the early childhood section.I will keep this in my personal library and reference it frequently.Out of the hundreds of books I've read on the subject of autism, this manual surpasses them in terms of practical and hopeful ideas, whether or not it fits into your immediate plan of therapy. There is a broad range of abilities and differences among all people, and especially those on the spectrum. It behooves us to discern exactly how we can help our children, and if, in fact, there is objective evidence and success to justify therapies in use, and whether or not they will generalize into the future.

Product Description

Autism was once thought of as a rare condition, until the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network released the statistic that about 1 in every 150 eight-year-old children in various areas across the United States is afflicted by an autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. This news led to a dramatic expansion of research into autism spectrum disorders and to the emergence of applied behavior analysis (ABA) as the preferred method of treatment, even among prescribing practitioners.

Applied Behavioral Analysis for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders ably synthesizes research data and trends with best-practice interventions into a comprehensive, state-of-the-art resource. Within its chapters, leading experts review current ABA literature in depth; identify interventions most relevant to children across the autism spectrum; and discuss potential developments in these core areas:

  • Assessment methods, from functional assessment to single case research designs.
  • Treatment methods, including reinforcement, replacement behaviors, and other effective strategies.
  • The role of the differential diagnosis in ABA treatment planning.
  • Specific deficit areas: communication, social skills, stereotypies/rituals.
  • Target behaviors, such as self-injury, aggression, adaptive and self-help problems.
  • ASD-related training concerns, including maintenance and transition issues, and parent training programs.

This volume is a vital resource for researchers, graduate students, and professionals in clinical child and school psychology as well as the related fields of education and mental health.

5-0 out of 5 stars HEALING CHILDREN'S ATTENTION & BEHAVIOR DISORDERS & PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENTS
Amazing book, and everyone that has a child or family member with any ATTENTION & BEHAVIOR DISORDERS should be reading this book, because prescription drugs is not the answer at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book which saves children.
I'm rating this book 5 star, because the criterion for Amazon 5-star rating is "I love this book!", and I really do. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know the foundations of orthomolecular medicine, and the basics of nutrition for children.

That said, this book is almost completely a republishing of the great Dr. Hoffer's "ABC of Natural Nutrition for Children". The present title is not truly representative of the content, as the information contained is vital for all children. Additionally, the subject matter largely deals with other problems such as schizophrenia. I personally was disppointed when I bought this book, because I have the previous edition, and I felt ripped off, having bought the same book twice, and having read the previous edition three times. Three times? Yes, it's that good.

The late and great Dr. Hoffer, one of my lifetime heroes, was most important pioneer of orthomolecular medicine, which I believe will one day be recognized as primary medicine, the primary disease prevention modality and first line of cure. This is especially true of psychiatric medicine, the convention approach to which has never found a cure for anything. On the contrast, the orthomolecular approach as outlined in the present book actually cures people, sending them back to their families and society as well beings. Perhaps the greatest strength of this book is that many actual case histories are brought, turning theory into proven fact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vitamin Therapy Beats Ritalin or Adderall Hands Down
(The reviewer is Assistant Editor of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine)

A riddle: how many years does it take for a new way of treating behavior disorders in children to be generally accepted? The answer is forty, according to Abram Hoffer, M.D, Ph.D. There are few physicians who have sufficient experience to personally validate such a claim, but Dr. Hoffer can. He pioneered megavitamin research and treatment back in the early 1950's, and, half a century later, has still been largely ignored by the medical profession. Why? Because Dr. Hoffer treated learning disabled and/or ADHD kids with vitamins. And, he got results.

This is a concise and powerful book. It contains more than enough information to set the medical profession on its ear. In my opinion, it is the most elegant explanation of orthomolecular (megavitamin) medicine since Linus Pauling's historic 1968 paper in Science. In fact, Hoffer had a 17year jump on Pauling; vitamin B-3 (niacin, or niacinamide) to treat behavioral disorders was first used by Hoffer and colleague Dr. Humphrey Osmond in 1951. Niacin worked then, and it works now.

I know a 10 year old boy who was having considerable school and behavior problems. Interestingly enough, the child was already on physician-prescribed little bits of niacin, with a total daily dose of less than 150 mg.Not a bad beginning, since the RDA for kids is under 20 mg/day. But it wasn't enough to be effective, and the boy was slated for the Ritalin-for-lunch bunch. Dr. Hoffer suggested trying him on 500 mg niacinamide three times daily (1,500 mg total). That's a lot, but niacinamide is a comfortable, flush-free form of vitamin B-3.So Mom tried it.

What a difference!

People often ask, "If this treatment is so good, how come my doctor doesn't know about it?How come it is not on the news?"The answer may have more to do with medical politics than with medical science. Consider Hoffer's views on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: "The DSM system (the standard of the American Psychiatric Association) has little or no relevance to diagnosis. It has no relevance to treatment, either, because no matter which terms are used to classify these children, they are all recommended for treatment with drug therapy" combined, sometimes, with other non-megavitamin approaches. "If the entire diagnostic scheme were scrapped today, it would make almost no difference to the way these children were treated, or to the outcome of treatment.Nor would their patients feel any better or worse." Statements like these do not exactly endear one to the medical community.

And, as if such statements are not enough, Hoffer then devotes the balance of the book to setting out genuine nutritional alternatives to drug therapy for ADHD children. He provides vitamin dosage details, food tables, along with a large number of references. In addition, many case histories are included, along with a bad foods list, numerous research summaries, precise recommendations for optimum diet, comparisons of drugs and vitamins, a discussion of allergies and food additives, behavioral self-tests, and, most importantly, a wealth of professional experience.

The best part is that this is a book of practical, positive advice. Criticisms and even lawsuits over the hazards of tranquilizers, Ritalin, and related pharmaceuticals are on the rise, but neither court nor controversy can cure your child. "Battered parents" (Hoffer's term) need to know what to do, and now. Saying no to drugs" also requires saying "yes" to something else. That something else is nutrition, properly employed.

For those who say there is insufficient scientific evidence to support megavitamin therapy for children's behavior disorders, I say they haven't been looking hard enough. Hoffer and his colleagues conducted the first double-blind controlled vitamin trials in psychiatric history in 1952. He was among the first to employ vitamin C as an antioxidant, use the B-vitamins against heart disease, and, with Dr. Osmond, was the first to employ niacin to treat behavioral disorders.Dr.Hoffer has over 500 publications to date. This single book (and he has written nearly 30 others) will present the reader with the most comprehensive and comprehensible review of vitamin therapy for ADHD that I have yet seen.

The simple way to determine whether vitamins will help your child is to try them. When you read Dr. Hoffer you get invaluable guidance from the foremost authority on the subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for Nurse Practitioners
This was a required book for graduate school for my Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program. In my opinion, there are many more valuable pediatric Growth and Development books available (check Mandleco's book).I do not like the narrative approach of this book; it is vague.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-physicians
This is the most impressive volume on child development that I have read. It is a unique effort, presenting reader-friendly and comprehensive information regarding the development of children and adolescents. Although it is written for Pediatricians, the "Perspectives', "Quick Check" behavioral descriptions, and "Heads Up" indicators of difficulty, provide invaluable information for all who work with children. The format, describing clinical issues that may arise at various ages along with brief demonstrative vignettes, is simply outstanding.I highly recommend this book to medical personnel, mental health professionals, and child/adolescent educators because it will add to the competency of all readers. My compliments to the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was seeking

Parents of teenagers may benefit by an objective explanation of the physiological and associated psychological changes of their children. Researchers may benefit by constructing better targeted interview questions.Clinicians may benefit by learning of alternate or different or increasing number of approaches to pediatric care. And the inquiring mind can simply learn and enjoy. ... Product Description

In a book likely to transform how parents manage many of their child's daily struggles, Drs. Smith and Gouze explain the central and frequently unrecognized role that sensory processing problems play in a child's emotional and behavioral difficulties. Practicing child psychologists, and themselves parents of children with sensory integration problems, their message is innovative, practical, and, above all, full of hope.

A child with sensory processing problems overreacts or underreacts to sensory experiences most of us take in stride. A busy classroom, new clothes, food smells, sports activities, even hugs can send such a child spinning out of control. The result can be heartbreaking: battles over dressing, bathing, schoolwork, social functions, holidays, and countless other events. In addition, the authors say, many childhood psychiatric disorders may have an unidentified sensory component.

Readers Will Learn:

  • The latest scientific knowledge about sensory integration
  • How to recognize sensory processing problems in children and evaluate the options for treatment
  • How to prevent conflicts by viewing the child's world through a "sensory lens"
  • Strategies for handling sensory integration challenges at home, at school, and in twenty-first century kid culture

The result: a happier childhood, a more harmonious family, and a more cooperative classroom. This thoroughly researched, useful, and compassionate guide will help families start on a new path of empowerment and success.

3-0 out of 5 stars Agree with most
I have to agree with most here in saying that this book was helpful on some things but too extreme on others. You really have to know your child.Worth the read but would have just as well borrowed it from the library than purchase it ... does not constitute as a book that I often look upon for reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
This is the best book I've read about Sensory Issues. It helps you get inside the experience of a child with these issues. It helps elicit a compassionate, understanding response to these children who can be hard to live with. It is helpful and obviously written by mothers who have lived it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sensory-Sensitive child
This book is a very good resource for parents of SPD(Sensory Processing Disorder) children.I especially like the way they describe SPD; I know now how to describe it to other people. This book describes behavioral problems that SPD kids can have and how to help them cope with it.It is very good information. It is a must have book to go along with "The Out of Synch Child" ... Product Description

From the author of The Defiant Child comes the first book to connect From the author of the groundbreaking The Defiant Child comes the first book to connect explosive behavior—when kids go from Jekyll to Hyde and back in the blink of an eye—with its underlying causes

Does your hitting, kicking, screaming child explode with so little provocation that you can't help but wonder if he’s possessed? Are his extreme tantrums becoming the stuff of playground legend? And are you about to lose your job because his daycare or school repeatedly asks you to pick him up early?
Dr. Douglas Riley’s ear-to-the-ground insights will give much-needed help to desperate parents who have one overriding question: Why does my child act like this? This compassionate yet no-nonsense therapist explains that explosive behavior is the mere tip of the iceberg. Instead of using a one-size-fits-all strategy, Dr. Riley identifies the eleven most common causes of explosions and accordingly tailors his treatment strategies to address the underlying cause of the behavior.
What Your Explosive Child Is Trying to Tell You is a lifeline for parents who are at their wits’ end.

DR. DOUGLAS RILEY is a clinical psychologist whose practice focuses on children and adolescents who are explosive, oppositional, depressed, or have difficulties with concentration and learning. He is the author of The Defiant Child: A Parent’s Guide to Oppositional Defiant Disorder as well as The Depressed Child: A Parent’s Guide for Rescuing Kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!
I am a therapist and purchased several copies of this book to loan to parents and teachers. This book helps one understand why children explode and gives good (and not the usual) ideas for helping the child! A grandparent told me that she understands much better why her grandson gets angry so much and now has more patience with him.

5-0 out of 5 stars What your Explosive Child is Trying to Tell You
This was a great purchase, came quickly and the book itself is in excellent condition. There is so much that I can learn about my child from this book, really glad to have brought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional resource for aprents
Does your child have difficulty with transitions? Does he "fly off the handle" at the littlest disappointment? If you answered "yes" then this book is a must.Dr. Riley clearly explains why explosive children react the way they do. He covers a wide range of contributing factors such as: transitions, learning disabilities, food sensitivities, anxiety, adhd etc.His solutions for these children are very clear and effective. This book is an important resource for parents, educators, social workers, and psychologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor, buy and read this book!
I have a six year old daughter who is on the Autistic Spectrum. For years, her behavior has made me want to throw myself in front a bus.I have read so many books promising answers to our problems but none offered more than temporary relief for us and our daughter. This all changed when I read and applied Dr. Riley's recommendations.Although not written specifically for special needs children this book answered our prayers and more.Dr. Riley's techniques turned our explosive child into a model child and peace has reigned throughout our household for weeks now.As stated earlier, I have read much on this topic and have never found anything as easy to apply and easy for our daughter to put into practice. His "brain game" is shear genius!Dr. Riley will forever be in my heart and I am eternally thankful that he has written something that provides so much to so many. If you are struggling with an explosive child there is nothing you can do to improve you and your child's life like reading and implementing Dr. Riley's techniques.I hope for the best for you and your children. ... Product Description

In her private practice, Mary-Elaine Jacobsen worked with thousands of parents to help them with their defiant, obnoxious, and challenging children. By following her program parents have seen their children's arguing, tantrums, and disobedience come to an end.

In THE BRAT STOPS HERE, Dr. Jacobsen comprehensively outlines her program for giving parents the essential tools they need to set limits and expectations and follow through with their kids when they cross the line. The key to Dr. Jacobsen's program is the Privileges On/Privileges Off approach. When a child does not comply with the rules of the house (which are carefully explained to the child in an age appropriate manner), he or she loses all privileges and must earn them back by apologizing, acknowledging what they would do differently, doing what was asked of them in the first place, and performing an additional chore. Following this approach consistently over the course of five weeks will have a dramatic effect on the household--including reducing tension in the interaction between parents and children, developing skills that will help children get along better at home and at school, and laying the foundation for children to become self-sufficient, responsible adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering, Inspiring, Real --- Practical Advice For Empowering Today's Parents!
This gem is well written and includes practical and action-oriented plans for restoring balance to family life. While other books try to explain theory and behavior, this book focuses on parenting actions and reminds us that our job as parents is to raise our children to become healthy functioning adults. The book makes it easy to see how certain unmanaged behaviors, when allowed to continue, develop into habits and then permanent personality traits. And these personality traits contribute to tomorrow's social problems, distressful workplaces, and dysfunctional families. In clear and simple terms, Dr. Jacobsen explains where to focus our time and attention, how to redirect our child's behavior, and when to make these changes in our parenting behaviors.

This book will help those who feel pressured to give their children every advantage but have forgotten their primary job as parents: to support our children in becoming respectful, caring and responsible adults. The book outlines a step-by-step plan and reminds us of the basics that can be easily lost in our busy lives. With this renewed perspective on your parenting responsibilities, you will no longer be confused between rights and privileges.

The Brat Stops Here! empowers parents with a program that makes sense, restores honor to family life, and most importantly, maintains the dignity of our children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing that could have ever happened to us!
The Guide to Honest Parenting was recommended to me by a lady who saw me having trouble with my son in the parking lot of a restaurant. She told me that it had worked for her son and his wife, who had used it with her grandson.I bought it and decided to give it a serious try... after all, I'd tried almost everything else, from counseling to medications prescribed by doctors, to a couple of natural remedies, to other books and programs.

The information is not only easy to understand, but it also MAKES SENSE.And, beyond that, it actually WORKS!Now, I'm not saying that my son and my younger daughter (who has fewer issues) changed overnight. And, we still have some things to work on.But this book has truly improved my relationship with them, so that they TALK with me now, hardly ever yell or have tantrums anymore, and my son is doing 100% better in school... both with grades and behavior.Sometimes, knowledge is power... and knowing what to do or say is a HUGE advantage. I can't even put into words how much stress has been lifted from my shoulders by just knowing how to respond to anything that he says or does.I don't worry quite as much, it's a lot easier to get both of them to cooperate with me, and things are basically happier at home.We really went for years without laughing or having any good times together... and that's back now.

It's also good for getting parents on the same page.I'm divorced, but their father (who was resistant to therapists and most anything else I tried) read the chapter on parents working together, and he's been working WITH me on it.I never thought that would happen.

I belong to a small support group of parents that's very informal.6 other families bought this book, after I told them that it was working for me and my 2 kids. There are a mixture of single parents and couples in the group.Out of the 7 families (counting us) who decided to use the book, only 1 mom said that she wasn't seeing as much progress as she had hoped for, and I think that's because she has quite a few emotional problems of her own, and a bit of a negative attitude... and just isn't able to follow through with things.(I think we all understand that some children and teens who have problems, also have parents with their own set of issues to work on.So, not everyone has the same ability to learn or to work with their kids). The rest of us have all been using "honest parenting," every day!

Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend this book, and one GREAT thing about it is that the author offers his email address and will actually talk with you by phone, if you have specific questions.I did have a "phone coaching" session with him, and it was REALLY helpful. You just don't get to read a book and then talk to the person who wrote it about your specific situation very often.

So, good luck to everyone, and if you have some hope and energy left, this book should be very helpful to you and your kiddos!

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY DISAPPOINTED- SELF PUBLISHED BOOK
I am very disappointed in this book.First of all it is a "self published" book of very poor quality. No publisher ever bought into its content and if I had noticed that before I bought it that should have been my first clue to look elsewhere.I am surprised amazon would sell this.I could make my own book of better quality at Shutterfly. As to the content I was shocked to find out his parenting methods involve NO DISCIPLINE - no time outs, no grounding, no sending them to their room, no taking anything away - nothing - and not just for teenagers - for all ages as far as I can tell - though admittedly I didn't read the entire book. The author appears to have no children of his own and it shows. He encourages the parent to teach "Self discipline" by talking calmly all issues through - communication and through "natural consequences."You are supposed to refuse to do anything for them - no food, don't let them sleep or go anywhere etc. until they have talked to you about the situation and "role played" what they should have done differently.I just don't think this is a realistic method of shaping behavior in all circumstances. Real life is full of negative behavior incentives - the policeman just doesn't have a talk to us about the dangers of speeding - we get a ticket. For parents looking for help in behavior problems in children I would look elsewhere. For behavior trouble not clearly one where a therapist is required, I have found "10 Days to a Less Defiant Child" by Jeffrey Bernstein much more helpful, and for all kids, not so much unusually defiant ones, "1-2-3 Magic" by Thomas Phelan. This will go in the trash.

Hi!
If you're reading this, then you probably have a challenging child or teen. My wife and I read a few other parenting books, tried several "programs," a therapist, Psychiatrists, medications, and "natural remedies" from a health food store before we found The Guide to Honest Parenting. I HONESTLY can't tell you in words how much sense this book makes! It's given me a sense of knowing how to respond to anything my son does or says. We've seen progress in his behavior that we never thought we'd see. It's very easy to read and understand, too. Wish we'd had it a couple of years ago! Good luck to you!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Strong-Willed Children
I think perhaps some parents understanding of strong-willed and the author's might be different. Anyone who has a truly strong-will child might find this book LESS than useful. It is program that would probably work with a very mildly strong-willed child and like the other reviewer said, it is probably good for EVERY child (who is not strong-willed). A chair in the hallway for a time-out spot is NOT feasible for seriously strong-willed kids. Nor is sending them to your bedroom. Strong-willed kids don't stay in chairs in the hallway and they rip apart rooms they are sent to for time-outs (often while you are holding the door closed b/c there is no chance they will stay in there on their own). If this was not promoted for strong-willed kids, I would say it is a good plan. It might also work if you start really early with your child. We have been using Magic 1-2-3 for a long time with our child and have pretty good results. We still have explosive episodes more than I would like and this book didn't offer me anything new or special for my strong-willed little girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is good for EVERY child
I'd been having some problems with my mostly well-behaved 4 year old daughter, and I felt as if things were suddenly getting out of my control. I tried time-outs, I tried all sorts of things. Sometimes they worked, but I still felt that our relationship was not as fun and close as it had been, and I worried that she was starting to be too sassy and rude (typical 4 year old behavior, really). After a bit of research I bought this book. And I have to tell you, it has worked wonders. Once I read the opening chapter, I realized that my daughter is far from what they describe as "strong willed." I worried at first that this would mean the book wasn't for us. But no need to worry - this way of dealing with a young child seems to work with any kid. And *almost* immediately! My husband was out of town during the first week, and he came back and was very impressed. He went away again a few weeks later, and came back to me raving about how much I love this book and how much I needed him to read at least a few chapters of it. And he admitted that the difference in her behavior was impressive. Now, I don't want anyone thinking I have a perfect daughter (she's wonderful, smart and funny, but she still has her moments) but the difference this book has made is well worth the price. And I enjoy being around her a heck of a lot more than I had been, and I think she feels the same way. If you're having issues, feeling like nothing is working, give this a shot. The chapters on rewarding and ignoring were the most important for us, but again, I don't think she was especially strong willed so YMMV. ... Read more
