Robert L. Hendren, D.O. is editor of this paperback. He is a child and adolescent psychiatrist currently at the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry, and was formerly at Albuqurque, New Mexico. The book is a compilation of professional reviews on treating externalizing behavior disorders that include oppositionality, defiance of authority, spitefulness, vengefulness, and juvenile delinquency. It is applicable to both psychiatry, law and criminal justice. While scholarly, it is also insightful. There are minimal references provided. The paperback lacks in unity and continuity in its chapters. It is so expansive in its approach that its application becomes difficult. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I use it in my practice--love it.
Ihave used this program with 8 children together with their parents and I have had really good results with it. The nine chapters (that are lessons) go through stages, first teaching kids how to recognize their thoughts and how they connect with and create feelings. Later chapter help kids to challenge those irrational beliefs and then ways to ignore them and replace them. For some kids the pace (one chapter a week) is just right, for other too slow, so you can double up the chapters or skip parts. Great homework pages too, which not only reinforce the reading but help you to make sure that they are 'getting it'. I make copies of the pages and pass them out as we go through it.

This method of doing it with a parent is important because they can do it together and the parent learns the ideas and then knows how to intervene when the child's thinking (or their own) gets off track.

Cons: I always explain that it was written by an Englishman and that there is some language (What's a dust bin?) and grammar that is different.

Also I try to partner with the parent that the child takes after, but if they are too depressed and impatient, it wont work. I will go with the other parent or do it with the child my self, but have separate meetings with parents.

Highly recommended.

Product Description
This volume is the second revision (third edition) of one of the classic texts in child development and the analysis of behavior. First published in 1961 and revised in 1978, this volume is now entirely updated, especially including new material on verbal interactions both from the point of view of the speaker and the listener. It takes a thoroughly natural science approach to what is popularly called child psychology.

Authored by Sidney W. Bijou, widely considered one of the fathers of applied behavioral psychology, this book is intended for the student with a limited background in psychology who is embarking on a study of human development, particularly child development. It provides one of the most succinct available presentations of basic behavioral terms and principles, and provides many examples of the application of these principles to the understanding of children. Like the earlier versions it can also be used as a primer of behavioral principles in a variety of courses related to human behavioral development and learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This book is an excellent resource to all who work with children with Autism. I've had experience with people with autism for many years and this book was an inspiration of ideas to help my students in my classroom.
I recommend this highly to anyone!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Help and Grounded Details
I found this book to be one of the most helpful I've ordered in the course of three years of personal research and work with my son.I knew that the school my son attends was using picture schedules, but I had not been able to fully understand the theory and practice of this.

While producing and using a picture schedule can take a great deal of time--training for independence is quite challenging--the book establishes the theory of the practice in plain language. This is definitely a must read for parents and care-givers, including volunteers in church or community child-care or respite programs.

In addition to clear explanation of the theory and use of picture schedules, the images included work to sharpen the concepts--also a plus for those of us are more visually inclined. The tips for starting small and working up, as well as tips for using picture schedules of varying levels of sophistication are also priceless.

I'm using this with some of my other (read neuro-typical) children, and it works beautifully with them, as well.Like signing with your baby, this is a great step in establishing routines and independence in little ones, and even older children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step-by-Step Activity Schedules
This book is a must have for anyone wishing to implement an activity schedule. This book was required reading for a teaching children with autism course at UMASS. Not only is it extremely informative, guiding the reader through each detail designing the schedule and implementing the schedule, it is also an easy, quick read that I refer back to often. Additionally, the authors are well published in scientific journals. Great resource for parents, teachers, and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
A great book for teaching life skills to children with autism.Useful for the young and old child, the new and experienced teacher.Very detailed and helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Glowing Review
This book is necessary for anybody looking to implement or improve an already existing activity schedule. Although McClannahan and Krantz are experts in the field of behavior analysis, they wrote the books so that you don't have to be a near genius I.Q to understand it. The book is perfect for parents and teachers as well as students studying behavior analysis or special education teachers interested in working with autistic children. The first chapter is dedicated to discussing what an activity schedule is and how your child or student will benefit. The subsequent chapter delves into the pre-requisite skills the child will need prior to beginning. The authors explain each pre-requisite skill, why it is necessary and provide examples of each skill. The next few chapters discuss how to implement the activity schedule as well as how to measure progress. They really left nothing out. Toward the end of the book, they explained what to do when the activity schedule is mastered and provided a great deal of detail on the dos and don'ts. It is clear, that the McClannahan and Krantz really want readers to be successful at creating and teaching activity schedules. They have also co-authored Teaching Conversation to Children with Autism, which is also worth checking out. My hats off to them on such an awesome educational easy to read and understand how to book. ... Read more

Product Description
A new approach for dealing with the most common--and seemingly intractable--battles of will between parents and children. Authoritative and sound, but lighthearted and guilt-free, all of the authors' suggestions work toward building a child's self-esteem.

Two simple but powerful ideas stand behind this book's advice for coping with children's behavior problems: you can change your child's behavior by changing the way you react to theirs; and you must accept that much of what unnerves parents is actually appropriate to the various stages of a child's development.

Change Your Child's Behavior by Changing Yours tackles thirteen particularly difficult situations that prompt most tugs-of-wills, including conflicts involving bedtime, dressing, eating, going places, shopping, and sibling rivalry. Each chapter opens with a section called "Sound Familiar?" that describes a scenario parents will quickly recognize. Authors Chernofsky and Gage then identify the development stage that is prompting the distressing behavior, help parents to relate the child's behavior in a somewhat parallel situation, and offer strategies for coping with and changing the situation for the better. ... Product Description

Why do kids do the things they do? What can teachers do to manage it all?

The truth is that there isn’t a simple 1-2-3 method for understanding and managing all behaviors or allchildren. There is, however, a way to give young children the tools needed to grow and thrive on their own.

Developed and tested in the classroom, Beyond Behavior Management is a strength-based approach to guiding and managing young children’s behavior by helping them build and use essential life skills. Eight chapters seamlessly blend six social and emotional skills into the daily life of the early childhood classroom to help children exhibit more prosocial behaviors, work better as a community, and become excited and active learners. Life skills include the following:

Attachment—“I have a grown-up who cherishes me and keeps me safe.”
Affiliation—“I am a part of the group, not apart from the group.”
Self-regulation—“I can manage my emotions and am in control of my behaviors.”
Problem solving—“I can solve problems and resolve conflicts.”
Initiative—“I am growing and changing and learning new things.”
Celebration of self and others—“I have unique qualities to contribute, and so do you.”

Appendices include reflective questions and charts, as well as scripts for interacting with children and adults.

Perfect for today’s diverse classroom, Beyond Behavior Management is a helpful and inclusive resource for any preschool–K teacher searching for a way to make the classroom a comfortable place for every child to learn and grow!

Jenna Bilmes works as a mental health specialist with Southwest Human Development Center. As a consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense Dependent Schools and Sonoma State University, she develops teacher manuals for social and emotional education. Ms. Bilmes lives in Tempe, Arizona.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for educators and parents
This book is a must have for anyone who wants to be a great teacher or a great parent...

4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Behavior Management
The book was in very good shape. I was recently at a conference presented by the author. Ii had wanted to purchase the book and it was not available so I was happy to get it on Amazon for a very good price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for early childhood educators
I am beginning my first year teaching this fall, and I will have a kindergarten classroom. When I got this book I was so excited because it aligns very closely to my philosophies on behavior management. It addresses a wide range of issues that may arise and gives detailed, systematic information on dealing with those issues from a social/emotional standpoint.Besides that, the book is so easy to read and packed with valuable information--not a lot of filler material and redundancy.I literally completed this book in one sitting, because as soon as I began to read, I couldn't put it down!Since then, I have re-read several pieces from the text and appendices. I plan to use this as the cornerstone of my management system this fall.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for preschool teachers
I have found this book to be very insightful in reading the behaviours of children and young people. I am a high school teacher and it is very obvious when students don't have a chance to develop these six life skills. The ideas for activities to promote the skills were fun and easy to implement and made a lot of common sense. I feel inclined to send this book to all the local small people schools. Very easy reading too. Some generalisations were made however at the end of each chapter were lists that made it easy to research further if you need to.
Definitely a great find

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Behavior Management: The Six Life Skills Children Need to Thrive in Today's World
This book is amazing! I have been looking for a book like this to guide me in teaching children the social/emotional skills they need to thrive in my classroom and in life. It is packed full of information, sample scripts, and activities that will help you successfully implement its ideas and principles in your classroom. Although it was skillfully written for use in the classroom, parents could also learn a lot from it. It is a must read for all preschool/kindergarten teachers. Read This Book! ... Read more

Product Description
Making Sense of Children's Thinking and Behavior offers parents and professionals a tool for understanding children with neurological differences. These children have an atypical view of the world, unique to their particular disability, which can make their behavior confusing and, at times, challenging. Often, the child's actions are misunderstood and, consequently, they are unfairly punished.

An individualized approach to understanding a child's thought processes can help to resolve these problems. The authors' Systematic Tool for Analyzing Thinking (STAT) offers such an approach. It provides a step-by-step method for understanding a child's behavior by revealing the thought processes behind it. By viewing a situation from the child's perspective, the root of the problem can be identified and one can then effectively address the difficult behavior. Case studies are used to describe the twelve common deficit areas, demonstrating to the reader how to apply the STAT in everyday situations.

This practical book is an invaluable resource for parents and professionals working with children with NLD, Asperger's, HFA, PDD-NOS, and other neurological differences. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into the mind of someone with spectrum disorders
My son was recently diagnosed PDD-NOS, and this is one of the books I bought for research.I feel like much of my time with him is spent trying to understand how he is thinking or why he does the things he does, and this book provides really good insight into the mind of someone with a spectrum disorder. The "theory of mind" concept really resonated wi me and really helped put my sons actions into perspective.Excellent book, written with lots of examples, and very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool
I've been looking for a book to help explain my child's behavior to teachers. This book demystifies the behavior of kids with NLD, Asperger's and similar neurological differences. It offers great suggestions for how to effectively respond to the inevitable conflicts that will arise due to misunderstandings. So often these kids look very typical and go along just fine, and then surprise their teachers and peers with some unexpected comment or behavior. The authors give an excellent problem solving model to use to help adults figure out what went awry and how to help the child learn a more adaptive response.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt and Informative
I am a step-parent of a 15 year old son with NLD.I knew for years that there were issues and couldn't put a finger on it.Then a change in psychiatrists came through with what it was and then the questions were answered. Most of the questions anyhow.Having raised 2 sons of my own as a single parent you think that you have this parenting thing down, well not so with a child with a disability. This book has helped in so many ways to not only answer some of those still unknown questions, but gives a lot of help in dealing with the many issues that surround children with NLD.The information presented in this book is from a mother's point of view with a child with NLD and it really hits home as she discusses the feelings that go along with raising her child. This has opened a whole new world for myself, my stepson and for my husband as we look forward to a more positive and productive life for our son!

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide for any special education collection
This step-by-step guide for understanding children diagnosed with Asperger's, HFA and other neurological differences provides the authors' own tool for analyzing thinking, offering a step-by-step set of insights into analyzing the thought processes behind a child's behavior. From case studies to help describe the twelve common deficit areas to applying the STAT formula to common scenarios, this is a practical resource for parents and professionals working with kids, and an invaluable guide for any special education collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book should be in everyones library that is dealing with a child on the autism spectrum! It defines how they think differently from the normal neurological child.Excellent book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars VERY Detailed Look At Assessing Young Children
Even though I would suggest Sue Wortham's ASSESSMENT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION or McAffee/Leong's ASSESSING AND GUIDING YOUNG CHILDREN'S DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING as primary resources for this topic, Bentzen's book offers much value in its very detailed nature if used properly. If used improperly, it may overwhelm a student of early childhood professionalism.

Taking a developmentally appropriate perspective, the text is focused around observation. After decent assessment introductory and child development chapters, it jumps right into setting the foundation of assessment singularly around observation. The next nine chapter then detail different recording methods and approaches (i.e. anecdotal records, checklists, time sampling, etc.).In an intriguing change of pass, the books final several chapters detail observing children by developmental level (i.e newborn, infant, young child, and mulitple stages of school age children). This is a rare approach to assessment with developmental details that you may not find from your typical assessment text.

To be frank, I use observation as my primary assessment method with my children. Unfortunately, though, it is this very monomial devotion to observation that makes Bentzen's book limited, for early childhood assessment is more than observation. It's writing samples, self portraits, parent interviews, and other authentic techniques. To ignore those topics, and just focus on observation breaks a general pedagogical piece of advice many early childhood professionals are given: always use several different assessment techniques.

In the end, this extremely valuable resource is just that: an expert resource on professionally and thoroughly observing young children (not necessarily early childhood assessemtn) albeit a VERY GOOD resource that may be worth purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
As a teacher of small children and a trainer, I use and teach observation skills all the time. I found this book to be very thorough.
It covers everything from an introduction to growth & development, general guidlines for observing children, and recording methods for children from birth to age 8. This book also includes many examples and charts. It makes a great addition to a teacher or childcare workers bookshelf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical rehabilitation
This book gives practical rehabilitation exercises that parents or teachers can use to help rehabilitate kids with retained primitive reflexes and developmental delays. It's excellent for anyone - medical or otherwise. This is a good one for teachers in fact, to help them to understand how motor skills and learning are linked.

2-0 out of 5 stars Catatonically Dry
This is an extremely dry wandering text. There is no conciseness and very little "How To" material in this book. The book wanders through a laundry list of what-ifs and anecdotes without offering actionable ideas.I was very disappointed by this book.Anyone who is busy will want to look for a different book, reserving this one as a library reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does this work?
This book has many MANY practical ideas for improving a child's balance and coordination and body awareness and, well, you can "Look Inside!" and read the table of contents.

I just got the book from the library and am reading it.It is very accessible for people like me who know nothing about physical therapy.I haven't tried any of the activities on my kids yet.Nor have I tried them on myself, for that matter... Lord knows I could use some balance and coordination therapy.I don't know if this stuff works, but I can assume it does since the authors are experts with years of experience.Their premise seems a little bogus to me: that some kids haven't grown out of infantile reflexes, so they have to get down in infantile stances and start all over. But again, I don't know anything about it.

I give the book four stars because it is very accessible and has many practical, inexpensive activities.

I give it only four stars because the second chapter came very close to offending me.The author implies (and sometimes overtly states) that poor motor development is the result of parental neglect or a lack of stimulating opportunities.Sometimes, or even often, that is probably true. But I would guess there are plenty of people who are just genetically klutzy. And then there autistic children who are likely to find one repetitive activity that stimulates them and fixate on that--poor motor skills there are not a result of parental neglect, but of the child's disinterest in trying whatever opportunities the parent provides. In short, I didn't find it helpful to be blamed for the problem. But since most of the book focuses on remedying the problem, I think it will be a useful resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Optimal Learning Readiness
An absolute must for anyone involved in pre- and foundation phase education.Cheatum gives a concise and clear understanding of how the human mind is formed though movement and how easy to do activities can help the child attain optimal learning readiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource...
I really enjoyed this book. The authors know how to explain their material without using a lot of technical jargon. If you have read and enjoyed "The Out of Sync Child", I would recommend this as Part 2.It goes a little more in-depth and has lots of great ideas for activities. Very Smart! ... Read more

Product Description

This comprehensive volume reviews and synthesizes a vast body of knowledge on maladaptive aggression and antisocial behavior in youth. Written from a clinical-developmental perspective, and integrating theory and research from diverse fields, the book examines the origins, development, outcomes, and treatment of this serious problem in contemporary society. Major topics addressed include the types and prevalence of aggressive and antisocial behavior; the interplay among neuropsychiatric, psychosocial, and neurobiological processes in etiology; known risk and protective factors; gender variables; and why and how some children "grow out of" conduct disturbances. Chapters also discuss current approaches to clinical assessment and diagnosis and review the evidence for widely used psychosocial and pharmacological interventions.

Product Description
Beyond Consequences, Logic, and Control covers in detail the effects of trauma on the body-mind and how trauma alters children's behavioral responses. The first four chapters help parents and professionals clearly understand the neurological research behind the basic model given in this book, deemed, 'The Stress Model.' While scientifically based in research, it is written in an easy to understand and easy to grasp format for anyone working with or parenting children with severe behaviors. The next seven chapters are individually devoted to seven behaviors typically seen with attachment-challenged children. These include lying, stealing, hoarding and gorging, aggression, defiance, lack of eye contact, and yes, even a chapter that talks candidly about how parents appear hostile and angry when they work to simply maintain their families from reaching complete states of chaos. Each of these chapters talks in depth on these specific behaviors and gives vivid and contrasting examples of how this love-based approach works to foster healing and works to develop relationships, as opposed to the fear-based traditional attachment parenting approaches that are being advocated in today's attachment field. The authors end with a Parenting Bonus Section: true testimonials from parents who have been able to make significant changes in their homes with this model of parenting, giving real-life examples of how they have been able to find the healing, peace, and love that they had been seeking prior to working through the techniques outlined in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
This book opened my eyes to why consequences don't work with some children, and actually serve to exacerbate the problems. In implementing the changes in this book I've seen immediate improvement in behavior and in home life.Highly recommend even if you don't have the diagnosis of Attachment Disorder.I can see this book helping a wide range of problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really?
I have worked with children with severe emotional and behavioral problems for 15 years in several capacities. While I agree the root cause of most of their behavior is fear and that unconditional love is a necessity for them, I also have found that children need boundaries, limits and consequences (logical and natural) to learn and thrive. The lack of emphasis on the later completely turned me off this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought!
This book is written for parents/guardians of kids/teens who have been through a traumatic experience, not for parents/guardians of difficult kids/teens, although that is how everything I read about the book before I purchased it led me to believe!I can't say much about the book itself because I have a difficult child, not a child who has experienced a traumatic event.Just wanted everyone else to know EXACTLY who the book was written for before they spent their money on it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally bias and false in regards to traditional RAD therapy!
My husband I adopted three girls from the Ukraine 3 yr ago and sought help w/ RAD after the girls were w/ our family 6mo. We had 4 bio kids and these girls were in between the ages of the others falling at 6, 9 and 13 when we adopted them.We were finally able to get RAD counseling w/ a wonderful group hand trained by Nancy Thomas out of CO and went to their seminars, attended their counseling and read over 10 books that were referred to us all in the traditional view of RAD therapy. The way Beyond Logic... describes traditional therapy is full of falsehoods and is never what we experienced in the year we attended the counseling, information from the seminar or books we read!We are offended that they would describe the type of counselors and parents who use the traditional view as harsh, controlling and out to break the child into cruel submission causing the child more trauma in their life. We would have never had subjected our children or ourselves to the type of counseling they say happens w/ tradational views.

This book claims to be biblically based, but doesn't portray that at all describing how there should be not even a mention of lying or stealing until hours or days later once it occurs!Well according to the books claims, won't that stress the child out cause them to return to their "fear" state when later discussing their behaviors? This book has other areas where it contradicts itself as well as biblical teaching. We exprienced loving, nuturing, bonding, attachment therapy w/ playing, holding, games and talking a traditional RAD counselor integrating natural consequences. This is the way the real world opperates as well as the way the bible teaches us.After all, why would Christ of had to die for us if all of our behaviors came from our past fears and should be excused away and they could mended w/ just love and reassurance especially the love and reassurance of eternal life from our heavenly father which is the purest and most precious of all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Con,logicic and control
I have only read 1/2 so far ,but i am very impressed.
Adoptive mother of a girl adopted at the age of 12years.

It talks about all the issues related to attachement issues, eg lying, stealing , controland lack of consequences by your child.

I love how it gives tradtionalattachment views and a new alternative view.
Personally it has given me the out look to decrease my reactions and stress levels to my every day ( the above world).

5-0 out of 5 stars The book every parent and doctor should read!
I can't say enough about this book.As a nurse, it has all of the medical information I am looking for and as a parent (son with ADD) it is very informative and easy to read. This is a book that can be utilized from cover to cover or to look up specific topics. It does an amazing job of explaining how every child with ADD or ADHD is an individual and discusses all of the factors that may be influencing the severity of our child's problems.Best of all, this book does a very good job of listing many treatment alternatives, the studies and results done on each treatment, and in what setting the treatment is appropriate.Medications are discussed but by no means are they the first "go to" treatment mentioned. At the back of the book are tools for parents, teachers and medical personnel to use as you navigate the best options to help your child. After reading this book, I have been able to work with my son's teachers and implement simple things in the classroom so that he can be successful and proud of himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is excellent for parents, teachers and administrators. There are wonderful ideas to help in the classroom and at home.I would strongly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, practical behavior manual for parents and practitioners
This is one of the best manuals for my practice with kids with ADHD that I have found.I use this daily and have found immeasureable help in parenting suggestions for parents who are struggling.I am really impressed with this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Through and comprehensive
There's certainly no dearth of information or misinformation on ADHD available to the public. However, compiling a comprehensive knowledge base for the newly initiated is a challenge.I came across this book after reading nearly everything the public library had to offer on ADHD.In this book Dr. Flick succinctly puts together an excellent resource on all the evidence-based information on ADHD.He also includes sections on "alternative" treatments that will appeal to some but is careful to indicate where science meets the marketting.

If you're new to ADHD this tome may be a little intimidating. The writing is here is a bit more dry than some other good sources on the subject like Barkley, Rosenthal, Phelan or Hallowell. Also as with all books on ADHD published before 2000-2002 some of the details on medication are out of date. The only serious omission is an explicit section on choosing good professionals to help you manage ADHD.But if you read and assimilate all the information in this book you should become a good judge of whether or not every member of your treatment team is functioning well.

If you are only buying one book on ADHD to keep on your shelf at home this is it.

2-0 out of 5 stars ADD parent not satisfied!
I purchased this *kit* based on the fact it had ideas, activities ... etc.Maybe me having ADD I missed some info on it?When I got it I was surprised to find it was a book! Not a *kit* at all.So I will probably never use it ... unless I was to purchase a copier machine and print off items as needed. I have read some of it and it had good ideas and info.Just not what I had purchased it for at all!=( ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Elementary Age Book !
My son has high-functioning Aspergers and like all parents I want him to have all the skills necessary to succeed. With that being said, I reviewed a bunch of books, ordered them from the library and tried them out. This is the only one I liked so much I went out and purchased my own copy. It is perfect for ages 5 - 12 years with High functioning Aspergers. My five year old daughter loves it just because it is fun and made her think, my 8 year old son who has Aspergers had trouble with some things but others he got right away. Definitely a good learning book and works for both teachers and partents alike. Even young school age children without Special Needs would learn alot from this book.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there is a newer version of the book which I heard is even better and when I order that one, if I like it I will give it five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
As a therapist working with children (pre k through 6th grade) with various mental disorders and behavior problems I searched high and low to find interventions that target specific behaviors. It's not always easy to talk to younger children in a manner in which they understand. This book provides interventions that specifically teach children social behaviors that are are expected of them while they are in school and in the home. The interventions are simple enough for younger children and can prompt conversation for the older children. This book is filled with enough interventions to work with children throughout the school year.

4-0 out of 5 stars May be Helpful for Certain Special Needs Populations
I am a special education teacher who used this book while teaching middle school students, (high functioning autism, emotional disability, non-verbal learning disability, Asperger's Syndrome) who have social intelligences that range from 1st-3rd grade. The book was used as a guide throughout the year with other activities that I created to foster growth in social-emotional areas of learning. The students found the worksheet scenarios relatable and easy to understand. I would have to agree with another commenter that the children depicted and names of children in the book fulfill stereotypes of races and nationalities. Being an educator, I took the opportunity to teach my children about cultural awareness and breaking down stereotypes depicted in the book. The students were able to identify and discuss the illustrator's point of view about his perceptions and stereotypes of people. We created are own social story worksheets with better representations of people. The book is best used as a guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Social Skills book
This book is helpful for the social skills group that I run, however the book has worksheets, not activities to do with the kids.It is mostly focused on behavior in school. It is a good supplemental tool for me.
