5-0 out of 5 stars Bought for my son
Book was shipped on time and given for christmas. The kid I sent off to college came back a some type of super human genius who actually understands what is in this book.

As for me, I don't really have a clue, but he said he needed it.

4-0 out of 5 stars usefull chemical engineering handbook for life
this book has all the information on everything chemical engineering related that you might need to know for your entire lifetime. Highly recommend this to any engineer or any other discipline out there who wants to have ALOT of relevant and useful information in one book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caution! Not compatible with Windows Vista!
I just got a new computer with Windows Vista. When I tryed to run my Perry's Handbook Electronic Version, I got an error message: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running.Check your computer's operating system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."
DO NOT buy this product if you have Windows Vista!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great version of this classic handbook
As a Chemical Engineer, I reference Perry's Handbook weekly. The CD-ROM version is much more accessible to those of us in this new computer saavy generation. The searchability (index? what's that?) and interactivity make this a worth-while buy, especially if you don't already have a paper copy ofPerry's. You can select data from a table and paste into other applications, instead of staring at the tiny print of a huge book and typing all the numbers by hand. You can also find topics quickly by the contents (which are linked to other parts of the book) and the search features. All in all, a good buy for me. WARNING! This is ONLY compatible with Windows machines. A Mac user will be able to see the information, but not use the search functions or the interactive data tables.

4-0 out of 5 stars An unbeatable resource
Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook handbook is really a mixed bag, and how useful it turns out to be is really a matter of what kind of information you are looking for. I've always felt that this is the definitive book if you want raw facts and numbers. The entire volume is crammed with technical data that, for some, can't be found elsewhere. All the groundwork is covered; conversion factors, symbols, kinetics, interdisciplinary studies (several), thermodynamics, and just about anything else that coincides with the field of engineering. On a personal level, I've used it on several occasions when collecting field data, but its uses go well beyond that. For the sheer amount of information covered, the volume remains fairly well organized, and never veers too far from what you are researching.

The downside is that it can often seem overwhelming to students or those with passing involvement or interest. Despite the dependable presentation, it can be difficult to understand for people who haven't been brought up to speed on the variation of the topic they wish to examine. Even though the all the data is present, understanding it won't be easy until you've familiarized yourself and comprehend the tables and usage. Some claim that the book was written primarily for academics, though I don't see that as true. Anyone can use the book effectively once they get the hang of it.

Even though it might have some drawbacks, I truly can't see how anyone in the field of Chemical Engineering could not have this book on their shelf. It is the ultimate source of chemical data and interdisciplinary studies. If you don't yet own this one, I really can't see how you can go wrong in purchasing it. ... Read more

Product Description
The fifth edition of "Plant Design and Economics for Chemical Engineers" is a major revision of the popular fourth edition. There are new chapters on process synthesis, computer-aided design, and design of chemical reactors. A traditionally strong feature of the text, economic analysis, has been revamped and updated. Another strength, equipment sizing and cost estimation, is updated and expanded as well. These improvements also reflect changes in equipment availability. The numerous real examples throughout the book include computer or hand solutions, and often both. There is a new increased emphasis on computer use in design, economic evaluation, and optimization. Concepts, strategies, and approaches to computer use are featured. These concepts are not tied to particular software programs and therefore apply to wide a range of applications software, of both current and future release. This widely used text is now more useful than ever, providing a "one-stop" guide to chemical process design and evaluation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The book came as they said it would, and in a very timely manner, not to mention, it came from over seas. No Complaints, just respect.

3-0 out of 5 stars good information said in too many paragraphs
For an undergraduate chemical engineering student, this book has many useful charts of utility costs, safety indices, etc.About those charts, I can only say good things, because it feels a lot better citing a textbook than citing web pages all the time. The other information in the book is useful, but not presented in a useful way.I cannot read this book word by word. It's too dry. What I would rather read is a bulleted list in each chapter with definitions and examples of things like HAZOP and fault tree analysis.Because really, when I finish my design class and I need to look up information on some design principal, I'm going to want an easy to read bulleted list, not a paragraph.I think this book could have about one third the pages that way, which would make it more readable and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Seriver
The book came very fast and it was exactly like it was described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a math text for ChemE's!
This is an excellent and focused book for graduate ChemE's.Lots of the problems are the types you would see in graduate transport and controls courses.Everything is written with ChemE problems in mind. It's not like other textbooks, like Kreyzig's, that simply put out a bunch of generic problems to solve; still, Kreyzig's textbook is an engineering math classic, and you should have it on-hand in case you need some extra explanations. It is certainly better than the text of Varma and Morbidelli, which tends to move off-topic quickly and answer several unnecessary problems.

This text by Rice and Do is the best I've seen, but it is really hard to get a hold of.Good luck getting it, as it is certainly a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book ...for Process Modeling Engineers

5-0 out of 5 stars Any practicing Chemical Engineer must have this book
This book is a work horse. It is extremly practical and to the point.Important concepts and design equations are laid out in a concise and easy to read format. This book noteworthy for the depth of the material covered and the incredibly succint delivery of that information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful but read the fine print
This reference is highly useful for consulting work. It has its limits. A true rule-of-thumb book for chemical engineers would require volumes so I would say the author did well, hence the 5 stars. A good example of the limits of this book are what he does with knock-out pots. He limits his presentation to reflux drums instead of expanding his study to KO pots in general. The section on reflux drums is difficult to use because the tables presented for liquid holding times is difficult to understand, let alone use. The reader would be tempted to use this method for KO pots unless he sees the fine print in the corner of the page. Look for these caveates.

The index is good, which is critical for such a reference. If I had a choice between buying Hicks or Branan, it would be a hard choice. I would probably advise the cheaper book, Branan. Besides, Hicks, "Standard Handbook of Engineering Calculations," covers a broad range of engineering calculations. Branan is more focused on chemical engineering. It is unfortunate that it is not expanded to cover more of the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Question about Units used (US and Metric?)
Hi

I do not have a copy of the current edition, but a year ago I investigated purchasing a previous edition. What deterred me at the time was that all tips, tricks and equations etc. were in US units and thus only of very limited appeal to the Metric world.

A question to a reviewer of the 4th edition - has the book become "international", i.e. quoting metric and US units? If not, it shall remain of limited desirability in the free world.

5-0 out of 5 stars From an Industrial Practitioner - This is an Excellent Quick Reference
This book is an excellent and priceless reference on Process Equipment Fundamentals and Quick Calculations for any engineer or practitioner working in the process industries. I am an Electronic Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. As a result I have been involved with Chemical Engineering issues in a day to day basic.

I have found this book to be an excellent tool aid to analyze operational problems that affect process performance.

Chemical engineers working in operations and design for the process industries will find this book most useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE books for Chemical Engineers
This is one of the few MUST HAVE books for Chemical Engineers doing process engineering. When I travel (for work) I always take "Transport Phenomena" (aka BSL), The GPA Databook and "Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers".Rules of Thumb... is a great reference for process design and trouble shooting field problems.

A Practical Tip: The best thing to do with "Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers" is to carefuly remove the binding and put it into a 3-hole notebook (e.g., the GPA databook) and then file all the classic process design articles with the appropriate chapters. ... Read more

The Chemical Engineer's Practical Guide to Contemporary Fluid Mechanics

Since most chemical processing applications are conducted either partially or totally in the fluid phase, chemical engineers need a strong understanding of fluid mechanics. Such knowledge is especially valuable for solving problems in the biochemical, chemical, energy, fermentation, materials, mining, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, polymer, and waste-processing industries.

Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers, Second Edition, with Microfluidics and CFD, systematically introduces fluid mechanics from the perspective of the chemical engineer who must understand actual physical behavior and solve real-world problems. Building on a first edition that earned Choice Magazine's Outstanding Academic Title award, this edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect the field's latest advances.

This second edition contains extensive new coverage of both microfluidics and computational fluid dynamics, systematically demonstrating CFD through detailed examples using FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics. The chapter on turbulence has been extensively revised to address more complex and realistic challenges, including turbulent mixing and recirculating flows.

Part I offers a clear, succinct, easy-to-follow introduction to macroscopic fluid mechanics, including physical properties; hydrostatics; basic rate laws for mass, energy, and momentum; and the fundamental principles of flow through pumps, pipes, and other equipment. Part II turns to microscopic fluid mechanics, which covers

  • Differential equations of fluid mechanics
  • Viscous-flow problems, some including polymer processing
  • Laplace's equation, irrotational, and porous-media flows
  • Nearly unidirectional flows, from boundary layers to lubrication, calendering, and thin-film applications
  • Turbulent flows, showing how the k/ε method extends conventional mixing-length theory
  • Bubble motion, two-phase flow, and fluidization
  • Non-Newtonian fluids, including inelastic and viscoelastic fluids
  • Microfluidics and electrokinetic flow effects including electroosmosis, electrophoresis, streaming potentials, and electroosmotic switching
  • Computational fluid mechanics with FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics

Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers, Second Edition, with Microfluidics and CFD, includes 83 completely worked practical examples, several of which involve FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics. There are also 330 end-of-chapter problems of varying complexity, including several from the University of Cambridge chemical engineering examinations. The author covers all the material needed for the fluid mechanics portion of the Professional Engineer's examination.

The author's Web site, www.engin.umich.edu/~fmche/, provides additional notes on individual chapters, problem-solving tips, errata, and more.

it took 26 days to delivered this book ... common other vendors sent books within 5 days.So your vendor must did something wrong on this shipmnent here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
It's a good book, except that there are not enough examples, so, you have to work through the material and figure out how to solve it on your own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers
This is a simple basic book about fluidics. Not complex equations.
Not a heavy mathematics. Contain useful information about technology process with fluids - bubbles and two phase flow.
Published in 1998 has relatively old information about everything.
Positive side - has a small chapter (20 pages) about
MatLab PDE Toolbox for solving fluid mechanics problems.
No connections with COMSOL at all or any kind of simulation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wilkes
This is the worst text book I have ever used. I used it for an independent study class and my professor agreed that the topics were not rigorously explained. In addition, frequent assumptions were made without explination and referals were made to "lecture notes," which is, of course, useless if you aren't taking this man's lecture.

5-0 out of 5 stars compatible with any classroom text
I think that this book is an indispensable guide for fluid mechanics. It is easy to understand and it lets you progress with your pace with its solved examples. And one can excel in fluid mechanics by solving the suggesred problems of the book. This book not only helps you to understand the concept mathematically but gives the physical meanings of the problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Detail for Such a Small Reference
Editor Schweitzer did an exceptionally great job assembling this reference book. This is one of the first stops for design engineers making a first pass calculation of separation equipment. The book is well organized; it is divided according to elements: Part 1 -- liquid-liquid mixtures; Part 2-- liquids with dissolved solids; Part 3 --- gas (liquid) mixtures; Part 4 -- solid liquid mixtures; Part 5 ---solid mixtures and Part 6 ---gas solid mixtures.

The drawings are excellent with each variable used in a sizing equation meticulously identified. The pictures are fantastic with those old 1950-style black-and-white 3D details that show mechanical details.

Although the costs are not current, they are useful if you have an inflation index.

All of the separation methods have worked out examples. Many times, I have used this text first to develop process equipment calculations and even drawings. And, there are the references. These are completely detailed so that an engineer can reference a library for exact details on a particular subject.

The index in the back of the book and the table of contents are extremely fine and easy to use. You should have this on your engineering library---I have for 25 years.

Once more, my hat goes off to McGraw-Hill for publishing an excellent engineering reference. I hope they can maintain the standards they held true when this book was written in 1979.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for fluid mechanics
I bought the 1st ed. (1970) which suprisingly seems identical in much of the content to the 3rd (2004) as a suppliment to a truely horrible book. This book seems to elaborate on many topics, qualitative and quantitative, that either aren't covered or only "covered"in other books. Not sure why its "for Chemical Engineers" as much of the material seems to be general fluid mechanics applicable to many other fields.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good....
This book is bad.

In equation developments, it uses cartesian coordinates in a funky way.It changes them! This might not be a problem, but this book uses coordinate systems that don't follow the right-hand rule. For me this was very disturbing, because throughout my education the right-hand rule for coordinate systems was God's word.

Another thing is the example problems. When the book shows you the solution, it jumps right into numbers, without even showing you the symbolic development, or what numbers represent what variables. It expects you to infer this from the units!

N.B. I've only read the first 50 pages or so of this book, and my frustration led me to write this review. My opinions aren't supported with a complete sense of the book. Then again, the fact that even the elementary, development part of the book frustrates me could show just how bad this book will become in the latter parts.

2-0 out of 5 stars it is too superficial book.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Physical and Chemical Equilibrium for Chemical Engineers provides a thorough introduction to the basic tools of chemical engineers–physical and chemical equilibrium. It is a book for second course thermodynamics students in chemical engineering. While traditional texts combine this topic with the first thermodynamics course, Physical and Chemical Equilibrium for Chemical Engineers gives chemical engineers the rigorous yet clear treatment more advanced students and chemical engineers require.

Professor Noel de Nevers provides readers with a technically accurate and rigorous look at physical and chemical equilibrium–often called "solution thermodynamics." He presents the material in an accessible format that uses simple mathematics without sacrificing rigor. This book shows where "modern" terminology differs from "classic" terminology and covers different standard states, a common stumbling block for both students and professionals. Emphasis is placed on such up-to-date topics as aqueous solutions, electrolytes, and osmotic pressure, all of which play an important role in modern industrial processes and biotechnology. Unique coverage includes:

  • Minimization of Gibbs Free Energy
  • Vapor Pressure, the Clapayron Equation, and Single Pure Species Phase Equilibrium
  • Partial Molal Properties
  • Fugacity, Ideal and Non-Ideal Solutions, Activity, and Activity Coefficient
  • The Phase Rule

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear, excellent for self-teaching
Wonderful book! It's excellent for teaching yourself.

One minor problem - I'd condense the material of the first three chapters into one chapter, as they barely scratch the surface of calculation and aren't quite meaty/quantitative enough for my taste.

I started reading the book at Chapter 4, but, short of skipping Chapter 1 (usually on trite things like "units"), I feel my studies to be incomplete when I start at such a late chapter.

So, five stars for clarity (probably the most important characteristic of a book), but four far-less-weighted-and-therefore-negligible stars for its slow start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong buy for those who need a Book-For-Dummies intro text!
If you are new to this particular subject (=chem thermo) and feel like a beginner, although you passed your 'first year' in thermo (=eng thermo) successfully, then I 100% recommend the book by Noel de Nevers. It *really* tells you about the How's, Why's, Why Not's, What If's, etc. and in so doing, it does a terrific teaching job. Though concise, it is still comprehensive, detailed enough and fully accessible at any point at any time. Speech is easy and directed directly towards the student. You ll get the grasp and overview over the whole subject area, making you feel confident that you can master *any* problem. With its mere 474 pages it not only teaches you the essentials of what you *must* know but also gives you more comprehension and insight than any other text available. Surprisingly this short book includes various exotic chapters ('advanced subjects') found nowhere else. Short, this is truely the *very* best teaching text for real/poor learners, the *very* best intro text for beginners, and the one and only 'Understanding ChemEngThermo'-Book-For-Dummies. I can promise you an enjoyable reading, at times even fun!, and if you re a beginner feeling lost in this subject field and need/want the best teaching support available, then buy this book without hesitation. It *will* teach you a lot, and you *will* learn a lot, promised, even within a short period of time (book is a bit too concise in scope). However, please keep in mind that the DeNevers book is *not* a monograph. rated: Strong Buy if you need a Book-For-Dummies. Drawbacks: Its price is a bit expensive and if, after reading the book/passing your exams, you are not a 'beginner' anymore, you will *not* need the deNevers book any longer! That's why this book is given 4 stars only. A comparable intro text in the subject field of 'Engineering Thermo' (=first course in thermo@MechE students) would be Octave Levenspiel's 'Understanding Engineering Thermo', which is quite similar in writing style, teaching style, intro level, enjoyment/fun, learning effectiveness, etc., so if you know Levenspiel's likeable intro text and liked it, you *will* love the intro text by DeNevers, for sure! Short, *if* you need such a book (beginner looking for a book-for-dummies), then this *is* the very best on the market and you *must* buy and read it. So for you, it would be a 5-stars book, of course!

Product Description
Focusing on the application of mathematics to chemical engineering, Applied Mathematical Methods for Chemical Engineers, Second Edition addresses the setup and verification of mathematical models using experimental or other independently derived data.

An expanded and updated version of its well-respected predecessor, this book uses worked examples to illustrate several mathematical methods that are essential in successfully solving process engineering problems. The book first provides an introduction to differential equations that are common to chemical engineering, followed by examples of first-order and linear second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Later chapters examine Sturm–Liouville problems, Fourier series, integrals, linear partial differential equations (PDEs), and regular perturbation. The author also focuses on examples of PDE applications as they relate to the various conservation laws practiced in chemical engineering. The book concludes with discussions of dimensional analysis and the scaling of boundary value problems and presents selected numerical methods and available software packages.

New to the Second Edition

·         Two popular approaches to model development: shell balance and conservation law balance

·         One-dimensional rod model and a planar model of heat conduction in one direction

·         Systems of first-order ODEs

·         Numerical method of lines, using MATLAB® and Mathematica where appropriate

This invaluable resource provides a crucial introduction to mathematical methods for engineering and helps in choosing a suitable software package for computer-based algebraic applications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book. Problems with delivery.
The book was exactly what I wanted and it was in perfect condition. However, it took me 23 days to get it because USPS did not tell me that they had left a package at the office of the apartments where I leave. This is not the first time I have problems with USPS, so I suggest to the seller that you use UPS or Fedex and get a tracking number if you want your customers to be happier.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great review of useful mathematical tools
As a chemical Engineer fresh out of grad school, I must confess I was already starting to forget all those beautiful and complex mathematical models and equations studied in my 800-level classes. This book offers a thorough and useful review of these methods in order to analyze and model typical chemical engineering processes, and I am sure it will come in handy for years to come. ...
