Product Description
Virtually all job hunting experts agree that networking is the best way to find a great job. But most people don't have connections to the decision makers who do the hiring.

And "networking" books, which are mostly written by and for salespeople, suggest aggressive tactics, often confusing these with real networking. They focus on building a powerful network over the course of a lifetime. But when you need a new job, you don't have time to build a huge, powerful network. You've got to use the network you already have.

Orville Pierson, a top expert in job hunting, tells you how to succeed by effectively using your current circle of contacts. He cuts through the myths and misunderstandings to show you how millions of job hunters have networked their way to great new jobs.

Highly Effective Networking empowers you to:
* Use a small network to reach dozens of insiders and decision makers.
* Get the right message to the right people, even if you have never met them.
* Create a project plan to organize your networking efforts.
* Speak effectively and comfortably with your networking contacts.
* Talk to decision makers before the job opening is announced.

Networking in job hunting is different than other networking. You don't have to hobnob with the rich and famous. There's no need for aggressive sales tactics. You just need to understand how real networking fits into your job search, and then be systematic about doing it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!!
This is an excellent book that is well written. The book gets to the point and goes into great detail as how to network and make it comfortable for everyone.Orville gives you step by step directions on how to network and what to say to various network contacts depending on how well you know the person and who they are. This book will take the mystique out of networking and should be mandatory reading for all job seekers.Buy the book, do what it says and you will be a successful networker!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pierson's sober, intelligent, and effective guide to networking
PROS:

* A sober, straightforward system for networking for a new job.
* Builds on Pierson's past work effectively.
* A refreshing, low-key change to the "supernetworking" books.

CONS:

* Repeats some previous material.
* The system presented is very intense, and may take effort to adapt to a lower-key job search.

SUMMARY: A book on career networking with the network you have, and how to do it in an organized manner.A good purchase if you want to improve your network use or use Pierson's techniques.

Orville Pierson's "The Unwritten Secrets of the Highly Effective Job Search" is one of the books I recommend to every job seeker, professional, and careerists.Though his prose is at times dull, his intelligent, rational, and systematic approach is simply fantastic.Pierson took a lot of common sense job search tips and made a system out of it.

So when I heard he had another book out, focusing on networking in the job search, I had to read it - and of course review it.

If there was a flaw in the last book, it was the dull prose.I'm pleased to report Pierson has changed his style, keeping his sober and non-sensational style, while making it more accessible and less dull.It also makes the book read remarkably fast, as it's well-paced.

Pierson's focus is deliberately not on supernetworking or becoming a master of networking - he leaves that to others. His goal instead is to spell out how people can use the network they have to create a highly effective job search.Even if you don't think you have much of a network, Pierson's book helps you figure out what you can do with your current network, and helps you see how much networking power you really have..

His approach is, as in his last book, a serious, systematic approach - and one that is for a serious job hunter. He discusses examining your target markets and businesses, then focusing on how you can leverage your network to find the jobs you want at the places you want. Each step is designed to get you closer to the right people and the decision that hires you.

As Pierson leads you through his system, he also discusses the philosophies of good job searches and networking. This helps understand the "why" of what you're doing, and it frankly does a good job of helping explain what good job networking involves. These lessons and digressions aren't invasive, and actually help one understand just what good job networking involves.

The book itself can stand alone from Pierson's first work, though it does work better as a compliment to it.The books do share a lot of material, so though both are worth reading, you will get some repetition.

I'm glad to see another good, rational, organized book on job searching and networking.Pierson is a welcome voice of calm, organization, professionalism, and thoughtful action.I'm looking forward to his next book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Networking Book
Creative, practical, and motivating... this is a terrific resource for anyone who is in job search. Orville has taken his vast experience in job search and specifically networking and packed it into a must have networking book. This is the book I buy for friends who are stalled in their job search or for those college graduates moving into a tough job market! This book is like having Orville Pierson as your own personal job coach to teach you one of the most essential life skills -- networking!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but best read in conjunction with the LHH manuals
If you have been through the Lee Hecht Harrison (LHH) training and own their AIM manuals, then this book and Pierson's previous book "Highly Effective Job Search" provide very interesting background material and explanation that can be used to better understand the LHH method. For those who are unfamiliar with the LHH AIM manuals, be aware that Pierson's two books are a parallel to the LHH manuals. In many ways these Pierson books come up lacking when compared to the LHH manuals. But that is more true of Pierson's other book than of this networking book.Having studied both the networking section of the LHH manuals and this networking book by Pierson, I can say that while the general points are the same, Pierson has some idiosyncratic views on networking which are not represented in the LHH manuals, even though Pierson is the Director of Program Design at LHH.And if I had to pick which one is better, I would have to say it is the LHH manuals.Although Pierson runs program design at LHH, a number of his idiosyncratic ideas are probably drowned out by saner heads when LHH composes it manuals. One example of Pierson's idiosyncratic ideas is his artificial separation between personal and professional networks; I find that these two blend into each other, and the LHH manuals do not emphasize this separation. So the best method (in my opinion) is to use both the LHH AIM manuals (available used on Amazon) and Pierson's books. However, you can get by just using Pierson's books, and you will still be using the essential points of what is probably the best job search method available. The key point, above all others, is to spend 75% of your job search time on networking, and only 25% of your time on other things like applying to online ads, working with recruiters, and direct approach. Finally, I would agree with others that Pierson's books are repetitive in places. If only he had cut out a lot of the repetition and instead replaced it with all the helpful forms, process, and techniques that are in the LHH manuals. But perhaps LHH would not let him copy their manuals that much?If so, what a lost opportunity to spread such a valuable job search method to a global audience.Lee Hecht Harrison's AIM (Managing Your Search Project)

4-0 out of 5 stars Reach Out, Make Contact, Land a Job
Orville Pierson is the senior vice president of an international career services company, so he clearly knows about job hunting. He lucidly illustrates how job seekers can maximize the relationships within their circle of contacts to reach all-important "decision makers." He also directs readers to unlikely networking sources they might not normally consider. Pierson explains that, when it comes to job hunting, the Internet is both a blessing and a curse. Although the Web may expose a job hunter to more opportunities, odds are that any given résumé - along with thousands of others - can get swallowed up in a bottomless pit. The prospects are nearly as grim with print or online classified ads - particularly when job competition is fierce. Networking, Pierson says, may offer the best opportunity to find work or career advancement. Many people have landed good jobs by initiating conversations with friends, casual acquaintances or former colleagues. getAbstract praises Pierson's systematic, strategic approach to networking. As he says, it doesn't guarantee results - and it does require time and perseverance - but today's job seekers need every available weapon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent hands-on reference for all levels of need
I have worked as a vocational counselor for many years, and I use this book on a regular basis with my clients as well as with my own family/friends. A nice feature of The Career Portfolio Workbook is that it outlines what you need to do during the process of creating a portfolio, but also recognizes that some people don't have the time to work through the process in a step-by-step fashion. For example, the book has a note in the introduction that if you need a portfiolo in a hurry - say, for an interview tomorrow - you need to read chapters X and Y. With a week to prepare, chapters W, X, Y, and Z should top your reading list. If you have more time, read the whole book.

The directions are wonderful, and allow each person a wide range of flexibility in terms of developing a unique style of presentation. The book includes templates, sample portfolios, and other documents you can modify for your own use.

Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looking back -- not looking forward (or around)
While it has several good points, this book, like the companion book "What Color is Your Parachute", suffers from a lack of understanding of how quickly things change on the Internet. This book (and the companion) still publishes the same tired source-of-hire data that has been around since about 2001. Up to 24% of jobs come from the NEWSPAPER? (That's a statistic from SHRM in 1997, back when Netscape still dominated the Web browser war.) Every reliable source I've read since 2005 indicates that jobs are sourced through newspapers at around 3-5%.

The author has numerous "best-picks" websites or articles that were published in 2002...while interesting, they were out of date. Blogs get a 1 paragraph mention, LinkedIn gets less than 1 page, and Facebook and Twitter aren't even considered (and their respective job-source potentials are all growing). For a book published in 2008, it seems like it was just a rehash of the Parachute book from 2001 with a few new websites added here-and-there to make it seem current.

Save your money. If you want to buy an online job search book, at least find one that is published in 2010 and doesn't rely on 10-year-old statistics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Bolles Fan

When I first became a career counselor in 1978, Richard Bolles What Color is Your Parachute was my first purchase. He continues to be one of my favorite authors regarding career exploration and seeking employment. This book is loaded with practical and valuable information on these subjects. A must read for anyone seeking employment!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Job skills ONLINE
This book provides the means and reasoning and all the skills to look for work and career moves online. It iseasy to read and follow with access to testing and getting to your end goal. Either a job or a change of job and career excellent material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Source Of Information
"Job-Hunting Online" by Mark and Richard Bolles is a good source of information for the job seeker who wishes to use the internet as a source.

The book contains several different job sites, some well-known (Craigslist, etc.) and others not so well-known.Under each listing there is a brief description of what the user can expect to see at the particular web site. There are also other helpful web sites such as the ones that describe salary ranges for different occupations.

A good resource.Recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rip Off !

I paid $24.95 for this book on Amazon. The cover price is $4.95. I thought I was getting a new hard cover book. It was soft cover and definately used. There were highlighted areas in the book. When contacting Amazon, I got a "oh well" attitude. Buyer Beware !

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening and Realistic!!
This book was one of two I purchased to help me gain some perspective in how to represent individuals who had various disabilities but wanted to work if they were able.As a job placement counselor, it is my job to help the clients see what they CAN do and teach them ways to accomodate themselves and communicate their needs effectively to employers. This book helped me understand ways to do this so that clients of mine not only attained employment, but also retained that employment for a long time. This book is a great one and I encourage anyone who is disabled, or knows people who are and need your support, to read this.Keep an open mind and try out the ideas presented.I think you will find it gives some great advice!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book
During my own job hunt, I was constantly frustrated by comments made by family and friends. They had assumed that I could receive special preference just because I have a disability.

I have known that my reality is much different; employers do not have to hire me for a job which my disability prevents me from performing the essential functions, and I am responsible for getting myself to the office.

These critical legal distinctions had made my finding a job very difficult inspite of having a dynamic resume and job recomendations which other people must work their whole lives to obtain. I was placed in the unenviable sittuation of having to turn down job offers while classmates with much lower GPAs and far less reccomendations quickly were being placed.

This book is a great resource and affirmation. Job hunting is hard enough as it is, but being a person with a disabilty adds one more challenge to the mix. This book is beneficial for people with disabilities and their friends of all perspectives, but I feel that prospective college graduates and their families should especially read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Written by Dale Susan Brown and Richard Nelson Bolles(Author of What Color is Your Parachute), it is a simple and concise guide to finding a job if you have a disability. It pulls no punches and tells it the way it is.
It gives simple, concise advice on how to conduct a job search, and what to do in an interview. It tells you how keep a prospective employer from getting nervous about your disability, and how to communicate in an interview in an honest and positive way.
If you are person with a disability this is a terrific book, if you have a co-worker with a disability, it is a terrific book, if you have people working for you with disabilities it is a terrific book, and if you are a "normal" person (whatever that is...} it is a terrific book.
The advice in the book leverages the expertise of both authors and is sound and easy to understand. It also helps you to do a better job, once you have employment. The book is highly recommended for everyone!

It holds your hand through the arduous and terrifying process ofjob-seeking, and offers valuable insights relating torésumés, interviews, and networking, effectively playingthe roles of mother, pal, spouse, and guidance counselor, without everlosing its temper or asking when you're finally going to land ajob.

He's chairman and CEO of Robert Half International Inc.,the world's largest specialized staffing firm, and he's pennednumerous articles, columns, and books (such as The Fast Forward MBA inHiring and StaffingEurope), so Messmer knows a thing or two about how to applyfor a job effectively, and he has a few words to say on how not toblow it, too.

He knows, for instance, how overwhelming and intimidating the job huntcan be, and how useful it is to break the monster down intoprioritized, bite-sized tasks. There are detailed chapters onorganizing, setting targets, and scoping out the field, plus essentialchapters on writing a résumé and cover letter thatpresent you in the best light, pursuing job leads, and performing wellin the interview spotlight.

Messmer's experience in the field makes his advice reliable. You knowthat when he suggests how to research a company before the interviewso you are somewhat knowledgeable about what they do, and when hewarns against pink résumés and sarcastic cover letters,he's offering the collective opinion of hundreds of staffingprofessionals. It's advice worth reading, no matter how qualified youalready are to do the job once you get it. The only misleading aspectof Job Hunting for Dummies is the title, because no dummy woulddo something so smart as to increase his or her application advantageby reading Max Messmer's book. --Stephanie Gold ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Job Hunting for Dummies
Did not realize when I ordered that this was the tiny version. Not the big book version. No information on this in listing.....abbreviated version; not what I had expected or hoped for when
I ordered it.....

1-0 out of 5 stars Used Book received in poor condition
I have ordered a few used books through Amazon.com and have had good luck with the purchase. This book I decided to try and when I received the book it was in really bad shape. It was not worth the price of a used book. I did not expect the book to be in perfect condition as it was being purchased used but I did not expect for the book to be filthy dirty and torn. It looked like it had been dropped several times on the floor and ran over by a fork truck or pallet truck. It will really makes me think twice before I purchase another used book. It might be worth paying the full price just so I can have a book that is readable. Everyone needs to think about "Is the discounted price worth the trouble". I would rate this purchase as very poor!

1-0 out of 5 stars Mini-book - a ripoff
I ordered Job Hunting for Dummies and I guess Amazon found one.It turned out that this wasn't Job Hunting for Dummies but a mini-book with a few excerpts for the full book.Since the picture on Amazon looked like a book and Amazon didn't flag that this was a mini-book, I didn't know that I bought the wrong thing until it arrived in the mail.As a result, I had to go to the bookstore and bought the real thing.Buyer beware!

5-0 out of 5 stars A reliable starting point
A job market author, I give this book five stars for its breadth. As it promises, it covers all its bases, helping the reader to organize the job search, prepare for an interview, hone a resume, and achieve myriad other successes in the process of finding that dream position.Job Hunting for Dummies could offer more in the way of up-to-date technological information--more on online job sites, posting your resume on the Internet, the proper protocol for emailing a potential employer, etc.--but perhaps more detailed tips will be provided in a later edition.Overall, Messmer achieves what he sets out to do: he gives the reader a solid starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, worth every penny
After several years of complete dedication to my career and to the company I was employed by, I experienced a layoff a few months back. Thus, I suddenly find myself back in the job market and felt ill-prepared to deal with it until I got this book.

I went on a few interviews but had been nervous about certain questions such as; do I tell them how much I was making at my last job? Do I write a "thank you for interviewing" me letter after the interview? etc, etc...

This book covers all the topics that you are nervous about. Examples; what to say in a cover letter, interviewing, salary negotiations + much more.Included are some useful sample resumés and cover letters in different formats.

After reading this book, I feel much more confident that I'm handling my job hunting in a more professional manner. I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a job, or even if you have a job but hate your boss and want another one.

In general, I like the For Dummies clear and concise and easy to read format. While there are some For Dummies books that have very little substance, this is not one of them. ... Read more

Product Description
One hundred pages of lifesaving advice for people out of work. When over ten million people have needed help with their job-hunt—or with figuring out what to do with their life—there is one person they have turned to, more than any other. He is Richard N. Bolles, author of the #1 job-hunting book of all time, What Color Is Your Parachute? His name is well-known around the world. Just during the last twelve months, he has appeared in Time (“10 Ideas Changing the World Right Now,” March 2009), U.S. News & World Report (deemed “savior of the nation’s unemployed,” October 2008), NBC’s Today Show (broadcast in April 2009), and many other publications and shows. His book was the #1 best-seller on BusinessWeek’s paperback list as recently as last November.

Never has his advice been more sought than during these brutal economic times. He has responded by writing a completely new book: The Job-Hunter’s Survival Guide, designed particularly for people who are hanging on the ropes, who haven’t time to do a lot of reading but need help desperately—and now. Early reviews have called this little Guide “brilliant” and “tremendously helpful.” ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read for the unemployed
It's short, concise, and to the point. Bolles provides hope (Ch. 2 - "How to Find Hope in the Midst of a Brutal Downturn") and inspiration to tired, poor, huddled masses of the unemployed yearning to draw a salary yet again. He also shows that there are always jobs out there, whether they are in the open market or the "hidden" market.

The most useful section of his book is probably CH. 4 - "The Best and Worst Ways to Look for a Job". In it, he discusses the 18 ways one can go about finding a job. Be sure to look at page 51, which contains an illustration of the ways a typical employer fills a vacancy and the ways a typical job hunter looks for a vacancy (they are exact opposites of each other).

"The Job-Hunter's Survival Guide" was certainly eye opening for myself, a recent college graduate. I would not classify it as the only job search book to read, but any unemployed person should read this book in tandem with other books that focus on interviews and the like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shortened version What Color is Your Parachute
I bought this book for my son who was recently laid off from his job. It is shorter than "What Color is Your Parachute" but has the same basic information. I think it is very helpful in this tough job market to get this kind of practical advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST buy for Job Hunters in 2010!
Short, sweet and to the point.Filled with MANY great ideas and tips for job-hunting in this (or any) economy.Personally, I didn't think there would be a lot of new things to learn, but I was WAY off.It gives real direction on how to look for a job besides the usual sending your resume via internet. If your unemployed, you must read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Needs to Read Richard Nelson Bolles!
This is THE job hunters manual. In a world that has lost its common sense, this book is jammed packed with really GOOD advice - NOT HYPE, but REALITY!!! I recommend ALL of the "What Color is Your Parachute" books and feel that Richard Nelson Bolles has a gift. No person, job hunter or otherwise, should go without reading this book. It is even an interesting read when you are not job hunting. Take heart, you are not alone. Read the book and hopefully you will feel abled to take the advice. Richard Nelson Bolles presents some very, very, very strong arguments for his job hunting success tips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational book on finding a job!
This book really hits home for the unemployed of today.Seriously.... if you are dedicated enough you'll find something a good something if you put your mind to it.

This book is a great read and gets the reader motivated to get back in the spirit of finding a job.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was very helpful for me.
For the past couple of years it certainly has been a tough market.I work in the Information Technology industry and,as high of a demand is for these positions, there is still many folks out of work in the Metro Detroit (MI) area.

I thought I would respond with some positive news.I spent a considerable amount of time, last year, reading and 'practising' this book "Get the Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring".I was working on short-term employment contracts last year and earlier this year.I landed a great full-time position in June of this year.I fervently believe in the networking concept and joined a networking group here in the Detroit area called: [...] Without a doubt, the networking I did through this group enabled me to land the great position I did.As you mention in this book, I still go to networking events - even after landing a job.

Thanks so much for the great career advice. This book is AWESOME!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique, innovative, inspiring, helpful. Great book. Buy it. Use it now!
I first became acquainted with Ford R. Myers and his book, Get the Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring (GtJYW), last month (April 2010) through reading a San Francisco Examiner online article by Heather Huhman titled "Recommended reading: Get the Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring" ([...]), dated June 22, 2009. Get the Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring is a powerful, relevant experience, moreso, than just a job-search book and career-management tool. Ford's writing style emotes compassion and caring for his audience, and more importantly, collaboration with us-- not only during this economic `perfect storm,' as Ford called it, in which we find ourselves and also throughout our entire working lives. Paraphrasing GtJYW, through researching, defining, then planning our direction/destination, and initiating constructive, congruent, and coordinated ACTION in our job search and/or career management in a proactive, thoughtful, well-planned and well-prepared, sustained effort, we will mitigate, and possibly even eliminate, the negative impact on ourselves of future job search/career challenges.

Ms. Huhman's article is a great read, and the clarity of Ford's job search and career management vision excited me to the prospect of finally finding a job search expert and book that will speak to me in a clear language with actionable, believable, and DO-able steps to move my job search efforts forward productively. I've read much job search/career management material in book form, all manner of online offerings, and various magazines. Finding useful, relevant, coherent information, in this genre has been such a rare discovery, as to almost be non-existent.

I've found Ford, through (1) his book, (2) his website, Career Potential ([...]), and (3) his webinar presentation, to be intelligent, engaging, thoughtful, and informative. His vision and book are both relevant and timely. In reading GtJYW, I needed to clarify a point regarding the use of the online, downloadable Values form and the book (first edition). I e-mailed Ford, expecting for his staff to respond. Ford, himself, responded quickly, and we bantered back-and-forth by e-mail. To be sure I was clear, Ford asked me to call him. I called and left a message for him, again, expecting his staff to return my call. Ford, again, responded himself. He clarified the issue and we talked a bit regarding career searches, his material and my situation. Every positive trait I attributed to Ford prior to conversing with him, he possesses. Ford is an engaging, thoughtful, and intelligent gentleman. GtJYW is an outstanding, relevant, highly useful book.

Book Review:
The book is broken down into 5 parts and 83 talking points, with additional resources, and an accompanying section on Ford's web site, Career Potential ([...] ), including downloadable forms. Several exercises are provided to keep us engaged and to assist us in finding our personal selling points and focus. Additionally, Ford makes excellent of use of "How to" information in numerous vital activities and tools in your job search.

PART I *The Psychology of Job Hunting in a Down Market* reviews the current state of the economy in which we find ourselves today, and sets the stage for Ford's vision of effective job searching for today and the future. Several GEMS to ponder are given: (1) Mind-set before skill set is the number-one secret to job search success; (2) Managing our career is paramount to out happiness and success (We own our career, the companies own the jobs), and (3) Focus and clarity are more important than ever, to move with congruency toward your ultimate goals.

PART II *From Desperation to Career Strategies for Tough Times* gets us thinking about the downside of acting out of desperation, instead acting in concert with our focused, well-planned goals. Exercises included regarding Values, Dreams, free thinking, Strategies, research information, Wish List; All of these points build up to the fact that, "You Must Be Crystal Clear on Your Job Before It Can Become a Reality."

PART III *Leveraging Your Core Job Seeker Materials* Here you will discover the Job Search Survival Toolkit, from which you will work daily to organize and manage upcoming events and record past events for easy recall and follow-up. CRITICAL: Your Résumé Is Your Least Important Tool.

"There are many other critical tools to be developed for one's "Job Seeker's Tool Kit," so that the candidate can use the right tool, for the right purpose, with the right person, at the right time. Since a very small percentage of the job seeker's time will actually be spent in interviews or applying for open positions, the résumé should be seen as the "least important tool. ~Ford. R. Myers (from Huham article)".

Other Gems: (1) Job Search Survival Toolkit is adaptable, is a complete portfolio of career tools, and its goal is to support your goal of using "the right tool at the right time for the right purpose with the right person"; (2) Accomplishment Stories Are Your Most Powerful Selling Tools; (3) Professional Biography; (4) Target Company List; (5) Networking (how to build a list, contact people, track and follow-up; (6) References

Networking is the linchpin of our job search. EIGHTY to EIGHTY-FIVE percent of all jobs are filled before they are advertised through networking! Less competition in the `hidden' job market and more jobs.

PART IV *Job Search Tactics to Use When No One's Hiring* Networking as a topic is covered in only 20 pages, regardless of what some of the negative reviewers say, and the first talking point says it all, "Networking is not Part of Your Job Search--Networking Is Your Job Search" Regardless of how few people you believe you know, the people you know people and they know people, and so on, and so on. Sure some peoples networking will start out being more challenging, but we're not in competition with each other, we're competing against the status quo. Additionally, we keep networking, even when we think things are secure, because you never know.... Yes, networking scripts included and downloadable tracking sheets are available.

Other Gems: (1) Sample Proposal for Service; (2) Online Career Identity; (3) The Résumé `Code' for creating outstanding résumés (samples of different types of résumés given); (4) Strong action verbs; (5) Résumé addendum; (6) Every company is hiring all the time, even in a down economy; (7) Writing a strong cover letter (examples of different types given); (8) Interviewing; (9) Testimonials; (10) Negotiations

PART V *Bulletproof Your Career, Once and for All* Gems: (1) Perpetual Career Management "Beware of a common trap: putting all your time and energy into just doing your job, as compared to managing your career"; (2)Landing your job is not the end--it's the beginning; (3) Never feel helpless again--no matter how bad the job market gets.

*Career Resources*
Gems: (1) Productivity Charts; (2) Other miscellaneous job search information.

One area that I would have enjoyed more discussion, direction, and exercises is in the area of whittling down, then sharpening my focus area and Target Market List. References to other books/material and/or relevant online information, as was done with the job boards would prove very helpful. Regardless, that's only a suggestion, not a criticism. I'll be buying the newest edition this week.

In summation, this is the best job search and career management book I've ever come across. This book is a great "How to" treasure trove of job search and career management information and exercises. Ford R. Myers provides plenty of new, innovative, helpful information to propel us forward in our job searching and professional lives. The GtJYW is outstanding and Ford's writing style speaks very clearly, concisely, inspiringly to me. Get the book! You'll love it! I look forward to my own positive, demonstrable steps in securing more interviews and new work in line with my ultimate goals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for these new career transition times
In a world cluttered with "Career Transition How-To Books," most leave the reader with the usual platitudes and standard fare of "do this and don't do that." But Ford Myers' book "Get the Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring" gives the reader direction, hope, and time tested methods to get to real decision makers and be heard. The author has put together workable, real world tips and techniques that I am personally using to great benefit. I found his "Job Search Survival Tool Kit'' to be an excellent resource for staying on target. I have been through transition twice, and this time the rules have all changed. I strongly recommend Mr. Myers' book to anyone who is struggling to find their next position in these challenging economic times!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Get The Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring"
I was searching for a book for my nieces, one who just graduated college and one who is looking for a new position. I gifted "Get The Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring" by Ford R. Myers to them both. They both praised the book in guiding and focusing them with their cover letters, resumes, search approaches and follow-up. I have since given "Get The Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring" to other friends and family members, and have received only "thank you" on top of "thank you!" I highly recommend this book to both the novice and experienced professional seeking a job. Mr. Myers clearly has the "know how" and the experience to bring such a comprehensive, insightful and practical resource to fruition. This book has become an essential tool helping my friends and family who are in need of employment due to the economic downturn, or who want to change careers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for an emotional pick me up, not so great for anything else.
If you are one of the millions in this country who have been laid off, fired, or flat out screwed over since this recession began, and need an emotional pick me up this book is for you.If on the other hand you have the cover letter, resume, and thank you letter figured out in addition to knowing that Networking in our current economy is what you need to do this book is not for you.

There are a few tips, and pointers that I took, and built on however, 98% of this book is filled with information that you probably already know, and have been practicing in your job search daily since being laid off, fired, etc...

It's a great book for beginners but, if you are experienced in the career field, then do not waste your time.

No matter the economic environment, there are ample reasons why you might be aching to change jobs or move up in the one you already have. In What to Do With the Rest of Your Life, career consultant Robin Ryan--who's offered her advice over the past 20 years to individual clients and through top broadcast and print outlets--shares the specifics that can help you do it right. Virtually all of Ryan's suggestions will prove useful to one reader or another, as she explains in detail how to tap into the hidden job market--since some 85 percent of all positions are never directly advertised--via research "on the Internet, in the library, over telephones, and through conversations with colleagues, friends, and acquaintances." 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book and motivating too!
This book gives the reader tips on what makes them tick and then turning that philosophy around to ensure they pick a good career match which will make them happy.

The reader no doubt has to make some pretty tough choices, especially if they are out of work but if you stick to the tips in this book and really put words to paper you'll find a job that you'll love!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me improve my life with a nice new job
My kids are in the upper grades now so I faced a daunting task of return to a career I'd left 13 years ago. A friend loved her book, and recommended it highly. I found it inspired me to see that I indeed could make this change and prosper. I found this to be a practical guide -- useful, motivational, with terrific ideas on how to return to work, flourish, and make a good salary too. A valuable guidebook.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very "What color is your parachute-ish"
Lots of the Robin's advice comes straight out ofthe job hunting bible of the past 2 decades "What color is your parachute" by Richard Bolles but still --- It's an excellent primer for the real thing, and summarizes a lot of what Richard Bolles preaches and teaches.

Because it is a quick an easy read, I suggest buying it cheap (or take it out of the library (sorry Amazon)),use it to whet your appetite for Bolles books, then begin collecting every edition you can get your hands on of"What color is your parachute" (every edition has something new in it). And try to get a hold of the audio book (I think he only put one out in 1995 - I wish he'd put one out every year!). It'll change your life and maybe mine too, cause maybe, just maybe, If everyone were to read Bolles books and truly understand the concepts I wouldn't have to deal with so many unhappy, bitter people at the work place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn From Someone Who Knows!
I highly recommend this insightful book to anyone who wants to improve their current job situation or consider a change altogether. It offers numerous options, ways to determine the best approach, and will continue to be a valuable resource for many years!Robin Ryans' realistic advice reflects her extensive and sought-after knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a look
I gave the book three stars rather than four or five because it doesn't deliver what the title promises and the cover is all hype -- but the book does deliver some very worthwhile guidance.

What to Do (WTD) will be best suited to the midlife career changer with valuable skills -- self-motivated folks who just need direction. I like the book's down-to-earth no-nonsense tone.

Good parts:
List of career-killers -- not new to anyone who's been out in the world, but well-stated and worth reviewing
Discussion of interviewing for information and network: very realistic
Discussion of internet job search is right on!
Discussion of starting a business is better than average (but I like my own "are you ready" checklist better!)
Salary negotiations section is excellent

Weak parts:
Self-assessment (lists of values and skills were very ordinary and won't be helpful to most)
Recommendation to take tests: rarely useful for mid-career managers or professionals
Relocation section: My book on this topic, Making the Big Move, is two hundred pages long -- two pages can't do justice to the topic and may be misleading.

I wish the author had focused more on interview and resume strategies; interestingly, she does not include a discussion of resumes at all.I suspect that her strength lies in the nuts-and-bolts of job search and I wish she had included more on those topics.

I had to smile when I read her section on how to find a career counselor. Everyone who writes a book includes alist of "must have" qualifications for an advisor and, amazingly, those qualifications are all held by the author!
With a degree in counseling, this author urges us to find a vocational counselor. However, vocational counseling experience helps younger job seekers. Midlife, mid-career professionals need different sources of help.Recent books that target this market tend to be written by experienced professionals who have advanced degrees and life experience.

There are valuable nuggets hereand I wish the author would write a meaty book, based on what she knows well, rather than an overview that is too sketchy in some places to be a useful guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful tool in the modern job-hunter's toolbox
Fearless Job Hunting: Powerful Psychological Strategies for Getting the Job You Want tells how to overcome self-doubt and worry and how to use psychology to understand real job requirements, interviewer intentions, and how to land the job. From staying positive during the process to using cognitive behavioral therapies to understand strategies decision processes in organizations, this is yet another powerful tool in the modern job-hunter's toolbox - and a pick for any career-oriented collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Job Hunting and Practically Applied Psychology
As the backgrounds of the authors suggest, this book purports to offer "powerful psychological strategies for getting the job you want." Topics covered in the book are quite comprehensive, from preparation and targeting through job search, resumes (probably the weakest part of the book), networking, job search, interviewing and salary negotiation.

Based on the the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy of Albert Ellis, the authors provide some excellent constructs to work through the decison-making process in a manner to reduce procrastination and enhance progression towards meaningful work. Using the ABCDE approach (Adverse situation, Belief about it, emotional and behavioral Consequences of these beliefs, Disputing this belief and identifying the Effects of the new perspective) to evaluate perspectives, situations, decisions and action, they provide multiple real life examples of job hunters and career explorers working through this process. Chapters end withhints, short worksheets and questions to apply the key topics to the reader's specific situation.

I found the first section titled "Gear Up to ManageYour Job-Loss and Job-Search Challenges" to be particularly useful, providing excellent guidance on reprogramming personal perspectives, managing the inevitable stress of the process and creating a positive, results-oriented job search environment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read!
I, too, read this book in one sitting.

I really got a lot out of this book, so much useful advice! Yes, some of it was "common sense", but sometimes we need to be reminded of it. Overall, this is a must read for all law students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Detailed, Insider Advice to Get the Job
Law job interviews ARE different from any other type of employment interview.I have been in the non-law work world for some time and have done plenty of successful interviews.Still, this book helped me tailor my style to match legal job interviewers expectations. The book has excellent and specific advice that your career services office may be too shy to tell you.The advice is practical; based on feedback from lawyers who regularly interview prospects from top law schools nationwide.

As a law student, I found two chapters most helpful: 1) How to Research your Interviewer. One of the hardest questions to nail in a law job interview is, "What do you want to know about our firm?"To answer well, you have to have done your homework. The book gives you great advice on how to research the firm so you can ask intelligent questions and get meaningful answers.2)On-campus Interviews.Understanding the OCI process--and what the interviewers have to endure--is critical to creating your interviewing strategy. The book gives give a look a the OCI process from the interviewers perspective, and gives you tactics you can use to make an impression on a tired, possibly disinterested interviewer.

It is a quick read and well organized so you can easily find the specific info relevant to your situation.I highly recommend it to anyone with a law job interview in their future--regardless of experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
This is an incredible book and a must-read for all law students going through interviews.I used it for my clerkship interviews. The authors have a wide variety of experiences and know exactly what they are talking about. To succeed in your interviews, you must have this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book sooner- it would have saved my interview!!!!
I read this book in one sitting. It was very enjoyable and had great important advice for any law student or lawyer. The advice in this book made sense and is invaluable!Unfortunately for me, I read this book after my interview and I know had I read this book first, I would have been more prepared to handle the pressure and I would have taken steps to prevent any foolish mishaps from occurring at the interview. This book is great and I will recommend it to any lawyers I know who are facing a job interview or even looking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide to interviewing in the legal field!
The book is a well-researched, detailed, and engaging interviewing resource for J.D. and LL.M. candidates, attorneys, as well as foreign lawyers planning to practice in the U.S. The authors address the intricacies and pitfalls of not only firm interviews, but also in-house, clerkship, government, and lateral interviews. As a result, the book is an invaluable comprehensive interviewing guide for law students and attorneys pursuing various career paths within the legal profession. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Job Search
An useful book to help focus a job search for professionals.Even if you disagree with the authors main points, th queetions asked are appopriate for any job seeker to ask.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Missed Opportunity
This is a mediocre book written about the best job search method there is.There is an interesting interplay between this book and the Lee Hecht Harrison (LHH) instruction manuals called "AIM".In many ways this book is a redaction of those manuals. But the manuals contain many examples, forms and step-by-step processes that are completely missing from this book.I would have had a much tougher time with job search if I had only had this book and not the AIM manuals. The AIM manuals are not for sale new, and therefore those who are not lucky enough to have had their company pay for LHH training are left with only this book (and its companion Networking book, also by Pierson). The AIM manuals can be purchased used on Amazon.I would recommend purchasing them for anyone seriously trying to follow this method.I am left wondering why Pierson wrote a book with all the text explanation of the method, but none of the workbook-style tools that are needed to really understand and use the method in an effective manner. Was he limited by how much of their method LHH would let him put into a general availability book?If that is the case, then how sad.It is like being given a sip of fine wine, but not being allowed to drink the full glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book which leads you in the right direction
Mr. Pierson has written a well insightful book which gives the reader a sneak peak into what's going on in the manager's office and helps the reader understand the key steps in getting their foot in the door.A well written book which will assist anyone looking for the magic potion to getting oneself noticed.

This book also gives some key steps which are important in any job search to assist the user in finding that perfect job!

Kelly Wibbenmeyer, Author of Any Tom, Dick, or Harry Can Get a Job: A Sure Fire Way to Land a Job

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you think you know explained the right way
PROS: A sober, thoughtful, organized book that presents a definite plan for a job search, organizing many common elements of a good job search into one process.

CONS: Extremely dry writing style may put some off.Despite organization, some of the book's organization is odd.

SUMMARY: A must-buy book for the job search, presenting an organized plan you can use "out of the box" as long as you're willing to do some research.

There are a lot of books out there on doing a job search, and it seems most of them repeat about 80% of the same material, with different levels of enthusiasm and different audiences in mind.We all know about networking, resumes, cover letters, etc.It seems there's nothing new under the sun job-search wise, and even the technical innovations we see, such as social media, only seem to build on common behaviors - networking and sending out resumes.

Orville Pierson's book contains all the advice you've ever heard before - there's no magic in a good job search, but a lot of research, networking, and common sense. What Pierson does that makes the book stand out is give you an organized plan for using good job search techniques. This isn't a pile of advice - it's a plan to get you a job and improve your job searching.

The core of Pierson's work is fourfold:
    1) Research one does on oneself, one's potential positions, and one's market.
    2) Using that research to create a good resume and "sales tools."
    3) Networking with an eye toward the long term, while using resources you have now.
    4) Treating this as a project with measurable numbers, information, etc.

These four elements work together, feeding into each other and providing feedback.A list of companies you want to work for (a vital part of the Pierson method) feeds into your sales pitch, your networking tells you about the companies further, your plans modify, and you track your results. In the end you navigate closer and closer to your ideal job, probably faster than you may realize.

Besides the plan, the book does provide a lot of useful advice, and fortunately these tidbits are usually couched in the larger picture. How many hours to put in on a job search ideally, what kinds of job hunting work, for whom and why, etc. You'll pick up a lot reading this even if you're an experienced professional, and there's an entire subsection on forming a support group that's good for all professionals.

The book is not without it's flaws. It's extremely dry writing, reminiscent more of a textbook or a manual, and the few attempts to add some humor don't really work.Despite its organization, there are a few curious asides or re-visiting of past ideas that seem a bit distracting. These are minor flaws, but it's important to realize them tackling the book, especially if you're used to some of the rah-rah go-go job advice books. This is an encouraging book, but it's mostly about getting to work on your job search.

This book is ideal for everyone in the job market except maybe high-level executives. It's smart, intelligent, well-written (if dry), and presents a useful, rational plan that anyone can use in their job search, and that builds good job search habits. It's not the LAST job search book you'll read (especially if you're in a specialized market), but it should be on the shelf of anyone with a job.

In short, I'm giving it my rare "must buy, must read" rating - when you're done with this review, go buy the book.

Also if you're using this book, don't lend it out untill you've got that job you want.- you'll want to refer back to it in the future. If you want, buy extra copies for your friends and family - it's worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to withstand the rejection and not waist time finding your next job!
I have done lots of career coaching in my life but when I heard Orville speak and outline the process he has used to help hundreds find a job, I was inspired and impressed. What he does is make the job hunting process, that no one likes to go through, manageable and systematic. The hardest part is being rejected he says, so he explains how to withstand that! He has fine tuned the job hunt so that if you aren't getting an interview, you need to do "x" and if you aren't getting past the interview stage you need to "y". What I was particularly impressed by is the method used to determine what position you will try to obtain. Using career codes (at the library) and zip codes, you can actually measure your chances of finding a particular career in said location. This allows you to broaden your search or refine it as needed based on that type of job's turn over rate. Now this process is available to us normal folks not just corp people who do not use the want ads to find work. I also have his Networking book which I HIGHLY recommend for job searches or any kind of sales work. It too is excellent. Orville also has a sense of humor so neither book is dry, how refreshing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Career Coward's Guide to Job Searching
Katie's book offers sensible, doable strategies for finding just the right job.The format is fun and definitely not boring like so many how to books.Finding a job is selling yourself to a potential employer once we determine that we would really like to work there.I highly recommend this book to anyone facing the dreaded job search.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging and insightful
Security, the one thing hat will keep someone in a job that they despise with all of their being. "The Career Coward's Guide to Job Searching: Sensible Strategies for Overcoming Job Search Fears" is a guide designed for those in such a situation who want to move on with their careers without the insane risk usually associated with such methods. Encouraging and insightful, it's an ideal manual for the timid to get the courage they need, making "The Career Coward's Guide to Job Searching" an essential addition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
Easy to read format allows you to develop your own plan and implement it to help manage your career. Katy gives some very effective advise for making the most of your time and effort. I highly recommend it along with the rest of the Career Coward's series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Job Search Gem
Piotrowski has a knack for making the daunting seem do-able and she also gives readers solid advice. As an HR professional, I often find the advice that career gurus offer can run counter to what works in the real world. Fear not, job seekers will not drive the HR pro nuts by taking the advice offered in this book.Piotrowski is up to date with current market trends and her emphasis on networking and tapping into positions that are not even posted is invaluable to job searchers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful step-by-step help in improving your career opportunities
In the current economic environment, I think everyone is somewhat of a "Career Coward."

I have worked with Katy Piotrowski one-on-one for a decade, and her coaching has led me to grow my professional skills far more than I could have on my own.I now run my own business, and it has grown and become quite successful. These books cover the information and career strategies that I have followed, and found to be quite useful.

There are few "quick, get rich" solutions to managing your career. Not many people get lucky and have the perfect job just turn up.Most of us, like me, have to slog through figuring out what they want to do, and how to go about it, and how to keep the enthusiasm going when you get stuck and things aren't moving forward. These books are for the person who wants to make the stressful "slogging" part more fun and productive.(And for those optimistic people who like to jump off the career high dive, they probably wouldn't buy a book with "Career Coward" in the title, anyway!)

For me, changing careers and building my business wasn't easy and didn't happen overnight, but has been a rewarding challenge.I am a step-by-step person, and while that may be "cowardly" at times, I think it is also practical for most people to do career changes in manageable steps and not to take huge career risks that could backfire.

Katy Piotrowski's ways of encouraging me to look realistically for manageable steps to take along the way, and to seek and find real opportunities, have been invaluable to me!I recommend this book, and all the books in the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info even if you think you know about job hunting.
I ended up getting a job before reading much of it.A local unemployment office displays posters by this publisher/author that have career & job hunting tips with the thinking behind the tips included. It was real smart stuff that I hadn't thought about or applied to my own efforts.Seeing those posters was enough to make me want to have the book.

This book gives step-by-step advice for the entire process, from figuring out what you might like to do for a job to what to do after the interview is over. The detailed advice on finding jobs to apply for, writing a cover letter, calling a prospective employer, and preparing for the interview is fabulous. It has a lot of great advice along with several exercises to get you going on each step of your job search.

Do you have a hard time knowing what to say in difficult situations?Do you have a hard time figuring out how to sell your strengths to a future employer?Do you have a hard time figuring out how to reply to those difficult interview questions? This book covers all of these areas...it tells you exactly what you need to include in a cover letter, what sort of answers you need to be prepared for when you call a future employer, and how to safely answer those painful interview questions. This book includes a page of the 50 most common interview questions and suggestions for safe answers...by itself, these 2 pages are worth the price of the book.
