Product Description
More than 1.4 million people left California's welfare rolls between August 1996 and September 2001. Although this dramatic decline in the caseload in the early years following welfare reform was seen by some as heralding the triumph of the new rules, others saw it as an alarm bell regarding the well-being of former welfare recipients. This report presents the findings of telephone surveys conducted in the late 1990s among one-parent and two parent families approximately 6 months and 12 months after they left welfare. The report presents snapshots of how well these families are doing during each of these periods, describing the families' economic security, use of public assistance, and difficulties encountered in maintaining employment and coping with adverse conditions. In addition to comparing circumstances over time, the report also identifies factors that might predict a return to welfare and other poor outcomes for families. ... Read more

Seto provide important new estimates of the private costs and public effects of childhood disabilities among welfare recipients.Based on over 2,000 interviews with household heads in Los Angeles, Alameda, San Joaquin, and San Bernardino Counties, their estimates cover direct expenditures by families and indirect costs due to employment reductions. They also examine participation rates in public assistance programs and estimate the likelihood that families with disabled children will exit these programs to independence. They conclude that public assistance may be an essential part of an income-packaging strategy for many of these families. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Authors
I know the authors of this book personally and have spent numerous hours with Clara Lowry. Her work with abusive parents is amazing. Their work was cutting edge and they pioneered through areas that others thought were not workable.

Theser are some of the most respectable hard working people in the business, Clara was doing therapy well into her 80's. She is awesome to work with and cares deeply for her clients. Just the insight into their thought process and the work they did is worth the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cedar House
This book is a description of a program established in 1974 at Long Beach California by the founders. It is a reflection of their pioneer work at a time, when there was very little experience with the treatment of abusing families. The authors started out as unlicensed social workers, but in this historic account you feel that they learned a lot from each other, their co-workers and their clients. This experience can be of benifit to others working with child abuse and neglect.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Collectors
I purchased this book for my son who is a Simpson's fan and collector. It was not quite what we expected but in all is a very different piece for collectors.
My son can pretty much recite every episode by heart and there were still information in this book that he was unfamiliar with.
Over all it is worth the price for a collector to have something with a twist to add to the collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but a little cheesy
As an avid Simpsons fan, I wanted a photo album of the Simpsons family. I thought it would be spiral bound, but it was not. It has many pictures from Homer and Marge's baby years, which have not been shown in the series as far as I know. There are some pictures of Homer and Marge's senior prom. However, at some points, I find it "cheesy" and not as funny as the series. So, if you are looking for the Simpsons humor, don't buy this. If you want pictures of the Simpsons family and a collector's item, buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
It was just as I expected - it's full of small facts about our loved Simpsons family. There are a lot of staff you cant hear about in TV series.

The one of greatest part is covers - Bouvier and Simpsons family tree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Patient Heal Thyself
This is a great book and I learned alot of helpful information by reading it.
I don't understand all the hype about Ruben being out to make alot of money. So what if he has his own line of health care products. I think it is great that his goal is to help others with the knowledge he has gained from his own illnesses.
It must have more to do with the fact that he is a professing christian that is such a turn off for some people. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Kick-start your metabolism into high gear with Bob Greene's revolutionary new exercise and health program!Amazon.com Review
Fitness is a lifetime commitment, but you can accelerate results and transform your body in 12 weeks, says Bob Greene, best known as Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer. Not for the "move a little" crowd, this program is intense and challenging, whatever your starting level. "It's a bit like boot camp," Greene acknowledges. You'll do vigorous aerobic exercise 15 (beginning level), 30 (intermediates), or 45 (advanced) minutes 6 days a week, and increase 2 minutes each week--and double your usual minutes for one workout a week. You'll also strength train with dumbbells or machines and do functional training (strengthening stabilizing muscles).

The eating plan is not a diet--rather Greene describes 5 eating rules to help you eat fewer and burn more calories: curb emotional eating, eat breakfast, establish an eating cut-off time, drink lots of water, and limit alcohol. You'll get enough calories to sustain your intense exercise routine, but cut out the calories otherwise stored as fat.

Greene, author of Get With the Program and Make the Connection, also analyzes popular diets, and fills the book with motivational stories of his successful clients. Recommended for those who are ready to commit to an intense program to burn fat, increase metabolism, and change habits for the long haul. --Joan Price

Special Interview with Bob Greene
Not for the "move a little" crowd, Bob Greene's Total Body Makeover promises "Maximum Results in Minimum Time" to readers who are ready to commit to an intense exercise regimen during this twelve-week program. Sounds simple enough--but it wouldn't do the book justice to oversimplify its premise. Greene's genuine attachment to address the root causes for poor eating and activity habits, and to guide the reader through building the strong emotional foundation necessary to undergo physical changes, make Total Body Makeover a standout companion to transforming your body, inside and out. Amazon.com editor Nathalie Farage recently caught up with Greene. Read on.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to get started-not end all be all.
I picked up this book off the shelf that I have just had sitting around.I don't remember buying it-but I have it.I picked it up a few weeks ago as I needed a kick in the butt to start working out again. It did-I am once again exercising regularly and I have Bob Greene to thank for it. This book inspired me and convinced me that strength training is important.

My problem with the book is the rigid exercise routine. The cardio was good. You start at 15 minutes and add 2 minutes every week. However you end up doing the same strength workout every week.It is OK-however I thought you need to mix it up to work muscles in different ways. Also, as a former and now getting back into runner, I have specific exercises that I need to do to avoid injury.I modified the program for myself doing what I need to do to focus on my core muscles-but that is because I know to do this.I also think that if you do the same ab routine every day that your muscles just get used to it and you eventually plateau. So again, I throw in other ab exercises.

My biggest gripe is what Greene says about yoga and pilates. He claims that you cannot substitute these with cardio, strength, or functional exercises. I'd like to see him say that after trying a Vinyasa or ashtanga class. These are very vigorous forms of yoga that would get anyone's heart rate up.And regarding strength, my triceps and hamstrings are still sore after a class I took 2 days ago.I wasn't getting sore anymore with the 8 exercises. As far as pilates-it's a great core workout-and after 6 weeks of the same ab routine it was hard to avoid the temptation of a pilates class. So I worked it in.

So bottom line-it is a very motivating book that can help get you in the habit of exercise. Also-thanks Bob, for convincing me to strength train. Are exercise the end all be all? I don't think so. Use it as a base-modify it to make it work for you.And finally-Vinyasa yoga is a cardio workout and while I don't think you should substitute it more than once a week-you can probably skip a strength training session sometimes and do a Vinyasa class. It mixes things up a bit I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Greene's total body makeover
I have had this book in the past, so I knew what to expect. The book is excellent for anyone wanting to live a healthier life style. The book was delivered in excellent condition and delivered promptly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life forever!
I read this book and it was a wake up call for me. I have slowly lost weight ever since and there's no going back for me now. It's not am I going to work out today, it's when am I going to work out today? I don't make anynore excuses and I have 3 kids. Age's 13, 9 and 3!

Product Description
Backlash against Welfare Mothers is a forceful examination of how and why a state-level revolt against welfare, begun in the late 1940s, was transformed into a national-level assault that destroyed a critical part of the nation's safety net, with tragic consequences for American society. With a wealth of original research, Ellen Reese puts recent debates about the contemporary welfare backlash into historical perspective. She provides a closer look at these early antiwelfare campaigns, showing why they were more successful in some states than others and how opponents of welfare sometimes targeted Puerto Ricans and Chicanos as well as blacks for cutbacks. Her research reveals both the continuities and changes in American welfare opposition from the late 1940s to the present.
Reese brings new evidence to light that reveals how large farmers and racist politicians, concerned about the supply of cheap labor, appealed to white voters' racial resentments and stereotypes about unwed mothers, blacks, and immigrants in the 1950s. She then examines congressional failure to replace the current welfare system with a more popular alternative in the 1960s and 1970s, which paved the way for national assaults on welfare. Taking a fresh look at recent debates on welfare reform, she explores how and why politicians competing for the white vote and right-wing think tanks promoting business interests appeased the Christian right and manufactured consent for cutbacks through a powerful, racially coded discourse. Finally, through firsthand testimonies, Reese vividly portrays the tragic consequences of current welfare policies and calls for a bold new agenda for working families. ... Read more

Product Description

Not Working chronicles the devastating effects of the 1996 welfare reform legislation that ended welfare as we know it. For those who now receive public assistance, "work" means pleading with supervisors for full-time hours, juggling ever-changing work schedules, and shuffling between dead-end jobs that leave one physically and psychically exhausted.

Through vivid story-telling and pointed analysis, Not Working profiles the day-to-day struggles of Mexican immigrant women in the Los Angeles area, showing the increased vulnerability they face in the welfare office and labor market. The new "work first" policies now enacted impose time limits and mandate work requirements for those receiving public assistance, yet fail to offer real job training or needed childcare options, ultimately causing many families to fall deeper below the poverty line.

Not Working shows that the new "welfare-to-work" regime has produced tremendous instability and insecurity for these women and their children. Moreover, the authors argue that the new politics of welfare enable greater infringements of rights and liberty for many of America's most vulnerable and constitute a crucial component of the broader assault on American citizenship. In short, the new welfare is not working.

3-0 out of 5 stars Two left academics try to rebut underclass theory
Written by two left-wing academics, this book covers many subjects:left-wing theory about what creates poverty, the history and economic and demographic background of Long Beach, California, the 1996 welfare reforms as they were implemented in Los Angeles County and finally an ethnographic study of a number of Latina women on welfare in Long Beach, after the 1996 reforms passed. The authors are well-read in each of these fields, and they put a great deal of work into this book.

The purpose which unites the whole enterprise is political and ideological.Specifically, the two authors were very offended, in the 1990s, by the rise of underclass theory.Put forward by conservatives at first, such as Charles Murray, and then adopted in modified form by some liberals, such as William Julius Wilson, to become a concensus theory, underclass theory says that the hard core of the American poor remain poor because they behave differently than the rest of us.Their areas are more prone to criminal violence, their families are more unstable, their children are born out of wedlock far more frequently, they use drugs more, value education less and, in general, behave in the self-destuctive ways celebrated by rap music.Welfare makes poverty worse, this theory argues, because it encourages dependency rather than work. Thus, the 1996 reforms sought to get as many people as possible off of welfare and onto a job, as a way to start moving up the economic ladder.

Our authors vehemently disagree with every aspect of this theory. They believe strongly that poverty is due to injustices built into our economy. They believe that America is racist, sexist, anti-immigrant and so forth. They feel that America is so systematically unjust that paying welfare to the poor is simple justice.

To counter underclass theory, our authors did an ethnographic study of immigrant Latinas on welfare.Their purpose was to show that these womendo not fit the stereotype of the underlcass. These women, they show us, are hard-working, very supportive of their children, do not use drugs and so forth. They are poor, our authors argue, because America does not offer high-paying jobs to uneducated, Mexican immigrant women whose command of English is not good. What society should do, our authors argue, is to provide full support for these women and their children, while the women are sent to college and taught to be fluent in English. Our authors feel that, until these women can get high-paying professional jobs, it is just wrong to expect them to work.

In this view, of course, our authors are to the left of nearly everyone in American politics. Most of us accept that immigrants are poor when they come here, and that working hard for a few generations, so that their children or grandchildren, can prosoper, is not such a bad deal.It was after all, the same deal that most of our ancestors got.

Further, the book is not really talking about the underclass.Underlcass theorists are not talking about recent immigrants, by and large.Instead, they are primarily talking about Americans who have been caught in poverty for a number of generations. Thus, the ethnographic study in this book kind of misses the point; these are not the people that either Charles Murrary or William Julius Wilson were writing about. ... It's amazing to me the amount of criticism this book generates. I would like to say to anyone seeking answers in AA keep seeking and don't give up. There are many bitter souls who never obtain sobriety or are so adamant against spirituality that they would try to destroy anyone who is trying to better their life through a spiritual awakening and reliance on God. Do not listen to the scoffers. You will find your way to life and peace.

This book outlines the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and is nothing less than a philosophical tour de force of the AA way of life, how it works, and why it works. It is a wonderfully simple explanation of the alcoholic and the struggles he or she faces in this modern world. It is truly a gift. There are only a handful of books I have ever read that have changed me fundamentally to the core of my being and for the better, this is one of them.

There is a solution, there is a way out, best of wishes to all my fellow alcoholics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kids like it
This book may start out a bit simple, but I think as we work through it over the summer, it will be perfect. The kids like the colorful pages.

2-0 out of 5 stars not enough variety (P-K version)... ones for older kids are good though
My daughter (5 1/2) typically loves workbooks. But, this one (P-K edition) was too much of the same thing over and over. There is definitely not enough variety. The counting pages were not at all interesting or challenging for her.I have found other workbooks for this age group hold her attention without issue. This one does not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workbook!
This is a wonderful summer workbook to continue summer learning before my daughter starts kindergarten in the fall.

Sharing their own personal journeys toward renewal and the stories of other women who have tackled the diseases of sex addiction and co-sex addiction, Claudine Pletcher and Sally Bartolameolli, M.Ed., shed light on what you can do to heal the shame that binds you and offer practical advice on:

  • Honoring the Feminine Voice to learn to love and respect yourself
  • How to set boundaries, honor your intuition, and demand to be heard
  • How to create authentic relationships and sustain them for a lifetime
  • How to experience authentic intimacy and rewire tainted perceptions of sex and sexuality

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was extremely disappointed with this book and would not recommend it. It is poorly edited, has inconsistent verbage, and references a non exist support program. It appears the readers that found this book helpful were likely friends of the authors as they are from the same city. This is a painful enough topic to be personally acquainted with and following the advice in this poorly written book may make this difficult journey even harder to navigate should it be followed, in my opinion. I would recommend staying with the experts in this field and do highly recommend the Stefanie Carnes edited book "Mending A Shattered Heart".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Message of Hope for Those Still Suffering from Co-Sex Addiction
What an incredible book! It truly helps co-sex addicts see that they are not alone in dealing with this issue and that there is hope for recovery. These authors relate to their readers in a loving and non-shaming way while helping them to understand their disease and how it has contributed to the dysfunctional relationship with the addict.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
This book has changed my outlook on life.It helps anyone involved in an addictive relationship by helping them become empowered and authentic. It can help anyone understand what co-sex addiction is and how to live a healthy life. The main way it helps co-sex addicts is by tackling the core issue:shame.

Through all my years in recovery, I have read a lot of books and some were great, but none came close to "Relationships from Addiction to Authenticity."This book was the best written for anyone involved with a sex/love addict.A must have! ... Read more
