The war beetween Hittite and Egypt in this period had affected Cyprus as well. The architecture of the castle resembles the styles of those constructed by the Hittites in Anatolia. It is four sided and the entrance and the walls have been fortified with towers. Big ashlars have been used in its construction. It has a courtyard in the middle.

Extractions: On Friday, March 13, 1992, I moved to Wilmerding, Pennsylvania, just seventy-eight years and a day after the death of inventor George Westinghouse , founder of the Westinghouses Air Brake Company. Adjusting to the sounds of passing trains, the hum of the rails, and the toll of the bell from the Town Clock took me quite a while. The clock is part of the Castle, an affectionate name given the old executive headquarters of the Air Brake, known by my mother-in-law and other long time town folk simply as the G.O. Set to chime the correct number of times every hour on the hour, the Town Clock also strikes once every half hour. Midnight is no different from high noon to that persistent clock. You can well imagine my dislike for it during my first few weeks of adjustment to city living. Nonetheless, the first one in line to tour the Castle during Wilmerding Days, a time when everyone gets together to celebrate the town, was yours truly. Patterned after a castle in Scotland, it proved to be a magnificent piece of architecture. A rare treat indeed. Mr. Westinghouse, himself, was present in life size cardboard cutout form, standing there in his old office. Old Wilmerding. What an impressive sight she was from the window of his second floor semi-oval office. Everything was visible including trains, rails and the Air Brake manufacturing plant which once employed well over 6,000 people. I was overwhelmed.

No Swiss historic monument is better known throughout the world. It has become a symbol of our country, representative of its beauty, the harmony of its shape and the visibie strength and stability it exudes. Built on the water's edge, Chillon is unique with one side a fortress facing the ancient road to Italy, the other a princely residence facing the Lake of Geneva. The origins of the castle go back a long way in the past. The first written reference was made in 1160, although it is known that the rock on which the castle was built had been inhabited in antiquity. This is easily explained by its strategic position controlling the narrow passage between lake and mountains, on this major northsouth route. The former presence of a Roman outpost is very likely (roman coins and debris were found during excavation work on the Chillon rock, in 1896~. Even if we know nothing about the reputed existence of a castle in the early Middle Ages, the fact remains that the oldest constructions on the lower parts go back to the 11th century ... The occupation of Vaud by the Bernese, from 1536 to 1798, has left visible marks, mostly in decoration and maintenance. Since Vaud became independent in 1798, Chillon castle has belonged to the Canton. In the Romantic Era, 19th century, the castle of Chillon attained fame through many narratives told by writers and poets such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Shelley, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, and most of all Byron. Inspired by the story of Bonivard's imprisonment in the 1 6th century, the latter wrote the poem 'The Prisoner of Chillon" which is known throughout the world.
