4-0 out of 5 stars The Blizzard Disaster
This book is well written and entertaining. It's also improbable but that's all part of the story. Two modern teenagershave this device where they can touch a map or a photograph and they transport themselves to that locale in an instant. In this case they arive in western Minnesota on November, 11, 1940, one of the most severe blizzards in state history.

Their intention is to write a report for their school, and they believe they can have better information if they go directly to the spot rather than rely on book information.Their intentions work until they hear the cries of a lost little girl who is in danger of freezing to death. While it all works out in the end (these young adult books really have no other ending), the author writes in a way that makes the story fast paced and entertaining. This is a good short book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Blizzard Disaster
This book was exciting and nail biting. There was always some one in danger. The blizzard strikes unexpectedly with a schoolroom full of children, the walk home, getting lost in the storm, and then there was the time travelers and wondering if they would ever get home safely.I liked how Warren and Betsy were willing to help the lost girl even if it meant them being stuck in 1940 forever. The love between Janis and her horse, Patsy was great too.If she had not saved the horse she would have died for sure. You have to read this story to fill in the blanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Blizzard Disaster - Sci-Fi or Historical Fiction?
This book is science fiction, yet the time travelers from 1998 do not interact with the historical characters from 1940 Minnesota until the last two of the 15 chapter in the book.Nearly 3/4 of the text describes the Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940.How can the time travelers save 4-year-old Ellie without and make it back to their own homes? One of the family workhorses has gone blind.Father thinks the horse needs to be put down, but is this the best alternative for a horse that has lots of horse-sense?Overall, a great depiction of some of the stuggles encountered in one of the coldest natural disasters - a blizzard.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was great!
It had a lot of action in it and kept my attention.I liked how Pansy the horse led Janet home even though it was blind.I felt like I was actuallythere!Read this book...it is great!

3-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put the book down!

Product Description
Snow began falling over New York City on March 12, 1888. All around town, people struggled along slippery streets and sidewalks -- some seeking the warmth of their homes, some to get to work or to care for the less fortunate, and some to experience what they assumed would be the last little snowfall of one of the warmest winters on record. What no one realized was that in a very few hours, the wind and snow would bury the city in nearly 21 inches of snow and bring it to a ferocious standstill. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story! One of my favorite Jim Murphy books.
I read this book straight through because I wanted to know what would happen next to all of the people. To be more accurate, I wanted to know what had happened to them because, of course, these people were real, which to me made their stories even more exciting. Jim Murphy creates a very visual story of what happened during the storm. Why did one person decide to go to work, and another person did not? How did one person's kindness, common sense or heroism affect the survival of others? The story is so vivid, I can still remember the beginning when Jim Murphy recounts the unexpected summer-like weather Manhattanites were enjoying right before the blizzard.

Jim Murphy takes us for a ride that's as wild as the storm, up and down the east coast, telling tales of destruction and survival. I found myself cheering for those who survived, and wishing I could warn those who set out to try to make it home in a storm that was like no other. Jim Murphy sets the scene and writes about the blizzard's heroes and victims in such a compelling way that it is easy to imagine the dire circumstances, the fortitude exercised by those who overcame the storm, and their exhaustion, too. And he also explains how infrastructure and systems, such as the subway and weather reports, developed as a result of this blizzard. If you've ever been cold and wondered how much longer you would have to wait to be warm again, you'll appreciate the vivid telling of this story. It is one of my favorite Jim Murphy books!

4-0 out of 5 stars Blizzard of 2010 appropriate
My 11 year old read this as one of a collection of books for a school book club.Coincidentally she read it while we were home for 2 weeks during the 2010 east coast blizzard. She was scared!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I bought this book for my daughter but since I also enjoy reading about and studying weather I thought I would read through it. I found it very interesting from a waether and historical point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and informative book
I bought this book for my daughter and found it very enjoyable and interesting for myself.I enjoy reading about and studying meteorology especially when it comes to winter storms. The book even though it was written for 5th to 8 graders was a very good and informative read for adults also.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Blizzard of 1888 and the effects on the East Coast.
Another fine book for young readers by Jim Murphy.I was not aware of the history of the March, 1888 Blizzard on the East Coast and this very readable short book gave me the low down of the tragedy people had to endure when two storm systems met off the East Coast. The book focused the attention on New York, but other localities were also included.Several hundred people died as a result of this storm, so I was surprised when I read this book. The author modeled this book for young readers, but it can be of interest to the adult. In a short read, an adult can get a brief history of this terrible storm.
A good little read for those interested in tragedies. The authors writings are smooth, and the flow is good.It is an easy read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fascinating, Terrifying Phenomenon Known as Blizzards!
Growing up in small-town Wisconsin in the 1950s, I have vivid memories of December/January snow storms - heavy, heavy snowfalls mixed with high winds that howled like an animal and thudded against the walls of our house. leaving us - and the rest of the town - snowed in. Maybe none of those qualified as blizzards - did I mention the bone-chilling temps? - but they came close enough for most of us! Michael and Mary Woods detail the fascinating story of one of Mother Nature's most fascinating and deadly tools in this 2008 Lerner Publications release.

Part of Lerner's 'Disasters Up Close' series, BLIZZARDS details this worldwide weather phenomenon for readers 9-12. After discussing what blizzards are and how they're created, the Woods' discuss famous blizzards of the past, different 'Blizzard Zones' across the globe, how blizzards are measured, how people/cities/states/nationsrespond to blizzards and what lies in the future. The book includes many first-person reminiscences from blizzard survivors, some from as long ago as 1888! The book also includes appendices that include a Blizzard Timeline, glossary, further readings, etc. I'm 59 years old and I found out things about blizzards I never knew!

The book is illustrated with many b&w and color photographs, maps and diagrams that help emphasize how crippling a blizzard can be. (One color photograph of a frost-bitten hand may be upsetting to some).

Young weather buffs will find BLIZZARDS an extremely interesting, informative and very readable experience. Recommended. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY BORING!!!!!
I have given this book one star because I thought that this book was very boring and hard to understand. The book had a lot of hard vocabulary that i had to look up in the dictionary. The book mainly talked about what the blizzard did and how the blizzard effects a big part of Americas history.Even though the book was noring and hard to understand I did learn a lot of interesting things but I wouldn't recommend this book to kid's my age.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Tale
The blizzard of '88 was certainly a tragedy of epic proportions. Personal accounts of this rogue storm have survived to this date, passed down through the generations by families and friends, and now to us through this well written book. Individual accounts of the storm, acts of bravery, compassion, suffering, and despair, are woven throughout the book. These stories, accompanied by actual photographs taken during the storm, breath fresh life back into this event and make this book enjoyable and informative reading for the young and old alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Life in the Dust Bowl...For Younger Readers!
The 1930s Dust Bowl was probably the worst disaster to hit America. Poor farming techniques coupled with drought conditions created a situation where valuable farm land turned to dust and blew away in huge dust storms that blotted out the sun. The loss of farm land forced thousands of Great Plains residents to relocate in the hopes of finding a future. Richard Levey describes those trying times in DUST BOWL, a volume in Bearport Publishing's 'X-treme Disasters that Changed America' series.

Intended for readers 9-12, Levey's book relates how farmers unknowingly brought on the Dust Bowl disaster by failing to use good soil conservation practices. (Back then, who knew!?!) Lack of rain set the stage for the huge 'black blizzards' that paralyzed cities, killed livestock and animals and eventualy forced 'Okies' and others to go west. Eventually the federal government stepped in, the rains came and the crisis was over but, in the meantime, some very hard times were endured by thousands of Americans.

Lever's book, which tops out at 32 pages, is an excellent Dust Bowl primer. He shares experiences of people who survived the droughts/black blizzards. He also includes many b&w and color photographs, graphs and maps that help define where the Dust Bowl was and depict what Great Plains life was like in the 1930s. The pix of black blizzards are fascinating.

Young readers should be intrigued by DUST BOWL. It shows how different - and hard - life was like for Americans of the 1930s. Recommended.
