Excerpt: This article is part of the series:Politics and government ofBarbados The monarchy of Barbados is a constitutional system of government in which a hereditary monarch is the sovereign and head of state of Barbados, forming the core of the country's Westminster style parliamentary democracy. The terms Crown in Right of Barbados, Her Majesty in Right of Barbados, or The Queen in Right of Barbados may also be used to refer to the entire executive of the government of Barbados. Though the Barbadian Crown has its roots in the British Crown, it has evolved over the centuries to become a distinctly Barbadian institution, represented by unique symbols. The present monarch is Elizabeth II officially titled Queen of Barbados who has reigned since February 6, 1952. She, her consort, and other members of the Royal Family undertake various public and private functions across Barbados and on behalf of the country abroad. However, the Queen is the only member of the Royal Family with any constitutional role, holding ultimate executive authority, though her Royal Prerogative remains bound by laws enacted by her in parliament and by conventions and precedents, leaving the day-to-day exercise of executive power to her Cabinet. While several powers are the sov...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14472504 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Government of Barbados consists of: The Monarch, HRM Queen Elizabeth II and her representative the Governor-General, HE Clifford Husbands; The Prime Minister, The Hon. David Thompson, and his Cabinet; and a Legislature divided into two legislative chambers of Parliament (The Senate and the House of Assembly). In keeping with the evolution of the Westminster system of governance, Barbados has evolved into a Parliamentary democracy and Constitutional monarchy, meaning that all real power rests with the Parliament. All Barbadian law is rooted historically on English common law, and the Constitution of Barbados has legally evolved to become the highest law of the land. The government has been chosen by elections since 1961 elections, when Barbados achieved full self-governance. Before then, the government was a Crown colony consisting of either colonial administration solely (such as the Executive Council), or a mixture of colonial rule and a partially-elected assembly, such as the Legislative Council. Both the Barbados Labour Party and the Democratic Labour Party have formed the government in the elections since 1961. The Prime Minister and Cabinet is formed by the political party which gains a simple majority in the general elections held in Barbados. These elections constitutionally must be held no longer than every five years apart, however elections can be called whenever the Government so chooses to seek a new mandate or loses a vote of no confidence in Parliament. It is part of Barbados' political system and supported by the Public service. T...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3514 ... Read more

Excerpt: This article is part of the series:Politics and government ofSingapore Executive Judiciary Elections The Government of Singapore is defined by the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore to mean the Executive branch of government, which is made up of the President and the Cabinet of Singapore. Although the President acts in his personal discretion in the exercise of certain functions as a check on the Cabinet and Parliament of Singapore, his role is largely ceremonial. It is the Cabinet, composed of the Prime Minister and other Ministers appointed on his advice by the President, that generally directs and controls the Government. The Cabinet is formed by the political party that gains a simple majority in each general election. A statutory board is an autonomous agency of the Government that is established by an Act of Parliament and overseen by a government ministry. Unlike ministries and government departments that are subdivisions of ministries, statutory boards are not staffed by civil servants and have greater independence and flexibility in their operations. There are five Community Development Councils (CDCs) appointed by the board of management of the People's Association (PA) for districts in Singapore. Product Description
Chattel House Blues is an account of the struggles of Black Barbadians in the 20th century to secure a place within an island their labour had built as a monument to British colonialism. Having fought against the local oligarchy in the streets of Bridgetown in 1937, black workers and their middle class allies, finally secured universal adult suffrage in 1950 and finally independence in 1966 ending the Great House Rule that had begun three hundred years earlier.

But political democracy and national independence did not bring to the new majority community the full feeling of citizenship promised by the founders of the nation. Politically enfranchised but economically disenfranchised and culturally alienated the struggle was rekindled to confront the past and bring justice and equality to the new dispensation; a cultural movement that seeks to centre and promote the African sensibility of the majority community took root and found expression in discourses within the arts, academia, and grass-roots community organisations. ...
