    Extractions: I tried the NetMagazines " 5 magazines for $30 " deal last year, and it's for real. I did it for American Heritage, which costs $20 by itself. Books on Tape has over 120 (!) WWII history audio books. Chris Whitten, Webmaster Japanese occupation of Burma in had cut off the last land route by which the Allies could deliver aid to the Chinese Government of Chiang Kai-shek. The only supply route available was the costly and dangerous "Hump" route for transport planes over the Himalayas. In the spring of the Allies were finally able to attempt the reconquest of Burma. A force under General Stilwell fought down the Hukawang Valley and reached the vicinity north of Myitkyina, a key communications center and Japanese stronghold, in May . Meanwhile, the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), a reinforced U.S. Army regiment better known as "Merrill's Marauders," had circled and was attacking Myitkyina from the south. Japanese resistance and the onset of the monsoon season in June delayed completion of the operation until August. As another phase of the spring offensive, a British force (the so-called "Chindits") under Maj. Gen. Orde C. Wingate had made a successful airdrop near Kotha in March and proceeded to disrupt Japanese communications in central Burma. At the same time, farther to the south, a British Commonwealth force inflicted a considerable defeat on Japanese forces defending against a drive on Akyab, a port of the Bay of Bengal.

Once upon a time, Burma was one of the wealthiest countries in Southeast Asia, with abundant natural resources and a farming-based economy. Today, after 37 years of isolationist military rule, it is filled with people starving and living in miserable poverty. A land full of beauty and tragedy, Burma is located in Southeast Asia bordering Thailand, India, Laos, and China. It was a colony of Great Britain for over 200 years, but previous to the British conquest, it was not a unified nation with its current borders. Burma is comprised of eight primary ethnic groups: Karen, Shan, Kachin, Chin, Arakan, Mon, Karenni, and the Burmans, as well as minor groups such as the Ahka, Pulau, and Rohingya. Each province once had its own king, and the residents were deemed his property. Except for occasional border trade, there was very little contact made between the different kingdoms, and every ethnic group had its individual system of governance, beliefs, and culture. Similar to most colonial countries after the end of the 19th century, there were a series of revolts protesting British occupation. Thhese protests were led by a young student at Rangoon University, named Aung San. He believed that the British could be best defeated by toppling the government. He established ties with the Japanese military which was, at that time, sweeping through Asia. In 1941, San returned from Japanese military training and recruited 30 men to expell the British rulers. Known as the "Thirty Comrades," these men were instrumental in forcing the British to pull out of Burma. Four years later, however, Aung San became aware of Japan's imperialistic goals. Changing sides, San and his fellow revolutionaries joined the Allied forces, and the British re-entered Burma.

I’m sure that corrections will need to be made and I hope that readers will feel free to contribute to this page. I have had a long correspondence with a man in Rangoon, Burma. This page is based on that correspondence and the excellent book "Registration Plates of the World, Third Edition". The first thing to clear up is the proper name of the country. Myanmar is Burma in the Burmese language. Myanmar is to Burma what Deutschland is to Germany or Côte d’Ivoire is to Ivory Coast. In 1989 Burma changed its country name to Myanmar on its stamps and much was made of this fact but I’ve noticed that whenever my correspondents refer to their country it is always referred to as Burma. The history of license plates in Burma fall naturally into three periods. Nobody is sure when license plates began to be used in Burma but by the mid-1930’s they were in use. The first period is from around 1930 to 1953. During most of this period the British ruled Burma and plates were in western characters. This continued during the early years of independence. It was not until 1953 that plates in Burmese characters were required. The second period lasted until 1996. The third period began in 1996. A fourth period could be added. From 1941 to 1944 Burma was occupied by the Japanese. It is not known what types of plates were in use during this period. This period is outside the scope of this page. It is important to remember that in Burma there are two types of license plates, registration plates and general number plates. Registration plates are issued to a particular vehicle while general number plates are issued to firms representing vehicle manufacturers. They are used on vehicles until the vehicle is registered by its new owner. Supposedly this takes place within a month or so and the plate is returned to the firm for reuse on another vehicle. In many places this type of plate is called a temporary plate but its use is different in Burma.

SUGAWARA planning to move main force of 3rd Hikoshidan to Malaya as soon as possible, and there focus on air attack against Singapore area. Before war, had concluded that there were 48 British fighters and 12 bombers in Buram, plus 1 squadron of American air force group. Southern Army hq and 3rd Hikoshidan very converned about this enemy air power in Burma.
