Extractions: A fter careful re-reading and analysis of original Old Burmese and other primary sources, the author discovered that four out of the five events considered to be the most important in the history of early Burma, and believed to have been historically accurate, are actually late-nineteenth- and twentieth-century inventions of colonial historians caught in their own intellectual and political world. Only one of these is a genuine indigenous Burmese myth, but it too has been embellished by modern historians. The author discusses each of these five myths and concludes with an assessment of the current situation in Burma in the context of the new myths springing up today, thereby bringing the thirteenth century into the twentieth.

His outstanding library containing books, manuscripts , maps and photographs was acquired by the National Library of Australia in 1980, as part of its effort to develop major research collections on Asia . The Luce Collection contains important source material not only about Burma, but on neighbouring areas of Southeast Asia, India and China. Luce was born in the English cathedral town of Gloucester, the twelfth child of a clergyman whose family came from Jersey in the Channel Islands. From an early age, Gordon showed an intense interest in history, languages and literature. At six he was reading Homer in Greek. He also became a fine gymnast. There is a story that aged about nine, when told at dinner that children should be seen and not heard he performed a hand-stand on the arms of his chair in silent protest. At Cambridge he read Classics and English Literature. His wide circle of friends included Rupert Brooke, Aldous Huxley, Maynard Keynes, E.M. Forster, the China scholar Arthur Waley and other notable figures of the Bloomsbury set. Keynes financed the publication of a volume of Luce's poems with illustrations by the artist Duncan Grant.

This link was formed through the fight against colonialism and fascism, and strengthened through the national independence movement and the ongoing revolution against the military dictatorship. Students in Burma have always stood on the side of the people whenever a conflict between the oppressors and the oppressed has taken place. Burmese students and the student unions have always admired and honored this tradition. The students’ commitment to truth, the tenacity of their beliefs, and their sacrifices for those beliefs are known as ‘"student ethics" or "morals of fighting peacock." The fighting peacock is a symbol of student unions of Burma. During the Sixth Conference of the ABFSU in 1960, the five policies and three flags of the organization were adopted unanimously in order to work for a democratic educational system, safeguarding student rights, democracy, internal peace and national reconciliation. Rice cultivation, Pyu traditions and Theravada Buddhism formed the productive and cultural underpinnings for the ensuing Pagan, Taungoo, and Konbaung dynasties. The manacles of Western colonial imperialism did not directly threaten the Burmese Kingdom until 1824. It was then that the British declared war on the Kingdom, after skirmishing with Burmese soldiers in the British-dominated territory of Bangladesh. The first Anglo-Burmese war lasted until 1826, and resulted in the Burmese surrender of the Arakan and Tenasserim areas, as well as the imposition of a 1 million Pounds Sterling war debt payable to the British Crown. Tensions remained high, and in 1852, stemming from an argument between British merchants and Rangoon customs authorities, the Second Anglo-Burmese war erupted. The war resulted in the British seizure of Rangoon, Martaban, Bassein, Pegu, and Prome. Finally, on December 20, 1852, British Authorities declared that all of Lower Burma would thus become part of British India. U C olonial enterprise flourished, and Burma's export economy was soon supplying the Empire Where the Sun Never Sets with teak, tin, and petroleum. By 1920, annual rice exports reached 3.6 million tons, and in the subsequent decade, when War in the Pacific erupted, the Japanese military took strategic interest in Burma, as they saw the country as an integral component in their Greater East Co-Prosperity Plan. Furthermore, with the World War already raging in Europe, certain colonial rears became particularly vulnerable. Several political factions within Burma had already formed the Freedom Bloc, with the intention of supporting British war efforts on the condition that Burma be granted independence after the war. However, the British responded by arresting a number of Burmese nationalists.

The Nats The art of Burma does not seem to have attracted the attention of Western scholars quite as much as for that of other important countries in South-east Asia. Except for the Pagan period (AD 1044-1287), therefore, the detailed history of Burmese art has still to be written. It is hard to account for this curious gap in the literature of Southeast Asian art history. One of the obstacles which up to now has prevented it from being filled may be the difficulty to combine the styles of several ethnic groups, such as the Shans, who have a strongly developed style of their own, into a connect narrative. As its name suggest, the Union of Burma comprises a number of constituent units; these have their own culture and traditions, which, as well as being unevenly developed, have both also influenced and been influenced by the main stream of Burmese art history. Burmese Buddha Images There are only three principal iconic position in which The Buddha appears in Burmese Art. The first is in the "earth-touching" attitude. The Buddha sits cross-legged, his body upright, his left hand is laid palm up in his lap, his right hand stretched forward over his right knee so that the tips of the fingers touch the ground. This refers to the moment of the Buddha enlightenment, when he called the earth itself to witness that he was entitled, by the virtue he had accumulated over the ages, to the supreme insight. The second shows the Buddha standing with his right hand raised in the gesture of protection, his left held down, palm out, giving blessing. The third principal icon of the Buddha represents him lying on his right side, his cheek resting on his right hand, in the act of dying into Nirvana.
