    Extractions: The breeding season is the most stressful period for resident birds with courting, nest-building, parenting of eggs and nestling all placing a heavy demand on time and energy. Eggs are particularly vulnerable to predators and the vagaries of the weather. Nests therefore have to provide an insulated environment whilst remaining as inconspicuous as possible. Nests in the Park tend to be either well-concealed or inaccessible. For example, the Olive-backed Sunbird decorates the exterior of its nest with a variety of items to disguise its presence. Nests vary in shapes and sizes; Kingfishers, bee-eaters and woodpeckers use natural cavities in trees or excavate burrows to lay their eggs in. Bulbuls, flycatchers build cup-shaped nests which are often felted with moss and lichen. Prinias and munias construct small balls of dried grass with lateral openings, usually in tall grasses. Tailorbirds stitch large green leaves into tubes in which their tiny cup- shaped nests are placed.

The Islands support over 80% of the world population of Black-browed Albatross. They remain the most important global site for the Rockhopper Penguin and hold the bulk of the world population of landbird species such as the Ruddy-headed Goose and Black-throated Finch. The rare Striated Caracara (right) is considered to be near-threatened globally with only a small population with a restricted range. Its behaviour is very unusual for a bird of prey and it is a candidate for protected status in forthcoming conservation legislation. Nests almost exclusively in evergreen trees. Bald Eagle - One of the few birds of prey to nest on Great Slave Lake. Builds large stick nests lined with moss, in trees or on cliffs. Occasionally nests on the ground. Greater and Lesser Scaup - Most abundant breeding ducks on Great Slave Lake, often found nesting with gulls and terns. The two species look similar, but Greater Scaup are larger. A male and female Lesser Scaup are pictured. Spotted Sandpiper - Common. Named for its characteristic spotted white breast. While on the ground, bobs tail constantly. Rapid, shallow wing beat is also characteristic. Savannah Sparrow - Common. Streaked breast, yellow above eye, and pink legs are characteristic. Nests on the ground in grass, usually near a shrub or small tree. Parasitic Jaeger - Solitary nester, rare on Great Slave Lake, which is the southern limit of its breeding range. Feigns injury to distract predators from nest.

    Extractions: The species that make up the breeding avifauna of the St. Lawrence can be divided into different groups based on their morphology and specific ecological requirements. These groups vary according to their number of species as well as their relative abundance along the entire St. Lawrence, according to the availability and quality of ecosystems along the river. Although passerines dominate the breeding avifauna of all the natural provinces, their number decreases by 50% from the estuary to the Gulf, explaining in large part the significant decrease in species richness observed in this part of the St. Lawrence. Raptors, though less numerous, also contribute to this phenomenon; shorebirds, waterfowl and colonial waterbirds do not. In the last group, an increase in the number of breeding species from the estuary to the Gulf is observed, particularly in the Magdalen Islands.

One recent morning I discovered the greater good the patch serves. A robin plucked some dead grass from it, then flew off with a bundle. I ain't Mr. Natural, but even I got the message: The little guy was building a nest proof positive of bird breeding behavior. Bill Busby, an associate scientist at the University of Kansas Biological Survey, knows all the signs and subtleties of such behavior. He's one of two editors, along with John Zimmerman, of the newly published Kansas Breeding Bird Atlas. The atlas tells birdwatchers where to find the 203 species of birds that breed and nest in the state. Birdwatchers actually helped make this book. All over the state they scoured blocks of land 3 miles square, looking for signs of breeding behavior singing, fancy flying, play-acting of various kinds.

Large breeding stags which are used as grandparent stock to influence the genetic pool have the greatest potential for leg disorder. There are very extreme types with a high pre-disposition to lameness. Very few breeding stags are taken to excessively heavy weights but those we saw had unnatural gaits and some had difficulty in walking. 85. Breeding policies adopted across the world make it inevitable that a small number of grandparent stags will be reared to extreme weights and size. These birds should not be allowed to suffer. We know of evidence that the older, heavy breeding stags may be affected by severe degenerative joint disease and experience pain during movement as a result. Further research is required to establish whether or not these lesions occur in younger breeding stock, particularly males; and to determine the potential for suffering and whether or not the lesions are related to excessive weight or abnormal conformation. In the meantime, management practices must seek to minimise the occurrence of leg pain in heavy stags by careful selection, vigorous culling and reduction of the energy intake levels. Culling should occur immediately a problem is manifest and breeding companies must not continue to collect semen once a stag shows signs of suffering. 86. We believe that some grandparent stags have been taken beyond the limit of acceptability and that it would not be appropriate to continue to select for increased weight without first improving leg strength.
