WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS include several important eighteenth and nineteenth century examples: a fine one-key flute by Friedrich Gabriel August Kirst of Potsdam (c. 1790), flute maker to Frederick the Great of Prussia; and the earliest dated American metal Boehm-system flute by Alfred Badger of New York (1866), on loan from the Hancock Museum of the University of Southern California. Others include a beautifully constructed oboe by Rudolf Gehrs of Berlin (c. 1850); a 6-key bassoon of the Jeantet school, Lyon (c. 1825); a unique proto-type saxello by the H.N. White Co., Cincinnati (c. 1925); and a fine Conn-O-Sax by the Conn Co., Elkhart (1929).

The French Horn is among the most difficult of instruments to master, but it possesses a brilliant, almost rugged voice which adds a wealth of color to the orchestra. The player can alter the sound and pitch by placing his hand in the bell or mouth of the instrument, or by using a mute. The Trombone This is the only instrument which employs a sliding tubing for change of pitch. (Silly people used to believe the player swallowed the instrument!) Like singers, there are alto, tenor and bass trombones, each with its own distinctive tone quality. As a solo instrument, a trombone can sound brassy or soft and romantic or even very solemn. return to top of page The Trumpet The brilliant voice of the trumpet has been heard over the centuries sounding alarms, calls to battle and adding to the excitement of parades. Its sweet, singing voice also sounds taps over military graves. Like the French Horn, the trumpet sound comes from blowing through complicated tubing, but it can play an octave higher than the Horn. There are many different kinds of trumpets with higher and lower voices, and these increase the versatility of the instrument even further.

Extractions: Embargoed until June 17, 1997 Most brass players believe that the playing qualities of their instruments are affected by the method of construction and the materials used. Composition, thickness, and hardness of the metals used are all cited as important. Phrases such as ``hand-hammered bell'' are often found in advertising literature. This paper will give an overview of the tools, techniques, and materials used by brass-instrument makers today and in centuries gone by. Traditional techniques are still used along with the latest metalworking methods, so that a present-day instrument may contain some parts produced by computer-controlled machine tools and others made using processes familiar to sixteenth-century artisans. Is there any objective evidence that the sound of a brass instrument is affected by the material from which it is made? Indeed there is. An experiment was performed using a French horn with a removable bell flare. One microphone was mounted inside the mouthpiece cup and another on the axis of the bell about one and one half bell diameters away from the bell rim. A meter connected to the mouthpiece signal allowed the player to monitor her playing level and repeatably produce the same level inside the horn with different bell flares attached to the instrument.

Extractions: Many people are confused about the differences between the mellophone, mellophonium, alto horn, and french horn. Many people also just plain don't know (or care!) what they are. While in some cases there are no definitive answers, below are definitions and pictures of each as best as I can tell based on years of research. In addition, I have pictures of numerous other ODD horns, most pitched in Eb or F. I guess I have a bias toward these instruments, since I play tenor horn in the Cincinnati Brass Band and play the Horn in a brass quintet,community band, and anyplace where they will pay me!! I currently own a Conn 8d, Besson Soverign Tenor Horn, 1926 Conn Mellophone, 1960's Conn (Kenton inspired) Mellophonium, Frumpet (Gross!), Bach Mellophone, and a Couesnon Eb Alto Flugel. (My wife, by the way, is thrilled about this!!!) Extractions: Brass instruments get their name because they are made of metal (although not necessarily brass). Today brass instruments have a separate part called the mouthpiece, which fits into the leadpipe, or small end, of the tubing. The player blows air through the mouthpiece, buzzing his or her lips against it. As with all instruments, the faster the vibration, the higher the pitch, and the shorter the tubing the higher the pitch. While modern woodwind instruments have many keys, modern brass instruments have three or four valves (if any) to help create different pitches. Pushing down a valve alters the pitch by accessing more tubing. Players must also change the speed of the air and the muscle tension in their lips while buzzing them to change pitches. As brass instruments became longer and more complicated, it was not practical to leave them stretched out straight, so makers began to coil them for ease in playing and carrying. When valves were invented, in the early 1800s, this allowed trumpets, French horns, and tubas to produce every note in the chromatic scale, putting them on a more equal footing with strings and woodwind instruments in orchestral playing.
