Extractions: Crops of the Andes Traditional drylands cultures in the Andes are a repository of knowledge derived from centuries of responding to elevational and climatic variations. Cultivation of potatoes , one of the world's five main food crops and of which there are over 240 different varieties (220 in Bolivia alone), in the semi-arid Bolivian altiplano is based on traditional methods. Indians are kneeling, digging with their hands, extracting potatoes from the soil. Women carry the potatoes away in baskets or in their strong, wide skirts. In the all too brief ten days that I had there, I spent several days tumbling in train carriages, becoming acquainted with livestock in buses, and riding boats and planes in various stages of disrepair. Meanwhile, your backpack, strapped to the roofrack, is accumulating a healthy patina of dirt and grime. The journey is made none the more pleasant by the fact that buses do not have bathrooms, even for twelve-to-eighteen hour cross country journeys. The driver will stop at some roadside facility when he needs to go, but otherwise, you just have to fluid-restrict yourself and hope for the best. As for safety, suffice it to say that there is a special "patron saint" for minibuses. Go to Copacabana, a sunny town on the shore of Lake Titicaca, on a weekend and you will see entire fleets of minibuses in front of the church, decorated with garlands. The statue of the Virgin in the cathedral at Copacabana has somehow acquired a reputation for miraculous powers pertaining to public transportation. After the blessing, the buses wear a banner informing the discerning traveler of their special status. Not a bad way to spend my summer vacation.

Extractions: The Altiplano The highlands or Altiplano (literally high plains), despite of its name is not all flat, it is actually made up of valleys, rivers beds, lakes and plains separated relatively small mountain ranges. The altitude of the flat lands starts at 3600 m / 11808 ft and gets up to 4800 m / 15744 ft, and house the cities of La Paz, Oruro, and Potosi; and the inland basin of Titicaca. The plateau is 800 km / 496 mi long and 160 km / 99 mi wide. The mid-height Valleys lie east and southeast of the Altiplano. Valleys and hills make up this fertile area in which the climate is Mediterranean-like. They house the colonial cities of Cochabamba, Sucre, and Tarija. One of the most spectacular and unforgettable areas of the Altiplano is the colorful, spectrum-like desert located in the south: the Bolivian Atacama desert. All contained within this desert, you will see awesome Salt Flats, geysers, volcanoes, glaciers, rock and lava canyons, colorful lakes and rivers, and vast, spacious areas which will transport you to a surrealistic world.

The Andes are located in South America, near the Pacific Coast, and form a North to South line along the subcontinent; from Venezuela to the Fire land (Tierra del Fuego) in Argentina. South of the Ecuador, the range widens more than 200 km / 124 mi extending out from the beaches of the Pacific to the flat lands of the Amazon jungle. In this widened section, the mountains become higher and steeper. There are about 600 mountains reaching over 6000 m /19680 ft and thousands of others reaching over 5000 m /16400 ft, some of them still unclimbed. The Andean mountain range, splits in two major branches in Peruvian territory (north of Titicaca Lake): the Western Volcanic Range, and the Eastern Mountain Range. Farther south at the border between Chile and Argentina, both branches joins again.
